Here is my EMPATH: The Luckiest Smurf story adaptation of "The Astro Smurf". Enjoy! ----- Chapter 1
It was a day that was sometime after the 50th birthday of Empath and Smurfette's daughter Psycheliana that her parents both paid a visit to the Imaginarium. They told her about one of the worlds that her uncle Dreamy Smurf had created which was the planet of the Swoofs. She was curious to discover what this world was like for herself, so she went into the fantasy setting with her friend Miracle Smurf to visit it with her parents' permission. It was now several hours later, and Empath and Smurfette decided to visit it together to see if what had happened to the two young Smurflings. "Imaginarium, take us into the Planet Swoof setting," Empath requested as soon as he and Smurfette stepped into the room with the big crystals. Suddenly the two of them found themselves in a rocky terrain that looked very familiar to both Smurfs, particularly to Smurfette because she had been in that place in reality. "Halt — who swoofs here?" a Swoof said in a voice that sounded like Hefty, as he saw Empath and Smurfette approaching and aimed a spear at them. “Are you friend or foe?” "We're the parents of two Smurfs who have smurfed to your world to visit your people, having smurfed of your adventures from Astro Smurf," Empath explained. "Yes, we know of the children of which you swoof," the Swoof said, lowering his spear. "Come, we will swoof you to them." He then guided Empath and Smurfette to the village of makeshift huts, where they saw Miracle and Psycheliana dancing and having fun with the Swooflings around the fire while some of the adult Swoofs were playing music. "Ah, welcome, friends of Astro Smurf," Grandpa Swoof said as he greeted the two Smurfs visiting their world. "I believe that these children are yours, who swoof from the same world that Astro Smurf does." "Yes, they are, Grandpa Swoof, and we couldn't be more proud of them," Smurfette said. "We need to smurf them back to our own world, now that they've had their fun in yours," Empath said. "Of course," Grandpa Swoof said. "I believe it is time for all of us to prepare for our supper." He then turned to the children. "Swooflings, it is time we swoofed goodbye to our guests. We will swoof them again another day." The Swooflings groaned as they stopped dancing and allowed Miracle and Psycheliana to rejoin their parents. Empath laughed as he saw how much like real children the Swooflings were in the Imaginarium, not wanting their fun to stop when they are called to put away their toys and games by the grown-ups. "So how was your visit with the Swoofs today?" Empath asked as the four of them left the Imaginarium fantasy setting and returned to the real world. "Oh, it was just smurftastic, Papa," Psycheliana said. "The grown-up Swoofs got into a fight with this big terrifying Arachnosaur that almost would have devoured the whole village and all." "An Arachnosaur?" Smurfette said. "That sounds a bit too scary for you children to smurf with." "Not with Liana the super girl Smurf," Miracle said. "You should have smurfed her in action with the Arachnosaur. She was smurfing that thing so hard with a left and a right and..." "Needless to say, it won't be smurfing any Swoofs into cocoons for it to be smurfing any blood from them...not that I think that Swoof blood would be tasty for an Arachnosaur," Psycheliana said. "That sounds pretty gruesome for a child's fantasy setting," Smurfette said with a hint of distaste. "Well, we had to smurf things a bit more exciting than what Uncle Dreamy had smurfed when he first smurfed up that fantasy world in the first smurf, Aunt Smurfette," Miracle said. "By the way, what was it like when Uncle Dreamy first visited the Swoofs, Mama?" Psycheliana asked. "Dreamy's first visit with the Swoofs was during my first year as a Smurf, around the time that your uncle had smurfed his 150th birthday, Liana," Smurfette said. "He had smurfed up a very special wish that he wanted to smurf true, and so that was what we ended up smurfing him when all was said and smurfed."
