Here's the start of the fanfiction story I had worked on and then deleted and now am trying to write again which is Empath's first Christmas story in the series.

Part 1:

Empath woke up on December 24 to a bright and snowy Christmas Eve morning. He was watching as the village was making final preparations for Christmas Day, one of his favorite days of the year. He knew that that day was a custom mostly celebrated by humans that coincided with the Smurfs' original celebration of the Winter Solstice, which was a few days earlier. However, that day seemed special to humans because it was the day that legends say the Savior of all mankind, Jesus Christ, was born in a stable in Bethlehem, as his fellow Smurf Tapper had explained to him. This Savior had grown up to do all sorts of miracles -- healing the sick, raising the dead, feeding a few thousand people with only a few loaves and some fish -- that rivaled and even surpassed what any wizard could do. However, His greatest miracle was being able to raise Himself from the dead after three days of being laid in a tomb when He was crucified for the sins of mankind. And one of His promises that He will return to set up His kingdom here on Earth when the gospel has been shared all around the world as a witness to all the nations.

Empath sighed as he watched from his doorstep all the activity going on, happy to know that this will be his first Christmas in the Smurf Village as a free Smurf. He couldn't think of a gift that was more worthy to be thankful for other than his freedom, where he no longer had to spend similar holidays being locked up in a place where it was all work and study with no time or place for any celebrations or feeling anything. Now that he thought of it, another gift he was thankful for was knowing who and what he truly is, after years of being told that he was a Psyche.

Just then, Smurfette showed up at Empath's door. "Morning, Empath," she greeted as she gave him a kiss.

"Salutations, Smurfette," Empath greeted back. "That is an unusual way to greet your fellow Smurf in the morning, particularly this smurf."

Smurfette giggled. "You're smurfing under the mistletoe, silly!" She pointed to the sprig of mistletoe hanging over Empath's door. "It's tradition that whoever smurfs under the mistletoe around this time of year must smurf a kiss by someone who loves him."

Empath looked at Smurfette suspiciously. "This smurf can only wonder which Smurf put the mistletoe there in the first place!"

"Just you wait until you smurf what I have smurfed you for Christmas, Empath!" Smurfette said slyly.

"This smurf only hopes that it's in this smurf's size, Smurfette," Empath responded playfully.

Then the scent of something delicious tickled their noses. "It smells like Greedy is making up his Christmas gingerbread Smurf cookies," Empath noted.

"Mmmm, how smurfy they must be," Smurfette said. "Let's go and smurf if Greedy will smurf us a sample!"

"Hold on, Smurfette," Empath said as Smurfette pulled on his arm to go with her to Greedy's kitchen. "Don't you think it would ruin Christmas Day if you have one of Greedy's cookies now?"

"And let's not forget Tapper's eggnog with a little bit of sarsaparilla in it," Smurfette added. "And a smurfing cup of hot chocolate with a minty smurf of a smurfberry candy cane. Something to smurf us up on a cold winter's smurf."

"Great Ancestors, Smurfette, you seem very excited about this holiday," Empath commented.

"How could I not be this excited about it, Empath?" Smurfette said. "It's only about the sixth Christmas that I have smurfed since I was made into a real Smurf by Papa Smurf. Moreover, how could you not be this excited about it? This is your first Christmas away from Psychelia, where you don't have to worry about smurfing back there ever again. You're with your friends and your family, and more importantly, you're with me, and I don't want you to ever smurf a Christmas apart from me. Isn't that worth being excited?"

"Now that you've put it that way, Smurfette, there's just not enough days in the year to celebrate those things," Empath said. "But this smurf will be happy for the day when you will decide which Smurf you're going to marry someday."

"Well, that will have to be a surprise, Empath, but for now I'm happy enough to be smurfing with you," Smurfette said. "By the way, do you have any idea of what Handy may be smurfing us for Christmas?"

"This smurf doesn't use his minds-eye to invade somebody's private thoughts without their permission or when such may be necessary, Smurfette, so this smurf actually doesn't know," Empath replied. "All this smurf knows is that it's something similar to what the human enchanter Homnibus has in his hovel, and that it's going to take some time to build it, so we won't be able to see it until sometime early next year."

"Hmmm," Smurfette said, feeling a little disappointed. "Well, whatever it is, I am sure it will be smurf waiting for."

----------

At that point, Papa Smurf was busy in his laboratory talking to Brainy about one of his experiments when a Smurf was knocking on his door. The village leader opened it and found that it was Dreamy. "Good morning, Dreamy," he greeted. "What may I smurf you for?"

