My adaptation of "Clumsy Not Clumsy" from the 2021 animated series, as written in the style of a 1980s cartoon show episode.
-----
Chapter 1

It was a quiet night in the Smurf Village as most of the Smurfs were gathered at Tapper's Tavern for some brief recreation and relaxation before going to bed. Tapper was serving the drinks while the other Smurfs were busy talking with each other or playing various games.
Empath was with Clumsy and Duncan McSmurf as they were sitting at the counter, enjoying drinks and conversation with each other. "Well, laddie, I sure like the mishaps that our young friend smurfs us into that smurfs us into trouble that we somehow manage to smurf ourselves out of, Empath," Duncan said.
"But I don't intend to smurf those things on purpose, Duncan," Clumsy said. "It's just the nature of what I am."
"This smurf wasn't judging you, Clumsy," Empath said. "This smurf knows you have a good heart and that you always intend to do the right thing, even if you don't always know what the right thing to do is."
"The laddie was the first to discover the region called Pussywillow Hollow, and there was where we met the Pussywillow Pixies and the Wartmongers," Duncan said.
"Yeah, and that was where I met my friend Pansy," Clumsy said. "I still think of her every chance I smurf."
"It's too bad that you and Pansy both live in different worlds where one cannot live inside the other's world for too long, Clumsy," Empath said. "This smurf would sense that the two of you would have had something more going on between you two."
"Well, I did smurf Hefty's place in the mud-wrestling ring when me, Hefty, and Papa Smurf were smurfing on a way out," Clumsy said.
"And what a brave thing you did there, Clumsy," Duncan said. "In the condition Hefty was in, he wouldn't have lasted long against that Wartmonger."
"But there was one time that I was no longer Clumsy, and it was because of a magical amulet that Gargamel had let me smurf, which I didn't know smurfed him straight to our village," Clumsy said.
"Michty me, laddie, that's one story I was hoping you wouldn't smurf up in this conversation," Duncan said.
Empath rubbed his chin in thought. "That's one story that this smurf hasn't heard from you, Clumsy. This smurf would be interested in hearing all about that little misadventure."
"I just want to let you know, some of the things in my story came from Narrator, but anyway, here's what happened about a few years before you smurfed home for good, Empath," Clumsy said.

