Empath's personal journal.
Once again it is Valentine's Day in the Smurf Village, and as usual the Smurfs are busy preparing to celebrate it by making up special gifts that they can give to Smurfette for that special day. Of course, for this year's Valentine's Day, Smurfette suggested that we should have a dance so that everybody could enjoy themselves and have an opportunity to dance with Smurfette. This idea has received unanimous support from the Smurfs, even though Grouchy simply states that he hates dancing. However, this smurf does feel concerned for two Smurfs in the village -- Vanity and Century, who feel like they're outcasts because they feel attracted only to themselves. This smurf wishes that there is something that this smurf can do to make the two Smurfs feel better about themselves and that their fellow Smurfs do care about them as well, but alas, this seems like something only Cupid the cherub could ever hope to cure them of, if that's possible.
-----
Empath and Polaris went around the village during their usual rounds of inspecting all the daily activities that were taking place, seeing for themselves that every Smurf is busy preparing themselves for Valentine's Day.
"This one is curious as to why the Smurfs would engage in an activity of expressing their love for Smurfette, even if it seems evident that most of her amorous interest is in you, Empath," Polaris said.
"Smurfette is free to feel whatever she wants for her fellow Smurfs, Polaris," Empath said. "That's one of the things that this smurf and her have agreed upon when we both entered this relationship together, and that this smurf will not feel jealous if she decides to spend her time with any other Smurf besides this smurf."
"You are only fortunate that there's just one Smurf in the village who possesses whatever characteristics Smurfette happens to see in you, Empath," Polaris said. "This one would think that your willingness to not be jealous will be challenged should be there another Smurf of your type that Smurfette finds herself attracted to."
Empath chuckled at the thought. "Another Smurf like this smurf? Well, that would be interesting to witness if that should ever happen. By the way, what do you plan on giving Smurfette for Valentine's Day?"
"Why are you assuming that this one has an amorous interest in Smurfette, Empath?" Polaris asked.
"Oh, come on, Polaris," Empath said. "You don't find Smurfette to be the least bit attractive to you?"
"Smurfette is indeed a pleasant enough person that this one would want to be more acquainted with her, Empath, but this one does not find her 'attractive' in whatever sense you would want to define the term," Polaris responded.
"So who or what exactly are you attracted to?" Empath asked.
"You should know that Psyches are not created to have physical attractions toward any person, since the Psyche Master created Psyches mainly for the purpose of obeying his will," Polaris answered.
"That sounds like something the Psyche Master wants you to believe, but you're living among the Smurfs now," Empath said. "You've got to feel something besides what you normally would feel as a Psyche, since there's nothing here that's inhibiting your emotions."
"What this one feels here is liberated to live however this one chooses to live within reasonable limits, and if that includes not having feelings of attraction toward anyone, then so be it," Polaris said, sounding like he didn't want to be questioned.
"Okay, okay, this smurf understands and acknowledges," Empath said defensively. "It's just that this smurf doesn't want to see you lonely without anyone for company."
"This one does not need to fear the possibility of loneliness as long as there are this one's fellow Smurfs for this one to interact wth, Empath," Polaris said.
The both of them entered Tapper's Tavern, where they saw its proprietor hard at work doing some cleaning. "Smurf o' the morning to you, lads," Tapper greeted. "What smurfs you to my tavern this fine Valentine's Day morning?"
"This smurf and Polaris are just observing all the preparation activities leading to the party we're going to be having, Tapper," Empath said. "Do you have enough drinks for the Smurfs to enjoy?"
"Aye, Empath, and I also have seltzer for your friend, since I know very much how he can't smurf his liquor from just one glass of sarsaparilla ale," Tapper said. "Though on this day that we celebrate love for one another as well as romantic love, I do worry much about our friend Vanity."
"What is it about Vanity that requires your concern for him on this day, fellow Tapper?" Polaris asked.
"You know, that he's a Smurf who doesn't smurf the same kind of attractions as every other Smurf in the village, my good Polaris," Tapper said. "Most of the time he spends smurfing himself in the mirror, thinking about the one Smurf he is enamored to, and I keep wondering what's going to happen to him if he can't satisfy his desires with just his reflection."
"You think that Vanity might possibly turn to...being attracted to another male Smurf?" Empath asked.
"Aye, that is the very thing that I fear of him," Tapper said. "In fact, that is also what I fear for much of this village because we only have one Smurfette to smurf our affections to, since there's only one of us that can end up marrying her when it's all said and smurfed."
"But such behavior would not be appropriate or tolerated in this village among your people, and it would also go against what you believe in your religion, Tapper," Polaris said.
"I would be the last Smurf in the village who would want to force a Smurf to live a life that's entirely pleasing to the Almighty, Polaris, but apart from trying to be a good witness, what else can I smurf for anyone?" Tapper said. "We live in a fallen world that's smurfed with the temptations of the flesh and the devil, and I don't want to see the village smurf the way of other civilizations such as Sodom and Gomorrah."
"This smurf shares the same sentiments, and doesn't envy the position you're placed in with your beliefs, Tapper," Empath said. "This smurf just wishes that there was a way to satisfy every Smurf's desire besides just going to the Imaginarium to fulfill them."
"This one is rather surprised to find out that the first use of the Imaginarium was to allow certain Smurfs to share private intimate moments with an imagined version of Smurfette," Polaris said. "But what this one finds rather appalling is that some Smurfs have developed a fantasy setting that is called 'Psychelian Love Slave', as if they want to experiment with beings besides their own kind."
"Well, like every creature in the forest, a Smurf's got his needs to attend to," Empath said.
"I'm not sure Smurfette would like the idea of how the Smurfs are using the Imaginarium, but alas, we can't control the imaginations of our fellow Smurfs now, can we?" Tapper said with a hint of distaste in his voice. "Unfortunately, our imaginations can end up smurfing us into total depravity if there's no check in our spirits to keep us from smurfing into things that even Papa Smurf in all his wisdom wouldn't approve of."
"You mean that if there's nothing to keep you Smurfs from ultimately becoming like the savage creatures that the Psyche Master deeply despises, then even you, Tapper, would fall prey to fulfilling such base desires without caring who gets hurt in the process," Polaris said.
"That's exactly what I'm smurfing, my fellow Polaris," Tapper said. "The Almighty smurfs in the book of Jeremiah that the heart is deceitful above all things and is desperately wicked, and who can know it except for the Almighty who alone tests hearts and rewards everyone according to their smurfs. Even I can be surprised at what He reveals in my heart that makes me shudder and realize that I'm not as perfect as He would want me to be, that I have not lived up to the model of His only begotten Son."
"That's hard for this smurf to accept you as being, Tapper, for all the years we have known each other," Empath said. "But you know your own self better than this smurf knows my own self, and you know what your Almighty requires of you better than any Smurf, so this smurf can't judge you on what this smurf doesn't know of your religion."
"Nonetheless, the idea of seeking purity in body, mind, heart, and spirit is a noble quest for a living being to undertake even among a group such as your own people, Empath," Polaris said.
"As long as this smurf isn't forced into a religion that this smurf can't accept in this smurf's own heart, then this smurf would have to agree with you, Polaris," Empath said.
-----
Meanwhile, Sassette was with Papa Smurf in his laboratory that morning, because she had an important question that was on her mind, and she felt more comfortable asking him the question than asking anyone else, including Brainy. "Pappy Smurf, where do the cherubs like Cupid smurf from?" she asked.
"The cherubs smurf from the Land of Myth, just like our friend Michael the leprechaun and Smurfette's friend Blue Eyes, my little Sassette," Papa Smurf said. "Their job is to help creatures in the world smurf in love with each other so that they can smurf families together and teach them the proper ways of smurfing."
"So we're just smurfed into this world to create families?" Sassette said. "That doesn't sound much like smurfing to me, if we can't also smurf any fun with each other."
"There's nothing to prevent us from smurfing any fun in our smurfing, Sassette, but we must know what kind of fun is helpful to ourselves and others as well as what kind of fun isn't," Papa Smurf said. "That is why when you get to be an older Smurfette, you must be careful of who you smurf yourself to and not abuse the sacred gift that Mother Nature has smurfed you in your maidenhood."
"But I just don't feel attracted to any of the Smurflings that are my age, Pappy," Sassette said.
"You're still a young Smurfling, and you have years ahead of you before the time comes when you do feel attracted to your fellow Smurflings," Papa Smurf said. "Being a Mama Smurf is a very important responsibility that's going to require a dedicated and loving Smurfette to attend to when she smurfs of age to become one. You are very fortunate to have a Baby Smurf in the village to practice such duties with right now, but all the same, you must never become a Mama Smurf until the time smurfs when you are ready to smurf the role for yourself."
"I won't, Pappy Smurf, I promise," Sassette said. "I only wish that my fellow Smurflings would smurf the same way."
"If they truly care for you as a Smurfette, Sassette, then they will respect that you won't become a Mama Smurf until one of them marries you," Papa Smurf said.
"Anyway, are all the cherubs from the Land of Myth as good as Cupid is, Pappy Smurf?" Sassette asked.
