According to the fact that there is a movie of the smurfs coming out will indicate that these little blue guys will more then likely make a come back real soon.

As long as they still have fans the smurfs will never die [Wink]

I disagree that the Smurfs are dead. 2008 was the Smurfs 50th anniversary and the giant Smurf balloons were a highlight of the Macy's parade last year. The Smurfs could hardly be considered dead.

The Smurfs are so popular that Cool Smurf just bought new toys at the store. You can buy all types of Smurf products like clothing, figures, toys and DVD s. A new movie is forthcoming.

Long live the Smurfs!

I have checked various Smurf and animation message boards, and I haven't found anything about the Smurfs' death.
The only thing that I have ever found that had anything to do with the Smurfs getting destroyed was that UNICEF commercial from a few years back.

Smurfs may not be as popular as the were in the 80's, but they're far from dead. I would say they woke up from a long hibernation for their 50th anniversary. Season 1 is available on DVD, a movie is being made, and merchandise has been popping back up. Not to mention the special events celebrating the 50th anniversary that were held around Europe.

You say popular is being in stores. The Smurfs are in stores in the US Canada Europe and Australia and more!! They may be more popular in Europe, or maybe not in every store in the world, but more so now than in previous years. You can get Smurf clothing at Jay Jays in Australia. Go to mainstream stores throughout the US like Target or Wal mart or Toys r Us and you'll see! They all sell it.

Schleich who made the first PVCs are still making them in their stores etc..

I define popular as this: show someone a picture of a Smurf, and they'll know what it is. Even if they love or hate the Smurfs they know what a Smurf is, the world throughout. Almost all people know what Coca-Cola is, and a lot of people know what a Smurf is - THAT is popular.

As an aside, the topic started out about the Smurfs being dead. There is a big spectrum between dead and popular, especially with all the new merchandise, the new movie coming out, and fans like us keeping it alive!!

Vey well put. with fans around the world the Smurfs will live on forever.

And even though the Smurfs are rarely seen on tv nowadays, and in some countries not at all, I for one plan on keeping my CD's and tapes for my future children rather then let their mind rot from watching all those terrible new shows with tasteless potty humor we have today, and I'm sure many others agree with me and would do the same.

Most likely as soon (or just before) the movie comes out they will be swarming over Walmart, Zellers, and Toys 'R' us in Canada.
