Swoofs weren't blue, they were green...at least the ones in the cartoon show episodes are.

I know what colour Swoofs are, I was just making a reference to 'A Mere Truffle' where Tracker loses his memory and can't remember who the Smurfs are. So I was saying that I like the episodes that have the Smurfs in (all of them) as I can't pick a favourite.
But if I did have to pick a favourite, it would be The Master Smurf, S-shivering S-smurfs or For The Love Of Gargamel (even if Tracker was a bit mean to Gargy in that episode)

If it weren't bad enough to have the series end with them being trapped in a time-travelling limbo, one could sense idea exhaustion also in the sense that they had to create duplicates of Gargamel in the various time eras that the Smurfs ended up visiting. I could just imagine the Smurfs finding themselves in Israel circa 30-33 AD witnessing Jesus Christ doing His earthly ministry and one of His disciples, Judas Iscariot, being portrayed as a Gargamel duplicate in that time era, if you get what I mean.
The quote goes back to 2004, but I must agree that Hanna-Barbera and NBC really jumped the shark with Season 9. The time-traveling template, probably inspired by the recently launched drama "Quantum Leap", pretty much killed the show. It would have been better for NBC to cancel the show after Season 8 when it was still on top.
In the end NBC got its way in dropping all cartoons in favor of a Saturday "Today" show (doing well these days as "Weekend Today"), then getting out of kidvid altogether.

That screenshot may be actually from the opening credits to Season 2, which introduced the words to the theme song. Gargamel trips over himself, falls down slow-motion anime style, and is tied down with Azrael as the Smurfs laugh at giving them what for.

My all-time favorite episode is "Squeaky" because of how they dealt with a subject as serious as death and bereavement. That episode may have won the series the Emmy that year (1983) for Best Children's Series.

I think I have three favorite episodes.
The Magnifying Mixture: for its sheer slapstick value.
The Astrosmurf: for the charming character of Dreamy. Plus, how far would you go to make someone's dream come true?
Bewitched, Bothered, And Besmurfed: for that line from Hefty: "This is terrible. Not only is Greedy a fiddle, but he's out of tune!"

A certain time ago, I meant some Smurf episodes,
The Magic Egg The Astrosmurf King Smurf Smurf Colored-Glasses" - chiefly due to the scene when Smurfette, wearing the glasses Handy had given her, falls for "handsome" Gargy. I love it! The Smurfette Jokey's Medicine Bewitched, Bothered and Besmurfed Soup a La Smurf Smurfette's Dancing Shoes Smurphony in C The Hundredth Smurf
And now I want to include more:
Paradise Smurfed The Magical Meanie All That Glitters Isn't Smurf Romeo and Smurfette X The Fake Smurf The Smurf's Apprentice The Smurfs and The Money-Tree Vanity Fare The Fountain of Smurf The Magnifying Mixture Dreamy's Nightmare Gargamel the Generous The Purple Smurfs
This to mean the ones from Season #1. ![[Wink]](wink.gif)

Smurfette's self-titled debut episode from the series premiere on NBC is also a personal favorite. Lucille Bliss finally landed a role that defined her career and that she adored more than any other.
Hanna-Barbera president Joseph Barbera fought hard with NBC brass to include Smurfette in the show to appeal to the young girls in the audience. He got his way, and the rest is history.
The animation was typical H-B bad, as if Hackus was doing all the drawings (LOL), but only because the studio had just begun production. But you could tell right away from the character design, backgrounds and music that there was something different about this new show. I first thought that rival studios Filmation or Marvel Productions did the series because those studios tended to produce better content. So I was just totally shocked as an 11-year-old to see "A Hanna-Barbera Production" in the end credits. Probably one of H-B's all-time best series.

I remember that story arc from the original series, a very touching and emotional one as I remember. Too bad Hanna-Barbera never went past those two episodes with the little pegasus. Your mention of that episode gave me a new fan comic idea:
Farewell, Blue Eyes: It's been a while since Smurfette has seen the flying horse the other Smurfs think is an imaginary friend, but whom Papa, Grandpa and Nanny encourage to keep believing in. She calls to see him one last time, and when the two take off for a flyover of the forest, Vexy thinks Smurfette is being blown away by a strong wind and tries to rescue her best friend. Blue Eyes (invisible to Vexy) gets violently lassoed, injuring one of his wings and hurtling him to the ground. His cover is blown as well, appearing to everyone and everything. Vexy "rescues" Smurfette, but Blue Eyes is almost killed.
Finally, all the Smurfs believe Smurfette as Blue Eyes is nursed back to health in the village. But Vexy is guilty and depressed because her hot temper and impulsive actions nearly killed an innocent party. Long story short, Blue Eyes recovers, her mom flies down to reunite with him, Vexy is forgiven, and both Smurfettes are given a joyous final ride on Blue Eyes over the forest before he disappears for good.
As Blue Eyes and his mom fly back into the clouds and disappear forever, the familiar Blue Eyes incantation comes to Smurfette's mind, with a change on the last line: "Blue Eyes, Blue Eyes, I love you."
What do you think? I am seeking to go back to school to study creative writing, and story ideas like this one come instantly to me. ![[Smile]](smile.gif)

