A little Easter gift for you all:
The Smurfs and the Lost Duckling*
By: Peyo Scenery: Matagne
THE CAROUSEL COLLECTION

Do you know the land of the Smurfs? It's located very far, far from here, in the heart of a large forest, in which there's a village where the houses are mushroom-shaped. Its inhabitants, who call themselves the Smurfs, are small and blue-skinned, being leaded by Papa Smurf, who's dressed in red and wears a nice white beard.
* I preferred to translate the title like this, instead of The Smurfs' Duckling .

Although all the Smurfs are alike, each one of them has a certain characteristic: There's Greedy Smurf, who loves big cakes with lots of cream; Vanity Smurf, who thinks he's very gorgeous and is always looking at himself in a mirror; Lazy Smurf, who's been sleeping all the time; Brainy Smurf, who always wishes to lecture the other Smurfs; Jokey Smurf, who can't help playing tricks on everysmurf; Harmony Smurf, who unfortunately plays his trumpet very badly; Grouchy Smurf, who never likes anything at all; And there are even more others, for in all there’s in all a hundred Smurfs in the village.

One day when Greedy and Brainy Smurfs were walking in the forest searching for walnuts, they discovered a strange package, wrapped in a white (?) cloth. Very intrigued, they went forward; but at this moment the package began to move, making them back off, a little afraid. On the other hand, both were also curious to find out what kind of thing could be in that package. So, the two Smurfs approached it quite slowly without making any noise, and finally opened it.
(?) In the text: a white cloth. But in the drawing: a green checked one! ![[Confused]](confused.gif)

Inside the package, there was a wiggling newborn baby duck. - How did this little duck get lost in the heart of the forest?- asked Greedy - And what shall we do with him now? - We'll take him back to his mom - decreed Brainy - Because one always must take little lost ducks to their moms. Moreover, Papa Smurf always says that... - But, - Greedy interrupted him - where’s his mum, after all, and how shall we find her in this large forest? My smurfness, you can only say nonsense! - How dare you!! - Brainy exclaimed - What you're saying is unfair, for I've never said nonsense! And besides, Papa Smurf always says so, and..." - That's not true! - Greedy shouted - You know what? You're just a blockhead! So they started to quarrel for real; but at this moment the little duck began to cry, making them stop at once and realize to take him to the village.

All the Smurfs got pretty surprised on seeing their two fellows with a baby duck barely born. - We found him in the forest, so we'll accommodate him among us - Brainy explained. - And I'll give him a little piece of my rum cake - added Greedy. - Aw, he's almost as pretty as me! - opined Vanity. - I'll play him a little aria for trumpet - offered Harmony. - And I promise I won't play any tricks on him - Jokey swore solemnly. (By the way, such a great sacrifice for him... ) Black Smurf said nothing, otherwise he wasn't even in the village that very moment. Yet Papa Smurf determined: - We need to find this little duck's mom. - Ah, you see? You see? I've told you so! - Brainy exclaimed, triumphant. But nosmurf paid attention, since all of them were pushing each other to admire the cute duckling.

The baby duck started to walk around the village. Greedy Smurf was pretty afraid the little one would spill his reserve of hazelnuts and beechnuts, but in fact the only accident happened when the duckling unintentionally crushed Harmony's trumpet. Seeing that, the Smurfs got secretly satisfied, thinking they wouldn't hear any false notes again; but this didn't last long, for Harmony said at once: - Oh, this doesn't matter; I still have my slide trombone... All of a sudden the little duck headed for the Smurf lake, beginning to swim. Very worried, the Smurfs wondered whether a young duckling wouldn't risk getting drowned. But Papa Smurf reassured them, telling not to be afraid. Grouchy, who had said nothing at all so far, exclaimed: - Good to know! For I HATE being afraid. The Smurf leader proceeded: - There's only one thing to do to return this duckling to his mother: we must go and warn the storks.

Indeed, for in countries close to the Smurfs' storks have the mission of bringing newborn babies to their animal parents. So, Papa Smurf guessed at once the duckling had been lost by a stork passing over a forest. He also asked for some volunteers to warn the storks about the find; but he soon changed his mind choosing Greedy and Brainy, since they were the ones that found the baby duck at first. Thus, Brainy and Greedy made their way to the dwelling of the storks. After a very long journey during which they quarrelled a lot - mostly because Greedy wanted to "make a little stop" to eat wild berries all the time, and Brainy in turn (and as usual) realized to lecture him - the two Smurfs at last reached the storks' nest, placed on the chimney of a farm. They heard a stork moaning (yes, for the Smurfs understand the language of the animals perfectly): - Poor, poor me! Dear me... I'm getting so old that I can't see well as before, for on flying over the forest to take a newborn duckling to Mother Duck, the package fell... I flew for hours over the forest hoping to find him, but no avail! Oh, dear me!

It was at this point the two Smurfs approached her, telling they had found the baby duck and that he was very fine. Hearing this, the stork got so happy that she began to clap her beak, but with so much joy that the Smurfs were almost - although unintentionally - swallowed. So, she hoisted them on her back quickly and let herself be guided to the village. Once there, she took back the duckling - which was still swimming in the pond - wrapped him gently in a white stuff and departed, taking together Greedy and Brainy, who had obtained permission to make a new trip to attend the first meeting of the duck and her child. And also - it must be said that - to ensure the old stork wouldn't let drop her precious burden again. Carrying the two Smurfs and the baby duck, the stork flew over the forest, then the high mountains, making the Smurfs get very delighted to admire their country from so high. Yet the duckling was asleep in his soft bunk.

They finally reached the edge of a pond, where a duck was very sad for not seeing his son coming yet. Then, on seeing the stork land, she started to give several elated "quacks" and rushed to hold her little one under her wing. When the mother duck learned of the Smurfs' valuable contribution to find her child, she thanked them very much, promising to visit them at a later time, when the duckling is able to fly. And at sunset the stork set out to take the two Smurfs back to their village. - I hope heartily there shall be somesmurf good to eat on the way home - commented Greedy. And no, we won't repeat what Brainy replied because he always talks too much and says very bothersome remarks.
