I think what happened was that The Wild Smurf story may have been intended to be a comic first but got revised for TV. then the first version came out as a comic.

I just went through doing a fan translation/adaptation of the original Black Smurfs story, basically because I wanted to see the original story in English more or less. But yeah, I can see that the story wouldn't translate as it is into English without being accidentally offensive in a racist sort of way.

I was fan-adapting "The Smurfnapper", which is the third story that appears in "The Black Smurfs" comic book collection and also what Papercutz will be publishing in "Gargamel And The Smurfs", because I wanted to get this story in English before the official English translation came out. Here is a scene from the fan adaptation where Brainy goes into a lengthy rant with his fellow Smurf near the end of the story:
