Neil Patrick Harris, Hank Azaria, and Jayma Mays at New York Smurfs Week
Neil Patrick Harris, Hank Azaria and Jayma Mays have turned New York City blue to mark the opening of their new live action movie The Smurfs.
The actors kicked off Smurfs Week NYC, a series of events centred around the family comedy, in the Big Apple on Sunday by walking the "blue" carpet with co-stars Katy Perry and Sofia Vergara at the film's world premiere.
They continued the celebrations on Monday morning when Harris, Azaria and Mays opened Smurf Village in Central Park, a themed kids' area complete with colorful 10-foot tall mushroom houses and a 40-foot tall inflatable Smurf.
Harris later switched on the lights at the top of the Empire State Building, which shone bright blue.
Smurfs Week, created in partnership with the New York tourism board, is set to continue with events at famed toy store Fao Schwarz, where part of the movie was filmed, and at the Brooklyn Children's Museum.
The Smurfs film, based on fictional blue characters created by Belgian cartoonist Peyo, opens across the U.S. later this week.

The Description of the Smurfulator
"The filmmakers envisioned that Gargamel creates the Smurfulator - a sort of Rube Goldberg machine* - out of pieces of old junk he finds in the basement ("dungeon") of Belvedere Castle in Central Park. Its purpose is to extract the magical essence of the Smurfs, and transform that essence into a magical blue liquid that Gargamel can use to make his own magic much more powerful."
"Once Gargamel has more power, he uses magic to transform his original Smurfulator into a much more elaborate machine that includes conveyor belts, a tesla coil, hydralics, cages, and a tiny little chair into which essence-giving Smurfs would be strapped."
"Smurfs get strapped into the tiny chair and go through a series of 'stations' where their essence is extracted in various ways. First, an electronic device makes them sweat, and the machine collects their sweat; next, chopped onion vapors are blasted into their eyes, and the machine collects their tears. They then go through a 'Popcorn' exfoliator machine, which collects their dry skin, and finally into the last station where the Tesla coil makes them sweat a little bit more. All the Smurf essence goes through a 'distillery', and the final product comes out of a faucet, ripe for use in Gargamel's wand and ring."
* A Rube Goldberg machine, device, or apparatus is a deliberately-over-engineered machine (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Machine) that performs a very simple task in a very complex fashion, usually including a chain reaction.
