Personally, I wouldn't call Lucille Bliss the "definitive voice of Smurfette", but that's just my opinion.

I really hope that Brainy and Clumsy will be in the movie because I like watching the interaction between them.
Does anyone think the movie will include the smurflings? Or do you think it will be just the original cast of smurfs (like from the first couple of seasons) with Gargamel and Azrael?
PS - great "coming soon" poster!

Personally, I didn't really care for the Smurflings.
I wonder what the movie will be like... I hope it's not "computer"-animated. Yucky!

Funny. I've always felt the same way about the Smurflings and still do. Even though I accepted them they always still felt out of place for me in the cartoon. I remember watching their debut back in September of 1985 and not feeling too crazy about that new addition. I'm glad I'm not the only one. I think the Smurfs were at their very best in their first few seasons in 1981-1984, and nothing will ever change how I feel about that. Maybe I'm just overly sentimental, which is often the case, but that's the way it is.
As for the subject here, I really REALLY cannot wait to check out this movie. I just hope they have most, if not all, of the original characters in this film and preserve the original feel that this cartoon had to offer. Either way, I still have to see this.

This is from moviehole.net
Producer Jordan Kerner (Charlotte’s Web & George of the Jungle 2) describes the new movie adaptation of "The Smurfs".
"It’s a 3-D/CG Smurfs", said Kerner. "You just can’t make those guys live – it’d be a little weird, but a 3D Shrek world of them - that’s fantastic."
Kerner states that he has been researching the popular 80s cartoon extensively. "Having seen all 234 episodes of the show, numerous times, Herb Ratner and I have been working really hard at looking where all the holes were in the episodes - ya know, like all of a sudden another woman appears, it’s not just Smurfette – and what we’ve done is we’ve plugged all those holes in a trilogy of three movies, and we reveal things as we go along".
"They’re [Peyo] all so very protective of [The Smurfs], so it took me five years of negotiation to get the rights. And then, they were very uncertain about what story we wanted to tell – we weren’t going to tell them until we had the rights, either. Then we got the rights on everyone’s faith that they also had an ability to veto, and presented them with the treatment. They just loved it. To be told that they loved it – not just liked it – and to be told that [creator] Peyo would’ve loved it, is a huge blessing and a great thing to have happen".
The Smurfs trilogy will be "the animated Lord of the Rings – through the world of these idiots. Because they’re sweet characters but they’re goofs. It’s a comic version, but still very heartfelt, version of Lord of the Rings – though not literally Lord of the Rings, but an epic story like that."
Moviehole.net suggested that the voice of Gargamel is perfectly suited to be voiced by actor John Lithgow. "Very interesting", smiles Kerner. "I love John Lithgow".
Gargamel’s back-story (history) is going to be fully examined in the film trilogy. Viewers will learn "[more] about Gargamel and Smurf Soup and how all that began and what really goes on in that castle. What his backstory really was. There’s an all-powerful wizard... there’s all sorts of things that get revealed as we go along".

Unfortunately The Smurfs movie will be 3D CGI rendered. I'm not crazy about the idea but this seems to the dominant trend in animation these days. Personally it's oversaturated the market with everything looking like a Pixar clone.
I do hope though that the studio producing the films (it's a Lord Of The Rings Trilogy thing) treat the characters gingerly.
Hollywood folk have a tendency to overexaggerate their self importance using the Special Effect eye candy.
What I do hope though is that the comic albums will be reissued again including other titles that haven't been seen yet.
Smurfing my fingers cross for it.

"Unfortunately"? Heck, I've been hoping for a Smurfs movie to be done in 3D CGI. In fact, the Empath story was intended to be done in 3D CGI.

I assume the movie will take place in the forest with The Smurf Village and Gargamel's Castle. I hope that they don't try to place the Smurfs in a "modern" environment. Could you image our little friends in a big city like New York? LOL! ... although the Muppets were able to "take" on Manhattan!

One idea I had for an EMPATH short story episode was to have the Smurfs during their time-traveling adventures appear in a modern-day big city, dealing with a business mogul named Garfield A. Melthorne (modern-day counterpart of Gargamel) who has them captured and imprisoned in a high-tech laboratory for scientific study. Somehow Empath ends up bumped into the same time period around the same time the other Smurfs get captured, and with the help of a young teenager who was the descendant of King Gerard, he covertly helps the other Smurfs escape and re-enter the timestream again, but he doesn't reunite with them because he ends up being bumped back into his own present time.

That sounds totally smurfy!!! I can just picture the high-tech lab - it would be super creepy and scary for the smurfs! Not only a great story idea but it would lend itself to some amazing pictures.

At the 2007 Toy fair they said that Paramount just signed with IMPS and that there was no possible way the movie would be out in time for the 50th anniversary of the smurfs. They (Schleich) said that the movie had to be pushed off until 2009 the earliest, and possible later than that. It makes sense because if the movie was coming out in 2008 then the 2007 toy fair and 2007 licensing fair would be the last oppurtunity anyone would have to promote the movie to the professionals before it came out, and there was nothing, no sign of it coming any time soon...

A 3d movie can be made in about 6 months a year tops if they want it to look the 'best'. Why would they miss their own anniversary? That makes no sense.