That last change to Smurfette's chant is touching. Provided the rest of the story draws the reader into it, this final line should be a tearjerker. Hope to see this in comic form soon. ![[Smile]](smile.gif)

Thanks for the reply, Photographer! I've been developing the story further while jogging this afternoon (my ideas often come while exercising), and here's how it fills out:
For starters, I'm renaming it Ol' Blue Eyes is Back. The original title just sounded too depressing to me. Smurfette and Vexy's friendship are strained because the former blames the latter for almost killing Blue Eyes with her wild rescue act. Actually, only one of his wings was strained, and landing in a thick flower bed softened his fall so he's actually okay; he just can't fly.
Papa, Nanny and even Blue Eyes himself urge Smurfette not to be so hard on her best friend because she didn't know what was really going on, and it was only done out of protection. Smurfette finally forgives Vexy, who is even allowed to ride the earthbound Blue Eyes as a sign of that reconciliation.
The little horsey is spotted and caught along with the girls by Gargamel, who sees dollar signs (or euros or bitcoins or whatever) in displaying Blue Eyes in a roadside freakshow. In that show, Gargy tries to wow the disinterested crowds with sleight-of-hand tricks and magic spells, including a starfire spell that ignites a large torchstick... only to sputter out just two seconds later. "B-B-But it worked in Paris," Gargamel embarrassingly explains, "Really, it knocked 'em dead in Paris!" (a nod to the movie)
When Blue Eyes and his mom are about to fly home, Smurfette is naturally in pieces over never seeing the little pony again. But mom hints that might not necessarily be true: now that Vexy and all the other Smurfs believe in the flying horses' existence, each and every one of them now has the chance to see Blue Eyes three more times as he is now growing up... and Smurfette just might be able to see it with them. The idea is that because Smurfette continued to believe the truth in spite of teasing and opposition, the other Smurfs came around and now this special and secret gift is for all the Smurfs to share, enjoy and love.
I also plan to do an extreme smurfover on little Blue Eyes. Instead of the realistic, well-groomed look he had in the TV show, I plan to draw him a little more cartoony--basically a lot cuter.
Going forward, this fanfic idea will be on its own thread since this one is really just for pictures.

"The Smurflings" were probably Hanna-Barbera's idea rather than Peyo's. I grew up watching the series on NBC back in the 80's, and in the summer of 1985 NBC was running a series of teaser ads leading up to the Season 5 premiere that September in which the Smurfs were preparing a welcome party for some new arrivals that "would make the Smurfs better than ever". The Smurflings and Puppy were those arrivals.
At the time "The Smurfs" was far and away the most popular program on American children's television. Because it was on a commercial network, Hanna-Barbera and NBC added new Smurf characters every season to keep the kiddies watching, the ratings high and the advertising dollars rolling in.
Presumably the Smurflings were added so that children could have kid Smurfs they could relate to. But commercial kidvid is a ruthless beast, and the pressure to stay competitive finally killed off the show when NBC made Hanna-Barbera scrap the familiar storyline for the time-travel format, which IMO was a horrible idea and which many Smurf fans resent to this day.

Well, it's been a while since I've watched them...I just got back with my childhood favorite last year because I had been grieving over losing a very close friend-whom also loved the Smurfs. My favorite episode, though, would be "The Goblin of Boulder Woods" for multiple reasons.

Watching the show has mostly been limited to the US DVD releases, that said, Squeaky, Smurf Van Winkle, and The Smurfette stand out for me.
Squeaky, surprised it handled the serious topic of death. It started out so sweetly with Smurfette nursing a mouse back to health, then I felt bad for her when Squeaky passed away. Very happy with how the episode ended with the Smurfs saving Smurfette and Jokey giving an actual gift.
Smurf Van Winkle was a fun one. The smurfs not only played a prank on Lazy, it was like playing a prank on me as well. I really thought they were old, and when they turned into Smurflings, I just bursted out laughing once I realized what they did.
The Smurfette, really never knew about her origins until this episode. I was watching this one before seeing The Lost Village since the movie was about Smurfette. It even made me get the Papercutz book of the same story, to see what the original comic was about.

I'm going to add Smurf Colored Glasses to my rather small, but growing, list of favorite episodes.
Having the DVD on tonight reminded me of this one. Can't help but laugh how Smurfette looks at Gargamel and Azrael with the glasses on. Also, love that ending scene where Handy thinks Smurfette is going to hit him, but gives him a kiss. That scene was too cute!
