The first reviews are in, and so far the early consensus is what I expected it to be. The critics are not exactly calling it good, but they're not saying it's terrible either.
Hollywood Reporter - Smurfs 2 Review:
The Bottom Line - "If you've been suffering from Smurf-essence withdrawal, this is the movie to satisfy that craving."
Neil Patrick Harris, Hank Azaria, Jayma Mays and Katy Perry return for a fairly rote sequel. Time flies when you’re not wondering about the welfare of the Smurfs, those diminutive, animated blue-skinned forest dwellers. Turns out they’ve been just fine since their 2011 big-screen outing, but there’s trouble brewing in their new adventure-comedy that will require their curious blend of wide-eyed optimism and goofy enthusiasm to peacefully resolve.
A sequel largely unwarranted other than for boxoffice and promotional purposes, the unimaginatively titled The Smurfs 2 should have little trouble scaling stratospheric heights similar to its predecessor with undiscriminating young audiences and their chaperones, weary from near-unrelenting summertime care-giving.
The occasion of Smurfette’s (Katy Perry) birthday presents the opportunity for her to recall her conflicted origins – rather than a “true-blue” Smurf, she was actually created by the hapless, wanna-be evil sorcerer Gargamel (Hank Azaria), who now intends to kidnap her from her enchanted-forest home to obtain the formula for the magical Smurf-essence that Papa Smurf (Jonathan Winters) used to originally bestow her with blue-skinned bliss. Once he has the secret, Gargamel plans to power up a host of Naughties, Smurf-sized creatures he’s created, to help him take over the world.
So he dispatches his Naughty daughter Vexy (Christina Ricci) to drag Smurfette through a magic portal and into the real world where he can more effectively manipulate her inherent identity issues. Papa Smurf and his mismatched extraction team consisting of Grouchy (George Lopez), Clumsy (Anton Yelchin) and Vanity (John Oliver) will have to portal to the live-action world to reunite in Paris with the sympathetic young family of Patrick (Neil Patrick Harris) and Grace (Jayma Mays) Winslow, their live-action counterparts from the original movie, if they’re to have any chance of rescuing Smurfette.
Returning the movie to the European locale of the Belgian Smurfs comic-strip originator Pierre Culliford adds some visual interest, with Paris as the backdrop for the Smurfs’ rescue mission, but beyond the classic cityscapes, there’s little innovative in this formulaic follow-up.
The Smurfs director Raja Gosnell (Beverly Hills Chihuahua, Scooby Doo) has built his career with cute-critter pics and other family fare, and his middlebrow track record remains unblemished with the Smurfs’ big-screen return. With a primarily impressionable young target audience, the returning screenwriting team of J. David Stem, David N. Weiss, Jay Scherick and David Ronn, along with Karey Kirkpatrick (Charlotte’s Web, Chicken Run), has no problem frequently repeating lines, gags and life lessons to near-numbing effect. Beyond a few chuckle-worthy one-liners and some amusing visual comedy, there’s not much to engage adults, although the wee ones should be distracted enough.
In his final film role, Jonathan Winters reprises the beneficent Papa Smurf with the requisite twinkle in his voice, but takes a backseat to Perry’s bewildered, wounded and ultimately outraged Smurfette. Harris and Mays, as the parents of a young boy appropriately named “Blue” (Jacob Tremblay), acquit themselves good-naturedly enough, although it's Brendan Gleeson as Patrick’s well-intentioned but misunderstood stepfather, Vince Winslow, who really shines in an all-out turn that gleefully showcases his considerable comic gifts. Azaria is equally antic as the incompetent wizard beset by the uneven, if unrelenting, team of Smurf rescuers featuring Lopez, Yelchin and Oliver.
With the exception of Gargamel’s awkwardly rendered CGI cat cohort Azrael, the mix of animation and live-action appears fairly seamless in a 3D rendition that helps keep the movie from slipping into the overly saccharine variation favored by the fully animated 1980s TV series.
Variety - Smurfs 2 Review:
The global family auds who powered 2011’s “The Smurfs” to a smurftastic $580 million gross will find much to enjoy in “The Smurfs 2,” a sequel that changes scarcely a drop of Smurf-essence in its winning formula. Tax-incentive Paris is substituted for New York this time, and a few new characters have been added to the mix, but the genially goofy shenanigans, incredibly corny punchlines and Hank Azaria’s go-for-broke performance as the incompetent wizard Gargamel are very much the same ― an entirely welcome thing in a summer movie season full of so much apocalyptic Sturm und Drang. Coming on the heels of DreamWorks Animation’s nonstarter “Turbo,” the pic should prove a formidable challenger to “Monsters University” and “Despicable Me 2” for the summer’s family box-office pennant.
Much like its predecessor, this new “Smurfs” plays like a lower-brow version of Disney’s 2007 hit “Enchanted,” with beloved storybook characters freely interacting with humans on the streets of a major city (where, in contrast to their counterparts in most pics of this type, they take few pains to disguise themselves). And while neither “Smurfs” outing matches “Enchanted” or the similar-themed “Night at the Museum” movies in terms of subversive wit and imaginative storytelling, they’re nevertheless pleasing, fairly mindless entertainments, made with a lot of affection for the original “Smurfs” comics of Belgian illustrator Peyo, and just enough sly, self-referential snark to keep parents from feeling like they’re on babysitting duty.