"Papa Smurf, I smurfed this excellent idea while I was smurfing last night," Dreamy started to explain, all excited. "You know how that human, Nicholas the toymaker, smurfs around on his sleigh with his smurf of eight reindeer on Christmas Eve smurfing gifts to all the people and children. Well, now that Empath is home, maybe we can smurf up our own sleigh and our own smurf of reindeer and smurf gifts to all our friends, like Homnibus, Sir Johan, Peewit, King Gerard, and Malchior. Wouldn't that be smurfy?"

"Dreamy, Dreamy, Dreamy, that idea is just too smurfy to work!" Brainy scolded. "It's too close to Christmas Day to smurf all that together, and besides that we smurfed most of our gifts for our fellow Smurfs, so how can we smurf gifts for our friends as well? Why don't you smurf back next year to present this idea to Papa Smurf when we actually have more time to smurf it?"

"Hold on, Brainy," Papa Smurf interrupted. "Although this idea may be too smurf to Christmas Day, I think that we may be able to smurf it off with every Smurf working together. Anyway, Christmas isn't all about what we smurf for ourselves, it's also about what we smurf for others, including the humans that we have been friends with since we first smurfed Johan and Peewit the time we were smurfing for the magic flute we had lost. Dreamy, we will smurf this idea of yours into motion!"

"Thank you, Papa Smurf," Dreamy said.

Brainy sighed. "If you smurf so, Papa Smurf, I will gladly smurf my advice on how we can smurf it."

Just then, Empath showed up in Papa Smurf's laboratory with Smurfette. "Salutations, Papa Smurf," Empath greeted. "What did Dreamy wanted to see you for?"

"Remember the human boy we had smurfed in the forest 60 years ago, Empath?" Papa Smurf asked.

"The boy named Nicholas, as this smurf can recall," Empath answered. "He thought that the Smurfs were a group of little blue elves as we were helping him find his way out of the forest to be reunited with his parents who were looking for him when he was lost."

"Well, that human boy is now a toymaker, and one of the things he smurfs around this time of year is to smurf toys to children on a wooden sleigh being smurfed by a smurf of eight reindeer," Papa Smurf said. "He smurfs no children of his own, but he smurfs children enough to smurf his trade without any thought of reward other than smurfing that children are happy during Christmas."

"And apparently he hasn't forgotten about Papa Smurf, for he smurfs this big red suit whenever he smurfs out on Christmas Eve to smurf out his presents with his smurf of flying reindeer..." Dreamy explained further.

"Flying reindeer?" Empath asked, sounding that he couldn't believe what he was hearing.

"Actually, the reindeer didn't fly until we smurfed out that Baby Smurf had smurfed the reindeer to fly on that Christmas Eve when Nicholas was under the evil spell of Chlorhydris that we had to smurf him out of," Brainy interjected.

"Anyway, Dreamy had this suggestion that we should smurf up our own sleigh and smurf of reindeer that we should smurf into practice by Christmas Eve, and I would like to smurf it with the entire Smurf Village," Papa Smurf said.

"Oooh, that sounds like a smurfy idea, Papa Smurf," Smurfette said. "But who's going to smurf the part of Nicholas on his sleigh? And where are we going to smurf the reindeer for the sleigh?"

"If I undersmurf Dreamy's suggestion correctly, it would smurf to reason that Tailor Smurf would smurf up reindeer costumes for eight Smurfs to wear," Brainy answered. "And Empath would most likely be one of the reindeer since he can smurf the sleigh and the reindeer into the sky with his minds-eye. And as for the part of Nicholas, I believe Papa Smurf would be the best Smurf for that job."

"Thank you, Brainy," Papa Smurf said. "I appreciate that you would smurf me suitable for the role of Nicholas, given the role that I smurf in the village with my little Smurfs."

"It's not just the qualities of your character that you smurf, Papa Smurf," Brainy said. "It's also that you resemble Nicholas, with the red suit, the white beard, and that stomach of yours!"

Papa Smurf didn't like hearing the "stomach of yours" part as the other Smurfs in the laboratory giggled. "Thank you again, Brainy!"

"So what's the plan, Papa Smurf?" Empath asked. "Are we actually going to put Dreamy's suggestion into practice?"

"I don't see why we wouldn't, Empath, even as smurf as we are to Christmas Day," Papa Smurf said. "It's more of a human custom as we have very few friends among humans that we can smurf our presents to, but that's part of what the holiday is about, and it's also part of what being a Smurf is all about. Have Harmony summon every Smurf around the speaking mushroom so I can smurf them what we're going to smurf, Empath. I want to get this smurfing right away."

