I wonder if it would have looked as bad as the Atari 2600 version.

I never understood why people bought the Intellivision after the ColecoVision came out. There was no comparison. The Atari Smurfs looked like little square blocks - I'm sure the Intellivision Smurfs would have been pretty much the same.

Not that the Coleco Smurfs was a graphical delight, but at least you could tell what was what.

That's funny -- I thought Coleco did an excellent job on the Atari 2600 Smurf's graphics, all things considering. Given the original hand-drawn depictions of what its game screen(s) would look like (as in some of the promo posters and the box that the Expansion Module #1 for the ColecoVision came in), I was expecting it to disappoint when I got it for my 15th birthday in 1983. Fortunately, that was not the case!

I wasn't so happy with the Expansion Module #1 AKA the Atari 2600 module for the ColecoVision. I received it as a Christmas gift and I thought it was broken because the graphics and sound were so poor. I had only played ColecoVision games and never realized the Atari was so primitive. When I showed my parents the screen (Pac-Man, incidently), we agreed that it must be broken and so I returned it to the store the next day for a refund.

I didn't give up on the Expansion Modules, though. The next Christmas I received Expansion Module #3, AKA the ADAM computer, and anxiously awaited the release of Super Smurf Rescue in Gargamel's Castle. I'm still waiting...
