Here's a question...
What gender is Gargamel's cat? Is Azreal a boy or a girl cat? Gargamel and his cat Azrael
And how did Gargamel find / adopt his feline friend?
I hope someone out there has some answers... please tell me anything you know about that bad kitty!
smurfy thanks, Sassette

All I know is that Azrael is a male cat...as for how Gargamel came across his little buddy...If I were to guess, perhaps Azrael adopted him when he was a kitten lost in the forest...(but that is just a guess...like to see who else may have an idea...)

is a male cat, all right.
My guess is that he adopted Azrael from an old wizard or witch who don't want the cat anymore. (I bet that Gargamel really don't like cats that much, it seems, but perhaps he feels Azrael would be quiet, independent and extremely useful for hunting out Smurfs hiding somewhere, so that could be why he took him in!)

is a female that is for sure.
Who else but a female would stick by gargamel. Plus she's the only real woman in his life and that makes them like husband and wife. She is like the long suffering wife with the sad resignation in her voice going along with gargamel's ill-fated plans.
Azrael is a female feline!

Azrael gets a girl friend in the episode " Brainy Smurf, Friend to all the animals" *waves to smurfie *
Would make him male. Remember TV wasn't as enlighted back then as it is today before anyone surgests any other possibilities ![[Razz]](tongue.gif)

Noooooo! Azrael is definitely a MALE! In older translations it's "Uriel". He's named after the Archangel (in the early translation the angel of death)

"Enlightened"? Or just plain "perverted" -- like some folks' interpretation of Clumsy saying to Brainy that he loves him in one of the episodes? King David in his Song of the Bow in 2nd Samuel said about his best friend Jonathan that his love was "wonderful, passing the love of women" -- are we to suggest from that that King David and Jonathan were homosexuals?
On the same note, Peyo left something rather dangerous in the "Romeo & Smurfette" story by having Papa Smurf be as amorously attracted to Smurfette as the rest of his "little Smurfs" -- something that wasn't followed up on in any of the following episodes, but still needed some addressing nevertheless. IMO, such relations between the opposite sexes SHOULD be among those who are at least within the same generation of each other.

There seems to be a huge case of 'male ego' here...just because a male says he loves another male should not suggest that they are homosextuals. My husband's best friend admitted that he loved Derek, but mostly in a brotherly comment. In relation, Clumsy or even King David for this matter, saying they love another male would only suggest that they are stating the fact they look at each other as brothers not lovers.
Anyway, that is my big fat opinion...I'm sort of in a mood this week
Take Care everone! Raven Child.
P.S. Gargamel's cat is a male...Gargamel even said so himself in an episode...just can't remember which one...I think it is in one that I downloaded or recorded last summer...(It might even be the episode "Brainy Smurf: Friend to all the Animals).

Bump I've always assumed Azrael was a male. I don't know why. Eventually I learned that he was named after the archangel of death, so that kind of supports my assumption.
How this duo met is unknown, but my guess is when Azrael was a lost kitten, he followed Gargamel home and adopted him. Gargamel decided to let Azrael stay with him to catch mice (and eventually hunt Smurfs). You gotta admire how Azrael has tolerated Gargamel over the years, though. That is a true loyal pet right there.

That's interesting. I never knew the meaning behind his name.

azrael must be a boy but in smurf colored glasses smurfette thinks azrael is pretty with the pink glasses on. Azrael was probably aboned in the forest or something.

I must weigh in on this topic. Azrael is not clearly a male or female. I cannot recall them ever definitively stating one way or the other.
For example, Gargamel never calls Azrael a he or she - just his "mangy cat", etc.
In response to Brainy's Babe, in the episode "Brainy Smurf, Friend To All The Animals", Natural Smurfling says: quote: It's only a wildcat Brainy, It doesn't know any better
This is in reference to Azrael's new cat friend. We never find out if the wildcat is a girl or a boy. Gargamel then says about Azrael:
quote: My cat is mangy, and full of fleas I know, but it's all I've got.
Notice the use of the pronoun "it". I think that they purposefully do not acknowledge Azrael's gender.
I think I will now listen more closely when watching other episodes to hear if a "he" or "she" is ever said.

Sincerely I've never stopped to think about Azrael's gender before. But I think it's really a male cat, for: 1. In Smurf cartoons - independent of versions - Gargamel never gave the impression that Azrael could be a she-cat. In Brazilian version, for example, he always addessed him as "gato estúpido" - "stupid cat" - and not "gata estúpida". "Gata" is the name given to a female cat in Portuguese. 2.I had once entered Dupuis Editions ( http://www.dupuis.com/ ) and found some images of Smurf albuns. Here's an image of "A La Smurf Soup", in the French original: "Stupid cat! Come here for I'll skin you alive!" If Azrael were a female, he would say "chatte" - a female cat. ![[Azrael]](graemlins/azrael.gif)

Amazing work Squeaky!
I feel privileged to have read your analysis. It is intriguing to think about the Smurfs in Portuguese and French.
Thinking about this further, I know that the grammatical gender for "cat" in French is male. So to complicate things, the quote from Gargamel may not be referring to a "cat that is a male", but just to the word "cat" (which is by default male in terms of grammatical gender in French).
Grammatical gender doesn't really exist in English, and it seems that the writers of the Smurfs episodes went out of their way to use a "neuter" when describing Azrael ("it", "my cat", "Azrael" as opposed to "he" or "she" pronouns).
I'll follow your example Squeaky and look into this more!

Squeaky Smurf, that was such a good idea to think of how The Smurfs are presented in other languages - specifically how they say "cat" (the male or female version). I'm impressed with your research - thanks so much for your insight!!!
Binky, it does seem that they go out of their way to not specifically call Azrael a boy or a girl (in the English version). Gargamel never says, "he's a stupid cat" but will always say, "stupid cat" or call Azrael an "it".
Poor Azrael... being called an "it" - but I guess Gargamel has called Azrael far worse than that! I'm trying to think what all he has called Azrael...
bone-headed nincompoop flea-ridden fuzzbrain free-loading furball
... and that's just from the the episode, "Brainy Smurf, Friend to All The Animals"! ![[Gargamel]](graemlins/gargamel.gif)

Thanks, Binky and Sassette! The fact is that languages of Latin origin are generally not as practical as English. And that's right, I forgot the "gentle words" Gargamel use to "praise" Azrael... Sometimes a cat's life might be even worse than a dog's one! ![[Big Grin]](biggrin.gif)