"This smurf acknowledges, Papa Smurf," Empath said, sounding excited.

Part 2:

Soon every Smurf in the village heard Harmony's summoning call to gather around the speaking mushroom for Papa Smurf's announcement. They arrived to see Papa Smurf with Empath, Smurfette, Brainy, and Dreamy there at the mushroom.

"My little Smurfs," Papa Smurf announced, "I know that we're only one day away from Christmas Day, but Dreamy just smurfed up with a brilliant suggestion of what we can smurf for Christmas Eve for our friends. We know that Nicholas the toymakers smurfs out at night with his smurf of reindeer to deliver toys and gifts to the human children, so I thought that this year we should smurf our gifts to our friends in the same manner. What we're going to need is a sleigh and some reindeer costumes for eight Smurfs, which I know that you'll able to smurf up in time before midnight tonight."

"Well, I can smurf you a sleigh that we can smurf for tonight, Papa Smurf," Handy said.

"And I can smurf up some reindeer costumes for the eight Smurfs to smurf," Tailor added. "It may be a rush job, but I'll smurf the best that I can under the smurfumstances. Of course, I'm going to need to smurf some small branches for antlers."

"This smurf and the Smurflings can help you out with that, Tailor," Empath offered.

"But who's going to smurf the sleigh up into the sky like Nicholas with his reindeer?" one Smurf asked.

"Oh, please, that's such a silly question to ask," Brainy answered in his normal self-important. "It doesn't smurf a genius to see that Empath is more than capable of smurfing such a task. Of course, I would probably smurf the same with Papa Smurf's magic books if neither of them were here to smurf that, because I'm just as capable of smurfing up magic spells and formulas as Papa Smurf is, being his assistant and all, and Papa Smurf would want such a capable Smurf to smurf that because..."

At that point, Brainy got booted out of the village. "So much for smurfing the holiday spirit!" he groaned.

"So, who among you would also like to smurf gifts to our friends in this manner?" Papa Smurf asked.

"I do, Papa Smurf," Vanity said. "I can't wait to smurf my beautiful scented smurf packs to all my friends."

"And I would like to smurf my beautiful music," Harmony said, playing a bit of his horn.

"And I would love to smurf all my creative works," Poet said.

"Mon ami, I have some masteurpiesas that I would be happy to smurf as gifts," Painter said.

In fact, most of the village seemed eager to get the ball rolling on Papa Smurf's plan for Christmas Eve.

"Well, I guess that settles it," Papa Smurf said, pleased with the results. "Empath, you smurf the Smurflings out into the forest to smurf up small branches for the reindeer costumes. I'll be in Tailor's workshop in case any Smurf needs me."

"This is going to be the smurfiest Christmas Eve yet, Papa Smurf," Smurfette said, all excited.

----------

As Empath and the Smurflings were out in the forest gathering small branches, he was listening to them talking about all the presents they got in previous years' Christmases, saying which one was their favorite toy to get.

"Empath, what was your favorite toy that you smurfed for Christmas?" Nat asked.

Empath thought about that for a moment. "The only toy this smurf thought was my favorite was this pink rabbit that this smurf received from Vanity Smurf on the first Winter Solstice that this smurf had celebrated. This smurf had called him Smoogle."

"Smoogle? That's a really weird name for a toy rabbit!" Slouchy commented.

"Admittedly, the gift was rather embarrassing to this smurf," Empath said. "But Smoogle ended up being the toy that this smurf played with a lot, as this smurf practiced using his minds-eye animating the toy so that it behaved like a real rabbit. Hefty didn't like seeing this smurf with Smoogle, so he decided to be cruel and tear the toy rabbit apart, hoping it would stop this smurf from playing with it. But this smurf had sewn and patched up Smoogle and left it with Papa Smurf when this smurf had to return to Psychelia."

"What happened to Smoogle, Empath?" Sassette asked.

"The toy rabbit got worn out from so much playing around with him, so this smurf gave it to Sloppy, who loved collecting old worn-out toys," Empath answered. "He probably still has it in his collection."

Just then something shiny caught the attention of Snappy Smurfling. "Hey, did you Smurfs smurf that?"

The other Smurfs turned to look in the direction of where Snappy saw the something shiny. "Oh, look," Nat said, "It's a reindeer smurfing out here in the forest."

"Smurf at that nose," Sassette said. "It's so red and shiny! What's he doing smurfing out here in the forest?"

"He probably had smurfed out here all alone in the forest because of that nose, Sassette," Nat answered.

"Well, shiny nose or not, I'm going to smurf him a big welcome!" Snappy said, heading in the direction.