Set three years after the events of the first pic, “Smurfs 2” again opens in Smurf Village, where the looming birthday of Smurfette (Katy Perry) provides the occasion for Narrator Smurf (Tom Kane) to recount the story of how the lone female smurf came to be, starting life as the golem-like creation of Gargamel, only to to be rescued and turned into a real Smurf by the ever-benevolent Papa (again warmly voiced by Jonathan Winters, in his final film role). That sets the stage for a movie very much about Smurfette’s identity crisis ― call it a smurferiority complex ― including her mistaken belief that everyone in the village has forgotten her birthday (when in fact they’re planning a surprise party).
Meanwhile, Gargamel, last seen left behind in New York, has improbably become a world-renowned stage magician, enthralling packed houses nightly with his Smurf-essence-powered illusions. He’s also made two more ill-fated attempts to create his own Smurfs from scratch, resulting in the pale-skinned “naughties” Vexy (Christina Ricci), who’s like a punk Smurfette, and Hackus (JB Smoove), who seems to have a cavernous chasm where his brain should be. Running low on magic supplies, Gargamel is desperate to get his hands on the formula that turned Smurfette blue, which he will then apply to his naughties before bleeding them dry in his suped-up Smurf-a-lator. So he opens another interdimensional portal and sends Vexy to Smurf Village, where she kidnaps Smurfette and brings her to the City of Lights, where Gargamel is preparing to open an engagement … at the Paris Opera!
Of course, where one Smurf goes, more are sure to follow, and soon Papa, Clumsy (Anton Yelchin), Grouchy (George Lopez) and Vanity (John Oliver) are on the case, with a pit stop in New York to pick up human buddies Patrick (Neil Patrick Harris) and Grace (Jayma Mays), now joined by their son Blue (Jacob Tremblay) and Patrick’s gregarious, estranged stepfather, Victor (Brendan Gleeson). Nowhere to be seen this time around: Patrick’s ball-busting cosmetics company boss (Sofia Vergara), who seems to have rewarded him with the kind of flexible hours that allow one to make unscheduled European vacations.
The Paris scenes are conceived by returning director Raja Gosnell and returning writers J. David Stern, David N. Weiss, Jay Scherick and David Ronn (here joined by “Chicken Run” scribe Karey Kirkpatrick) as a series of antic chases in and around such iconic locales as the Opera, Notre Dame, Eiffel Tower and Hotel Plaza Athenee, where Victor, having been transformed into a duck by Gargamel, narrowly avoids ending up as the dinner special. At the same time, the wizard works his strange charm offensive on Smurfette, wooing her with gifts and reminding her that he’s her “real” father, leading one observer to remark that she may be coming down with a case of (wait for it) Smurfholm Syndrome.
Gosnell and editor Sabrina Plisco keep all this moving along breezily for about as long as humanly possible, then have the good sense to wrap things up rather quickly and bid adieu. Once more, it falls to wise Papa to lend Patrick some advice about parent-child relationships, but Gosnell never tugs too hard on the heartstrings, perhaps realizing that to do so would be sheer folly in a movie about a bald, buck-toothed man in a baggy black sari chasing after little blue creatures.
Through it all, you have to hand it to Azaria, who throws himself into the role of Gargamel with such abandon that he practically becomes a bouncy, rubbery cartoon character himself. He exists in the movie to be systematically humiliated and cursed by fate ― a human Wile E. Coyote ― and he does it with relish. What’s more: He convinces you that he really, really wants those Smurfs. Oh, how he wants them.
Pic’s integration of live-action and animated elements is once again seamless, while the post-production 3D conversion is good of its type but hardly worth the added price of admission. Paris shimmers splendidly through the lens of returning d.p. Phil Meheux.
ScreenDaily - Smurfs 2 Review:
The story may seem a bit familiar, but hybrid live action/animated sequel The Smurfs 2 at least adds a photogenic international setting, enhanced effects and a few new characters to the formula that made its affable predecessor a $564m family comedy smash for Sony two years ago. Another big international-skewed take should be on the cards this time out, though competitive conditions could effect the tallies in individual markets.
In North America, where it gets a jump on the weekend with a July 31 opening, the 3D sequel arrives in cinemas soon after Despicable Me 2 and Turbo and just before Planes – so beating the original’s $143m gross won’t be a given. In international markets, many of which get the sequel this weekend too, competition may be lighter, so topping the original’s $421m might be doable.
With a script from the original’s four writers plus one more scribe, the sequel once again has a team of Smurfs - the happy little blue creatures that first appeared in a 1958 Belgian comic book - leaving their idyllic village for the human world. This time, Papa Smurf and his helpers are out to rescue Smurfette from evil wizard Gargamel (again played by Hank Azaria), the female Smurf’s original creator, now doing stage magic in Paris. Jonathan Winters and Katy Perry return to head the voice cast and they’re joined by new additions including Christina Ricci and British comedian John Oliver.
In the human world, the Smurfs re-unite with young marrieds Patrick and Grace Winslow (Neil Patrick Harris and Jayma Mays, both returning from the original) and get extra help from Patrick’s genial stepfather Victor (new cast member Brendan Gleeson).
Hybrid specialist Raja Gosnell returns as director and ably delivers slapstick comedy for the kids and nicely shot views of Paris landmarks for the adults.
The effects are more elaborate and plentiful than they were in the relatively low tech original and there’s another message about the importance of family — this time Smurfette learns that her adopted father Papa means more to her than ‘real father’ Gargamel while Patrick works through similar issues with Victor.

