My Season 1 DVD came this morning from Amazon, and I am quite a bit annoyed at how it was delivered. When I opened it up some of the discs had come loose inside the box, and while the rest are fine, it has left Disc 3 with some scratches! Ironically, that one is the Brainy Smurf disc - he always had the worst luck, doesn't he? It plays OK, but it still annoys me that I buy something brand new and it doesn't come in 100% new condition.
Anyway, onto the set, I've had a quick look at it and it's looking pretty smurfy! Like the international sets, the episodes are fully uncut and remastered, and on the Blu-ray player they upscale pretty well. However, they don't have the original opening sequence featured on the Region 1 DVD (I had the Season 1 Part 1 DVD from the US). It's the same opening but with different music and episode title cards. I am guessing the episodes are exactly the same as the ones featured on the Australian DVDs. The episodes are also better put together here than in the USA DVD, each episode is put together to run for 20 minutes each, whether it's one story or two. The Region 1 DVD seemed to be all over the place.
It also comes with a couple of booklets inside, one listing all the episodes in the season and one for the characters. The character guide also includes Baby Smurf, Wild Smurf and the Smurflings, perhaps suggesting that Arrow Films and Fabulous Films are planning to release all 9 seasons over time. I have taken some pictures of the set if anyone was interested in seeing what it looked like.
Front cover (Comes with cardboard sleeve, paper sleeve is the same inside):
Back cover:
Discs 1 and 2:
Discs 3 and 4:
Episode Guide:
Character Guide:

SMURFAROO! Thanks for sharing the pictures and description... I felt like I was opening it up right along with you!
So typical that the Brainy Disc had the bad luck. I've had that happen to me once when I bought a new DVD - one of the discs had slipped from the holder. I think it's cool that they also included the booklets... they aren't included in the NTSC Smurf DVDs. I agree with you that it sounds like they will probably release the 9 seasons... especially if they're taking the time to "introduce" the smurflings characters etc. I really love that picture of the Smurf on the front of that Character Guide!
Again - thanks so much for sharing!!! ![[Big Grin]](biggrin.gif)

No problem, Sassette, even though there is now a problem for me! I started watching the set, but began with Disc 3 as I wanted to check that it really did work properly. And unfortunately, it doesn't! About 16 minutes into Smurfette's Dancing Shoes (which is the first episode on that disc), the disc freezes, jumps and glitches, and eventually gives up. And I was playing it in my Blu-ray player, which must have a strong laser since it needs to support HD playback, so the scratches were definitely worse than I thought. Pictured below is a photo of the play side of the disc, it's not 100% clear but I think you can clearly see part of the damage that was caused from the disc coming loose inside. Consequently I am now going to have to send it back to Amazon.

YEAH!! The case is awesome looking Rocker Smurf!!. So cool!!!!
What's the Character Guide Booklet and episode guide like inside?
Bad luck about the scratched disc. Why can't they make cases that actually keep the disc in? I've had this happen to me too!

The booklets are really nice and colourful, but both of them have problems. The episode guide gives descriptions which practically spoil most of them, while the character guide booklet gives some nice bios of the characters, but has its mistakes. It lists both Greedy and Cook Smurf separately, when they were both combined into the same character in the cartoon. Also the booklet's image of Cook Smurf is actually Greedy. And where it describes a smurf that was not actually in the show, it fails to mention one that was! The booklet leaves out Tailor Smurf, who I thought was one of the more recurring characters in the series.

Thanks for the UK Smurfs DVD,rocker smurf! The packaging and design is brilliant box art i mean. This one is better than The US DVD! Ouch! i got some scratches! (laugh) I always have a bad luck. No news for US DVD so far... (sigh) if they didn't turn it to volume discs It would be better... Well it's awful that your DVD get scratches right off the box.

