 Applause Smurfs
Today is a sad day because the Chairman & CEO of Applause LLC, Robert Solomon, has died.
Solomon was personally responsible for securing many of Wallace Berrie & Co.'s most lucrative licensing rights, including the Smurfs, Cabbage Patch Kids, Sesame Street and E.T.
Many of us remember Wallace Berrie & Co. as the company that brought the Smurfs to the North American marketplace in the 1970s. (In 1982, Wallace Berrie & Co. bought Applause Inc., and also adopted the Applause Inc. company name.) I have many fond memories of seeing the "Wallace Berrie & Co." name so this is quite sad, especially considering Robert Solomon is the man people hoped would turn around the struggling company, which this year is celebrating its 25th anniversary at the same time as facing eviction from its corporate headquarters.

Bob Soloman was a mean, narcisistic, egotistical cocain addict that was destined to self destruct after years of damaging those around him - from co-workers to wives.

Had Applause been bought by Wallace Berrie & Co. then? I have some Applause pencils and I only heard of WB & Co. when I joined Bluebuddies.

Hi Squeaky! I have lots of loot from Wallace Berry too, though some of it is showing its age!! I did some research on WB & Co. Wallace Berrie bought Applause in 1982 and the whole WB& Co changed its name to Applause in 1987. The company is now called Russ Berrie, or Russ!

Even if that was the case. It's not good to speak ill will of the dead.

I must agree with swarlock.
It is a shame that his death still causes acrimony, satchmo. Despite everything, he still brought happiness to people through his work. He spread smurfiness around the world and I for one am grateful for that. May he rest in peace.

In 1979, the Smurfs were new to the United States. Wallace Berrie & Co. Inc. published a pamphlet explaining who and what the Smurfs are, called "The Smurf Story":
Far, far away in a land where houses are shaped like mushrooms, live 100 tiny blue people called Smurfs. Some scholars think that Smurfs dropped out of mushrooms, while others are sure they just smurfed out of nowhere. No one knows for sure except the Smurfs themselves...and even wise old Papa Smurf, their white-bearded leader, isn't telling. Suffice to say that all by themselves the Smurfs built a wondrous village deep in the forest run on happiness, or as they call it "Smurfiness".
It's not likely that you'll find your way to the Smurf Village. The only way to get there is to be guided by a Smurf himself...and they're usually too busy for that. When they're not busy working or playing, they're pretty smurfin'-busy thinking about something to be busy with! It's a lively life for people only 3 apples tall, but the Smurfs wouldn't have it any other way.
Smurfs are friendly, loyal and kind to each other except when they're competing for the friendship of the only woman in town, the Smurfette. Who can blame them...there's nothing like dancing in the arms of a lovely Smurfette!
Smurfs are always on the lookout for new friends to have fun with. They're good listeners, great companions, and energetic playmates. Step into the wonderful world of Smurfs...You've got a friend!!