"Snappy, dont!" Slouchy warned, knowing what his "big welcome" really was.

But Snappy didn't heed the warning. Instead, he appeared in front of the reindeer as he was eating things from the ground. "Hey, reindeer, is that your nose or were you smurfed with a firebug on your face!" Snappy said in a taunting manner.

The reindeer was startled by Snappy's appearance and ran off into the forest.

"Oh, nice smurfing there, Snappy," Sassette said, displeased.

"Yeah, you smurf fun of a reindeer just because he's smurfed with a red nose," Nat added, also not pleased.

"Well, what do you expect me to smurf?" Snappy said. "He's different from all the reindeer that we smurf in the forest."

"Empath is different from all the Smurfs in the village just because he smurfs a yellow star on his foresmurf, Snappy," Sassette said. "Are you going to smurf fun of him just because he smurfs so different from them?"

"Snappy's appearance alone may have been enough to startle the reindeer," Empath suggested. "Nonetheless, Snappy, your behavior and commentary were unneccessary and inappropriate. We're going to find the reindeer, and when we do, you're going to apologize to him for how you acted towards him."

Snappy sighed as he trailed behind Empath and the other Smurflings in their search for the reindeer. Soon they had found him grazing near another tree.

"Now you Smurflings stay put while this smurf communicates alone with the reindeer," Empath instructed. They stood a good distance away from the reindeer while Empath cautiously and quietly approached the reindeer.

"Salutations, fellow reindeer," Empath greeted. The reindeer looked at the Smurf appearing to be startled. "Please do not run off. We mean you no harm, and this smurf apologizes for the action of my fellow Smurf."

The reindeer looked at Empath curiously and sniffed him. He then relaxed, seeing that Empath was not a threat. Nat saw this and took it as a sign for him and the other Smurfs to come closer.

"This smurf understands that you are alone and are different from the other reindeer," Empath said to the reindeer. "Your red nose no doubt has caused you to be shunned from the others. This smurf is also born with a glowing mark on this smurf's forehead and is also different from the other Smurfs in this smurf's village. And this smurf has also lived apart from the other Smurfs because of that."

"We can smurf you back to the Smurf Village where we will smurf care of you until we can smurf you a home," Nat said to the reindeer.

"You don't have to smurf out here all alone," Sassette said.

"Maybe we can smurf him to Nicholas," Slouchy suggested. "He would be able to smurf him a home."

"What? Are you smurfy?" Snappy said. "He's already different enough that other reindeer don't want to smurf around him."

"This smurf doesn't think that just leaving the reindeer to fend for himself out in the forest would be a good idea," Empath said. "He needs to be around others who will care for him, no matter how different he is from the other reindeer, and the Smurf Village is a good enough place for him to go. We might as well bring him along with us so Papa Smurf will know what we can do with him."

"Empath, the other Smurfs are going to smurf fun of him as well," Snappy said. "Smurf how different he is!"

"Being born different isn't anybody's fault, Snappy," Empath said. "However he got the shiny red nose, this reindeer deserves to be loved and cared for no matter what. And we're going to provide the care because that's part of what being a Smurf is. This smurf will not leave him in the forest just because he isn't like all the other reindeer."

"Neither will I, Empath," Nat agreed. "Come along, reindeer, we'll smurf you the way to our village!"

Snappy again sighed as he followed Empath and the other Smurflings taking the reindeer with them.

Part 3:

Back in the Smurf Village, the Smurfs are busy preparing for their first Christmas Eve flight over the Smurf forest. Handy was in his workshop building a sleigh with the help of Carpenter Smurf, with Timber Smurf providing the wood and Carpenter Smurf providing the paint. Tailor was in his workshop taking measurements for the Smurfs that Papa Smurf has chosen to be his reindeer team: Hefty, Lazy, Clumsy, Grouchy, Vanity, Scaredy, and Jokey. Papa Smurf was also measured for his Santa Smurf suit, and he didn't like having to hear Tailor's comments about Papa Smurf's stomach getting bigger. The other Smurfs were busy putting together their gifts that would be put into the sack for Papa Smurf and the Smurf reindeer team to carry on that night: Vanity's scented gift packs and perfumes, Smurfette's jewelry, Poet's poems, Harmony's music sheets, Painter's masterpieces, and, with the help of Printer Smurf, copies of the latest edition of Quotations Of Brainy Smurf.

Tanner Smurf arrived in Handy's workshop with the leather harnesses he had made for the sleigh and the reindeer team. He had already showed them to Tailor and Papa Smurf, who approved of their design before he brought them over to Handy.