And as Clumsy began his story, Empath saw in his friend's mind the events that took place. To begin with, Clumsy was with Hefty and Smurfette collecting smurfberries out in the forest. The three of them seemed to have a good time together, with hardly a mishap from Clumsy as they were minding their own business. They were walking back to the Smurf Village humming the Smurf song when they came across a bunny who looked at them. "Gosh, hello there, Mr. Bunny Rabbit," Clumsy said, sounding happy.
"Oh, he looks so cute, I just wish we could smurf him home to our village," Smurfette said.
"I would like that too, but our village is already full of our fellow Smurfs," Hefty said. "Maybe someday we might smurf a pet of our very own to smurf care of."
"But why can't we smurf this bunny home with us right now?" Clumsy asked.
"He's probably got a home to smurf to in this forest, Clumsy," Hefty answered. "Would you like to be smurfed from your own home and smurf off with somebody you don't know?"
"Uh...well, now that you've smurfed it that way...," Clumsy started to say.
"Hefty is right, Clumsy," Smurfette said. "We'll leave this bunny alone and smurf home to our village right away."
"Well, see you later, Mister...," Clumsy began to say.
Then suddenly the three of them saw the bunny being snatched up by a giant being. They looked and saw who that giant being was. It was Gargamel, who was with his cat Azrael looking for woodland creatures to capture.
"Ah, this would serve me nicely as part of our dinner tonight, Azrael," Gargamel said, pleased as he put the bunny into his sack. "Of course, what would taste a whole lot better would be one single Smurf. Just imagine all the delicacies we can make out of those little blue buggers once we capture them all. But we do have to save some of them in order to complete the Philosopher's Stone, and then we can have all the riches in the world when we can turn things into gold." He laughed an evil laugh afterward.
"It's a good thing Gargamel has his back smurfed on us," Hefty said in a whisper. "It's time that we smurfed our way quietly to the village before he knows that we're here besides him and his cat."
The three Smurfs did their best to sneak quietly away from Gargamel. However, Clumsy ended up tripping over his own feet, crying out, "Oops!"
Gargamel's attention was diverted. "Azrael, did you hear that? We have company among us."
Azrael sniffed the air and sensed that he smelled Smurfs. He started to race off toward the direction of that smell. Gargamel then turned and saw that there were three Smurfs standing right behind him.
"SMURFS!" Gargamel cried out. "Azrael, get them!"
"Quick, let's run for it!" Hefty cried out.
The three Smurfs ran as fast as they could to avoid being caught by Azrael. Hefty and Clumsy both leaped over a rock that was in their way of escape, but as Clumsy leaped over, he caused a stick to rise up from the ground and smack Smurfette in the face, causing her to fall down to the ground and land where Azrael and Gargamel found her.
The evil wizard picked her up and examined her. "Well, well, well, if it isn't my traitorous little daughter," he said maliciously. "I'm sure there will be a special place for you when I bring you home to me. Maybe I can return you back to the way you were before Papa Smurf used his magic on you to make you a real Smurf. Or maybe I will find some other use for you."
"I'll never smurf back to the way you made me, Gargamel," Smurfette said defiantly.
"We'll see if your will is strong enough to resist mine, my dear," Gargamel said.
Hefty and Clumsy both looked over the rock to see that Gargamel was busy talking with Smurfette. "Well, no thanks to you, Clumsy, Smurfette is now in Gargamel's hands," Hefty said. "Stand back and let me smurf with him."
Taking the long stick he found on the ground in his hands, Hefty raced straight toward Gargamel and launched a pole-vault attack that struck Gargamel right in the stomach. The evil wizard felt his gut caving in as he let go of Smurfette and Hefty caught her and then grabbed a vine from a nearby tree to swing back to the rock where Clumsy was waiting.
"Oh, Hefty, you're my hero!" Smurfette exclaimed as she kissed Hefty on the cheek.
"Uh, guys, we're not out of danger yet," Clumsy said, pointing at Azrael now coming straight towards them.
"Good idea, Clumsy," Hefty said. "Let's smurf for it. And Clumsy, try to smurf out of our way for once."
The three Smurfs headed straight for a hollowed log, with Hefty and Smurfette in the lead and Clumsy following behind as he was tripping over his own feet. The three ran through the hollowed log while Azrael ran on top of it, catching up to the three as soon as they exited it. They were now running across some branches when Hefty and Smurfette came to the end of one branch and saw the river down below. Clumsy, meanwhile, was running as fast as he could, but ended up starting to roll around on top of the branches, with no control over where he was going.
Hefty looked behind him at Clumsy approaching with his rolling, and then looked ahead and saw a log floating down the river. "Quick, Smurfette, let's smurf for it!" he said as he and Smurfette leaped down and landed safely on the log.
Clumsy continued to roll until he was rolling right off the end of the branch. He found himself falling for a bit until it was stopped. He saw that Azrael had caught him by the seat of his pants with a paw.
"Oh, please be careful," Clumsy begged. "These are new trousers I am wearing."
Azrael flipped Clumsy high into the air, with Clumsy yelling in fear, and he would have landed right into the cat's mouth, but another hand had caught him before that happened. It was Gargamel.
"No, no, no, my stupid cat, this Smurf is mine," Gargamel scolded. "And with his help, this little Smurf will help bring us right into his own village, where we will capture the lot of them."
The evil wizard laughed as Clumsy gulped.
"CLUMSY!" Hefty and Smurfette yelled together as they watched Gargamel capture their friend.
"We have to smurf back and save him, Hefty," Smurfette said.
"No smurfing way, Smurfette," Hefty said. "We have to smurf back to the village and warn the others."
"I thought you were braver than that, Hefty," Smurfette said.
"I may be brave, but I'm not stupid," Hefty said. "We'll come back for him when we get other Smurfs in the village to help us."

