Dear experts,

I am wondering, why Papa Smurf has red pans and a red head whereas all other smurfs are white and blue? Is there a clear reasen for that? Thanks, Keith

Well, do you think Papa would look good in hot pink? Of course not!

Somehow he's got to stand out among 100 white-hatted Smurfs.

Hi Keith,

I like Vic's answer a lot (and xSmurfettex's makes sense too).

I looked up a few color symbolism charts to see if there was anything I could add. Apparently, red stands for: excitement, energy, passion, desire, strength, power, heat, love and all things intense and passionate. So far so good.

About.com says that red represents power, hence the red power tie for business people and the red carpet for celebrities and VIPs. Red can be used to grab attention and to get people to take action. People who wear red don't want to blend into the background.

Finally, the Bolsheviks (in Russia, 1917) used a red flag when they overthrew the Tsar. Subsequently, the color red became associated with Communism. What? Is Papa the leader of a conspiracy to indoctrinate young malleable minds? Find out here!

From a religious viewpoint, from what I can see in certain examples of Holy Scripture, the red suit can represent a blood covering that Papa Smurf must wear in order as some sort of priest/mediator to keep "his little Smurfs" pure through their wearing white as a symbol of innocence and purity from evil.