Papa Smurf stroked his beard as he thought about the question. "Hmmm...I'm not sure that I can quite answer that, Sassette, since Cupid is the only cherub that I personally know of."
Just then, there was a knocking on the door. Papa Smurf went to the door to open it, and found Clumsy standing there. "Uh, hi, Papa Smurf," he said, speaking as if he didn't want anybody else to know what he was doing. "I was wondering if I can smurf to you in private about something."
"I'm rather busy with Sassette at the moment, Clumsy, but I may smurf you some time to talk afterward, once we're done," Papa Smurf said.
"That's okay, Pappy Smurf...I can smurf with you later," Sassette said as she got up from her seat in the laboratory and headed for the door. Papa Smurf allowed Sassette to leave while also letting Clumsy to enter.
"So what's on your mind that you need to smurf to me about, Clumsy?" Papa Smurf asked gently as they both sat down together.
"Uh, I don't feel comfortable letting every Smurf know about this, Papa Smurf, because every Smurf will think that I'm not a normal Smurf for what it is that I'm feeling right now," Clumsy said.
"What exactly are you feeling right now that's making you think you're not normal, Clumsy?" Papa Smurf asked.
"I'm feeling right now...like I'm in love with Brainy Smurf," Clumsy said with some difficulty.
"In love with Brainy Smurf?" Papa Smurf asked. "You mean that you love him as a friend, right?"
"Uh, not exactly like that, Papa Smurf," Clumsy answered. "I feel like I'm...well, the same way that I would feel for Smurfette...only..."
"Oh, that kind of feeling," Papa Smurf said, seeming to understand what Clumsy was trying to say. "Well, it's natural for a Smurf your age to feel as if you're confused over what you're attracted to as a male Smurf."
"It's natural for me to feel attracted to a male Smurf?" Clumsy asked.
"No, I don't mean it like that, Clumsy," Papa Smurf answered. "I mean, when you do have desires for a mate, you also have confusion over what you're supposed to be attracted to, even if it's for things that may not smurf you any good in the long run, such as being attracted to Brainy Smurf. It's just a phase that you're smurfing through, that's all."
"I'm just smurfing through a phase, Papa Smurf?" Clumsy said. "But what if this isn't just a phase? What's going to happen to me if I can't find a mate to smurf?"
"Mother Nature knows exactly what she's smurfing when she made you before you were born, Clumsy," Papa Smurf said. "I'm sure that one day you'll smurf over what you're feeling for Brainy Smurf and you'll be happy with whatever kind of life Mother Nature and Father Time will smurf you in the future."
"I don't know if I could feel happy, Papa Smurf," Clumsy said. "I told Brainy one time that I love him, but I haven't told him how I really feel for him. I don't even know what he would smurf of me if he knew."
"If Brainy is truly your friend, he would understand what it is you're feeling for him, but that doesn't mean that he will feel the same way towards you, Clumsy," Papa Smurf said. "For now, I would suggest that you be careful of smurfing the right time and place for you to tell him what you're feeling, so that neither of you would feel so awkward about sharing your feelings for each other."
"Uh, okay, Papa Smurf, I will try to smurf that," Clumsy said.
"We will still love you, Clumsy, regardless of how this situation smurfs out," Papa Smurf said as he watched Clumsy get up from his seat and head for the door.
At the same time that Clumsy was leaving, though, Brainy was just approaching Papa Smurf's laboratory. "Oh, hello there, Clumsy," he greeted. "What were you smurfing with Papa Smurf right about now?"
"Oh...nothing, Brainy," Clumsy answered rather nervously. "It was just about how I was feeling this morning."
"Clumsy Smurf, why are you acting as if you're trying to hide something from me?" Brainy asked as he looked at his friend with suspicion.
"Me, trying to hide something from you, Brainy?" Clumsy said. "I would never smurf that to you, because...we are friends, right?"
"Oh, never mind," Brainy said, dismissing the whole conversation. "I'm sure that it must be something that doesn't have anything to smurf with me, as usual. Now if you don't mind, I have something very important to talk to Papa Smurf about."
"Oh, sure, Brainy...I'm just going to smurf you later at the party, okay?" Clumsy said as he headed away from the door before Brainy knocked on it to get Papa Smurf's attention.
Clumsy sighed with relief as he walked away. "Now how am I going to tell Brainy the truth about how I feel for him? It's not going to be easy to just tell him that I'm in love with him or..."
"Hello there, Clumsy," Smurfette said as she passed by him, heading in the direction of the dining area, getting it all set up for the night's party.
"Oh, uh, hello there, Smurfette," Clumsy said. "I can't wait to smurf you a dance at the party."
"I'm sure that every Smurf in the village would want to dance with me tonight," Smurfette said. "It's not like I have another Smurfette my age around here that I can ever compete with."
"Yeah...there just isn't another Smurfette like you, Smurfette," Clumsy said, sounding rather uncomfortable.
"What's wrong, Clumsy?" Smurfette asked, sounding concerned. "You sound like there's something terrible on your mind that's making you feel so unsmurfy."
"Uh...I don't feel like talking about it to every Smurf, Smurfette," Clumsy said. "It's something that I would rather tell Papa Smurf and Brainy about, if you know what I mean."
Smurfette sighed. "I'm sorry, Clumsy. I shouldn't make you feel like you're being smurfed on the spot to tell me anything. I'm sure that it's something that you'll feel better about when you tell them in private."
"Yeah...that's what I'm smurfing to do sometime soon," Clumsy said as he looked down to the ground instead of directly at Smurfette.
"I'll smurf you later at the party when everything is ready, okay?" Smurfette said pleasantly before she continued on her way, leaving Clumsy feeling unsure of what to do with himself.
-----
In the Land of Myth, Cupid was getting ready for his duty on Valentine's Day to spread love throughout the world. His daughter Charity was watching him as he put on his quiver of love arrows over his shoulder.
"When can I go with you to become a true cherub like you, Father?" Charity asked.
"Someday soon, when you are old enough to handle a bow like me, my child," Cupid answered. "Being a good cherub requires having the right kind of spirit and heart, not to mention a lot of practice in aiming, because you never know what you're going to hit with your arrows."
"Father, you never seem to have a problem with anything but getting your arrows to hit straight," Charity said.
"That comes with being an old cherub like me, youngster," Cupid said. "When you've been in the world spreading love to all creatures as long as I have been, you're going to end up making mistakes with age."
"But I feel more than ready to join with you now, Father," Charity said. "Besides, there's more to love than just getting creatures to be intimate with each other so they can have families. There's also an unconditional love that's just so pure that I feel that it needs to be shared."
"I'm sure that you'll get your chance to prove yourself as a cherub, my darling," Cupid said. "For now, I want you to be good and keep yourself to your studies so that you'll know what to do when you are given your own set of love arrows."
"Okay, Father," Charity said. "I just want you to be careful when you are in the human's world."
"Don't worry about that, sweetie...I usually am careful," Cupid said, giving his daughter a kiss before he disappeared from sight in a poof of smoke.
Just then, Charity was joined by her father's friends Phileo and Xenia. "Charity, do you know where your father is right now?" Phileo asked.
"He just left a moment ago, Uncle Phileo," Charity answered. "Why, what's going on?"
"Oh dear, it is that dreadful rogue Eros," Xenia said, sounding fearful. "He's on the loose again."
"Eros?" Charity said, not knowing what they are talking about.
"He's a cherub whom we do not mention except as a caution to young cherubs-in-training, because all he wants to spread into the world is lust, my child," Phileo explained.
"He's really that dangerous?" Charity asked. "There's something that you can do about it, right?"
"This may be the time when you will have to join your father, to undo all the damage that Eros may cause with his evil lust arrows," Xenia said as she gave Charity her bow and quiver of arrows.
"Hey, this is great," Charity said, sounding pleased at first. "I mean, I didn't expect to be made a true cherub this soon in my life, but still..."
"We know that you'll do a good job as a cherub, sweetheart," Phileo said. "Now hurry and be on your way so that you can help your father defeat Eros' evil plan."
"I'll do my best, I promise you," Charity said after she put on the quiver of arrows. Soon she also disappeared from sight in a poof of smoke.

Back in the Smurf Village, Vanity was just stepping out of his house, looking at himself in the mirror. "Why, I would smurf a walk with you anywhere, you handsome devil," Vanity said to his reflection. "It's too bad that the rest of the village can't be as beautiful to smurf at as you."
He started on his way, not paying any attention to where he was going until he walked straight into Hefty. "Hey, watch where you're smurfing there, Vanity," Hefty said after they had bumped into each other and fell down.
"Oh, I'm very sorry," Vanity said as he picked himself and his mirror up from the ground. "I'm just too in love with myself to smurf any attention to where it is I'm smurfing."
"That's just the problem with you, Vanity...you're always in love with yourself," Hefty said. "In fact, you're so in love with yourself that I don't know if you're even a true Smurf."
"Why would I not be a true Smurf?" Vanity said. "After all, I have the same skin tone as you, which I think has a better complexion than yours. I also have the same blue eyes as you, though I don't think yours are anywhere as smurfy as mine. And I have the same physical build as yours, though mine is much slimmer than yours. And furthermore..."
