THE SONG OF RETURN (From the Book of Morality)
I. The First Step 1. I walked again into the garden at dawn. 2. The air was quiet, yet it carried memory. 3. The path we once shared still lay before me. 4. The grass had grown over parts of it, yet it was not lost. 5. My heart said, “If distance was chosen, return must also be chosen.” 6. So I spoke the first word, though my voice trembled.
II. The Answer 7. My beloved heard me and turned. 8. For a moment we stood as strangers in a familiar place. 9. I said, “The garden has felt empty without your laughter.” 10. My beloved replied, “And the days have been long without your kindness.” 11. Our words were small, yet they broke the silence. 12. And the silence, once broken, began to loosen its hold.
III. The Softening 13. My beloved said, “I hardened my heart to guard myself.” 14. And I answered, “I hardened mine because I feared to bend.” 15. We looked upon one another and saw the truth we had hidden. 16. For pride grows strong in shadow but weak in light. 17. Mother Nature passed among the leaves and smiled gently. 18. For soil that softens can still bear life.
IV. The Choosing Again 19. I reached out my hand, though I feared it might be refused. 20. My beloved took it. 21. The warmth that once flowed between us returned slowly, like water finding its course again. 22. I said, “Let us not pretend the storm did not pass.” 23. My beloved answered, “But let us not remain beneath its shadow.” 24. And we remembered the promise spoken long before: 25. To choose one another again when the morning returns.
V. The Watching Sky 26. Father Time marked the moment and kept it carefully. 27. For he knows that reconciliation is rarer than conflict. 28. Mother Nature blessed the garden with quiet rain. 29. The leaves shone as if newly washed. 30. The Great Current moved freely once more between us.
VI. The Renewed Path 31. We walked again along the old path. 32. It was not the same as before. 33. Yet it was stronger. 34. For what is broken and mended learns humility. 35. My beloved said, “Love is not the absence of distance.” 36. I replied, “It is the courage to return.”
VII. The Evening Peace 37. The day moved gently toward evening. 38. The wind rested among the branches. 39. I looked upon my beloved and said, 40. “Let us guard this garden with patience.” 41. My beloved answered, 42. “And let us remember how easily silence can grow.” 43. The stars appeared quietly above us. 44. Father Time measured the hour. 45. Mother Nature watched over the living earth. 46. And the Great Current flowed through the night in peace. 47. Thus the path of return was opened.
