Well it appears that the Smurfs are to officially hit DVD with Smurfs volume one said to be coming out soon. http://www.ezydvd.com.au/item.zml/229281 As you can see this is an Australian site and Australia tends to get a lot of things later than the US, but this doesn't seem to be out anywhere yet. Are there any US or European online video sites showing similar DVDs coming out soon?

The first season set will be released around Christmas of 2005? Heck, that's quite a while to wait for it!

Actually, we get a bunch of things here before the Americans do. Buffy, being the big example. We had series 5 released on DVD here while they were only up to series 2 over there.

I can't wait to buy the Smurfs DVD. I wonder if it will have any extra features. Some games would be smurfy.

I checked out the Smurfs DVD today (I live in Australia). Basically, what you get is no subtitles (so deaf people can't watch it).
I hope The Smurfs comes out in America or somewhere else with subtitles for poor deaf people.

Hello people
The smurfs are now available on DVD. This is the original series. Unfortunately, I only know about Region 4 dvds that come from Australia.
Follow this link for more information.

Hi Squeaker!
Glad you liked it! It's great that there are finally legitimate Smurf DVDs for sale. Smurf fans have been really clamoring for a Smurf DVD release for a long time, and it's nice that someone actually listened. By the way, does your copy have the "medecine" spelling error?
Three cheers for the first Smurf DVD release!

Yes it does. I wonder if Lazy Smurf was responsible for proof reading the back of the box.

Just to keep you updated, it appears that Volume 3 will be soon released by Magna Pacific. See the EzDVD website. In case anyone is interested, the whole first season of the Flintstones is coming out in Australia. It may already be out elsewhere. This seems to be whole better deal than what we're getting with the current Smurf releases. Hopefully another distributor or the same one decides to release boxed-sets rather than single discs with 6 episodes. The Flintstone one has 28 episodes and is quite good value for money that way.

Thanks for the updates Sqeaker and Handy Smurf!
I took another look at the back of the Smurfs DVD Volume 1 and Volume 2. The voice actors are not listed at all in the credits. People like Don Messick, who played Azrael and Papa Smurf, are among the most seminal and influential voice actors of the era. And where would the Smurfs be without June Foray, who played Jokey? One could argue that the Smurfs would have never had the major cultural impact that they had in North America during the 1980s without these actors...
Boy, am I excited about the Smurfs Volume 3! Thanks for the info, Handy!
PS Our Smurfs DVD section was updated awhile ago to include the Smurfs Volume 2, in case anysmurf missed it!

One thing I've got to ask about these volumes of Smurf DVDs, for those who have them is, are they in order and from the first season, or are they just a mixture of the best episodes?

Handy, the episodes on Vol.1 are taken from series 1 randomly, who knows - perhaps the producers considered them the best.
I don't own Vol.2 yet and am debating if I should continue purchasing or not. We don't have the Smurf theme song, the credits seem new (ummm, I doubt the 80's version has a website listed in it!) and I can't stand having episodes in the incorrect order. Is this because they didn't license direct from Hanna-Barbara? Would that explain why there's no theme tune?
The thing Magna Pacific got right was the decent packaging and reasonable price point.
And yes, my copy has the spelling mistake in "Medecine".
Hmmmm I think we should use this site to draw attention to the flaws in this release and point it out to Magna Pacific, maybe they'll improve they're act for future releases.

Indeed. Most people would prefer getting a whole season boxed-set with episodes in the correct order as the Flinstones will be. Better value as well. I'm still not sure if I will get it. Like you, I'd love to get the Smurfs on DVD, but the current release leaves something to be desired. Thanks for your reply.

Hey hey fellow Smurfs.
A message to: PAPA SMURF, SQUEAKER AND OUTERSPACERACE and everyone else who is interested!
The spelling of "medecine" is true and correct! If you actually watched the episode of Jokey's Medecine, you will realise that in the episode, it is spelt m e d 'e' c i n e! So, it wasn't actually Magna Pacific who spelt it wrong. They were going off the actual episode title. I thought I should clarify that for you all.
For those of you enquiring about subtitling, here's the 411:
The financial implications for Magna Pacific to include subtitling on all of their 50+ DVD releases per month would not allow them to maintain their market leading position of affordable DVD's.
The major studios are able to include subtitles, including foreign languages subtitles, as they only have to author one DVD and use it for their entire world market, meaning only one set of materials need to be produced and the cost distributed amongst an enormous market. This saves them heaps of money and they still keep their prices much higher than Magna's despite this saving. In contrast to this, Magna Pacific are the largest producer of Australian authored DVD's in the country and are limited to distributing their titles in Australia and New Zealand only. They do subtitle most of their major releases and the projected revenue for these justifies the cost (up to $20 per minute).
Now, about the music, the quality and so forth. If you look on the back of the DVD at the bottom, it says where this Smurfs version comes from. Magna Pacific purchased the distribution rights to the Smurfs directly from the licensor. In this case, PEYO and I.M.P.S. Strict guidelines prevent Magna from altering the DVD’s in any way, shape or form! The master they authored the DVD from was all they could obtain from the licensor and being that the show is like over 25 years old; naturally the quality is going to be a little off. I am sure that it is not Magna’s intention to release low-standard quality titles. Sometimes, the master is all they have to work with, and being they have strict guidelines that prevent them from altering the master, they have no choice but to release it in its ORIGINAL form!
As for special features…I work in the film industry and I certainly know how difficult it is obtain rights to extra footage, making of’s, games etc. I would assume that Magna Pacific just wasn’t able to obtain these rights to use on the DVD. I am sure they would have if they could. Plus anyway, what special features would you expect from a TV Show that was made in the 80's. It would be interesting to know!
Magna Pacific has been responsible for a great number of quality Children DVD releases. Titles such as: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Yu Gi Oh, Care Bears, Fairly Odd Parents, Crush Gear, and heaps more. Not only do they bring out great Children’s titles, but they also bring out awesome movie and documentary titles. Rabbit Proof Fence, Strange Bedfellows, SuperSize Me, American Chopper just to name a few. I think Magna rocks! Keep up the good work!

Hi wisesmurf,
Thanks for your reply about the Magna Pacific Smurf DVDs.
Perhaps you can help answer some other questions.
Any info about the voice actors? Most US animated DVDs seem to list the voice actors along with the characters they played.
Second, was the source material 24 FPS film or 30 FPS NTSC video? (I believe when Ted Turner bought Hanna Barbera in 1991 he converted the cartoon film archives to NTSC video for broadcast). If the NTSC broadcast master was used for conversion to PAL, it would eliminate the 4% audio speed-up PAL video/DVDs experience when transferring from 24 FPS film.
Thanks!