"Oh, why do I even bother trying to smurf with you?" Hefty said, sounding rather frustrated. "It's not like you'll ever understand what it means to be a true Smurf anyway."
Vanity watched as Hefty walked away. "Well, some Smurfs just can't handle the criticism," he snorted. He then looked at himself in the mirror. "At least you're the only one around here who truly understands me. I'm sure that Hefty will get over how he's smurfing right now because he just can't smurf a candle to me."
Again Vanity continued to walk and pay no attention to where he was going until he walked straight into another Smurf...only this time it was Smurfette. "Oh, Vanity, you shouldn't be walking around smurfing at your mirror like that," Smurfette said after she and Vanity fell down.
"Oh, I'm terribly sorry, Smurfette," Vanity said as he picked himself and his mirror up from the ground. "There's only so many hours in the day for me to smurf at myself that I need to smurf all the time I can get."
"But you are going to smurf a dance with me at tonight's party, aren't you?" Smurfette asked.
"Why, sure, Smurfette," Vanity answered. "I guarantee that you'll be dancing with the most handsome Smurf on the dance floor when I smurf the party in my latest suit."
"Oh, Vanity, you don't need to dress so fancy to impress me," Smurfette said. "I'll be happy to dance with you...and you...smurfing just the way you are right now."
"But really, Smurfette, you haven't smurfed the best of me until you see the suit that I'll be smurfing when I smurf you on the dance floor," Vanity said. "You're going to think that Vanity is a whole new Smurf."
"Well, if that's how you feel, then I'll be waiting to see you in your new fancy suit, Vanity," Smurfette said. "Enjoy the rest of the day...I'll be smurfing you later."
Vanity watched as Smurfette walked away. "Wow, what a dazzling Smurfette...uh, where was I...oh, yes, here I am," he said as he turned his attention back to his mirror. "Did you miss me, because I miss you, too. I'm sure that we can go somewhere that we won't be interrupted."
Vanity continued to walk and pay no attention to where he was going until he walked straight into another Smurf...only this time it was Clumsy. "Oops...sorry there, Vanity," Clumsy said after he and Vanity fell down together.
Vanity sighed. "With all this activity smurfing on, I'm never going to find somewhere that I can smurf with myself in peace."
"Well, at least you've got somebody to smurf to when you're all alone," Clumsy said, letting out a heavy sigh.
"Heavens to Smurfatroid, what seems to be wrong with you today?" Vanity asked, sounding concerned.
"Uh, it's something that I don't feel comfortable telling any Smurf about, but it's something that I feel for another Smurf that I wish that I could tell him about," Clumsy said.
"Are you saying that you're in love with another male Smurf?" Vanity asked.
"Shhh...I don't want the whole village to know about that," Clumsy said, trying to keep his voice low and also suggesting that Vanity did the same. "It's just that I love Smurfette...and I also love Brainy...but I don't know how to handle what I feel for the both of them."
"Well, why not just tell the both of them how you truly feel for each other?" Vanity asked.
"I just think the other Smurfs are going to laugh at me and tell me that I'm not a normal Smurf," Clumsy said.
"I don't think you're going to be happy with yourself until you finally admit to yourself who you really are and who you really love, like I have," Vanity said.
"Gee, you really think so?" Clumsy said, sounding taken by Vanity's heartfelt honesty.
"I would be the last Smurf who would ever tell you to smurf yourself as anything other than your true self, if that's how you honestly feel about Brainy and Smurfette," Vanity said.
"Gosh, what am I going to even say to them? How am I going to tell them how I really feel for either of them?" Clumsy asked, sounding very unsure of himself.
"Let's just say for the smurf of argument that I'm Brainy and that you want to tell me something important that you don't want the whole village to know about, Clumsy," Vanity said. "What would be the first thing on your mind to smurf to me?"
Clumsy thought about that for a minute. "Uh...Brainy, I've got something important on my mind that I need to smurf to you, which is how I feel towards you."
"Oh, Clumsy, what is so important on your mind that you need to smurf to me about?" Vanity asked, roleplaying as Brainy.
"Uh...it's just...well, I feel that...oh...gosh, I just can't do it, Vanity," Clumsy said as he stumbled over his own words. "I can't imagine you being Brainy when all I smurf before me is you."
Vanity sighed. "I don't know what else I can smurf for you, Clumsy. Try smurfing to yourself in the mirror and imagine what Brainy might say before you try smurfing to him in person."
"Oh, all right, Vanity, I'll try to smurf it that way," Clumsy said before he walked off.
Vanity watched Clumsy as he walked off, feeling his heart going out to him. "I just hope Clumsy won't be disappointed if Brainy doesn't feel for him the same way that he feels for Brainy," he said to his reflection before he continued on.

Out in the forest, a cherub with ruddy skin, dark red hair shaped into horns, and bat wings was hovering around, armed with a bow and a quiver of arrows tipped with flaming dark red hearts. "Now let's see whose hearts I can set on fire with my lust arrows," he said to himself, smiling in anticipation of his first victims.
He saw two male adult humans working together on cutting down trees -- one of whom is named Pierre and the other Jacques. "So, Pierre, what do you plan on doing for sweet Angelique on this Valentine's Day?" Jacques asked.
"You'll see, Jacques," Pierre answered. "It will be the biggest cake you have ever feasted your eyes upon."
"Bah, you and your cakes," Jacques snorted. "She'll be more impressed with the wood carving of two lovebirds that will I present to her at the feast tonight."
"I tell you, the way to that woman's heart is through her stomach," Pierre said with a snort. "There's no way that she's going to find your wood carvings to be anything impressive."
"That's what you think, you puffed-up pastry chef," Jacques shot back. "A wood carving will last a lot longer than your cakes."
"And she'll end up using it for a parchment weight, just like everybody else does with everything you create, you worm-headed woodsmith," Pierre countered.
"My wood carvings will always be better than your food, Pierre," Jacques said.
"My food will always be better than your wood carvings, Jacques," Pierre said.
The cherub watched as the two humans continued to argue with each other over impressing Angelique with their gifts when he decided that it was getting boring to watch. "Might as well save Angelique the trouble of dealing with these two numbskulls and watch them fall for each other," he said as he plucked an arrow from his quiver and fired it straight between the two humans.
Suddenly the arrow had its effect, as the two humans stopped arguing altogether. "Oh, Pierre, why are we wasting our time arguing over silly little Angelique when I find you so much more attractive than she is?" Jacques said.
"Oh, Jacques, why do I find you more attractive than Angelique is right now?" Pierre said.
"I never thought you'd ever notice me like that," Jacques said, sounding like he was flattered. "And you're not so bad-looking for a pastry chef."
"Wait until I show you what kind of meal I am planning to cook for you tonight, my dear," Pierre said.
The cherub watched the two male adult humans kissing each other, grinning maliciously at what he had done. "Let your hearts burn for each other and see poor Angelique become miserable because neither of you will pay any attention to her," he said with a laugh before he disappeared.

Back in the village, Hefty was helping Handy set up the equipment that was going to be used to play the music at the dance party they were going to have in the dining hall.
"So are you planning on being the first to ask Smurfette to dance with you, Hefty?" Handy asked.
"You bet I am, Handy," Hefty answered. "There's no way I'm going to let that star-smurfed freak have the first dance with her as long as I'm around."
"You know he's going to let you dance with her anyway, so why are you smurfing this into a competition?" Handy asked.
"I was the first to smurf her out in the forest, Handy," Hefty said. "Therefore I should be the first to smurf anything when it comes to smurfing anything with Smurfette."
"Like even possibly marrying her?" Handy said with a laugh. "Well, good luck with that. I'd bet good smurfs that Empath is going to marry her before anybody else does."
"So you're not going to try and ask her to marry you?" Hefty said. "No wonder the competition for her heart is so lacking around here."
"I love Smurfette, but Marina's the one that I love the most, Hefty," Handy said. "If it's possible, I'd like to be smurfing in her world forever and ever as her one true love."
"A Smurf and a mermaid...that's a match smurfed in Elysium, all right," Hefty said with a bit of sarcasm. "But then I'd rather see that happen than the likes of Brainy and Clumsy smurfing together in the same way."
"Brainy and Clumsy?" Handy asked. "What makes you think of those two wanting to smurf the knot together? Not that I think anything like that should happen in this lifetime or any other, but still..."
"I don't know, Handy," Hefty said. "I just see the two of them together a lot and it makes me wonder about what's smurfing on with them, that's all. Not that I think that what I think is smurfing on is really smurfy to me, but I'm not them and they're not me. And I sure as smurf wouldn't want to be either of them, if you know what I mean."
"If those two are smurfy with each other, that's smurfy enough for me, I should say," Handy said as he looked at the work he and Hefty had accomplished. "Well, Spinner should be all set to smurf his music at the dance tonight. I might as well go back to my workshop and smurf myself ready for later on."
"I'll see you later, Handy," Hefty said as they both left the dining hall and headed off to their own houses. Hefty was scatting the Smurf song while jogging toward his house when suddenly he was struck with a heart-tipped arrow. He stopped jogging when he felt something strange coming upon him, like desires for something or someone entirely different.