Remember what the critics said about the first one. The reviews were brutal, but the audience had a different opinion, reflected in box office and merchant sales.

Wait for Rottentomatoes to review it especially the audience reviews. The first film got a devastated low blow, low percentage of audience liked it. I gave 3 out of 5 stars I got to admit the first one didn't age well at all. Good to know The Smurfs 2 got a good start just over a month to go for me then... (October 3 2013)

NASCAR News! --- Ryan Newman drives Smurfs 2 race car at Indianapolis ---
 The Smurfs 2 Race Car
Ryan Newman Drives Smurfs 2 Car at Indianapolis
Ryan Newman may seem a little blue this weekend at Indianapolis Motor Speedway. That is because the driver of the Stewart Hass Racing No. 39 Chevrolet will be driving a paint scheme for the new movie Smurfs 2.
Quicken Loans and Sony Pictures Entertainment have partnered this weekend to share time on Newman’s race car at the 103 year old Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
“It’s a unique racetrack. We all know that. It’s a lot of fun, especially when you’re up front. It seems like the straightaways go on forever and you can just sit there and relax and drive the racecar. The racetrack is really fun to drive. It’s one of the hardest tracks to race, which is why some people love it and some people hate it. It’s really a deal where, if you have a fast racecar, you will have fun.” Newman said in a press release.
Though he cautioned about the difficulty of passing at the flat track.
“If your car isn’t fast, it’s going to be a miserable day. It is so difficult to pass there. Track position is so important. But for me, I think racing at Indianapolis is just about the history of the track. The history of all auto racing at that facility and around there. Growing up in Indiana and being an open-wheel driver, I got to spend a lot of time around the Speedway and competing there and knowing the history of people like A.J. Foyt, Mel Kenyon and all the greats who have raced there. Just to know my tire tracks are in theirs, that’s cool. That’s what makes it special.”
Currently 19th in points, Newman enters Indy 36 points behind the 10th and final guaranteed spot in the 12-driver, 10-race Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup.
Newman’s best finish at Indianapolis was a second place run in 2003. He finished 11th at the 2.5 mile track last season.

I've just come back from seeing it and after being pleasantly surprised by the first film, I can say that I think this one is even better. By no means flawless, but I had a great time watching it and all who enjoyed the first film should enjoy the sequel too.

My comment on The Smurfs 2 (Want to see it) on Rottentomatoes: "OK Let's just say I'm going to watch because I'm going to pay the respect to Jonathan Winters work one last time This time its purely because of Jonathan not The Smurfs they already lost their faithful spirit at this point." Sorry that's my opinion if this can make some of you go mad... It's not like i'm going to bombard the movie but I'll watch it as a popcorn movie.

I have watched the Smurfs 2, and here's my thoughts on it.
Let's just say that I couldn't see any worse or better, but it's still meh. Although there are some few funny moments, as well as some other moments that weren't necessarily needed. (like some fart jokes like one from Grouchy) Along with a decent story, great casting (Jonathan Winters (R.I.P), Neil Patrick Harris and Hank Azeria) and not to mention, it wasn't a bad sequel; but still isn't any better than the first film to say the least.
So I'll be glad to say that I somehow enjoyed it nonetheless, despite what I had mentioned with good and bad stuff. But hey, I already appreciated the work on both films now ever since. (I watched the first film again on DVD two months ago to upped my anticipation for the sequel's release date)
My rating: 5/10 (If you're an all time fan of the Smurfs, I am sure you will enjoy it too)