Chapter 2

"That's real sad that Hefty left you alone with Gargamel when he could have saved you from him by himself, Clumsy," Empath said as he heard that part of the story.
"Aye, that Hefty certainly didn't have the spirit of the Smurfsman in him that day," Duncan said.
"Well, Hefty did smurf back to the village with Smurfette to get help, and for that I was grateful," Clumsy said. "But then I proved that I didn't need him to save me from Gargamel after all."
"And it was all because of that cheap amulet that the evil wizard let you smurf, that smurfed him all the way to our village, which no human would be able to find without a Smurf's help," Duncan said.
"I didn't know that the amulet was a tracking device for Gargamel to use, Duncan, honestly," Clumsy said defensively.
"This smurf believes you had honest intentions with that amulet, Clumsy," Empath said. "Right now, though, this smurf would be interested in knowing how you got your hands on that amulet."
"Well, it was when Gargamel was busy smurfing his usual song of what he was going to smurf with us, Empath," Clumsy said, as he continued the story.

Then Empath saw that Clumsy was in a small cage in Gargamel's castle while the evil wizard was busy dancing around with his cat and singing:

Oh, I'll fry a few and pickle a few and serve a few real cold,
Then I'll toast a few and roast a few and use the rest for gold.

"Some hunter you are, Gargamel," Clumsy scoffed. "You wouldn't have smurfed me if it weren't for my own two feet."
"It doesn't matter how I caught you, my little Smurf," Gargamel said, turning his attention on Clumsy. "The only thing that matters is that I did, and soon I will catch your 99 little friends and your Papa Smurf as well."
"Papa Smurf will find a way to smurf me out of this, Gargamel, just you wait!" Clumsy said.
"Yes, I'm sure that he will try," Gargamel said. "But for now, you're my captive to do with as I please. The problem is, how am I going to use you to capture all your fellow Smurfs?"
The evil wizard lifted up and carried Clumsy's cage until he plopped it down on top of a table, where he and Clumsy saw a golden amulet with a jewel embedded in it rolling around on the table. Gargamel picked it up and looked at it. And then he had an idea.
"Oh, my little Clumsy Smurf, how would you like to be forever rid of your two left feet?" Gargamel said, trying to sound nice. "Well, here is a little amulet that will let you do that." He showed Clumsy the amulet the question. "Why, just by wearing this, it will make you the opposite of what you actually are. You will no longer be a Clumsy Smurf."
"What I actually am?" Clumsy said. "Phooey...you must smurf me as being a fool to believe that!"
"So you need convincing, eh?" Gargamel said. "Well, let me show you its true power!" He took the bunny from another cage and held it by its ears. "You see, nice bunny..." He then placed the amulet on top of the bunny's head, and suddenly it turned mean and ferocious. "MEAN BUNNY!"
Clumsy looked at the bunny in fear as it continued to try using its paws to scratch the evil wizard as he tried several times to remove the amulet from the bunny's head until at last he succeeded, causing the bunny to instantly become peaceful again.
"You see, with this amulet, you will be graceful, light on your feet...why, you could be the hero that saves your little Smurfs," Gargamel said, showing Clumsy the amulet up close.
Clumsy stared at the amulet and imagined himself as the hero, being the one who would rescue Smurfette from Gargamel. "Gosh, I would be Graceful forever," Clumsy said, smitten with the idea while reaching for the amulet.
"Not so fast, my little Smurf," Gargamel said, pulling the amulet away before Clumsy touched it. "I'm not going to give away this little something for nothing, you know. I will make you a deal...I will let you have this little amulet, if you will tell me how to get to the Smurf Village."
"Me, smurf you the way to the Smurf Village?" Clumsy said. "I may be dumb, but I'm not that stupid to fall for that!"
"So your loyalty to your fellow Smurfs matters more than having this little trinket?" Gargamel said. "Why, I'm very disappointed in you. I thought you would want to be something better than what you actually are. Oh, well, I guess if you don't want it, then I'm going to keep it for myself." He then took Clumsy's cage and placed it on the floor. "You had your chance, and now it's gone forever."
Gargamel took the amulet and made it look like he was placing it in the pocket of his robe. But as he did, both the amulet and a key both dropped out in front of Clumsy. The little Smurf looked at both items and decided on what to do.
Gargamel turned toward the mirror in his laboratory and examined a spot of food on his upper tooth when he heard the door of Clumsy's cage open. He smiled but didn't look back, knowing what the little Smurf did.
Clumsy pinned the amulet to the side of his hat and tried to quietly sneak away from Gargamel when his back was turned. But then Azrael spotted him, and Clumsy made a run for it, slipping through a crack at the bottom of the door. Azrael reached the door only for a pot to drop on top of him.
Gargamel laughed at his cat's mishap. "I know that he escaped, but that was part of my plan, you numbskull," he said. "That amulet is also a tracking device, and with this crystal ball, I can find his village by following wherever he goes." He showed Azrael a small crystal ball he was carrying. "Come on, Azrael, let's follow that Smurf straight to his village."
Azrael mewed a response of reluctance as he followed his master into the forest.