Tuffy noticed Hefty just standing there, looking sort of strange. "Hey, are you all right, Hefty?" he asked.
"I don't know what smurfed over me, Tuffy," Hefty said with a weird look in his eyes. "All of a sudden, I'm finding myself feeling attracted to someone else."
"Feeling attracted to someone else?" Tuffy asked, sounding curious. "Hefty, there's no other Smurf besides Smurfette that you can feel attracted to."
"No one else...until now," Hefty said, still looking at Tuffy as if he was desiring something of his friend. "Tell me, Tuffy, do you think that I'm attractive?"
"Attractive?" Tuffy said, sounding a bit repulsed. "Hefty, you're smurfing a bit too weird for me!"
"I know that you're smurfing of me, because you want to be just as big and strong as me," Hefty said as he advanced on Tuffy. "You just can't help yourself, can you?"
"Okay, that's it, Hefty...I'm going to take you to Papa Smurf right this minute!" Tuffy said, sounding like he had enough of Hefty's strange behavior.
"Oh, please, take me to Papa Smurf...that way we can smurf for his blessing right now," Hefty said, still clinging onto Tuffy like he wanted to be romantically involved with him.
Then suddenly a heart-tipped arrow struck Tuffy, and he began to feel something strange coming on him at that minute. "On the other hand," Tuffy said as he looked at Hefty, "why do we need to go to Papa Smurf right now? I think we can smurf someplace private that no Smurf needs to know about."
"Now you're talking," Hefty said, as they both held each other in their arms and kissed right at that spot.
At that moment, the Smurflings were passing by when they noticed Hefty and Tuffy smooching with each other. "Slithering serpents, what unsmurfiness is going on here?" Sassette asked.
That got the two Smurfs' attentions as they broke off their embrace. "Hey, don't you Smurflings have something better to smurf with your time than to watch other Smurfs?" Hefty asked, sounding irritated.
"Yeah, what's smurfing on here is nobody else's smurfness," Tuffy said defensively.
"Well, if it's really nobody else's smurfness, why are you smurfing this smurfery out in public anyway?" Snappy asked.
"Just go away!" Hefty shouted angrily. "We don't need you four smurfing at us like there's something wrong!"
"All right, all right, we're going," Slouchy said, sounding like he wasn't interested in starting something the Smurflings would come to regret.
As the four Smurflings continued walking, Nat said, "I get the unsmurfy feeling that something's wrong with those two. What they're smurfing just isn't natural."
"Who knows?" Snappy said. "Maybe Hefty actually smurfed those feelings for Tuffy and he didn't feel like he was smurf enough to admit it."
"Nat is right, you Smurflings...what those two are smurfing isn't natural at all," Sassette said. "Maybe those two are under some sort of spell that's smurfed upon them."
"Yeah, but who would smurf that kind of spell on them?" Slouchy asked. "I don't think this is anything that Cupid would smurf."
"I don't know, but we'd better tell Papa Smurf about this, even if Hefty and Tuffy don't like us informing him about it," Nat suggested.
"Well, I think we should just leave those two musclebound Smurfs alone, if you ask me," Snappy said.
"Snappy, you know that Mother Nature doesn't like it when two creatures of the same gender start smurfing like this," Sassette said.
"Yeah, Papa Smurf keeps reminding us that she created males and females to smurf that way only to each other because she wants them to be able to smurf families," Slouchy said.
"So what? Those two are not hurting each other or anyone else!" Snappy said.
"Then what about Smurfette?" Sassette asked. "Doesn't she deserve to have some Smurf marry her someday?"
"She's got Empath to smurf in love with, she'll be fine," Snappy said.
"Well, we're going to tell Papa Smurf about this, whether you want to join us or not," Nat said adamantly.
Then suddenly two heart-tipped arrows struck both Snappy and Slouchy, and they began to feel rather strange and different. "Aw, go ahead, Sassette...tell Papa Smurf about it," Snappy said.
"Yeah, me and Snappy have other things to smurf," Slouchy said as the two of them looked at each other.
Nat and Sassette watched as Snappy and Slouchy walked off hand-in-hand with each other. "Gee, now even they are starting to act really weird," Sassette commented.
"We'd better get smurfing to Papa Smurf before this smurfs any worse, Sassette," Nat said.
-----
Meanwhile, Handy had just reached the door to his workshop when he had a heart-tipped arrow strike him all of a sudden. He began to feel the same kind of strangeness that Hefty and the other Smurfs struck with the arrows were feeling.
Just then Carpenter came passing by. "Hey, Handy, just smurfed by to let you know that I've got a bunch of wooden planks ready for you to smurf, and I'm also smurfing back the tools that I borrowed from you," he said before he noticed that Handy looked rather strange. "Handy, is there something wrong with you?"
"Oh, I didn't know what I was smurfing about," Handy said before he just simply stared at Carpenter. "By the way, has any Smurf told you that you've got the smurfiest blue eyes in the whole village?"
Carpenter laughed. "Okay, Handy, I get it. This whole thing is a joke."
"No, I am not kidding, Carpenter," Handy said. "For some reason, there's no other Smurf in the world that I feel more attracted to than you right about now."
"Please, Handy, you need to smurf a hold of yourself," Carpenter said. "This behavior of yours is smurfing to be mighty strange smurfing from you."
"Right now I would rather be holding you," Handy said as he grabbed Carpenter and pulled him close.
"Handy, I'm just not that kind of Smurf," Carpenter said, struggling to get himself free.
"Come on, just admit it...you want to know what it's like to be alone with me," Handy said, pushing himself even closer.
Then suddenly Carpenter was struck with the same type of arrow, and began feeling the same thing himself. "Well, as a matter of fact, you do smurf rather attractive in those overalls," Carpenter responded.
The two of them began to kiss each other, until they heard a female voice say, "Handy Smurf!" They both let go of each other and turned to see who it was. "Smurfette!" they said together.
"You shouldn't be smurfing up on your fellow Smurfs like that, Smurfette," Handy said, not liking how he was being interrupted.
"I'm sorry, Handy, but I just wanted to know if everything was all set for Spinner to play his music at the party tonight," Smurfette said.
"Uh, yeah, me and Hefty smurfed everything in place," Handy replied.
Smurfette looked at both Handy and Carpenter suspiciously. "Is there something smurfing on here?" she asked.
"Uh, no, Smurfette, nothing smurfing on at all," Carpenter said.
"Yeah, Carpenter was just smurfing back the tools that he borrowed from me, that's all," Handy said.
Smurfette still looked at them as if she was wondering about something. "Hmmm...well, maybe I'm just imagining things or something." She shook her head when she couldn't put her finger on what was it she thought she was seeing. "Anyway, I might as well smurf with Party to see if he's got all the decorations ready for the party. I'll smurf you two later."
"See you, Smurfette!" Handy and Carpenter both said together. And then they turned to each other again and kissed.
-----
Meanwhile, Nat and Sassette were with Papa Smurf in his laboratory, telling him about what they had witnessed with Hefty and Tuffy and then with Snappy and Slouchy.
"Are you absosmurfly sure that you saw Hefty and Tuffy smurfing with each other like that?" Papa Smurf asked.
"I swear to Mother Nature, that's what we saw, Papa Smurf," Nat answered.
"We're not smurfing any of this up, Pappy," Sassette added.
"Hmmm, that is very strange behavior smurfing from those Smurfs," Papa Smurf said, stroking his beard while thinking of what may be the cause. "I appreciate the two of you informing me about this, and I'll see what I can smurf to control this behavior before it smurfs out of hand."
"Is there anything you want us to do, Pappy Smurf?" Sassette asked.
"I'm not sure what I would suggest, other than the two of you not smurf alone from each other and not smurf out in the open, Sassette," Papa Smurf answered. "I'll let Empath and Polaris know about this incident so that they can smurf out for what may be causing it."
"Oh, thank you, Papa Smurf," Nat said before he and Sassette left the laboratory.
At the same moment, Empath and Polaris had entered. "This smurf senses that there's something wrong in the village that requires this smurf's attention, Papa Smurf," Empath said.
"Nat and Sassette had just informed me that Hefty and Tuffy were seen together smurfing in a manner that is rather unsmurfy for Smurfs of the same gender, Empath," Papa Smurf said. "I don't know what's smurfing on, but it seems like somebody or something may be attacking us."
"And this smurf is sensing that the same thing must have happened to Snappy and Slouchy as well," Empath said.
"This one is curious as to what the purpose is for this strange change in behavior if indeed this is some sort of attack upon us," Polaris said.
"This wouldn't be something that Cupid would smurf, if I know how cherubs generally act," Papa Smurf said. "Right now all I can suggest is that the two of you be on the smurfout for something that may be smurfing in our village that doesn't belong here."
"That may be difficult for us to detect, Papa Smurf, if whatever's attacking us is a magical being like Cupid," Empath said.
"We'll do our best to find out who or what is responsible for these strange behavior changes, Papa Smurf," Polaris said.
"That's all I'm asking of you, Polaris," Papa Smurf said. "I don't like the thought that there may be some kind of rogue cherub smurfing these unsmurfy feelings among my little Smurfs."