"These will smurf perfect," Handy said after he had inspected them. "We'll attach them to the sleigh when we're finished."

"This surely is a lot of work for a smurf-of-the moment idea Dreamy had," Carpenter said.

"I know, but since what Papa Smurf wanted me to smurf based on what Homnibus smurfed in his hovel is going to smurf some time with build, and since that's also going to require Miner smurfing me the right materials for it, I can't just smurf back and smurf nothing," Handy said. "It just makes me all smurfed up when there's nothing for me to smurf besides the usual repair jobs."

"Say, did it just smurf brighter in here?" Carpenter asked when he noticed a red glow in Handy's workshop.

Handy noticed it too. "Yeah, it seems to be smurfing from outside."

Just then, every Smurf noticed the bright red glow from outside their houses. They went out to see where that glow is coming from. And sure enough, they saw that it came from the nose of a reindeer that Empath and the Smurflings had brought back into the village.

"Golly, where did that red-smurfed reindeer smurf from?" Clumsy asked.

"I don't know, but it sure smurfs funny with the red glowing nose," Jokey commented, laughing.

Every Smurf had gathered around the reindeer, wondering and commenting about the reindeer, when Papa Smurf approached Empath. "Great Smurfs Of Fire, where did you smurf this reindeer?" he asked.

"We had found him out in the forest looking for food while we were gathering branches for the antlers, Papa Smurf," Empath answered.

"Empath said that the reindeer was smurfed with this nose at birth and was smurfed away by the other reindeer because of it," Nat said.

"I see," Papa Smurf said, stroking his beard. "He must have been smurfing out in the forest all by himself since then."

"So can we keep him, Pappy Smurf, at least until we can smurf a home for him?" Sassette asked.

"I don't smurf where we have much choice, Sassette," Papa Smurf answered. "We obviously can't smurf him back out into the wild. I will leave you Smurflings in charge of caring for the reindeer, and we can smurf him something to eat, while I'll smurf if we can have Nicholas the toymaker smurf him a home among his reindeer."

"Papa Smurf, if that reindeer was smurfed away by the other reindeer because of that nose, wouldn't Nicholas' reindeer smurf him away as well?" Brainy asked.

"It's a chance we're going to have to take, Brainy," Papa Smurf said. "The reindeer needs to smurf among others of his kind, and Nicholas is the best human who could take care of reindeer regardless of how different he or she is."

"Oh, don't worry, poor reindeer," Smurfette said, feeling her heart going out to the creature. "We'll smurf good care of you even if we don't smurf a home for you."

"This smurf will help the Smurflings with taking care of the reindeer while he is staying with us," Empath announced.

"Empath, you need to be smurfed for your reindeer costume," Tailor called out.

"Don't worry, Empath, we'll smurf care of things from here," Papa Smurf said as Empath went off into Tailor's workshop.

"Papa Smurf, how did this reindeer get smurfed with a shiny red nose?" Smurfette asked.

"I honestly don't know, Smurfette," Papa Smurf answered. "It's probably one of those questions that only Mother Nature can answer, since this is usually what she smurfs. Maybe this is like Empath's smurfmark, that it has a purpose that has yet to be revealed."

"But to smurf out in the forest all by himself just because of that, with the other reindeer smurfing him away?" Smurfette said. "It just seems so unfair for him."

"I know, Smurfette, but sadly life is never fair," Papa Smurf said with a sigh. "We all have to make smurf with what we're smurfed in this life and smurf for the best regardless."

Soon a few Smurfs have carried out a bowl of food that they knew that reindeer would eat and set it out before the creature. He eat the food heartily and seemed pleased that there were others who would care for him.

"That food certainly smurfed you such a glow," Smurfette said, pleased for the reindeer. "If you'll pardon the expression."

----------

In her observatory, Chlorhydris watched through her magic telescope and observed all the activity going on in the surrounding villages. She had nobody but a pet macaw in her residence to keep her company as she continued to look on, displeased.

"Christmas," she said, "that wretched holiday that brings joy and cheer to every heart around the world, including the children to whom Nicholas brings presents every year around this time. All it brings to me is a sad reminder of how my beloved, who promised that he would marry me, had left me at the altar on my wedding night. And since then my world has grown cold, and I will not rest until the whole world feels just as cold as I do, when there's nothing to look forward to except black and endless misery on a cold winter night."

She left her magic telescope when she had enough of watching the world preparing for a celebration and headed downstairs into her laboratory, where she was brewing something in her cauldron.