Back in the village, Hefty and Smurfette talked to a few Smurfs about their run-in with Gargamel in the forest and how Clumsy was captured.
"Great Smurfiny Crickets, it's a good thing you two have escaped," Tapper said.
"But you should have smurfed after Gargamel and rescued the poor laddie from him," Duncan said.
"What matters most, my fellow Smurfs, is what we're going to smurf about it," Tapper said.
"I'd say that the two of you should help me smurf back to Gargamel's and help rescue Clumsy," Hefty said.
"Well, I'll show you that this Smurfsman isn't afraid of confronting Gargamel," Duncan said.
"Was somebody looking to rescue me?" a familiar voice broke in.
The four turned and saw that it was Clumsy, but somehow he looked as if he was more confident about himself. He leaped down from the top of the Smurf house he was standing on, caught on a pole, twirled around on it, and then landed in front of Smurfette, whirling her around until he pulled her close to him.
"Oh, my, Clumsy, you're certainly light on your feet!" Smurfette said, sounding impressed.
"But how is it that you're able to smurf that, Clumsy?" Hefty asked.
"It's all because of this little amulet that I'm smurfing," Clumsy said, removing it from his hat. "This makes you the opposite of what you actually are. Here, let me prove it."
He then saw Grouchy passing by and grabbed him. "I hate being grabbed," Grouchy said.
But then Clumsy pinned the amulet onto Grouchy's hat, and Grouchy's demeanor suddenly changed from sour to happy. "But I love you guys!" he said as he hugged Clumsy.
"That is amazing," Tapper said, sounding impressed.
"Aw, that whole thing is a trick," Hefty said in disbelief. He then took the amulet off Grouchy's hat and pinned it on his own. Suddenly he could feel his whole body beginning to sag until he collapsed under his own weight.
Duncan laughed. "Well, I guess this Opposite Amulet really proves what Hefty is while smurfing it."
Tapper looked at the amulet with some scrutiny. "I'd be careful smurfing around with magical items like that, especially if they come from people like Gargamel. Who knows what he's smurfing with this now that it's in Clumsy's possession?"
"You're not going to smurf around saying that magic is evil, are you, laddie?" Duncan asked.
"We must be careful smurfing with anything that doesn't originate from the Almighty, Duncan," Tapper said.

Chapter 3

"Truly I had no idea that Gargamel was using that amulet to smurf down where we live, Empath, to be honest," Clumsy said. "I was too busy smurfing the effects of that magic amulet that I didn't care about what I was smurfing with it."
"This smurf sensed you only had noble intentions with the amulet, Clumsy," Empath said. "But how did you find out that Gargamel was using the amulet to track you down?"
"That came later, when Gargamel smurfed up in our village, Empath," Clumsy said. "Narrator smurfed me the details of what Gargamel was smurfing out in the forest between then and now, from what I remember."
And as Clumsy continued with his story, Empath saw that Gargamel was out in the forest with Azrael, carrying a small crystal ball the size of a billiards ball, following its directions wherever the amulet would lead them.
"Now show me the way, magic ball," Gargamel said.
"At the mushroom, take the second exit," the magic ball said in a monotone voice.
Azrael saw a mushroom nearby on his right and alerted his master with a meow while pointing to it.
"No, not that exit, you nimrod!" Gargamel yelled. "It said the fourth one!"
"Um, actually, I said take the second exit," the magic ball calmly responded.
"Oh, fine!" Gargamel said, not wishing to get into an argument. He followed the direction that the magic ball wanted him to go in, with Azrael following. Then he saw a clearing up ahead. "I bet that the village is right behind that bush in front of us!" Gargamel said, rushing toward the bush in question to see what was beyond it.
But no sooner did he pass the bush, did Gargamel find himself landing on top of something, with his magic ball landing right on top of his head. Gargamel noticed that he landed on top of a sleeping bear.
"Turn around when possible," the magic ball calmly said. "Turn around when possible."
The bear opened its eyes to see who was standing on its belly. Gargamel tensed in fear of what was about to happen. "Oh, just passing through," he meekly said.
The bear growled fiercely, causing Gargamel to scream and for his life. The bear chased Gargamel up a tree and then down it, but the bear's immense weight at the speed it was going caused him to fall down and land on the ground unconscious.
Gargamel pointed at the bear and laughed at its mishap. "Everyone fears the great Gargamel!" he shouted with glee.
"Turn right at the bear and head straight," the magic ball said.
"Oh, come along, you sniveling simp, we might as well continue our journey," Gargamel said to Azrael, who was hiding out in a tree to avoid the bear. Azrael meowed as he joined his master on their journey together.

Back in the Smurf Village, the Smurfs were gathered around Lazy doing hundreds of push-ups, as if he had all the energy in the world to do it. They were amazed at what the amulet could do for someone like Lazy.
Then Papa Smurf showed up to see the crowd of Smurfs. "Great Smurfness, what's going on here?" Papa Smurf asked.
"It's Lazy, Papa Smurf," one of the Smurfs answered. "He's been smurfing push-ups like he's Hefty Smurf or something."
"And it's all because of this magic amulet Clumsy has smurfed, Papa Smurf," Brainy said.
"A magic amulet?" Papa Smurf asked. He noticed that was what Lazy was wearing on his hat, so he took it off, and Lazy instantly dropped to the ground, feeling exhausted.
"Oh, what a nightmare that was," Lazy muttered as he yawned and went to sleep.
"From what I understand of the amulet, Papa Smurf, it makes its smurfer the opposite of what they actually are," Brainy explained. "Clumsy became graceful when he smurfed it, Grouchy became nice, Hefty became sluggish, and Lazy became energetic."
"Clumsy, where did you get this magic amulet?" Papa Smurf asked as he turned toward Clumsy.
"Uh...I may have borrowed it from the wizard named Gargamel," Clumsy said, sounding a bit uneasy.
"Gargamel?" Papa Smurf said, sounding shocked. "Clumsy, how many times must I tell you and your fellow Smurfs that we are never to smurf things, even magical things, from that evil wizard..."
"GARGAMEL!" a few Smurfs shouted as they saw him standing behind Papa Smurf.
"I know who I'm talking about, my little Smurfs," Papa Smurf said, not wishing to be interrupted.
"No, Papa Smurf...Gargamel is here," Clumsy said, still shaking in fear.
But the instant Papa Smurf turned to look, he was snatched up by Gargamel's hand. "You should listen to your little Smurfs a bit more often than you talk, my elderly little friend," Gargamel said, laughing.
"Gargamel, how did you find your way to the Smurf Village?" Papa Smurf asked.
"Oh, that," Gargamel answered. "It's all thanks to one of your stupid little Smurfs, because of the amulet that I have given him. And now that I'm here, I might as well capture as many of you as I can!"
"Not if we can help it!" Duncan said, with Hefty and Tuffy standing beside him, armed with slingshots.
"Come on, Gutsy, let's smurf him right where it smurfs," Hefty said, preparing to aim at his target.
"Ready, aim, SMURF!" Tuffy shouted.
The three let loose a volley of smurfberries, which pelted Gargamel and stained his face and his robe with smurfberry juice. "Azrael, what are you waiting for?" Gargamel yelled. "Get them!"
Azrael then chased after the three Smurfs, causing them to drop their slingshots and run for their lives. The other Smurfs saw Gargamel and started heading for shelter, though the evil wizard managed to capture a few here and there.
"You can't escape me, you little blue gnomes," Gargamel said, laughing as he placed each Smurf he captured into a sack.
Clumsy dove into a well and hid inside there, listening as Gargamel and Azrael continued to chase down all the Smurfs. Soon all was quiet except for the sound of Smurfs that are all struggling to get out of the sack.
Clumsy climbed out of the well to see the village empty and Gargamel carrying away his captives. "You won't smurf away with this, Gargamel!" Papa Smurf said defiantly.
"Oh, save your breath, Grandpa," Gargamel said. "You're going to be the last to see your little Smurfs perish, and then I will turn all my attention on you, to make you suffer for all the years I have suffered because of you and your little Smurfs."
After Gargamel and Azrael left, Clumsy looked down to the ground and sighed. "Gosh, if I had only known what that magic amulet was actually smurfing when I smurfed it from Gargamel. I only wish that I have never smurfed eyes on it in the first place!"
And then he looked and saw the amulet lying on the ground. He was thinking of getting rid of it, but then remembered that Gargamel said it could make him the hero. He was wondering what to do with the amulet.
"Clumsy, thank the Almighty that you and I are the only ones who escaped Gargamel," another voice broke in. Clumsy looked and saw that it was Tapper.
"Tapper, we have to smurf to Gargamel's place and rescue our fellow Smurfs," Clumsy said.
"I believe the Almighty has chosen you of all Smurfs for that particular task, Clumsy," Tapper said.
"Me? But I'm Clumsy...and I can't be anything else without that amulet!" Clumsy said.
"You can be anything that you want to be, if you will just believe," Tapper said. "The amulet can help you, but in the end you have hidden resources to smurf into that you have yet to know about. The Almighty will protect you until you've accomplished your task. I will stay here and continue to pray for you and our fellow Smurfs' safety."
And then Clumsy knew in that moment what he was going to do.