"We'll put a stop to these attacks one way or another, Papa Smurf," Empath said before he and Polaris left.
After their departure, there was a knock on the door. Papa Smurf answered it and saw who it was. "Smurfette! What may I smurf you for?" he asked politely.
"I think there's something weird smurfing on in the village, Papa Smurf," Smurfette said. "I was just outside Handy's workshop where I saw him smurfing with Carpenter in a way that made me feel very unsmurfy."
"I see," Papa Smurf said. "Nat and Sassette just reported something like that happening with Hefty and Tuffy."
"Oh dear, do you think somebody's trying to make us smurf things that we wouldn't normally smurf, Papa Smurf?" Smurfette asked.
"I already have Empath and Polaris investigating the matter, Smurfette, so don't you worry," Papa Smurf said.
"Oh, thank you, Papa Smurf," Smurfette said, sounding a bit relieved. "I'd hate to think of what would happen if the entire village started smurfing this way to each other."
"I'm sure that it's just nothing but a bit of harmless experimentation at the very least, Smurfette," Papa Smurf said. "All your fellow Smurfs will still love you, and I'm sure you'll be married to one of them someday."
Smurfette giggled. "I already know which Smurf it will be, Papa Smurf. I'm just waiting for him to ask the question."

As time passed, more and more of the male Smurfs were being hit by heart-tipped arrows and were starting to kiss male Smurfs that they felt attracted to at the moment they were hit. Greedy and Culinary were both kissing each other, as were Narrator and Poet, Painter and Scribbler, Sculptor and Potter, Jokey and Presto, and many others. Even Grouchy, who would normally not be affected by a love arrow, found himself enamored with Amore of all Smurfs.
Tapper was in his tavern doing his cleaning when his friend Duncan McSmurf entered. "Greetings, my fellow Duncan. What smurfs to be on your mind today?" he asked.
"Laddie, there's something unsmurfy going on in the village today," Duncan said. "On my way here, I thought I saw Hefty and Tuffy smurfing with each other like they were Smurf and Smurfette."
"Like Smurf and Smurfette?" Tapper said, sounding curious. "Are you certain of that?"
"Of course I am, Tapper," Duncan said. "You think that I'd be smurfing this all up just to smurf your attention? And I think that I was hearing the same thing smurfing from Handy's workshop, not to mention a few other places."
"Hmmm...most strange that this is happening," Tapper said as he rubbed his chin while pondering. "I could say that there's a demon at work here, but I can't sense in my spirit just what it is that's smurfing on."
"I'd be thinking that that angel Cupid has smurfed rogue on us or something if this is what he's smurfing with his love arrows," Duncan said.
"I can't imagine this ever being the work of Cupid, my fellow Duncan, but it is worth smurfing into nonetheless," Tapper said as he folded up his cleaning towel. "Come, we will smurf to the bottom of this together."
"Aye, laddie," Duncan said as they both stepped out the door together. However, the instant that they did, Duncan was struck with a heart-tipped arrow, and began showing the same symptoms as the others.
Tapper noticed that his friend was looking at him rather strangely. "Duncan, what's the matter with you?"
"Oh, nothing's the matter with me, laddie," Duncan said. "I'm just coming to realize how much of my true feelings for you I've been smurfing back...but no more. You've been more than a brother to me."
Tapper didn't like how his friend was trying to embrace him. "Duncan, please smurf to your senses right this instant!" he said sternly. "Whatever you're feeling right now for me isn't real!"
"Oh, it's very much real...you just don't know it yet," Duncan said as he tried to give his friend a kiss.
Tapper turned his head to avoid the kiss on his lips. Then suddenly he felt as if something tried to attack him, but it was instantly stopped by some kind of force field. He turned and saw who it was that was trying to attack him. "It's a cherub!" he cried out.
Eros was hovering over the village when he realized one of his arrows didn't work. "Curses!" he growled. "He must have some sort of spiritual protection over him."
"I should have known that there was a rogue cherub smurfing about among us," Tapper said as he struggled to break free of Duncan's embrace. "I must smurf this to Papa Smurf as soon as I can." He soon broke free and made a run for it.
"Tapper, laddie, come back!" Duncan called out as he chased after his friend, still smitten by the effects of Eros' lust arrow.
-----
Empath and Polaris were still walking around the village together, hoping to find any sign of what was causing the strange behaviors among their fellow Smurfs. Along the way they noticed various male Smurfs engaging in affections that made the both of them feel uncomfortable. "Do you sense anything, Polaris?" Empath asked.
"This one doesn't sense anything, Empath," Polaris replied. "Whatever is responsible for these attacks must also be effective in keeping itself from being detected by this one's mental scans."
"Then most likely we're dealing with a magical being," Empath guessed. "We'll have to just use our eyes and ears to look for anything or anyone that seems out of place."
"Could this be just a random manifestation of savage behaviors that are inherent in your people, Empath?" Polaris asked, trying hard to mask the disgust in his voice.
"This smurf knows the Smurfs too well to see how they would just behave in a contrary manner out of the blue, Polaris," Empath answered. "Hefty is too much into proving how masculine he really is to ever find himself desiring a romantic relationship with anyone other than a Smurfette."
"His desire to prove his masculinity has been the source of various types of problems among your fellow Smurfs, as this one is fully aware of," Polaris commented.
"This smurf understands that, Polaris, but it has also been his greatest source of personal strength," Empath said. "And frankly, this smurf wouldn't have him be any other way."
Then the two of them saw Tapper running straight towards them. "Empath! Polaris! Thank the Almighty that I've been able to reach you!" he said, sounding grateful.
"This smurf senses that you know something about what's been attacking us, Tapper," Empath said.
"Indeed, Empath...it's a cherub, and one that smurfs like he came straight from Hades," Tapper said excitedly. "He's been smurfing flaming arrows upon us, and one of them had smurfed my friend Duncan."
"Great Ancestors," Empath exclaimed. "I'd hate to be in your position right now, having Duncan chasing after you."
"Where have you detected this cherub, Tapper?" Polaris asked.
"He was over my tavern the minute that Duncan and I were attacked, my fellow Polaris, but fortunately the arrow didn't smurf me at all," Tapper said.
"It's a good thing that this Almighty of yours is your protective shield, or else you wouldn't be here telling this smurf the news," Empath said.
"Empath, Duncan is coming this way," Polaris said, directing his friend's attention to someone approaching.
Empath saw that Duncan looked really crazed, as if he couldn't wait to get his hands on Tapper and start smooching him. "This smurf apologizes, Duncan," Empath said, and then instantly Duncan was knocked down unconscious with a sudden burst of telekinetic energy.
"Poor Duncan," Tapper said as he looked at his fallen friend. "I'll try to find a way to smurf you back to normal, I promise."
Then suddenly Empath and Polaris were both struck by the lust arrows. Tapper began to notice that they were looking at each other as if they suddenly found their partner quite attractive.
"Empath, Polaris...no, don't smurf this!" Tapper cried out.
Then suddenly the two of them began to kiss each other very passionately, to the point where it made Tapper's stomach turn.
"I'd better get myself to Papa Smurf soon...he's the only one who can smurf us now," Tapper said as he quickly headed in the direction of Papa Smurf's laboratory.
-----
Eros was hovering over the village, laughing at all the mayhem he was causing with his lust arrows. "Burn, burn, burn, you lovesick Smurfs...let your hearts burn with overwhelming lust!" Eros said with a sinister laugh.
Then suddenly another arrow came whizzing by, just barely missing Eros. "You foul pervert! How dare you spread lust among these noble beings!"
Eros turned and saw who it was that fired the arrow. "Cupid! I should have known you would come to the rescue of your precious friends!" he said. "These creatures are mine to do with as I please!"
"You'll regret the day that you turned against your fellow cherubs, Eros!" Cupid stated boldly.
"Wrong...it is you who will regret the day that you and your fellow cherubs rejected me!" Eros said, now aiming a lust arrow straight at Cupid.
Cupid tried to flee, but Eros fired the arrow and pierced Cupid with it before he could get far. Cupid cried out in pain as he fell to the ground, right next to a Smurf house.
Vanity was busy looking at himself in his mirror privately when Cupid landed close to him, wounded by the lust arrow. "Please...help...me...," Cupid moaned before he passed out.
Vanity looked and saw that Eros was high up in the sky, laughing at the fallen Cupid. "Soon I will have the entire village under the thrall of my lust arrows, and then nobody will fall in love with anyone...all they will have is just lust burning in their hearts forever!" he said maliciously.
"Heavens to Smurfatroid," Vanity cried out. "I need to get help for Cupid, or else it will be all over for us!"
-----
Papa Smurf was in his laboratory when he heard Tapper crying out, "Papa Smurf! Papa Smurf!"
He opened the door and saw that Tapper looked like he witnessed something terrible. "What's smurfing on, Tapper?" he asked.
"Papa Smurf, we're being attacked by a cherub," Tapper answered. "He's smurfing right over us at this minute smurfing flaming arrows at us."
"Flaming arrows?" Papa Smurf said before he realized what they were. "Great Smurfness, those must be lust arrows, a deadly weapon in the hands of a cherub."
