The EMPATH: THE LUCKIEST SMURF story series puts their births around 150 years prior to the present time of most of their adventures. In one of my "Reporter's Inside Stories", Hefty reveals that he was the firstborn among his contemporaries while Brainy was the last. Also in those stories, Hefty and Handy were born twins, with Hefty being the firstborn of the two, as a sort of echo to the biblical Genesis story of Esau and Jacob.
