Hi everysmurf!
Our smurfy friend, Zackmak has some great questions about Peyo and Smurf Comics in general. Can anyone help out finding some answers? Thanks in advance!!! Please feel free to post any info you find!
**************************
Papercutz is publishing a number of book volumes with main stories, including some that include one-page gags and even some that have 2-4 panel comic strips (as if they were originally made to be put in newspapers).
My first question is in regards to some of the stories that were found in volumes were never in the original 16 albums by Peyo. They are:
The Smurfs and his Neighbors (from Papercutz Vol. 1) The Smurf Submarine (from vol. 7) The Smurf Vacation (from vol. 12) Gargamel and the Crocodile (from vol. 13) The Smurfs and the Little Ghosts (from vol. 15) The Smurfs and the Booglooboo (from vol. 15) The Ogre and the Smurfs (from FCBD 2013 issue) The Smurfs and the Little Ghosts - a different story from the one found in Vol. 15, even though they have the same title (Halloween 2 mini comic)
1a. If these were never produced in the original 16 Peyo albums, were they produced by his Studio after Peyo's death in 1992? In other words, they were NOT written by Peyo?
1b. If they WERE written by Peyo before his death, were they published in other books while he was alive? Or were they written by Peyo, but never published until AFTER his death by his Studio?
1c. Regardless the answer to the above 'B', which publications were the stories I listed above found in?
2a. Regarding the one-page gags, how many were made by Peyo, and how many by the Studio after his death? I counted 85 in the Spirou magazines that were published before his death based on this website
http://bdoubliees.com/journalspirou/series6/schtroumpfs.htm.
2b.The five Schtroumpferies volumes, which each have 44 one-page gags, were these all written by Peyo himself? The volumes were published after his 1992 death, so I don't know if they were his...just never published, or new Studio-written stuff. Or a combination of what was published in Spirou magazines/16 Albums, and new Studio stuff.
3a. Did everything in the 16 original albums first appear in the Spirou magazines? Based on the first few album's publication dates, it seems that was the case - in comparing the magazine publication dates that have the same story. But after the first few albums, it seems the publication date of the album and the magazine having the same story are the same. Did they run concurently, with first production in Spirou, slightly ahead of the album production?
4a. Am I right to assume that Peyo only wrote a little over 40 multi-page smurf stories, and they were all published in the 16 albums? If not, how many did he himself personally write?
4b. What other multi-page smurf stories did he write and where were they published? If they weren't published in the 16 albums, then I would assume the unpublished ones would all be in Spirou.
4c. Were there any English publications that covered the other multi-page smurf stories that were not in his 16 albums? Which ones?
5a. I understand he also wrote non-comic-panel stories, and there are quite a few of them (as seen under the 'book' section of BlueBuddies.com). Were these only for the North American market?
6a. Regarding the smurf 2-4 panel traditional comic strips, how many were there by Peyo before his death, and how many after? According to
http://publishing.schtroumpf.com/catalog/?cat=5
there were more than 675 of these strips, but it doesn't say if they were originally from Peyo.
6b. Where were most of these 2-4 panel strips published? Spirou? Newspapers? Were they exclusive to one publication?
6c. Was there ever a collection of these in one series of books? I know of the 120 Jokes and Surpises books. In one of your posts, you showed all 5 covers of them and did some English translations. That was great! Five X 120 jokes, only equals 600 strips...so the other 75+ strips were never collected, correct?
6d. Was there ever an English volume book set of these strips? I find them hilarious. I don't think Papercutz will be doing a book of them...though they did put a few of them in their 2011 Free Comic Book Day comic and a few in a couple of their Smurf book volumes.
7a. This one is a Marvel comic question. Who actually wrote 6 main stories in the three issues? I know it wasn't Peyo. I know the one-page gag pages were Peyo written and drawn...but slightly changed for NA publication and translation.
7b. Who illustrated the stories in the Marvel comic issues? I've heard it was Dan Decarlo, through a couple sites, but it was soooo hard finding that info, I'm having my doubts.
8a. And lastly, did Peyo do all his own writing and drawing for all his work? I know there are other people credited with Peyo for some stories (example: Gos and Delporte), but what was their role each time?
-------------------- Have a smurfy day!
