Neil Patrick Harris is one versatile showbiz star - he can sing and dance, perform voice-overs, host award shows, and act in theater, film and TV shows.
In 1988, Neil Patrick Harris made his film debut in two movies - Purple People Eater and Clara's Heart (which starred Whoopi Goldberg). A year later, when Neil was 16, he landed the lead role in the TV series about a teen prodigy doctor, Doogie Howser, M.D. The series lasted from 1989-1993. After "Doogie" ended, Neil got involved in theater and performed in several Broadway productions. He had a small but memorable cameo in the comedy Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle, in which he played a "drug and sex addicted" version of himself. To many fans, Neil is most recognizable as the womanizing "Barney Stinson" in the TV series How I Met Your Mother. |

Working with Smurfs director, Raja Gosnell, was both a satisfying and enlightening experience for Neil...
"Raj did a great job – he had to deal with so many weird little things happening all at the same time. Not only do you have all the ordinary stuff – making sure the actors hit their marks and it's all lit correctly – but you might have an animal in the scene, or maybe bowls on monofilament that in the final shot the Smurfs will be carrying around. Raj had to keep it all in his head so that when you see the movie, you never think about any of that – it's just that the Smurfs are part of our world."

"Not only is Neil incredibly funny and charming, but he also delivered nuance to the role. His character and Papa have a few quiet moments together, and he makes those scenes surprisingly emotional.

SMURFS WEEK IN NYC

Neil Patrick Harris, Hank Azaria and Jayma Mays turned New York City blue to mark the opening of the live action movie The Smurfs. The actors kicked off Smurfs Week NYC (a series of events centered around the family comedy) in the Big Apple on Sunday, July 24, 2011 by walking the "blue" carpet with co-stars Katy Perry and Sofia Vergara at the film's world premiere.
The celebrations continued at the 3D Smurf Village in Central Park - a themed kids' area complete with colorful 10-foot tall mushroom houses and a 40-foot tall inflatable Smurf. Life size cuddly Papa Smurf and Smurfette joined the fun too.
Neil Patrick Harris later switched on the lights at the top of the Empire State Building to shine bright blue to encourage Smurfs fans to donate to the U.S. Fund for UNICEF. Activities continued throughout the week, with an unveiling ceremony at FAO Schwarz (where part of the movie was filmed), a character meet-and-greet at Build-A-Bear Workshop, and special themed windows and activities at Dylan's Candy Bar. Additional events took place at the Brooklyn Children’s Museum, the Mount Vernon Hotel Museum & Garden, The New York Botanical Garden, the Regal E-walk, The Skyscraper Museum, and more. Also, On Location Tours offered tours focusing on a Smurfs-themed edition of its weekly Central Park TV & Movie Sites Tour during which you can visit the locations used in The Smurfs and other iconic films.
