Aloha, Smurfs and Smurf fans! I've been going through my sketchbook of Smurf story ideas and have been filling out the details of one called "Make It So, Number Two", which was originally posted on my DeviantArt page.
To summarize, Smurfette is privately told by Papa Smurf that she really is the second-ranking Smurf in the village, just below Papa himself, because of her leadership skills, calmness under pressure, and being an overall good worker in his lab whereas co-worker Brainy is just a useless, talkative nag. He never wanted to make a big announcement of it since Smurfette is modest and prefers to work behind the scenes, but the revelation shocks her to the smurf and causes her to lose concentration on her usual smurfy work.
Smurfette is suddenly made the leader of Smurf Village when Papa is smurfnapped by a red-tailed hawk while bird watching in the forest. She immediately and instinctively goes into leadership mode when she quickly organizes a search party to ultimately rescue Papa and safely return him home. Only after it's all done and smurfed that Smurfette realizes she is worthy of her role as the second-in-command; she just requests that nobody brag on her about it, "and that is a direct order!"
Here are some details I added to the story:
- When dusting the bookshelves, Smurfette is harrassed (as usual) by Brainy about the importance of her #2 role ("As Papa Smurf always says...")
She finds a bottle on the shelf labeled "Invisible Ink Mix". She gives a sly grin at Brainy, who later wonders where she went. He notices the open bottle, gasps "Whuh-oh". Smurfette's voice yells "Whuh-oh is right!" then proceeds to invisibly slap his face and yank his tail like a pinball machine plunger. Papa restores Smurfette with a bottle labeled "Invisible Ink Eraser". ![[Wink]](wink.gif) - When organizing the search party, the Sony Smurfs make cameo appearances: Smurfette tells Social Smurf to smurf out a text to everysmurf that Papa was smurfnapped and she needs volunteers for a search party. Volunteers show up with their handy smurfphones. Crazy Smurf joins Harmony in sounding the alarm, picking up from him when the trumpet stops up. Vexy teams up with Wild Smurf to search for Papa from above by swinging through the trees and looking from high branches.
- When Tracker loses Papa's scent on the ground, Wild sees Mount St. Smurf in the distance, a straight line of sight from where Papa's scent is lost. Vexy immediately deduces that the hawk took "Pops" to its nest on the volcanic mountain.
- Papa Smurf is not on the hawk's dinner menu. It turns out the hawk is a mother and she grabbed him because of his bright color and he would make a smurfy playmate for her baby hawklet son. When he is rescued, Papa is replaced with a stuffed plush Papa toy for the hawklet to enjoy and love. An in-joke reference to Schliech, the manufacturer of Smurf figurines, will be inserted there as the toy is made by Tailor Smurf following the Schliech stitching method.
Any thoughts?

Thanks, thatonesmurfx1031! Maybe that's why so many people like my Smurf fan art. To me it's just common sense to have all the classic and new Smurf characters together. I don't believe in keeping the so-called film, TV or gaming universes separated. All one has to do is see how many times the DC or Marvel universes have been rebooted in just the past few years on TV for different audiences to see the futility of such separation.
Since it's fanfic and fan comics, I just have a lot of fun having the Smurflings hang out with Vexy and Narrator, Harmony and Crazy teaming up on sounding the call, Laconia the deaf-mute wood elf teaching Narrator sign language, Panicky (nee Scaredy) shouting the sky is smurfing, and Hackus enjoying Greedy's (aka Baker's) yummy pies--pie plate and all. And I'm sure Sony is loving the free publicity.

i love that story idea! that's a lot of pressure on poor Smurfette, but you're right in saying that besides Papa Smurf she is the most qualified to lead the smurfs :-)i'll bet Brainy isn't too happy with Papa's choice originally :-D and it sounds like you've packed it full of epic fun and adventure too :-D
Squeaky, that picture is absosmurfly precious!!!