I now have a fully working replacement copy of the set, and thought I'd post a short review.
Firstly, the episodes are presented in a mostly wonderful and lovingly Smurfy fashion. They are fully remastered like the USA DVDs were, however I noticed on my copy that The Smurf Apprentice did cut some scenes out, and Vanity Fair has not been remastered at all. Maybe an accidental error perhaps, but it didn't really bother me too much. There is also the audio sync error with the Magnifying Mixture, which hasn't been changed. But all in all, it's generally a very impressive set. Also, the episode order is much better. The first episode in the set is "The Smurfette", which makes sense and feels like it was the first episode made (some of the character's voices sound a little different to what they sound like for the rest of the series).
Now onto the extras. There isn't much to offer, but what is featured was worth watching. There is a set of character biographies to read on the disc, though they are identical to the ones featured in the character booklet. There is also a 12 minute long feature explaining the history of the Smurfs, where text scrolls from bottom to top of the screen for the viewer to read. And finally, the "I Smurf the Smurfs" documentary from the Region 1 DVDs is included. I hadn't seen it before and found it very interesting to watch.
Overall it's not absosmurfly flawless, but it's as smurfy as a Smurfs DVD set can get, and smurfs the USA DVDs to shame. Roll on September 6th, where the UK gets the second season, (however it will not include the Johan and Peewit episodes, but they were never that good anyway) and The Smurfs and the Magic Flute movie.

Smurfy news for UK smurf fans! The Smurfs and the Magic Flute has had its release date pushed back from September 6th to October 4th, but despite this, it is now available to order on Blu-ray! So if anyone has an HDTV and Blu-ray player or PS3, here is a chance to see our true blue friends in high "smurf-inition".
Smurfs and the Magic Flute Blu-Ray
I have cancelled my DVD order in favour of this, and when I receive it I will post a review, including info about its region coding. If the Blu-ray disc turns out to be region free, then that means it will work on any player around the world.

Thanks Sassette! You can expect to see two full reviews from me next week, as my copy of The Smurfs and the Magic Flute has been dispatched. I have viewed Disc 1 and so far it is looking smurferiffic! Great job restoring the episodes, and since the Magic Flute is on Blu-ray, I look forward to seeing how well the transfer to 1080p high smurf-inition has been done!

Haven't had a chance to watch it yet, but look what came through my letterbox this morning, two days before it's meant to be released!
Front cover:
Back cover:
Disc:
Advert for the Season 1 and 2 DVDs, on the inside of the sleeve:
Might watch it later on and write my review on the quality. I can confirm though that the disc is locked to Region B players, meaning that the US, and other areas who are Region A or C will need a multi-regional Blu-ray player to watch this disc.

AWESOME Rocker Smurf!!!! You are lucky!! I like on your Smurfs and the Magic Flute inside sleeve the line "The Complete Seasons 1 & 2 - Out Now in All Good Retailers".
Give your review when you can. I don't understand why they do that region stuff it seems like a hassle.

Re: Smurfy1for2, I managed to view all of Season 2 before sending it back on Amazon because I was unhappy with the damage that one of the discs received by becoming dislodged during postage - again! My copy of Magic Flute didn't have this problem, although I bought it on HMV rather than Amazon. And the line "Out Now in All Good Retailers" is actually a complete pile of smurf! Apart from HMV stores, I haven't seen either box set in a single high street store, that's why I have had to buy them online.
And the studios did region coding on DVDs for legal issues. For Blu-ray, several of them don't bother and make many titles region free, but unfortunately, it's not the case for the Smurfs and the Magic Flute.
Re: Sassette, it happens to me a lot when I pre-order online. They dispatch early to try and make sure you get your items on their day of release, but most of the time I get them a day or two earlier. And I will watch the Magic Flute Blu-ray hopefully tomorrow, then I can write my reviews for both of them.
Re: GreenDay Smurf, I bought Season 1 and 2 on Amazon yes, but for the reasons I have previously stated, I wouldn't recommend them. I bought the Magic Flute on HMV though and that came with no problems or damage (though Blu-ray discs are pretty hard to scratch up badly).

That's exactly why. I'm really fussy about my DVDs staying in mint condition at all times anyway, but the bottom line is that when I buy something listed as brand new, I expect it to look brand new when it arrives, especially after I've paid nearly £30 for it.
I haven't asked for a replacement of Season 2 from Amazon, just a refund. I'll just buying it again at HMV when it goes down in price.
