Papa Smurf and Grandpa Smurf enter the past, but they don't enter it alone:

I don't know how many pages of this side tale I can create, given various limiting factors of trying to adapt this tale to the EMPATH universe of story-telling. I was hoping to incorporate elements from the second half of "The Smurfs That Time Forgot" as well as "Lost In The Ages" and "Cave Smurfs" into this side tale, but who knows what will happen?

By the way, I came up with a rather thematic soundtrack to "Smurfed Behind: The Departure", which includes these songs (roughly in its track order):
1. "I Ran" by A Flock Of Seagulls 2. "Your Wildest Dreams" by The Moody Blues 3. "Hands Of Time" by Asia 4. "Chill Of The Night" by Peter Schilling 5. "Sole Survivor" by Asia 6. "Never In A Million Years" by Asia 7. "Go" by Asia 8. "Nights In White Satin" by The Moody Blues 9. "Wherever You Are" by Asia 10. "An Extraordinary Life" by Asia 11. "Right Here Waiting" by Richard Marx 12. "Wishing" by Asia 13. "Anytime" by Asia 14. "Love Now Till Eternity" by Asia 15. "I Know You're Out There Somewhere" by The Moody Blues
Most of the songs I selected reflect the loss Empath feels of not having any of his fellow Smurfs (particularly Smurfette) being with him in the present.

And instead of the original story's 15 other characters, it's basically the entire village plus Smoogle and Puppy in this version:

In case you haven't noticed, this is the EMPATH: The Luckiest Smurf universe that this version of the story is set in, so it has absolutely no connection with your Smurfs/Thomas The Tank Train crossover story, Amtrak. This is a side tale of "Smurfed Behind: The Departure", where only Empath and Polaris Psyche are left in the village. Also, Papa and Grandpa Smurf are holding the Key of Chronos instead of the original story's time crystals.

Tapper is in this scene, which is borrowed from the Season 9 intro sequence:

I know! I talking about the #15 that you by mistake put in!
But, it would be neat if Empath and Polaris visited the Island of Sodor. Ha-ha!

It says "15 other characters", which means besides Papa and Grandpa Smurf there were 15 others in the original version of the story: Smurfette, Baby, Hefty, Handy, Brainy, Clumsy, Vanity, Lazy, Painter, Grouchy, Jokey, Greedy, Sassette, Snappy, and Wild. 16 if you also count Smoogle.
When the story of Empath and Polaris being left behind in the village was first conceived (back around the late 1990s), since I haven't seen much of any of the Season 9 episodes at that point, I naturally assumed that all the Smurf characters were sucked into the time vortex, and so decided to work from that premise. When I found out from recent viewings of some of the Season 9 episodes that only 17 Smurf characters plus Smoogle were the only ones trapped in time, I decided to leave my version the way I originally conceived it for dramatic purposes relating to Empath, since my fanfiction stories generally revolve around him and his interaction with his fellow Smurfs. The title "Smurfed Behind" comes from the Tim LaHaye and Jerry B. Jenkins series of LEFT BEHIND books which revolve around the Christian teaching of the Rapture and the Tribulation -- though my story has nothing to do with that series beyond dealing with disappearances.

Exactly. And besides, you borrowed one of Raven Child's pics, so I'm giving you permission to borrow my version. But be sure to post it in my art showcase topic.

As to where the original 18 characters from the Season 9 episodes were in "Smurfed Behind: The Departure" (as a bit of trivia):
SNAPPY, BRAINY, and HEFTY were in the mountains looking for a frost fern (same as in "The Smurfs That Time Forgot", with Clumsy replaced by Tracker).
PAPA SMURF and GRANDPA SMURF were overseeing preparations for Empath's birthday party along with Nanny.
HANDY was building a "music-go-round" and finds out that LAZY was sleeping in one of its cars when he starts it up.
GREEDY was busy baking Empath's birthday cake, and keeping his brother Nabby from taking one of the cream-filled muffins he made specially for Empath.
SASSETTE was out in the woods tossing a football around with Nat and Slouchy, while WILD and SMURFETTE watch over them with BABY SMURF beside them.
PAINTER was busy working on a painting when Snappy comes into the village with Crinkles.
GROUCHY was among the Smurfs watching Crinkles overturn tables where the birthday party was going to take place.
CLUMSY was standing behind Tapper watching as the Smurfs attempt to feed Crinkles.
SMOOGLE was standing next to the Smurflings when Papa Smurf was about to open the vortex.
JOKEY watches as other Smurfs get sucked into the vortex after it has been opened.
VANITY appears as one of the faintly visible Smurfs inside the vortex that all the Smurfs are swirling around in.

Problems with continuing this part of the story:
1. Finding useable visual materials to create the characters and story frames.
2. Adapting the original script for "The Smurfs That Time Forgot", "Lost In The Ages", and possibly "Cave Smurfs" to work with additional cast members that were not part of original stories. The part where Papa Smurf, Grandpa Smurf, and Snappy help Crinkles reunite with his parents can still be used without much of any change, as also the part of Clumsy being taken prisoner by Grog the cave child and some of the other Smurfs coming to his rescue. Beyond that, though, it's delving into unfamiliar territory.