And as Smurfette told her story, Psycheliana saw in her mind the Smurfs all gathered around in Tapper's Tavern, watching as Greedy had brought in the birthday cake with its candles, singing "Happy Smurfday To You" while Dreamy watched in anticipation for that moment to blow out the candles. "Oh, Dreamy, what are you wishing for this year, if I may ask?" Smurfette asked. "Wait a minute, Smurfette, and I'll let you know, because I can't smurf it until I smurf out the candles," Dreamy said. He waited a moment to think of what he wanted to wish for, and then he blew out all the candles, which made the other Smurfs present cheer with excitement. "Okay, laddie, don't leave the other Smurfs wondering now," Duncan said. "Tell us what it is that you've wished for." "Duncan, please, let our fellow Smurf decide if he wants to smurf it or not," Tapper said. "Though I am also eager to find out for myself." "So what is it, Dreamy?" Brainy asked. "What is it that you wished for this year?" "Oh, please, Dreamy, you've got to tell your friends," Clumsy said, sounding very eager to hear. "Okay, okay, I will tell you," Dreamy said, realizing that he couldn't leave his fellow Smurfs in suspense. "This year I wished that I could smurf into the stars and explore strange new worlds and smurf out new life and new civilizations...to boldly smurf where no Smurf has ever smurfed before." "That's your birthday wish?" most of the Smurfs said together, sounding a bit surprised. "I hate smurfing birthday wishes," Grouchy said. "That just sounds so wonderful, Dreamy Smurf, but the question is, how are you going to smurf it?" Brainy said. "I mean, no Smurf has ever attempted to smurf into the stars before, and I'm not sure that any Smurf will have the ability to smurf into the stars. This is something that I would calculate as never actually smurfing for the next thousand years, because our level of smurfnology as Smurfs is not to the point where..." "Oh, take a long smurf off a short pier with that belief, Brainy," Duncan said. "If Dreamy can figure out a way that he can smurf to the stars, I'd say we smurf him the encouragement to at least try." "Gutsy is right, Brainy," Hefty said. "If Dreamy wants to prove that he can smurf to the stars, even if the whole idea is laughable, let him smurf a fool of himself trying to smurf it." "Oh, don't listen to Brainy and Hefty, Dreamy," Smurfette said. "I just want to let you know that if you can find a way to smurf to the stars, I'll be there to wish you a smurfy journey." With that, she gave Dreamy a kiss on the cheek. "Aw, thanks, Smurfette," Dreamy said. "At least I know that you believe in me."
"Of course, your Uncle Dreamy's birthday wish soon became an obsession, as he would spend nights smurfing at the stars and imagining himself smurfing through them to those strange new worlds out there in the cosmos," Smurfette said to Psycheliana. "What did he do to try fulfilling his wish, Mama Smurf?" Psycheliana asked. "Well, years before I smurfed into the village, your Uncle Handy wanted to fly like Empath, so he smurfed all these things that he could smurf just to be able to fly, until he smurfed into Papa Smurf's laboratory and smurfed himself a lighter-than-air formula that made him rise from the ground," Smurfette said. "Unfortunately, he couldn't smurf himself back down to the ground, so Empath had to smurf up there and pull Handy back down until Papa Smurf could smurf an antidote to make him heavy again. Your Uncle Dreamy decided that he was going to smurf himself a big kite so that he could fly in the air." "And that was supposed to help him smurf into the stars?" Psycheliana said, sounding rather amused. "This I've got to hear about." And so as Smurfette continued her story, Psycheliana saw that Dreamy had smurfed himself a big kite and was now waiting in the center of the village for the wind to pick up. Brainy saw Dreamy with the kite and asked, "Now what do you think you hope to accomplish with that kite?" "I'm going to sail into the stars and travel to strange new worlds, Brainy," Dreamy said. "Just you wait and see." "Oh, really, Dreamy...a kite so you can travel through the stars?" Brainy said while rolling his eyes. "Mark my smurfs, this idea of yours will never work. You don't know how far you'd have to smurf in order to reach the stars, and besides, what if there's no air for you to smurf once you reach the stars? Smurfs need oxygen in order to