Squeaky, thatonesmurfx and Amy Sue: Thanks for all your smurfy feedback. And thanks Squeaky for the cute drawing! Now I know how to draw a hawklet! As Katy Perry's Smurfette would say in the movies and in my fan art, it's "super-terrific smurfarific" to know I inspired that drawing!
I'm putting all your feedback into the story, which I started penciling an hour and a half ago. Brainy really has no problem with Smurfette being the second-in-command; he just wouldn't be Brainy if he didn't have somesmurf to nag within nagging distance or a safe distance to land when he inevitably gets the boot into the sky.
When Papa gently breaks the news to Smurfette she really is the #2 in the village, she goes into shock. She can't sleep that night and squeezes her pet mousie Little Squeaky so tight the poor rodent can't breathe and her eyes bug out like when Homer Simpson is choking Bart! The next day Papa apologizes that he put so much pressure on her and gives her the rest of the day off.
Vexy is confounded why Smurfette didn't believe she was the #2 when everysmurf else knew that as a matter of fact, then realizes her best friend is just naturally modest and trustworthy about her job--unlike Brainy--and that's what she likes about her.
I will upload the first few pages once they are inked in. Thanks!

A little update before I go to bed: my pencil's been on autopilot drawing out the story, which is about two-thirds done now. I now understand why it's considered epic and ambitious for a fan story.
I just sketched out the panel where Smurfette leads the search party to rescue Papa, and it's diverse. Tracker is smelling Papa's scent from the ground, with Gutsy, Hefty, Grandpa and Brainy behind. Grandpa is Smurfette's advisor. Vexy and Wild are together doing aerial recon by swinging and jumping through the trees. The TV, comic and film characters are all together out to save their beloved Papa. True blue fans are going to love it!
Meanwhile, the white baby hawk (chick) as drawn by Squeaky has been added to the story. The difference is that its face will be Peyo-ized, so to speak, along with that of its mommy.
I'm also keeping the storyline pretty tight; no long-winded, Brainy-type slow pacing. I've learned to keep it short and to the point. I don't want to be shouted down like our friend Narrator.
The first few pages may be inked and posted by week's end.

Another update: Okay, now the story's getting silly. Vexy takes off for the volcanic Mount St. Smurf, where Papa Smurf is perched with the mama hawk and her chick, by twirling a rope around her head like a lasso and flying toward the mountain like a helicopter.
Smurfette is so preoccupied with rescuing Papa and coordinating the rescue that she rebuffs Vexy's sincere compliment that she just became the first woman to ever lead the Smurfs. "Never mind that! We have to save Papa Smurf!" Only after the mission is successful and Papa is safely back home does the little lady finally stop, pause, and realize the historic nature of what she just did... then shrugs and says it's something anysmurf would have done, Smurf or Smurfette.
Oh. My. Smurfness. The girl is so humble and gracious. ![[Smile]](smile.gif)

that's exactly what she would say too :-D and for the record, i don't think it sounds silly at all. i think it sounds like an epic smurfs adventure!

Thanks for the feedback, Amy Sue! Allow me to clarify the "silly" statement. I mean silly as in the whimsical and humorous turns the story makes as it smurfs along, such as Vexy flying like a helicopter by twirling a rope over herself like a rotor blade, mad-dogging Mount St. Smurf as she flies toward it. She's a wild little tomboy and this is the first fan story where I finally have her go berserk like she's supposed to--save for the brown hair instead of black.
Another silly turn is when Mama Hawk is about to feed live worms to Papa Smurf in the nest, her attention is drawn to the approaching Vexy. The worm falls out of her beak, and Papa tosses it to the chick when Mama's not looking. (You don't see the chick actually eat the worm; don't want to scare the kindergartners reading it.)
One side story is that everysmurf in the village knows Smurfette is the Number Two except for Smurfette herself. "I just do what I always do as Papa Smurf's assistant. I don't understand why it's such a big deal!" Vexy kindly replies "Hmmph. That's what I like about ya, Smurfette. You're always humble and unselfish. You never brag about yersmurf." "Yeah, Vexy. Unlike SOME assistants I know!"
She earned the Number Two position just by being her sweet smurfy self and not by being a certain bossy, talkative know-it-all. I came up with the "second-in-command" running gag between Smurfette and Brainy from the Wikipedia article on the first film, where Smurfette was called just that. I ran with that idea and made it one of several running gags in my fan stories. But the smurfy thing is that Smurfette's #2 position is real.