Chapter 4

"Honestly, I didn't know that I smurfed 'hidden resources' within me that would help rescue my fellow Smurfs, Empath," Clumsy said. "I thought that I really needed that amulet to become a hero."
"This smurf understands, Clumsy," Empath said. "At times this smurf can feel so dependent on my own minds-eye abilities that this smurf forgets that this smurf is also a regular Smurf at heart. So what happened next?"
"Well, Gargamel was preparing something in his cauldron, and my fellow Smurfs were all wondering how they were going to escape, especially now that Papa Smurf has been captured," Clumsy said.
And as Clumsy continued his story, Empath saw that Gargamel was at work in his laboratory mixing something together when he heard Brainy crying out, "Release us immediately! Papa Smurf says that everyone is born equal and that nobody should live in captivity, right?"
Gargamel looked at Brainy with some thought on his mind. "Well, now that you have mentioned it..."
"And while you're at it, Gargamel, you should release that rabbit and...," Brainy was going to say, before Gargamel opened the cage and took Brainy out of it, closing it back up afterward.
"Azrael, you can eat this annoying one," Gargamel said, handing Brainy over to his cat, who then opened his mouth to receive the Smurf. Brainy struggled in fear to keep Azrael from swallowing him whole.
"Wait!" Papa Smurf cried out. "Gargamel, your cat will find Brainy much tastier if you cook him in a, uh..."
"In a Smurf stew!" Brainy yelped, still struggling.
"A Smurf stew, eh?" Gargamel said, looking at the helpless Smurf still struggling to keep himself from being swallowed. "Very well, then." He took Brainy from Azrael and placed him inside an empty kettle sitting on a table. He then turned to Papa Smurf and asked, "Remind me, Papa Smurf, how do you cook Smurf stew?"
"Don't tell me you don't know how to cook Smurf stew!" Brainy said. "Make sure you smurf this down so that you won't forget it. You need parsley, thyme...not the lemon kind, I'm allergic to it..."
"Don't forget the rosemary," Culinary added.
"Rosemary? I have some of that stuff in the back yard!" Gargamel said, his eyes perking up. "You stay here, I'll be right back." And so he put a lid on top of the kettle that Brainy was inside and closed it, preventing him from escaping.
"I hate cauldrons," Grouchy said as he and the other Smurfs watch Gargamel head out to the back yard.
"I don't know, maybe Papa Smurf likes them," Dimwitty said.
"Papa Smurf, where's Clumsy and Tapper?" Smurfette asked.
"I don't know, Smurfette," Papa Smurf answered. "They may be the only ones who can help us escape now."
"I hate thinking Clumsy is the only one who can rescue us," Grouchy said.
"I hate thinking that too, laddie, but he's our only hope now," Duncan said.