"Duncan's been attacked by one of those arrows, and now so were Empath and Polaris," Tapper reported. "I was fortunate that the Almighty has protected me from its effects."
"Papa Smurf! Papa Smurf!" another voice cried out. He saw that it was now Smurfette calling for him. "More of the other Smurfs are starting to act really unsmurfy. I don't know what's happening to them."
"This is all the work of a lust arrow, Smurfette, which a cherub has been smurfing at us right now," Papa Smurf said.
"Why would a cherub smurf a lust arrow at us, Papa Smurf?" Smurfette asked.
"I don't know, but one way or another, we're going to smurf a stop to this attack at once," Papa Smurf said as he, Tapper, and Smurfette headed straight out the door.
Eros appeared right overhead above Papa Smurf's laboratory, looking down at the three. "So you're the leader of these cheerful little Smurfs who all had love in their hearts for that precious Smurfette of yours?" the cherub said. "Well, get ready to feel the burning effects of my lust arrow, which will pierce your heart and make you burn with nothing but lust!"
"Quick, get down!" Tapper said. Smurfette ducked for cover, while Papa Smurf was hit with the lust arrow, feeling a strange sensation that made him desire someone.
Smurfette looked and saw that Papa Smurf was looking at her rather strangely, as if he wanted to do something very unsmurfy with her. "No, please, Papa Smurf," Smurfette begged.
Then Eros found a volley of arrows being fired at him, each of them barely missing him. "You leave these Smurfs alone, you fiend!" a female voice cried out. Tapper and Smurfette saw that a female cherub appeared in the sky, ready to deal with Eros.
Eros growled in frustration. "You cursed little fool! I'll deal with you and the Smurfs later!" He then suddenly disappeared in a dark poof of smoke.
The female cherub then turned and saw Papa Smurf advancing on Smurfette. "Looks like he needs to have a dose of real love," she said as she fired a love arrow straight at Papa Smurf.
Papa Smurf suddenly felt the effects of the love arrow piercing him. "Are you all right, Smurfette?" he asked as he reached out his hand to help pick her back up.
"I think so, Papa Smurf," Smurfette answered. "That female cherub just saved us."
"My name is Charity, and I am happy to help you," the cherub introduced herself as soon as she landed. "I was warned that Eros would be on the loose, and I hoped to be here before he caused any real damage."
"We are grateful that you are here to assist us, my fellow Charity," Tapper said. "We need to restore the natural love of our fellow Smurfs before..."
"Papa Smurf! Papa Smurf! Cupid needs our help!" Vanity called out as he approached.
Charity gasped. "My father! What happened to him?"
"He was attacked by one of those flaming arrows that the cherub was smurfing at us," Vanity answered.
"Great Smurfness!" Papa Smurf exclaimed as he, Tapper, Smurfette, and Charity followed Vanity to where he had found Cupid. He was still lying on the ground, motionless.
Charity found herself in tears. "Oh, Father, please don't pass away into the great unknown," she sobbed.
Papa Smurf put his ear on Cupid's chest to hear for any signs of a heartbeat. "This is a magical arrow that's pierced his heart, Charity. I'm afraid that he doesn't have much long to live."
"There's got to be something that we can smurf to save him, isn't there?" Smurfette asked.
"I'll smurf through my magic books to see if there's a way that we can resuscitate a cherub that's been smurfed with a magic arrow, Smurfette," Papa Smurf said. "Right now, we need to smurf him as comfortable as we can until we can smurf the answers."
"Aye, Papa Smurf, if that will help our winged friend," Tapper said.
-----
Meanwhile, Clumsy was still by himself, trying to practice on what he would said to his friend Brainy about what he felt for him. "Uh, hi, Brainy. Remember what I smurfed to you one time that I loved you? Well, I really mean this time in a way that I never smurfed to you before. I...no, no, no, that's not it. Uh, hi, Brainy. I just want to let know how much I love you, and that's not just as a friend. It's more like...uh, more like...uh...no, no, no." He soon became frustrated with himself that he couldn't find the right words to say. "Gee, what am I going to say to Brainy? I don't want him to feel uncomfortable with me, but I've got to smurf him the truth somehow."
He then saw a group of Smurfs had gathered around Cupid, who had fallen to the ground and had an arrow pierced through him. They looked pretty grim, as if they didn't know what was going to happen to him.
He soon spotted Brainy among the crowd of Smurfs. "Uh, hi, Brainy. What's smurfing on here?" he asked.
"Haven't you heard? We've been attacked by a rogue cherub, and now Cupid has been smurfed by one of his arrows," Brainy answered. "Papa Smurf's looking into his books right now to see if there's a way to cure him."
"Golly, that smurfs really serious," Clumsy said, realizing how grave the situation was.
"Well, I am very confident in that Papa Smurf will find the answer, and then we will have nothing to worry about except for that rogue cherub, which I'm sure Empath is capable of taking care of," Brainy said. "By the way, you smurf as if you have something you wanted to tell me. I could help you if you let me know what it is."
"It's...uh, it's...it's nothing, Brainy," Clumsy said, sounding very uneasy.
"Clumsy, you've got to let me know sooner or later," Brainy said. "I can't keep smurfing a relationship with you if we're not able to smurf our deepest and most intimate secrets with each other, even if it's something I may not want to hear from you."
Clumsy sighed. "I'll let you know as soon as I can, Brainy, I promise."

With the Smurfs cured of the effects from the lust arrows, they all gathered around Cupid as they kept him company while Papa Smurf went to do research on how to cure a cherub. They all felt sympathy for his daughter Charity, whom they had just met but felt that they could completely trust her if worse came to worst and she had to take his place.
"I just wanted to be an active cherub like my father, whose favorite thing in the world is to spread joy and love among all creatures," Charity said to Tapper. "I never wanted something like this to happen to him."
"Sometimes things like this happen in order to prepare us for difficult roles that we have to smurf in life, my dear Charity," Tapper said. "We were just young Smurflings when our parents were smurfed away from us, and a good deal of us didn't know how to run a village. But Papa Smurf was there to help guide us and nurture us and make us into the Smurfs that we are today, and for that I am forever grateful."
"You are unique among your brethren in that you are so wise, my young friend," Charity said. "You must feel honored to have them come to you whenever they need to know something that they are unable to ask your Papa Smurf about."
"I feel more humbled than honored, because most of what I have smurfed in life comes from years of being intimate with the one true God who has created all of us," Tapper said. "Even now I admit that my wisdom and knowledge pales in comparison to that of the Ancient Of Days Himself."
"I only hope that your God is able to bring my father back from the dead, or whatever death is for cherubs, Tapper," Charity said with a heavy sigh.
"Empath, we can smurf Cupid back to life with your mindlink, can't we?" Sassette asked, sounding tearful.
"This smurf fears this is one instance where the mindlink may not help our friend, Sassette," Empath replied. "From what this smurf is able to sense, the magic of the lust arrow acts as a slow poison in a cherub, and it seems that it is just too powerful to simply remove with a mindlink."
"But I don't want him to die!" Sassette cried out. "There's just so much love that this world needs from him!"
"This smurf agrees with you, Sassette, but this may be the time for Cupid to pass on from this world and for his daughter to take his place," Empath said comfortingly.
"I hate having to lose Cupid," Grouchy said as he stood next to Duncan.
"Aye, he's been such a valuable friend to the Smurfs, I don't see how we can smurf on without him, Grouchy," Duncan said.
"I just hope Papa Smurf can find the cure to his condition and soon," Vanity said.
Finally Papa Smurf came out of his laboratory. "I have some good news, my little Smurfs...there is a way that we can fully restore Cupid, but it's going to take some brave souls to smurf this task."
"This smurf is willing to undertake the journey, Papa Smurf, wherever it may lead," Empath said.
"And this one is willing to accompany Empath," Polaris said.
"Please, Papa Smurf, I want to help rescue my father," Charity said.
"Very well," Papa Smurf said. "The place you will need to smurf to is the Wellspring Of Hope, a legendary location where it is always spring. It has a special type of healing water that is able to cure cherubs, but in order to bring it back here, you're going to need this."
Empath saw as Papa Smurf gave him an emerald ring. "What is it, Papa Smurf?" he asked.
"It is a special ring that has been smurfed to me by the Emerald Empress, which is used to create containment bubbles," Papa Smurf answered. "You may need it in case you smurf into Eros again."
"Papa Smurf, I wish to join the group in traveling to the Wellspring Of Hope," Tapper requested. "Eros' arrows are unable to affect me."
"Very well, then, you may go," Papa Smurf said. "But you must return here with the water before sundown, or we may never see Cupid alive again."
"This smurf knows the location of the Wellspring Of Hope from Papa Smurf's memories," Empath said as he slipped the emerald ring on his finger. "It's time that we got ourselves going."
"Good luck, my little Smurfs," Papa Smurf said as he watched the four of them head off into the sky together.
"Oooh, I wish that I was going with them, Duncan," Smurfette said.
"They'll be fine, lassie," Duncan said. "We just need to smurf them time to reach their destination and smurf what they came for."
"I hate waiting for them to return," Grouchy said.
