Smurf (BELGIUM)
He's happy. He's blue. He stands three apples high. He's a Smurf, of course. He was first called schtroumpf. (That's whatchamacallit in Belgian.) The Smurfs were first made by a Belgian artist named Peyo. He drew his blue whatchamacallit friends in comic books for Belgian kids. Now the Smurfs, with their mushroom homes and "smurfy" stories, are all over the world.

Doraemon (JAPAN)
There's a crazy blue cat loose in Japan! This cat, named Doraemon, has a big grin, and a pocket full of tricks and toys. He comes from the make-believe future to lead his human pal, Nobita, into adventures and out of trouble. Doraemon started in Japanese cartoon strips. Now he's a big tv cartoon star.

The Mouse And The Elephant (WEST GERMANY)
And now...the star of a special tv show from West Germany...it's the Mouse! The Mouse and his buddy the Blue Elephant travel everywhere, looking for fun. No problem is too sticky or tricky for the Mouse. You can always count on him to be ready with a wink and a silly idea.

Monica (BRAZIL)
This 8-year-old girl is the little leader of her gang. She's bursting with super power, which she uses to help get her friends out of trouble. Monica stars in more cartoons in Brazil than anyone else her size.

Beau Beaver (CANADA)
It's Beau Beaver! He's full of facts and fun from the big woods up in Canada. Those woods are full of real beavers. In fact, the beaver is so well-known and well-loved by Canadians, its picture is on their nickel. Beau is a cartoon cousin of the real beaver. He comes to life on the Sesame Street show that children see in Canada.

Professor Balthazar (YUGOSLAVIA)
Everyone loves Balthazar! In each of his tv cartoons, he's the one who tackles problems and solves them. All of his cartoon friends love and need him - boys and girls, men and women, animals, plants, even creatures from outer space. All of his real-life friends and fans love him, too.

Mole (CZECHOSLOVAKIA)
This little hero is the Mole. He's from Czechoslovakia. Do you wonder why he is called a hero? He saved a garden from becoming a road! He rescued an egg from a cake factory! He cleaned up an old carpet that was left in the garbage...and ended up on a flying carpet ride! He's a brave fellow who finds himself in the middle of big adventures.

Dot (AUSTRALIA)
Saved by a kangaroo! That's Dot. She was lost in the wild countryside until her kangaroo friend found her. Now they're searching Kangaroo Valley for Joey, the kangaroo's lost baby. On their way, they meet a rabbit called Funny-Burniny. Lots of kids follow Dot and her animal friends through Australia on super adventures.

Cheburashka (SOVIET UNION)
Cheburashka lived in a special forest until he wandered off to a very big store in town. Cheburashka made a bed in a phone booth. and that spot became his home. It's small, but at least he can make lots of phone calls. Cheburashka really started out as a stuffed animal that belonged to a Russian boy. That boy grew up and created the cartoon. Now children all over the Soviet Union share the adventures of this cuddly character.