Meanwhile, Clumsy was looking down from the rafters at the Smurfs that are captured in Gargamel's laboratory, having sneaked into the castle through an upper window. "Well, here smurfs nothing," Clumsy said as he grabbed a rope and swung down.
"Hey, look, it's Clumsy!" one of the Smurfs said as they saw Clumsy swinging down.
"Oh no! Better get the bandages!" another Smurf said.
Then Clumsy swung back the other way, passing by the cages of Smurfs. Smurfette winced as she thought that Clumsy was going to hit a wall or something. But then he swung by again, and she saw him wink at her. "Don't worry. Graceful Smurf will smurf you out of there in a flash!" he said.
He swung toward a wall, and then walked sideways on it while still holding onto the rope until he reached a shelf, where he grabbed a key and then swung around a rafter and ended up near the cage where Papa Smurf was held captive. He inserted the key into the lock and opened the cage door.
"Clumsy, I've never been so glad to see you," Papa Smurf exclaimed.
"Uh, can't stop to talk right now," Clumsy said. "I've got the rest of the Smurfs to smurf free."
And soon Clumsy was gone in a flash, going around unlocking cages with the key. Meanwhile, Gargamel was in his garden with Azrael, looking for rosemary to put into his Smurf stew. The Smurfs made their escape with Gargamel thus distracted and strangely singing the Smurf song.
"Be careful, don't trip on your way out of here," Clumsy said as he watched every Smurf slip through the crack at the bottom of Gargamel's door.
"You've smurfed a good job rescuing us, Clumsy," Hefty said.
"Aye, laddie, you've got the spirit of a Smurfsman in you," Duncan said.
"Wait a minute," Papa Smurf said. "Where's Brainy?"
They looked around until they lifted up the lid of the kettle Brainy was thrown into. Brainy feared that Gargamel had returned and screamed. "AAAAH! Please don't eat me! I'm sure Dimwitty would taste much better in your Smurf stew!" he muttered as he cowered inside the kettle in fear.
"Brainy, it's us...me, Papa Smurf, Hefty, and Duncan," Clumsy said.
Brainy looked and felt relief when he saw who had rescued him. "Oh, heh heh," he said uneasily. "I always knew that Papa Smurf wouldn't leave one Smurf behind. You know that thing about Dimwitty I said...well, I was just kidding about that!"
"Well, laddie, let's worry about apologies later," Duncan said.
"Whatever Gutsy says," Hefty said. "Let's get smurfing out of here before..."
At that instant, Gargamel returned with Azrael to see that his Smurf cages are all empty, and then he saw the five Smurfs that were still left in his laboratory. "What in the blue blazes of Inferno...? How did you Smurfs escape?" he asked.
"Like we always do, Gargamel," Papa Smurf said. "We manage to smurf a way out of any predicament you can smurf us into."
"You're going to regret this!" Gargamel roared, ready to pounce on his prey.
The five Smurfs took it as their cue to start running. However, as Clumsy leaped off the kettle, he saw that the magic amulet fell off his hat, and soon, distracted by the loss, he ended up running straight into a stool's leg.
Gargamel laughed. "So the Clumsy Smurf has lost his amulet. That will make it all the more easier to capture you!"
The evil wizard swooped his hand down to catch Clumsy, but Clumsy escaped and ran the other direction. "Get back here, you dirty little gnome!" the wizard hissed.
Clumsy ran until he stumbled into a broom, which he knocked down, causing a bone to fly and knock a peg out of its holder, releasing a rope and causing a cage to fall down, causing a wooden spoon to fly in the air and knock into a couple of pots, knocking over a small vial that opened and poured its contents into the big cauldron.
"OH NO!" Gargamel cried out as he watched helplessly as the chain reaction caused his cauldron to explode, taking him and his cat both out in the blast.
Clumsy dove until he was out of the blast radius of the cauldron, safe and sound. He then saw that the magic amulet was in front of him on the floor. And then he saw the bunny that Gargamel caught earlier, and then he had an idea.
Gargamel watched, lying helpless on the floor with soot on his face, as Clumsy ran to the door of the castle, joining up with Hefty, Duncan, Brainy, and Papa Smurf. "Nice job there, Clumsy," Papa Smurf said, sounding pleased.
"Gosh, I guess it doesn't hurt for me to smurf two left feet, Papa Smurf," Clumsy said.
"It could be worse," Brainy said. "Clumsy could have been smurfed with two right feet, and then he would be..."
"Smurf it, Brainy!" Hefty said. "It's time for us to smurf back to the village."
"So what are we waiting for, laddies?" Duncan said. "Let's get a smurf on it."
"That's it, run away, you little Smurfs!" Gargamel ranted as the five Smurfs leave. "But you still haven't seen the last of me. I'll get my revenge on you if that's the last thing I ever do!"
And then he heard something growling at him. Gargamel turned and saw that it was the rabbit he caught earlier, but now it was wearing the amulet. "Nice bunny," Gargamel said fearfully.

