I'm at McDonald's where the in-house TV channel is promoting "The Wizard of Oz". A Google search of BlueBuddies shows there already are several ideas of a Smurfs version of the story, but here's my take.
My idea is a smurfy parody of the familiar 1939 film, with Sassette as Dorothy (retaining her pink overalls), Smurfette's second pet mouse (whom I call Little Squeaky) as Toto, Clumsy as the Scarecrow, Hefty as the Tin Man, Vexy as the Cowardly Lioness, Smurfette as Glinda the Smurfy Witch of the South (y'all), Hogatha as the Wicked Witch of the West, and Brainy as the Wizard--one who's bossy and with serious self-esteem issues. The Munchkins are actually the Smurflings multiplied. And instead of traveling to the Emerald City (green), Sassy and her friends trek to the Sapphire City (blue).
Brainy as the Wizard is exposed when Little Squeaky pulls away at the familiar curtain, causing Brainy to get frustrated and confess, "Oh, who am I kidding? Look over here, guys... your little pet just ratted me out."
I try to keep my stories light-humored and in the spirit of the original Hanna-Barbera series, and should I sketch this story up, that's what I will smurf up.

More on my silly Smurf Wizard of Oz idea...
-- Instead of ruby red slippers, Sassette wears ruby red barettes on her pigtails. Same powers as with Dorothy's slippers. When Hogatha tries to touch Sassette's barettes, they emit a red shock that blows Hogatha's wig right off her head.
-- Instead of poppies, Hogatha knocks our friends out with a field of smurfberry blossoms. Don't ask how they end up in Oz, just accept it.
-- When Glinda (Smurfette) tells Sassette to go to the Sapphire City to meet the Wizard who can help her get home, she quips "It used to be green, but the city was convinced to change it to blue by the tourist commission."
-- When Sassette and our friends ring on the familiar doorbell at the gate to the Sapphire City, it rings like Big Ben, complete with accompanying camera jiggling. The doorkeeper, who looks like Jokey, peers his head out and in his best Lurch/Addams Family voice asks "You rang?"
-- In getting prepped and made over for their visit to the Wizard, Hefty (Tin Man) is taken apart and given a 30-point inspection, Clumsy (Scarecrow) is restuffed with fresh hay, Vexy (Cowardly Lioness) gets her claws painted, Sassette (Dorothy) gets a shampoo, and Little Squeaky (Toto) gets a doggie-style pet bath and is treated to brie cheese.
Like with my "Remembering Squeaky" story, this will be sketched out as thumbnails and eventually posted online.
I have a bachelor's degree in communications and looking to pursue a master's in creative writing, in case you're wondering where I get these crazy ideas. ![[Wink]](wink.gif)

Okay, little bit more plotline to the story.
After the Wizard of Oz (Brainy) is exposed as what is believed to be a fraud, he tells our friends that the gifts they were looking for (brains, a heart, courage) were within them all along. The Cowardly Lioness (Vexy) protests that they wasted an entire story and artist's ink just to come to that conclusion. The Wizard calmly and confidently replies that they didn't realize that because they all felt so bad about themselves and their faults that they were blind to the good things inside them, and it had to take a third party to point out those good things demonstrated through their heroic acts.
Sassette (Dorothy) has a big grin on her freckled face and exclaims "Smurfaroo! You really ARE wonderful, Mr. Wizard!" and goes on to say that he didn't need magic powers to be wonderful; he proved himself to be wonderful by helping them see the smurfy things about themselves they were so desperately trying to find. The Wizard is encouraged by the Smurfling's affirmation. This is where I put a twist to the familiar story--the Wizard needs Sassette and her friends as much as they need him, and they all become smurfy friends.

I'll enjoy seeing the execution of this. An interesting take on a classic story. By the way, have you considered a small amount of self-referencing, i.e. somebody breaking character and being shushed because the show must go on? Sounds like something the clumsy/brainy duo might be likely to succumb to. ![[Wink]](wink.gif)

I'm already thinking of that. In showbiz it's called "breaking the fourth wall" as well as "breaking character".
-- Sassette occasionally is called Dorothy throughout the story, mostly by the Clumsy/Brainy duo even though they aren't paired up.
-- When Clumsy (the scarecrow) makes an epic mistake, Brainy (the Wizard) tells him that it's okay, it was an innocent mistake. "A clumsy one, mind you, but an innocent one nevertheless."
-- Vexy (the Cowardly Lioness) is chastised by Sassette for pretending to be ferocious when she's really sweet as a kitten when they first meet: "Fibbing felines, Miss Lioness, why do you have to be so naughty?" Vexy's reply: "I don't know, I guess I was created that way. My fur was a different color back then."
-- Hogatha refers to Janet Waldo (her voice actress in the TV series) as a fellow witch.
-- The cast interrupts Narrator's voiceover parts when the poor guy gets the story wrong.
How all this will be squeezed into a story of about 12 pages max remains to be seen, but let's see what happens.

