BLUE IN THE FACE: Crews inflate a face-down Papa Smurf on the Upper West Side Wednesday.
Macy’s could blow! Wind threat to balloons New York Post November 28, 2013 2 Hours Ago
Thanksgiving paradegoers should brace themselves for a bone-chilling, windswept route — and the possibility that the big balloons could be grounded for the first time since 1971. It will feel as if it’s in the teens as the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade snakes its way from the Upper West Side down to Herald Square, starting at 9 a.m. Forecasters warned the brave souls who line the route to throw on a few extra layers. “It’s going to be blustery,” said Tom Kines, a senior meteorologist at AccuWeather. “If you dress for it, you’ll be fine.”
Sustained winds could be as high as 20 mph, and wind gusts could reach 30 or 40 mph, which would be enough to keep Buzz Lightyear, Spider-Man, Pikachu and other beloved balloons on the ground. “I think they’re going to have a tough decision on their hands,” Kines said.
Balloons have been grounded only once in the parade’s 87-year history, when bad weather kept them from flying in 1971.
In 1997, a woman was left in a coma after winds drove the Cat in the Hat balloon into a street light, which fell and hit her in the head.
NYPD Chief of Patrol James Hall said it’s his call. “If there’s something I see that I don’t like, I can say lower the balloon,” he told reporters on Wednesday. “I can say remove the balloon. “[But from] the latest reports we’ve gotten from the National Weather Service, I think we’re going to be in good shape.”

Macy’s balloons take off!
Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade balloon fly at half normal height, spirits still soar! New York Post November 28, 2013 9:30am
Snoopy, Spider-Man, SpongeBob — you didn’t disappoint us!
The iconic big balloons of the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade are soaring between Midtown’s skyscrapers despite the blustery weather.
“We were worried! I didn’t want to come here for nothing,” said Nicole Koeppel, 37, a Long Island nurse who shivered at Sixth Avenue and 36th Street with her daughter, Amber, 9, and other family members. “I’m looking forward to Snoopy and SpongeBob!” the little girl exclaimed from under her big red puffy coat.
The New York Police Department had been poised to yank the parade’s 16 helium giants had sustained winds exceeded 23 mph and gusts topped 34 mph.
But while it does feel arctic to the brave families huddled along the parade route, the winds were still calm enough for an all-clear.
“I’m very excited, even if I’m freezing cold,” said Maryann Mccrumb, 50, who traveled all the way from Florida to watch the parade. “I’d be very disappointed without the balloons,” she added. “I wanted to see it all in action. That’s why I’m here.”
The parade started 9 a.m. at 77th Street, goes down Central Park West, then bustles over to Sixth Avenue, ending in front of Macy’s at 34th Street.
Balloons have only been grounded once in the parade’s 87-year history, when bad weather kept them from flying in 1971.
The city enacted strict rules after fierce winds in 1997 caused a Cat in the Hat balloon to topple a light pole and seriously injure a spectator.
