Smurfen for the Commodore 64
Smurfen, a 1985 homebrew title for the Commodore 64 by C.A.W. Brand and M. Brand, is an unofficial adaptation of the ColecoVision classic Smurf: Rescue in Gargamel's Castle. In this simple platformer, you guide a Smurf through a series of obstacles to save Smurfette, much like its inspiration. The gameplay is basic - jump over hazards and navigate the terrain - just watch out for those pesky fences.
What sets Smurfen apart is its soundtrack: a SID chip rendition of Michael Jackson's Billie Jean. This unexpected choice is an amazing highlight, showcasing the C64’s iconic sound capabilities, though it feels quite out of place in a Smurf-themed game. The graphics are decent for the era but don’t outshine the ColecoVision original. Overall, Smurfen is a quirky curiosity - more memorable for its music than its gameplay. Worth a try for fans of great SID tunes and Smurf game enthusiasts.
