Katy Perry is a pop singing sensation. She is a world famous singer and songwriter up there with the likes of Britney Spears, Lady Gaga, Pink, and Rihanna. Katy Perry is known for her sexy but sweet style. She loves dressing is colorful clothing - often with unique and unconventional flare. Her hair has been known to be quite colorful too! As it happens, the Smurfs filmmakers set their heart on Katy Perry for the role of Smurfette even before she spoke a single line of dialog...
"They had done a blind test where they took certain voices from previous interviews and matched them with the character. They liked my voice without even knowing who it was, and when they found out it was me, they thought that would work out. My personality was just a plus!"
Katy found an affinity with the character she plays... "They asked me to add my nuance to it – so I was able to be sassy and cute, a little mischievous and funny. It's really interesting, because I got to be a part of creating her character. It's really fun – it's basically my voice with some rocks thrown in it, like I had too many cups of coffee."
Katy says that making the transition from world-famous recording artist to voiceover actress was a natural next step... "I use my voice every single day. And I feel very cartoony at times, just in the way I present myself. So It was a natural progression – something natural for me to do." |

Smurfs Movie World Premiere
On July 24, 2011, Katy Perry wore a bedazzled Smurfette dress to the premiere of The Smurfs film held at the Ziegfeld Theatre in New York City. The cast from the animated 3D "The Smurfs" movie hit the blue carpet for the smurfy premiere. Katy even had special Smurf nails - with a different Smurf on each finger. Debuting her newly blond hair and special white dress, she was more than just the voice of Smurfette - she looked like Smurfette! On her way to the premiere she tweeted, "Headed to SMURF VILLAGE for the premiere of The Smurfs!!! I’m SMURFETTE!!! I’m blue… aba de aba die aba de aba di aba de aba di! YAY". |

About Katy's Childhood
Katy Perry was raised with a very strict upbringing. She was not allowed to say things like “deviled eggs” or “Dirt Devil", nor to listen to any secular music or read any other books but the Bible.
Katy Perry says she wasn't even allowed to watch "The Smurfs" Cartoon growing up! So Katy voicing the Smurfette character for the Smurfs Movies was little bit of childhood rebellion against her parents..."I've never seen an episode [of 'The Smurfs'], because my parents wouldn't let me. My mom thought that Smurfette was a little bit slutty, being the only female in the village. And now I showed her. I called her up and was like, 'Guess what, Mom: I'm Smurfette!'".
You get the feeling that Katy's Mom is getting used to her daughter's phone calls these days... "It's just like another one of those days where it's like, 'Guess what, Mom: I kissed a girl! Guess what, Mom: I'm going to be naked in a music video!' " Perry laughed.
Despite their differences, Katy Perry and her parents are very close... "We coexist. I don’t try to change them anymore, and I don’t think they try to change me. We agree to disagree. They’re excited about [my success]. They’re happy that things are going well for their three children and that they’re not on drugs. Or in prison.”