BTW, I already have my own version of the story in the Empath: The Luckiest Smurf series, called "Somewhere Over The Rainbow".

Okay, here's a first look at how the Smurfs would look in my fan comic "The Smurf Wizard of Oz":

If they make you want to give them a warm smurfy hug, I've accomplished my goal. ![[Smile]](smile.gif)

I know this thread is dedicated to the Oz story, but here's yet another fanfic idea that came to me two days ago: a retelling of the TV episode "The Purple Smurfs" (G'nap! G'nap! G'nap!) in which after all the Smurfs turn purple, they continue to bite each other and get violently angry because nothing happens anymore.
Papa Smurf rallies the infected Smurfs to go attack Gargamel and bite him to most certain doom. The dangerous purple bug follows along, hoping to find more creatures to infect. The purple critters swarm into Gargy's hovel, but all the g'nap-g'napping is for nothing because the purple bug's venom has no effect on humans or cats. Out of desperation, Gargamel creates an antidote to keep the purple Smurfs from completely demolishing his hovel and send them away. The antidote works, but his hovel gets thrashed anyway thanks to the always agitated Vexy. Gargy tells the cured Smurfs "Okay, you're all back to your sickly sweet selves, now please get the smurf out of my house and leave me in peace."
More to come...

Okay, I'm now drawing up the first three pages of "The Smurf Wizard of Oz", in the same thumbnail sketch style of "Remembering Squeaky". Compared to that previous fan story, "Oz" will be totally humorous, a light-hearted parody and homage to the film that celebrates its 75th anniversary in 2014.
Here's a little preview:
** The Smurflings scream in horror "NARRATOR?!? OH NO!!!" when Grandpa tells them he's taking a break from storytelling to let Narrator fill in. Vexy scolds them "HEY! You unsmurfy brats be NICE!"
** When Narrator has the Smurflings' attention in telling them how they're part of the Oz story he's about to read, Grouchy screams from the back "Get to it already! I HATE long intros!" (Poor Narrator gets no respect, eh?)
** Once the Oz story finally begins and gets to the part of the coming tornado, Brainy bugs Smurfette again by derisively calling her Papa's second-in-command, only to have it smurf back on him when he suggests someone should climb on a rooftop and check the horizon for a coming storm front, Smurfette volunteers him. "You say I'm Papa's second-in-command, right? So that's a direct order!"
More to come... ![[Razz]](tongue.gif)

"(Gulp)... Kansas Kangaroos, Little Squeaky! I got a feeling... that we're not in Smurf Village anymore!"
The first few pages of "The Smurf Wizard of Oz" will upload tomorrow (Thursday).

Alright, fellow Smurfs, "The Smurf Wizard of Oz" (thumbnail sketches) is finally here! On this post are the first four pages, in which Narrator introduces the story, how it's been Smurfified, and dives in. The Smurf Village gets ready for a coming tornado, with Sassette and Smurfette taking shelter in Vexy's hut. And from the outset, Vexy being Vexy chastises the Smurflings as only she can.

Pages 5 through 8 will be in my next post.

And now, here are pages 4 through 8, in which Sassette argues with Smurfette and Vexy over Little Squeaky accidentally being locked out, just as the tornado hits. Ultimately Sassy and Squeaks land in Oz, landing on the Wicked Witch of the East, meeting the Munchkins, and with Smurfette making her grand entrance as Glinda, the Smurfy Good Witch of the South.
I haven't seen "Smurfs 2" or "Smurfy Hollow", so I'd like to know: is Hackus really a slobbering idiot as I make him out to be in this fan parody?

I also realize that this is going to be big, much more than the 12 pages I hoped to max out on. Looks more like 24 to 30--almost as long as a "Smurfy Hollow" plotline. But forward...
More to follow.
