He's not elderly old, but he is "mean, sour, crafty, and cruel", and he gets his pleasure making up gold of Smurfs that live by the golden rule.

For me, gargamel is a love/hate thing. I mean, I love that he's really funny, and I'm always laughing at him. And I hate him because he wants to eat/turn the smurfs into gold.
So yeah, I love him, and I hate him.

The blue plague song is so weird! I have the episode on DVD, it's long because repeats everything 3 times! I like Gargamel because he is funny and he made Smurfette, but otherwise I think he's one word: DUMB!

The song itself is based on a similar villain song from Yogi's First Christmas, which definitely tells you that this is a Hanna-Barbera production.

Gargamel is badly needed in the comics so there can be good adventures.
In the film "The Smurfs" he is simply the best, I think. Especially I like when he is in prison and just flies away from it, when he is about to be beaten up.

You're right, he is a traitor! Never underestimate the dark side of being obsessed with Smurfs, I leads to an inner "Gargamel" instead of an inner Smurf! In my opinion the main reason why Gargamel hates the Smurfs is because he never conformed to be defeated, in the adventure in which they saved a Smurf who had fallen in his trap. Since he's always considered himself a great wizard, this was a tremendous blow to his pride.