live, you know, so you would need to smurf yourself a helmet so that you can..." "Say, what's with the kite?" another Smurf came along to ask as a small group began to gather around Dreamy. "You planning to smurf an experiment or something?" "Dreamy thinks that he's going to able to travel to the stars with this smurfdiculous kite," Brainy answered. "A kite to travel through the stars?" another Smurf said. "Well, the best of luck to you, Dreamy." "Yeah, don't forget to smurf home when you can," a third Smurf said. Then suddenly the wind began to pick up, and Dreamy felt the kite being lifted into the air as it was borne about by the winds. He hung onto the string as tightly as he could as the kite pulled him up from the ground, causing him to rise high above the tallest trees near the village as his fellow Smurfs watched. "Yes, I did it!" Dreamy cheered. "I'm flying! I'm flying! But then he saw that he was flying straight into a storm cloud, and that he couldn't steer himself away from the lightning bolt that eventually struck the kite, reducing it to cinders. "Uh-oh, I'm not flying," Dreamy said to himself before he fell straight to the ground. The Smurfs who watched Dreamy take off into the sky now gathered around him where he had landed and laughed at him. "That was certainly a smurfy flight, followed by a real smurfy landing," one of the Smurfs said. "You see, Dreamy, I told you that this thing wasn't going to work, just like I told another Smurf that he was never going to fly," Brainy said in his usual condescending tone. "But you had to smurf the hard way, of which you are only fortunate that you can smurf away from, because if it weren't for such you wouldn't be here to smurf from your failure, and besides, as Papa Smurf always says..." "I'm not through yet," Dreamy said, ignoring Brainy and the jeers of his fellow Smurfs. "If there's a way I can smurf to the stars, I will find it."
"And so Dreamy tried something else, such as smurfing himself a flying broom," Smurfette told Psycheliana. "The only thing he needed was a spell to make the broom fly, and since your Grandpa Smurf wasn't going to let any Smurf go into his laboratory to smurf anything related to magic, Dreamy had to wait for him to leave the laboratory before he smurfed in there to find the spell." And as Smurfette continued her story, Psycheliana saw Dreamy waiting outside Papa Smurf's laboratory and watching for the moment when he would leave it with the door left open. Soon enough Papa Smurf had walked out of the laboratory, leaving Dreamy with hopefully enough time to look for the spell. It took only a few minutes to find the book that he wanted and leave the laboratory before Papa Smurf returned. He went out into the forest with the broom and the spell book. "Ah, here it is," Dreamy said after he opened the book and looked through its pages until he found the spell he was looking for. "'Spell to make brooms fly: lay an olive-wood broom on the ground facing east and west...'" He placed the broom on the ground in the manner that the book told him to. "Okay, what next? '...and say the following spell in a loud and clear voice: Hocus, pocus, shazam, abracadabrasmurf!'" The instant Dreamy said the magic words, though, the broom started flying without a passenger on it. "Hey, come back here!" he cried out as he chased after the broom. The broom flew through the village, causing the Smurfs to suddenly dodge or dart out of its way to avoid being hit by it. Only Grouchy was hit by the broom from behind, and Dreamy stepped on Grouchy who was lying on the ground while Dreamy was chasing after the broom. "I hate flying brooms," Grouchy said. The broom then entered a Smurf's house, knocking over a kettle onto a Smurf's head. That Smurf was struggling to get the kettle off his head while Dreamy chased the broom around inside the house until finally he seized it. The broom took Dreamy up through the chimney and up into the sky. "Oh yes, now I'm really flying this time," Dreamy said, sounding very excited. But then Dreamy and the broom both collided into a tree, and he found himself falling once more to the ground. The Smurfs again gathered around him where he had landed and laughed at him. "That was certainly another smurfy flight, followed by another real smurfy landing," one of the Smurfs said. "I'm not finished yet, Smurfs," Dreamy said. "I'll find a way to smurf to the stars or my name isn't Dreamy Smurf."
