Q: Why is Empath made "the only begotten son of Papa Smurf" in that story?
A: Originally, as the story was conceived in 1986, Empath was meant to be the first of two sons of Papa Smurf: himself and Brainy. However, as far as reconciling how Papa Smurf's marriage to Empath's mother in that story would fall apart due to what Papa Smurf had done with Empath, it would be difficult to answer how Brainy would come forth from that marriage as well unless Brainy were to be born before Empath, which was something I didn't want to do (Empath was meant to be the older brother). Yet I did want to keep Empath and Brainy as brothers, so in the story that was finally developed in 1993 and finished in 2000, they would have the same mother, but only Empath would have Papa Smurf as his biological father. Anyway, this wasn't meant for Empath to be a direct analog to Jesus Christ in any sense, apart from the forced role of a "messianic deliverer" of sorts that Empath's fellow Smurfs put upon him at his coming home for good on his 150th birthday.
