It would be smurfy if the new movie had Johan and Peewit. What if it had characters like Homnibus or king Gerard. Maybe the smurflings would be cool. OMG, what if Marina is in this one. That would be so sweet. But then again, it is a very slim chance. (Oh, darn. I'm sounding like Flighty)
Handy likes Marina! Handy likes Marina!

I have to be patient if any of the characters mentioned by Jokey Smurf22 may or may not be in "The Smurfs 2", and if Montreal have to do with the modern setting just like New York City.

I read about it in Smurfs: A Celebration and recently bought and read the PaperCutz Graphic Novel, but I haven't tracked down the original cartoon film on DVD yet. Wasn't there a Hanna-Barbera episode version of Smurfs and the Magic flute?

"The Smurfs And The Magic Flute" was ONLY an animated movie made by Belvision Studios in 1976. It was NEVER made into a cartoon show episode.

Indeed. The Smurfs and the Magic Flute was an animation of the Johan et PIrlouit comic of the same name. It was the first time the Smurfs (as we know them) came to being. Prior to that comic, no one knew about them.
I'm still a fan of the film, perhaps more now than before. Simply because it was Peyo's work. He had the influence on the production and story. As did Yvan Deleporte. I had the opportunity to listen to the original Belgian soundtrack, and Peewit's singing is funnier than the English dub. Johan is a bit more hard lined, which is how he is in the comic. Peewit provides comedic effect and Johan is the more serious one.
I would love to see a second Smurf movie in the setting of the Middle Ages. Heck, I'd love to see Johan and Peewit too, but I'm not sure if that is going to happen.
One can hope.

Something I like about the original French version is how Peewit in the comics is supposed to be a dwarf (a stunted human), not a child as depicted in the cartoon series. His French voice depicted him as a dwarf, while his English voices (there are at least two English versions) depicted him as a normal adult.
I loved the performers' singing in the original French as it fits more to the time period of the film than the English versions.

Montreal is a beautiful place, wonderful filming location. Yes, they wouldn't make a movie about smurfs going to Canada. Canada isn't thought of as a glamourous place, and there aren't many Hollywood pictures about it. So, it probably is a filming location, playing the part of Europe/Belgium. Europe is very far away from their offices, but Canada is their friendly upstairs neighbour. The filmmakers and crew cans fly back-and-forth between Montreal and Los Angeles.
If the smurfs, in the story, go outside to Belgium, which they probably will, the crew should probably film parts in Belgium, for it's landmarks etc. But only historic landmarks, because it would be set in an Medieval Flanders. That would be a fine film, and the Belgique tourism industry will be very glad! But if it's set in a generic abstract Medieval Europe setting, Montreal would be indeed a good place to film.

I was originally assuming that Peewit was a dwarf.
By the way, I just got the Imavision release of The Smurfs And The Magic Flute, and it has a totally different English dub where even the songs have different lyrics, and the new voices ranged from passable to terrible.

I thought so, I even meant that in my Smurf fanfic, when Brainy and Papa Smurf commented about Tattoo and meant Peewit.

ARRRRGGGH...TIME TRAVEL AGAIN!!! You might as well give them a DeLorean that goes 88 MPH, if you know what I mean!
But what's with the cartoon Smurfs appearing below Smurfs 2? I wonder what else Sony is hinting at?

I kinda wish that Smurfs 2 movie could be tradtionally animated, like the cartoon or comics.
I tranferred my video copy of The Smurfs and the Magic Flute to DVD.
