I'm sure everyone is aware by now that the voice actor who voiced Papa Smurf, Don Messick, has been dead since 1997.
Well, if they ever decide to make new Smurf episodes again I know who they could get who could probably do a good job as Papa Smurf. I think Actor John O'Hurley, who has played Elain's boss on Seinfeld, J. Peterman, and also was in those Xerox commercials wearing Greek garb back in 1999, sounds just like Papa Smurf.
Does anyone remember this actor and think that he does not sound like Papa Smurf?

If you can get a sound sample of this actor, maybe we can see for ourselves whether he is.

Okay, I found some through a link on his website. It's some radio commercials he has done. You can get them here at this link. http://www.porcarocommunications.com/radio.htm
Listen to the top four, the GCI radio spots. It's there he's using a dialect that sounds the most like Papa Smurf. In all the others on that page he's using a different dialect that doesn't even sound like him. You should have heard him in the Xerox commercials from the late 90s, in this one Xerox commercial on the radio in 1999 I think he sounded more like Papa Smurf than in the ones for the CGI radio spots. I think with some proper adjusting of dialects he could sound more like a convincing Papa Smurf.
He already does voice work for cartoons according to the IMDB and his website. Here is his main website link. http://www.johnohurley.com/

Take Care, Raven Child.
My thoughts exactly. I first thought of this while hearing one of his Xerox commercials on the radio at work back in summer of 1999. I thought to myself, "Wow, this guy really sounds like Papa Smurf." I wondered if it was the same voice actor and so I looked it up (saw that is was Don Messick and not John) and I've been interested in voice actors ever since.

Don't think his voice sounds "gruff enough" to match that of Don Messick's Papa Smurf voice. But it would be interesting nonetheless.

It's a pretty good choice especially since I can't think of another actor that would be better! Also, if John O'Hurley was actually trying to do a Papa Smurf voice he could probably make himself sound even more like Papa!
You know who's voice I think would be really hard to do... Smurfette's voice (done by Lucille Bliss). Any ideas on who could do her voice?

From his different audio samples it sounds like he can change his voice quite a bit. I think he could adapt to sound very similar to Don Messick's Papa Smurf voice. From all the voice actors I know John seems like the closest we have available.
As for Smurfette's voice, I don't know. Lucille Bliss is still alive, but probably retired. I can't think of anyone off the top of my head who could replace her.

I'd still say Hynden Walch for Smurfette.