Duncan noticed that Clumsy was walking away from the crowd, looking as if his mind was focused on something else entirely. He felt as if his friend could use a bit of company right around that time.
"Laddie, are you all right?" Duncan asked as he came over to Clumsy. "I can understand that this is upsmurfing, but Empath, Polaris, and Tapper are going to help the poor cherub and hopefully smurf him back to life."
"It's not that, Duncan," Clumsy replied. "It's...something that I don't feel comfortable telling any Smurf except my closest friends. I'm not sure I can even tell Tapper because I know what he's going to smurf about it."
"I know that you're a close friend of Brainy," Duncan said. "I can see that you care for him just as much as you care for Smurfette. In fact, you smurf like you feel something more for him than you think is appropriate."
"Yes, but how do you know?" Clumsy asked. "You don't have that minds-eye like Empath has or..."
"It's just a gut feeling that I smurf about you, Clumsy," Duncan said. "You're probably thinking that you feel less of a Smurf for feeling the way that you do for your friend. I surely don't envy you for the burden that you carry."
"I feel so ashamed, Duncan, like every Smurf is going to make fun of me for admitting it," Clumsy said. "Even the Smurfs that I smurf up to like you and Hefty...they're going to think that I'm so unsmurfy."
"What I feel about how you feel for Brainy is something I have to smurf with," Duncan said. "But what's more important to me is letting you smurf your life however you want, like Vanity and Century. If they're comfortable with who they wish to smurf their love with, then why should my opinion matter to them?"
"You think that I should let Brainy know how I really feel for him, Duncan?" Clumsy asked.
"You should only tell him when you're good and ready, laddie," Duncan said. "But no matter what happens, I'm always going to be a friend to you."
-----
Empath led the way as Polaris telekinetically transported Tapper and Charity flew besides them. Polaris sensed that Empath felt somewhat uncomfortable about what happened to the both of them when they were under the influence of the lust arrow. He could understand that feeling for himself, as the whole thing seemed like a violation of their very being. He hoped that they could come to a mutual understanding so that it would not affect the future of their relationship with each other.
Then Empath said, "There it is!" The four of them saw a place that looked like it was always spring, with a beautiful garden surrounding a bubbling fountain in the center.
"It's so beautiful, just like the Garden of Eden," Tapper said.
"This place is truly remarkable, if it does have miraculous recuperative abilities that are described in Papa Smurf's books," Polaris said.
"We might as well get what we came for and return quickly," Empath said.
"At least there's nobody here that can stop us now," Charity said.
"Guess again," another voice broke in. They saw Eros reappear right above the fountain itself, laughing maliciously. "Take one more step and I'll poison this water so that nobody will be able to use it for anything," he said, aiming one of his lust arrows at the center of the fountain itself.
"Why do you want to fill the entire world with lust, Eros?" Charity asked. "Have we cherubs ever did anything wrong to you?"
"All you cherubs ever care about is love, love, love," Eros answered in a mocking tone. "And frankly, what you call love just makes me sick. You don't care that some folks just don't share the same kind of love that you do. Instead, you just want to make the world into the kind of love where nobody has any freedom to love whoever they please."
"What you're spreading in the world isn't true love, Eros," Empath said. "It's only the burning sensation of lust that harms people, including those that feel it."
"So what if it does? Nobody lives forever, you know," Eros said. "I might as well give the world what it truly wants, which is to let people have their own way with others, even if it doesn't fit your definition of love."
"We are not going to let you alter people's feelings just to satisfy your savage desires, Eros," Polaris said.
"And how are you going to stop me, huh?" Eros said. "None of you except that meddlesome green-vested Smurf has the power to withstand my lust arrows. If one cherub has to fall to its power, then what could another cherub possibly do against me?"
"I do not want to hurt you, Eros," Charity said. "I would rather see you restored to the cherub you once were before you decided to become evil. Surely that good part of you hasn't been fully driven out."
"That part of me is no more, dearie," Eros said. "I would rather be slain than have anyone attempt to make me into something I no longer want to be. In fact, I wouldn't mind having a partner to tag along with me and reshape the world into the image of love I would want it to have. Come, throw away everything that the elder cherubs have taught you and join me as we give the world what it truly wants."
"Oh, Lord, please protect the young cherub from this wicked one's temptations," Tapper prayed.
Charity looked at Eros for a moment as if to consider his offer. Then she just said, "No, I won't. You're going to have to kill every cherub if you want a world full of lust." She lowered her bow as if she was going to surrender.
"No, Charity, please don't do it," Empath pleaded as he, Polaris, and Tapper watched.
"If that's what you want, young one, then that's what you'll get," Eros said as he pulled back his bowstring and let fly a lust arrow aimed straight at her.
Empath tried to fly straight into the arrow's path to intercept it, but it reached its target before he could get there...only for the arrow to have no effect as it struck the female cherub.
"What?!?" Eros said, surprised by what he saw. "That isn't possible!"
"With the Almighty, all things are possible," Tapper said. "She and all my friends here are protected by Him, so that none of your lust arrows can smurf anything to us."
"Curses," Eros growled. "If I can't affect you with my arrows, then I have no choice but to poison the well."
"Eros, dont!" Charity cried out.
But Eros had already fired a lust arrow straight into the center of the fountain. The fountain briefly glowed dark for a moment, and then it turned bright with a blinding light before its water became clear again.
Eros was upset that his attempt to poison the well didn't work. "What...?!? No...it can't be...!"
"Apparently the fountain must be self-purifying to the point that it cannot be contaminated with anything evil," Polaris observed.
"Empath, Charity, he's smurfing away," Tapper said as he watched Eros fly off in a rage.
"We won't let him get away," Charity said as she and Empath flew off after him, with Charity firing her love arrows and Empath emitting green bubbles with his emerald ring. Eros evaded them for as long as he could, but eventually one of Charity's arrows struck him. He started to fall to the ground until Empath encased him in a green bubble.
"You didn't have to smurf that to him, Charity," Empath said, sounding upset at what happened.
"Don't worry, my friend," Charity said. "Love arrows can only stun, not kill. He will awaken and return to his wicked ways, but for now he will not bring harm to anyone else."
The two of them returned to the fountain with Eros, while Tapper and Polaris waited for them. "Now that Eros has been taken care of, it's time that we got what we came for," Polaris said.
"With this ring, Polaris, it won't be a problem," Empath said. He soon projected a bubble into the middle of the fountain and scooped up a good amount of its healing water inside.
"It's too bad that we can't smurf in a world like this forever, my friends...not until the Lord Himself comes and resmurfs the world into a paradise," Tapper said.
"This smurf is certain that every Smurf would want to live in this type of world forever, Tapper," Empath said. "Come...it is time that we return to our village."
"Hopefully we will arrive in time to save my father," Charity said as the four of them flew off with two green bubbles in tow.
-----
As the Smurfs continued their watch over Cupid's condition, the Smurflings noticed something. "Soaring seagulls, Pappy, the sun is going down," Sassette said, looking up at the sky.
"And the four of them haven't yet returned with the healing water," Nat said.
"Oh, Papa Smurf, what are we going to do?" Smurfette asked, finding herself ready to break into tears.
"There, there, Smurfette," Papa Smurf said comfortingly. "I know it's going to be difficult if this is going to be the last Valentine's Day that Cupid will ever smurf."
"I feel so sad that it makes me want to smurf a funeral dirge for our friend," Harmony said, ready to put his trumpet to his lips and start playing.
"Don't smurf the music yet, Harmony...look!" Slouchy said, as he noticed something else.
"It's Empath, Polaris, and Tapper with Charity," Snappy said, recognizing who it was that was approaching.
The Smurfs made room for the four travelers to land. "We've got the healing water for Cupid, and we also have Eros in confinement, Papa Smurf," Polaris reported.
"Now how do we open the bubble that contains the water?" Empath asked.
"All you have to smurf is just focus with your mind, Empath," Papa Smurf answered.
Empath then directed the water bubble to appear over Cupid's head and then released the water that was inside it, dousing the cherub. As the Smurfs watched, Cupid began to open his eyes. "Wha...what happened to me?" he asked.
"You were smurfed with a lust arrow and were near death, my friend," Papa Smurf explained. "Your daughter helped to smurf back the water you need to smurf back to life."
"You did that, Charity?" Cupid asked. "Then where is Eros?"
"He's safe inside a containment bubble for now, Cupid," Empath answered. "This smurf is not sure what to do with him, but as long as he's unconscious he won't pose anymore of a threat."
"I had to stun him with a love arrow, Father," Charity explained. "He tried to tempt me into joining him, but I didn't want to have any part of his plans."
"I know that you're strong enough to resist such temptations, my child," Cupid said as he got up and embraced her. "Today you have proven yourself to be worthy of your calling as a true cherub."
"I love you, Father," Charity said tearfully, as the other Smurfs cheered.
"Oh, this is just so touching, I can't control myself," Weepy said as he cried tears of joy.
"You smurfed it, Weepy," Vanity said, finding himself in tears. "What a smurfy way to close out the day...other than the Valentine's Day dance tonight."
"I think it is time that we return to the Land Of Myth with our captive, my friends," Cupid said. "It has certainly been a Valentine's Day to remember."