"Well, this Christmas season will be the beginning of a dark season for all. Thanks to my grandmother's recipe for Split Pea Soup Fog, I will cover the entire world with such a thick fog that nobody will be able to travel through it...not even Nicholas and his flying reindeer. And when he won't be able to deliver his presents to the children at midnight, they will be so heartbroken that they will feel just like me. And when nobody can celebrate a holiday with the weather being like that, they will know just how cold winter really is when there is an everlasting winter in their hearts! All I need now are a few more ingredients, and the formula for Split Pea Soup Fog will be complete."

She and her macaw laughed at the thought of a miserable Christmas.

----------

Back in the village, as the Smurfs were putting the finishing touches to their Christmas Eve project, Brainy decided to pay Tapper a visit. Actually, the other Smurfs didn't like Brainy constantly offering his advice when it really wasn't needed and suggested that he would take his advice elsewhere. Realizing that nobody wanted to hear him, Brainy went to the only place and to the only other person besides Empath who was willing to listen to him.

Inside Tapper's Tavern, Brainy noticed that the village bartender was doing something with the model of a barn structure. "Greetings, my fellow Brainy, what may I smurf you for?" Tapper said.

"Aren't you a little old to still be smurfing with toys, Tapper?" Brainy asked.

"This isn't a toy, my good Brainy...this is a manger set," Tapper answered, showing him the barn structure and all the figures in it. "Sculptor had smurfed me this some time ago. This is the depiction of the first Christmas day, when our sweet Savior Jesus Christ was born. Those figures are His parents, Mary and Joseph...well, actually, Mary is the mother of Jesus, while Joseph was simply the man who smurfed Him like a father. Years ago, in the land of Judea, Mary had consmurfed Jesus through the Holy Spirit, and nine months later she and her husband Joseph had smurfed to Bethlehem, where they had to smurf in a stable because there was no room for them in the inn. It was in that stable that Mary smurfed birth to Jesus, and around that same time, angels smurfed to shepherds in the fields to announce the birth of the Son of God, who came to smurf the miracle and then tell all the people about it."

"But that's just a story about a human savior, Tapper," Brainy said. "What does that have to smurf with us?"

"The reason for the holiday is the smurfing of that Savior, Brainy," Tapper answered. "The Almighty had smurfed this world to be perfect, which includes everything it it, even us. Unfortunately, mankind had sinned and that affected everything in God's creation. But God had loved the world enough to smurf us His only begotten Son, so that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have ever-smurfing life. He smurfed us the greatest form of love in that His Son was smurfed on the cross to pay for our sins and to smurf from the dead the third day. And He promises that someday He will smurf again to judge the living and the dead, and there will smurf a kingdom where there's no more pain, suffering, or death."

"Well, that's still just an interesting story, Tapper," Brainy said. "I just can't believe in this Savior of yours without proof!"

"Even if you smurfed all the proof in the world, Brainy, would it be enough for you to believe?" Tapper asked. "Believing in the Almighty is smurfing your faith in what you can't see, but like Smurfette's horse friend Blue Eyes, just because you can't see the Almighty doesn't mean that he's not there. There's no magic power in the world that will help you see the truth for yoursmurf. It all smurfs down to having faith, for without faith it's impossible to please the Almighty."

"You sound convinced that I need to be saved by this Savior of yours," Brainy said. "Well, I am happy smurfing the way that I am, and there's nothing you or this Almighty can smurf to change that!"

Tapper sighed. "I won't stop praying for your soul, Brainy. I love you too much to ever want to smurf you perish. And so does the Almighty, whether you believe in Him or not."

----------

By early evening, the sleigh and all the reindeer costumes were ready. Tailor had made an additional costume for Nat since he wanted to be part of the reindeer team, but Brainy kept saying no, because the team was already selected, and they weren't going to have anyone but adult Smurfs in it.

Greedy and Tapper had come out with their gingerbread cookies and hot chocolate. "What's this? You're going to smurf this before Christmas Day?" Smurfette asked.

"Well, given all the hard work the Smurfs are putting into Dreamy's Christmas Eve project, they might as well deserve to have an early treat, courtesy of us," Greedy explained.

Every Smurf was eager to gather around the two Smurfs serving the treats. The cookies were so delicious that Greedy's plates were empty in seconds.

"I...uh, love gingerbread Smurf cookies," Grouchy said as he ate his share.

Then Papa Smurf came out with a sack full of gifts to put into the sleigh. He was dressed up in his Santa Smurf costume, and looking rather pleased about it. "Oooh, you look smurfy in that outfit, Papa Smurf," Smurfette commented as she pinned a sprig of holly in his hat and gave him a kiss on the cheek.