"After a few more ideas and attempts, Liana, Uncle Dreamy turned to asking your Grandpa Smurf if there was a way through magic that he can travel through the stars," Smurfette said. Then Psycheliana saw Dreamy knocking on Papa Smurf's door, looking like he was very frustrated. Papa Smurf opened and saw who it was. "Oh, it's you, Dreamy Smurf," he said. "What is it that you want?" "Papa Smurf, I've been trying to find a way that I can travel through the stars, and so far none of my ideas have smurfed," Dreamy said. "I'm wondering if there's something in your spell books that can help me." "Hmmm, to travel through the stars," Papa Smurf said to himself, stroking his beard. "I may have the kind of spell that you're looking for. Come inside my laboratory and I'll see if I can find it in my books." Dreamy went inside and watched as Papa Smurf looked through one of his books. "Let's see...'Astrology', 'The Comets', 'Influence Of The Moon', 'Shooting Stars'...ah, here it is! 'What You Need To Travel Through The Macrocosm.'" He took a moment to look at all the steps that the spell covered. "Oh my...this spell seems to be very complicated. Are you sure that you'd want me to smurf you all the steps for completing it, Dreamy?" "Please, Papa Smurf, if it can help me smurf to the stars, I would like to hear every step," Dreamy said, sounding insistent. "Very well then," Papa Smurf said before he began reading. "'First: drink every morning a pint of dew collected from the web woven by a male tarantula. Second: find a moonstone at the precise moment of a solar eclipse. Third: crush the moonstone delicately with your little finger while making joyful shouts. Fourth: wait until the powder turns to salt, which should take at least a hundred years. Fifth: drop a pinch of this salt onto the tail of a comet. Sixth: at the same time, make a tomcat say three times the magic word "Secakejukeuacehepaozreupahr". Seventh: don't be discouraged. Eighth:...'" But as Papa Smurf turned to see if Dreamy was paying any attention, he noticed that the young Smurf was gone.
Smurfette was out near the forest collecting flowers when she noticed Dreamy walking out toward the forest by himself. He looked rather depressed. "Oh, Dreamy, you look so blue today," Smurfette said sympathetically. "Is there something wrong with you?" "I've just been with Papa Smurf, asking if there was a way through magic that I can smurf through the stars, Smurfette," Dreamy answered as they sat down with each other next to a tree. "He told me that the spell would be complicated, but I had no idea how complicated it would really be." "Surely there must be a way for your birthday wish to come true, Dreamy," Smurfette said. "But how am I going to smurf it?" Dreamy said. "Every method that I have smurfed so far isn't working, and trying to smurf it through magic is next to impossible for me. Let's face it...I'm never going to smurf my birthday wish coming true, not ever in this lifetime." "Please don't give up on your birthday wish, Dreamy Smurf," Smurfette said. "I'm sure that you'll find a way to..." Then Dreamy saw a seed from a nearby tree spinning its way down to the ground. He picked it up and looked at it when finally inspiration hit him. "Yes, that's it! Why didn't I smurf of that before?" "Smurf of what before, Dreamy?" Smurfette asked. "I'm going to smurf me a rocket ship that will smurf me to the stars," Dreamy said, sounding very excited. He then kissed Smurfette on the cheek. "Thanks, Smurfette. I knew you would be a big help." Smurfette watched as Dreamy raced into the village, unsure of what she actually did to help Dreamy.