Back in the village, the Smurfs celebrated their rescue by throwing a party for Clumsy, which made him feel so happy.
"Golly, I never thought the Smurfs would ever smurf me as a hero before," Clumsy said.
"Well, in the end, it was all because you cared so much for your fellow Smurfs, that you would be willing to smurf it all to make sure your fellow Smurfs would be safe and smurf, Clumsy," Tapper said.
"Yeah, and that special amulet of yours, laddie," Duncan said.
"By the way, Clumsy, what did you smurf with that magic amulet?" Smurfette asked.
"Oh, I just gave it to Mister Bunny Rabbit, Smurfette," Clumsy said. "Gargamel is going to be too busy smurfing with a mean bunny."
Smurfette giggled. "I would sure love to smurf there when that happens, Clumsy."
Papa Smurf came over to see Clumsy. "I hoped you have learned a valuable lesson in all this, Clumsy," Papa Smurf said.
"I sure did, Papa Smurf, that there's nothing better than my own natural abilities when it smurfs to helping my fellow Smurfs, even if it means being Clumsy," Clumsy said.
"I'm sure that you will grow out of being Clumsy someday, Clumsy," Tapper said.
"And that will be the day when we may call you Graceful Smurf, laddie," Duncan said, patting Clumsy on the back hard.
"Gosh, that would be great!" Clumsy said as he knocked over something that caused a chain reaction that knocked down all the Smurfs and caused all the party decorations to fall down.
"I still hate Clumsy for being Clumsy," Grouchy said as he picked himself up from the ground while the Smurfs all muttered.

"And that was the story of how I became a hero in the Smurf Village, Empath," Clumsy said. "I hope that it was worth it."
"This smurf couldn't be more pleased with you telling it, Clumsy," Empath said. "It only makes me this smurf wish this smurf was personally there to witness it."
"Aye, but it wouldn't have been much of a story if you were there, laddie," Duncan said.
"Well, I guess there's nothing left for me to smurf today but to turn in and rest," Clumsy said. "Thanks for letting me smurf you that story."
"There's no problem at all, Clumsy," Empath said, as Clumsy got up from his seat, accidentally stepped on Empath's foot, and tripped his way out of the tavern.
Tapper sighed as he watched. "Well, there goes Clumsy, being the very Smurf that he is named for smurfing, as usual."
"That's how I like the laddie, regardless of what he smurfs to us," Duncan said.
"This smurf thought you had faith that Clumsy would be willing to outgrow being Clumsy and be the Smurf that he truly wants to be, Tapper," Empath said.
"I still have that faith, Empath, but that doesn't change what he is right now among us," Tapper said. "What Clumsy will become from this day forward is still in the plans of the Almighty, to smurf His will upon him and upon us all for the direction of our lives, even if it's you marrying Smurfette in the future."
"This smurf would very much like to be married, Tapper...just not yet," Empath said. "There's still much living between now and what's to come that this smurf needs to participate in."
"Well, if you don't want to marry the lassie, just smurf her my way, laddie," Duncan said.
"Smurf the most of every day while you can, Empath, because every day is a gift from God, and who knows what the future may smurf for you?" Tapper said.
Empath smiled as he raised his glass to that thought and drank.