"Why, thank you, Smurfette," Papa Smurf said, smiling back. "I see that you're also smurfed up for the occasion!"

"I was going to smurf the rest of the village in smurfing Christmas carols while you and Empath were smurfing through the air delivering the presents, Papa Smurf," Smurfette said, showing off her festive dress. "Also Baby Smurf wants to smurf with you tonight!"

"I don't smurf why not, Smurfette," Papa Smurf said as she handed Baby Smurf to him after he got into the sleigh. "We'll certainly smurf a lot of fun playing Santa Smurf, won't we?"

Baby Smurf gurgled out a happy answer in agreement.

----------

In Chlorhydris' castle, her laboratory is full of thick icy smoke emanating from her cauldron. It is so chilly that it's making everything in her laboratory freeze up.

"There, the Split Pea Soup Fog formula is ready at last!" the evil witch said, pleased with the results. She ladled some of it into a bowl. "Now all I have to do is cast it out into the clear black sky, and soon the vapors of the formula will rise and cause thick dark clouds to form that will blanket the entire region and make it impossible for anyone to see what's right in front of their faces. And then the festive spirit of Christmas will grow cold and dark, and Nicholas will not able to deliver his gifts to the children tonight. Oh, how delightful it will be when they wake on Christmas morning only to discover that there are no toys left for them, and their little hearts will break and they will see for themselves how petty and cruel the world can be."

She went outside of the observatory and lifted the bowl containing the formula into the air. "Rise, rise, into the skies, give this holiday an unwelcome surprise!" she said, laughing.

And soon the vapors of the formula rose high into the air and formed thick clouds that filled the sky and descended down to the ground, covering the whole region in a thick fog that made it impossible for anyone to see beyond what was in front of their faces.

Part 4:

In the Smurf Village, the dense fog was so thick that the Smurfs ended up bumping into each other and into their houses as they went about. Except for Empath, who was able to navigate through the fog only by using his minds-eye, it was impossible for any Smurf to go in any direction anywhere.

"This fog is so unnaturally thick, my little Smurfs, I smurf that there's an evil magic behind this," Papa Smurf said. "Until I can find a way to smurf away much of the fog so that we'd at least be able to smurf around the village, it would be best for all of us to smurf inside our own homes tonight."

"Oh, dear," Smurfette moaned. "That means we won't be able to smurf our first Christmas Eve flight."

"That's true, Smurfette," Papa Smurf said. "But even more so, Nicholas won't be able to smurf through the sky with his sleigh like he normally smurfs around this time. If he isn't able to smurf his presents to the children by around midnight, they will wake up on Christmas morning and be heartbroken."

"There's got to be something we can smurf for him, Papa Smurf, but I'm all out of bright ideas," Brainy said.

Just then a brilliant red light shone through the fog, causing it to disperse around Brainy. Everyone noticed that the brilliant red light came from the reindeer's red nose.

"That's it!" Empath realized. "The reindeer with the red nose can help Nicholas lead his team of reindeer safely through the sky. Brainy, you just came up with a bright idea!"

"I did? Oh, yes, well, I knew something like this had to smurf up sooner or later!" Brainy said, sounding sure of himself.

Papa Smurf chuckled. "Empath, I think it's time you introduced Nicholas to your reindeer friend!"

Empath turned to the reindeer. "This smurf will take us into the sky and guide us to Nicholas' home while you clear the sky with your red nose. This smurf will find you a home yet."

The reindeer nodded as he allowed Empath to ride on his back. The Smurfs watched as Empath and the reindeer flew into the sky, with the reindeer's red nose shining like a beacon through the thick fog.

----------

At Nicholas' home, the toymaker was ready to make his toy deliveries with his team of reindeer when he noticed the thick fog covering the entire region.

"Of all the things to happen on a Christmas Eve!" Nicholas said, sounding frustrated. "Well, don't worry, my reindeer friends, we will find some way to get the presents delivered on time for all the children...if there is some way we can travel through this fog!"

Just then he saw a red glow flying through the sky, coming down towards him. He saw that it was reindeer with a glowing red nose, and riding him was a Smurf.

"My fellow Smurf, what is this that you bring to my home tonight?" Nicholas asked, wondering about the reindeer.

"Fellow Nicholas, this is a reindeer that the Smurfs have found in our forest today," Empath explained. "He has been living alone in the forest because of his red nose, which you can see is able to shine brightly enough so that you will be able to travel through the skies to make your deliveries. We humbly offer him to you in the hopes that he will help you and that you will give him a suitable home. Will you accept?"