"Of course, Cupid," Papa Smurf said, understanding. "Empath, you should smurf the ring to his daughter."
"But Papa Smurf, the ring is too small to fit her finger," Empath said. "How will she wear it?"
"The Emerald Empress said that the ring will change size depending on who wears it," Papa Smurf explained.
Empath nodded as he gave the ring over to Charity, which then grew to the size of her fingers. "What will you do with Eros once you return to your world, Charity?" Empath asked.
"We cherubs believe in restoration, no matter how long it takes," Charity answered. "Someday Eros will realize for himself that spreading lust in the world is wrong and he will return to the good cherub that he once was."
"But he will do everything to resist that change," Polaris said. "That may end up proving itself a fruitless endeavor."
"I believe that only something greater than myself has the right to choose when a life should end, Polaris," Charity said. "In the meantime, I will do everything I can do to fulfill my calling in life to spread love, joy, and compassion among all creatures."
"This one is certain that you will achieve that purpose," Empath said.
"May the spirits of the Great Ancestors guide and protect you," Polaris said.
All the Smurfs watched and waved goodbye to the cherubs as they headed off into the sky with Eros and then suddenly vanished. "I hate it when they just suddenly disappear," Grouchy said.
"So, my little Smurfs, it is now time that we celebrate Valentine's Day with our dance," Papa Smurf announced.
"Oh, goody," Vanity said, sounding very excited. "I've got to smurf home right now and get myself prepared."
"Me too," Century said. "Smurfette's going to like the suit that I'll be wearing."
Smurfette turned to see Empath approaching. "Oh, Empath," she said, giving him a warm embrace. "I'm so glad that you smurfed home with Tapper and Polaris. I feared that you were going to be smurfed by those lust arrows again."
"Tapper provided us with all the protection we needed, thanks to his faith in his Almighty, Smurfette," Empath said.
"So I see," Smurfette said. "But can you really prove to me that you're no longer affected by it?"
"How about this?" Empath asked, as he gave her a kiss on the lips.
Smurfette giggled after the kiss ended. "That's all the proof I will ever need."
Clumsy then came over to Brainy. "Uh, Brainy, there's something that I need to smurf with you in private," he said rather quietly.
Brainy noticed the look in his friend's eyes that this was something very important. "Oh, very well, Clumsy," he said as the two of them walked off together.
Tapper was with Duncan as he noticed Clumsy and Brainy walking off together. "I sense in my spirit that Clumsy has an important secret that he needs to smurf with his closest friend, and it may not be something that he wants to smurf with anyone else," Tapper said.
"I tried to comfort the laddie and let him know how I feel about this secret he's smurfing," Duncan said.
"You did only what a friend could smurf, my fellow Duncan," Tapper said. "I pray that the Almighty's hand will be upon him to smurf him on the path that he should follow for the sake of his soul."
"I just want you to know, if it hasn't been smurfed before, that I love you as a brother, Tapper," Duncan said, giving his friend a hug.
"I know just how you feel, for that's also how I love you," Tapper said.

Empath's personal journal, supplemental.
The incident regarding Eros the rogue cherub inflaming the Smurfs' hearts with lust arrows is over, and Cupid and his daughter Charity are both bringing him back to the Land Of Myth in the hopes of restoring him, although how successful their efforts will be is unknown. Charity will follow in her father's footsteps and become just as much a good cherub as Cupid, spreading love, joy, and compassion to all creatures, including Smurfs. However, there are still some lingering effects from the lust arrows, such as the shame that this smurf's fellow Smurfs are now feeling because of how they were acting toward each other. Hopefully their continued friendships will be strong enough to overcome the passing feelings of passion that they have felt.
-----
It was now the night of the Valentine's Day dance, and Papa Smurf has allowed the Smurflings to stay up and enjoy the party while it lasted. Spinner was at the turntable playing all sorts of music for his fellow Smurfs to dance to. However, it was mostly Smurfette dancing with both Vanity and Century as they kept her company on the dance floor, enjoying the music that was being played. The other Smurfs were busy talking among themselves about what went on during the day and the shame they have felt for how they were feeling.
"Uh, Tuffy," Hefty said with some difficulty, "I just wanted to tell you how sorry I am. I was feeling so weird and unsmurfy when I was under the influence of the lust arrow, you know?"
"Hey, that's no problem with me, Hefty," Tuffy said. "I was feeling the same way myself. We're still buddies with each other, aren't we?"
"I didn't know what it was that smurfed over me, Carpenter," Handy said "I mean, the whole thing was really strange. I hope I didn't do anything unsmurfy to you."
"I can live with what smurfed on between us, which was nothing, Handy," Carpenter said. "I'm sure we'll find the right one to smurf in love with someday."
Brainy was with Clumsy, trying to come to terms with what his friend had confessed to him. "Oh, Clumsy, I'm so surprised to ever smurf this from you, even after all the years that we've known each other," Brainy said.
"Uh, does that mean that you love me the same way?" Clumsy asked.
"I will always love you, Clumsy, but only as a friend and nothing more," Brainy said. "Even if we were the last two Smurfs on the face of this earth, I would want you smurfing beside me."
"Oh, gosh, Brainy, I just don't know what to say," Clumsy said as he hugged Brainy so tight.
"That...pretty much...smurfs...enough...with me, Clumsy," Brainy struggled to say between breaths.
Empath was with Polaris, talking about how they were feeling under the influence of the lust arrows. "That was a rather unusual and intimate experience that we were sharing together, even if most of what we felt for each other wasn't real in that instance, Empath," Polaris commented.
"At least this one gets a sense of what the other Psyches were probably expressing with each other through their dream sharing, Polaris," Empath said.
"We will never know for sure, since Psyches tend to keep their dream sharing experiences rather guarded," Polaris said. "However, that still leaves the question of what direction our relationship will go in now that we have experienced a form of intimacy that was against everything designed in nature."
"As far as this smurf is concerned, we are still just friends and brothers," Empath said. "Nothing in the world, not even the two of us acting like animals in mating season, will ever change that."
"Considering your thoughts are still focused on Smurfette, this one will accept that as a satisfactory answer," Polaris said. "On another note, this one is wondering how Tapper is able to extend his spiritual protection onto us and Charity when we were confronting Eros."
"This smurf was sensing that he was praying for us, all the way to the Wellspring Of Hope," Empath responded. "From what this smurf can remember reading from his holy book, there's something in the book of Isaiah where God said to His people Israel that 'no weapon formed against you shall prosper.' There's also something from Paul the apostle about being armed with the shield of faith so that the believer can quench the fiery darts of the evil one."
"Interesting," Polaris said. "It appears that having Tapper along for spiritual protection against Eros was a brilliant strategy."
"Tapper's rather unusual in that he can survive things without a scratch, Polaris," Empath said. "This smurf would have to say that he is more 'the luckiest Smurf' than this smurf is."
"Empath, come on out here," Smurfette called. "I need to have you smurfing here on the dance floor."
Polaris understood that it was time for Empath to have some time with Smurfette. "This one will talk to you later about the events of the day," he said as he watched Empath join her on the dance floor.
Hefty watched as Smurfette was now having fun with Empath and decided that it wasn't fun for him just watching her. He went out on the dance floor and joined the other Smurfs who were already dancing. Smurfette didn't seem to mind it one bit.
"Ah, what are we doing, wasting this party smurfing to ourselves?" Handy said, realizing the same thing for himself. "We might as well enjoy it while it lasts."
"Oui, mademoiselle, let me dance with you," Painter said, as he, Poet, Sculptor, and Scribbler joined in as well.
"I hate just smurfing here by myself," Grouchy said as he headed to the dance floor.
"Say, Greedy, are you going to come smurf with us?" Clumsy asked as he and Brainy were also going to dance with Smurfette.
"I'll wait my turn...I've already smurfed myself a date," Greedy said as he was busy eating a cake.
"Pappy Smurf, are you going to come dance with me?" Sassette asked as Papa Smurf was standing to the sides, holding Baby Smurf in his arms.
"Why don't you ask your fellow Smurflings if they would like to join you?" Papa Smurf replied. "They don't seem to be smurfing much fun right now."
"Okay, Pappy." Sassette then turned to Nat and asked, "Would you like to smurf a dance with me tonight?"
"Gee, I would love to, Sassy," Nat answered, "but I don't think the other two would like it if we were the only ones smurfing together."
"Me, want to smurf a dance with her?" Snappy said. "Naaah, I'm fine with myself right here."
"Yeah, me too," Slouchy said. "Of course, if Snappy wants to smurf some time alone with me..."
"Smurf time alone with you?" Snappy said, sounding like the thought repulsed him. "Phooey, I'd rather be smurfing with Sassette if she were the last Smurfling on the face of the earth."
Slouchy snickered. "I'd thought that would be what you'd smurf."
Papa Smurf watched as most of his little Smurfs filled the dance floor and enjoyed themselves regardless of what anybody else thought that night. "Well, Baby Smurf, it smurfs like it's going to be a very smurfy Valentine's Day after all."
"I love you, Papa," Baby Smurf said as he gave Papa Smurf a kiss on the cheek.