Chapter 2
"And so your Uncle Dreamy smurfed days smurfing inside a barricaded area in the village, building his rocket ship," Smurfette told Psycheliana. "He smurfed tools from Handy, wood from Carpenter, and metal from Smithy to make his smurfship, as he called it, into a reality. Yet none of us were allowed to see what the thing smurfed like until it was ready." Then Psycheliana saw as Smurfette continued her story the Smurfs gathered around outside the barricaded area, talking to each other while listening to Dreamy doing his construction work. They were all stricken with curiosity about seeing the thing that Dreamy was building in private. "Gosh, I wonder why Dreamy won't let us smurf whatever it is that he's building," Clumsy said as he stood around with the gathered crowd. "Well, whatever it is, Clumsy, I can only guarantee you that it's not going to work," Brainy said. "I even asked Dreamy if he wanted my help in the construction of this mysterious invention, but oh no, he isn't willing to accept help even from me, the most mechanically-inclined Smurf in the village." "Mechanically-inclined," Duncan snorted. "If you're truly as mechanically-inclined as you smurf you are, you'd be putting your smurf where your mouth is and smurfing the inventions yourself instead of just smurfing about them like you usually do." "Has anyone tried to smurf a peek at what Dreamy's building?" Smurfette asked. "Sneaky did, but all that he smurfed for his troubles was a cloud of black soot in his smurf, my dear Smurfette," Tapper said. "Of course, that didn't stop him from trying to trick other Smurfs into thinking that he has seen Dreamy's new invention." "Aye, and I bet that some of those Smurfs that were tricked weren't very happy with Sneaky afterward," Duncan said with a chuckle. "I just hope that Dreamy would unveil his invention soon," Vanity said. "The suspense from all this waiting is just killing me." "Ah, don't smurf your knickers in a knot over it, laddie," Duncan said. "If Dreamy wants this to be the best invention he's ever smurfed, he'll unveil it when it's smurf and ready, and not a moment before." At that moment, Papa Smurf appeared as he was walking through the village inspecting everything. "Okay, my little Smurfs, I think it's time that we smurfed Dreamy his time alone to smurf his project while you smurf back to your own duties like good little Smurfs," he said. "Yes, Papa Smurf," every Smurf in the group said together.
"And so we smurfed ourselves busy until the day when Dreamy had Harmony announce the unveiling of his smurfship, Liana," Smurfette continued. Then Psycheliana saw Harmony stand in the center of the village with a drum kit to get every Smurf's attention before he unrolled one of his parchments. "Hear ye, hear ye, this is a public announcement," he said in a loud voice. "Smurf three leaves of sarsaparilla in a boiling pot, then add a smurf and a few cloves..." He stopped himself when he realized just what he was reading. "Oh, excuse me...that was the recipe that Culinary had smurfed me." He put that parchment aside and picked up the other one to read. "Here smurfs. Dreamy the Astro Smurf has now invited the Smurfs to the unveiling of his smurfship, where he will smurf to the stars and fulfill his birthday wish. Make sure every Smurf knows about it." The Smurfs sounded so excited that they went to where the barricaded area in the village was located to see for themselves. With part of the fence removed, they looked in amazement at the tall red cylindrical vehicle with the metal capsule on the top. They have never seen anything like it before. "That's incredible," one of the Smurfs said. "But where's Dreamy?" "Look, here he smurfs," another Smurf said. And the crowd of Smurfs watched as Dreamy arrived on the scene, wearing a white jumpsuit with a zipper down the front and a round glass helmet. "Gosh, Brainy, Dreamy sure looks funny with the fishbowl he's smurfing over his head," Clumsy said with a giggle. Brainy snorted. "Well, I don't think that this invention will work. Just you wait and see." Dreamy now stood before the invention he had worked so hard to build. "So, my fellow Smurfs, what do you think of the smurfship?" he asked the crowd of Smurfs. "With this smurfs the era of space travel, as I, Dreamy Smurf, will become the first Astro Smurf to reach the stars." "The first Astro Smurf?" all the Smurfs said together. Papa Smurf came to join the other Smurfs as they continued to look in wonder at Dreamy's invention. "So how does this invention work, Dreamy Smurf?" he asked. "Pedal power, Papa Smurf," Dreamy said. "I smurf in the cockpit and smurf the pedals, which in turn smurfs the gears in the transmission that smurfs the propeller at the base of the smurfship. That will smurf me all the propulsion that I will need to smurf this thing off the ground and smurf up into the sky where it will smurf into the stars." "Oh," Papa