Nicholas didn't know what to say. "By Jove, this is such an excellent gift! Surely he will able to help me, and I will surely make sure that he has a home so that he will not be alone anymore. I must put him at the head of my reindeer team by making some adjustments. I will name him Rudolph, which is the name of the brightest child in the village."

The reindeer licked Nicholas' face, happy in that the toymaker has accepted him. Soon with a few adjustments, Rudolph was put at the head of the team of reindeer, with Nicholas ready to ride off into the night sky.

"I must pay homage to Mother Nature for this wonderful gift that was bestowed upon me, fellow Smurf," Nicholas said, happy and eager to get his flight started. "Thank you again for bringing Rudolph to me!"

"And thank you for giving him a home, Nicholas," Empath said in return. "May you have a Merry Christmas!"

"And the same to you, my friend!" Nicholas said as Empath flew off. Then he turned to his reindeer team. "All ready, Rudolph! Lead the way!"

And so with Rudolph's red nose shining bright, Nicholas and sleigh lifted off into the night sky, on his way to delivering the toys and presents to the children.

----------

Back in the Smurf Village, Papa Smurf had finished working on a formula that caused the fog to disperse around the area of the Smurf Village. The Smurfs cheered as they are able to now walk around the village with no problem.

Soon Empath had returned, and was dressed up in his reindeer costume, but every Smurf noticed that Empath had worn red paint on his nose. "Hey, Empath, what's with the red nose?" Jokey asked, laughing. "You're going to smurf like that reindeer now?"

"That's what this smurf is going to do, Jokey," Empath answered, smiling but not laughing. "Nicholas is now delivering his presents to the children thanks to the reindeer he now calls Rudolph. And this smurf is going to be the lead of the reindeer team."

"Does that mean I get to be part of the reindeer team now, Empath?" Nat asked. "I already have the costume for it."

Empath smiled. "This smurf doesn't see why not, Nat. But with the harnesses only able to hold eight reindeer, this smurf will have to hold onto those of the first two reindeer while we make our flight."

"Hold on, Empath," Tanner said as he wrapped some rope around Empath's waist and attached it to the harnesses. "There, that should smurf it!"

"Okay, all of my reindeer Smurfs, time to smurf into costume!" Papa Smurf said.

"You heard Papa Smurf," Hefty said. "Let's smurf the reindeer team into shape!"

"I hate smurfing into shape," Grouchy said.

Lazy yawned. "You can smurf that again!"

And soon Papa Smurf and the nine Smurfs who are part of the reindeer team are ready to make their first flight over the forest. "Okay, Empath, steady as it smurfs!"

Empath nodded as he used his minds-eye abilities to lift up both the sleigh and the reindeer team into the night sky. The Smurfs down below the village cheered and waved goodbye as they watched the sleigh take off.

Then Smurfette led the Smurfs into singing Christmas carols: "Smurf, the herald angels sing, glory to the newborn King,..."

----------

The following day, on Christmas morning, Empath went off to Nicholas' home to pay Rudolph a visit. The skies were still cloudy, but the thick fog was dispersing at ground level. There Empath saw that Rudolph was happy in his new home -- and much more than that!

"Great Ancestors!" Empath exclaimed as he saw another reindeer, a female, approach the fence and nuzzle alongside Rudolph. "It appears that you now have a mate! This smurf is happy that you won't be alone anymore!"

Just then, Mother Nature appeared from out of nowhere. "Oh my...so this is where the poor reindeer I have given the red nose to has gone off to," she said, sounding regretful. "All those years, and I have not fixed this mistake because there was just so much for me to do. Well, not any longer. It is time to give this reindeer the normal life that he deserves."

"Please, Mother Nature, don't change him," Empath pleaded. "If it weren't for this mistake of yours, this Christmas would have been a terrible one for the human children. Look at how happy he is now knowing what he has done and who now loves him. Take that away from him and he won't be the same anymore. He won't be as useful as he is with the red nose."

Mother Nature pondered what Empath had told her. "Come to think of it, some of my mistakes have provided benefits that I would never have foreseen even with my power," she said. "Very well, if he is happy with the way he is now, I shall leave him be and deal with this dreadful fog that's been covering my forest. Have a merry Christmas, little Smurf, and see you in the spring!"

With that, Mother Nature disappeared in a sprinkle of snowflakes. Empath realized it is time to go home and open his presents, particularly the one that Smurfette had made for him.

"Farewell, my reindeer friends, and have a merry Christmas," Empath said as he flew off, watching the reindeer couple nuzzle each other, happy to be together.