Smurf said, disguising how he felt about Dreamy's explanation of the craft's mechanism. "Well, have a smurf journey and smurf home when you can," he finally said. "Thanks, Papa Smurf," Dreamy said before he started to climb the ladder up to the door that led into the cockpit. The other Smurfs just simply watched as Dreamy entered the craft and closed the door behind him. "This is just so exciting," Smurfette said. "I can't wait to see Dreamy's birthday wish come true at last." "Right, like this invention's really going to smurf that, Smurfette," Brainy said. "Oh, put a smurf in it, Brainy," Smurfette said. "You're just jealous because he smurfed of this idea and you didn't." "What's there to be jealous about, Smurfette?" Brainy said. "It's just simple rational thinking that an invention like this is never going to smurf off the ground." "Well, I'm going to smurf Dreamy the benefit of a doubt and smurf some faith that this thing will fly, Brainy Smurf," Duncan said. "All that we can hope for is the best, my friends," Tapper said. Inside, Dreamy seated himself at the controls, which consisted of handlebars and bicycle pedals, before he started the countdown. "10...9...8...7...6...5...4...3...2...1...smurf!" And then as Dreamy turned the pedals, the Smurfs saw that the propeller at the base of the smurfship started to spin around and around. But as they could also see, the ship isn't wasn't lifting from the ground. "What did I tell you, Smurfette?" Brainy said. "I was right, I was right." "Oh, yeah, sure...'I was right, I was right'," Smurfette said in a tone that mocked Brainy. "Well, so much for Dreamy's invention, Handy," Hefty said as he stood beside his brother. "Just smurf it a moment, Hefty," Handy said. "Maybe he just needs to smurf the propeller faster." Dreamy looked out one of the windows in the cockpit and saw that his ship was still on the ground, not moving anywhere. "Maybe I need to smurf this thing faster," he said to himself as he turned the pedals faster and faster, making the propeller spin faster and faster. The Smurfs' hats were now flapping in the wind that the propeller was generating. "It's sure smurfing up a lot of wind, Handy, but it's still not smurfing off the ground," Hefty said. "Boy oh smurf, I just don't get it," Handy said as he gave Dreamy's invention a scrutinizing look. "Where could Dreamy have smurfed wrong when it came to smurfing this?" "Wow, this breeze sure feels much smurfy with Dreamy's smurfship making it," Clumsy said. "I hate Dreamy's smurfship smurfing breezes," Grouchy said. After about a hour or so of the crowd of Smurfs getting impatient with watching Dreamy's smurfship, one of them finally said, "Look! The propellers are smurfing down!" The Smurfs watched as the propellers slowed down until they came to a stop. Then Dreamy came out of the ship, looking exhausted and depressed. He climbed down the ladder, took the helmet off his head, and slowly walked back to his house with his head hung low. Papa Smurf sighed as he watched Dreamy walk off. "I didn't want to tell him this, but I had a feeling that his smurfship was never going to smurf off the ground, my little Smurfs," he said. "We might as well smurf back home, since there's nothing more for us to smurf here." The Smurfs all left the area, talking among themselves about the failure of Dreamy's smurfship. Smurfette left with Tapper and Duncan, feeling rather upset over the whole thing. "Poor Dreamy," she said over tears. "It was his birthday wish to smurf to the stars. I can't believe that he couldn't fulfill that wish that he wanted so badly." "I feel nothing but sympathy for Dreamy right now, my dear Smurfette," Tapper said, trying to comfort her. "To think of all the effort that he had smurfed into this invention, only to find out that it doesn't smurf, must be truly heartsmurfing for him." "Maybe some sarsaparilla ale will make the laddie feel better about himself, but who knows?" Duncan said. "Anyway, I feel like I could smurf a bit of the ale right now, if not for Dreamy's sake." "Well, I knew all along that Dreamy's smurfship was never going to smurf off the ground," Brainy said in his usual self-important tone. "I tried to tell him that it wasn't going to smurf, but did he listen to me? Oh no! The failure of the smurfship only goes to smurf my point that Smurfs are never meant to smurf to the stars." Hefty and Tuffy were within earshot of Brainy when they heard him speak. "Could you smurf on for just a moment?" Hefty said to Tuffy. "Even Papa Smurf would agree to my opinion on this, because Papa Smurf is always right," Brainy continued on, "and Papa Smurf knows what's best for every Smurf and..." Suddenly Brainy got flung to the far side of the village. "...and sometimes the truth really hurts," Brainy said after he had landed. Hefty dusted off his hands after hurling Brainy as he rejoined Tuffy. "There! Now as we were smurfing..."
"And so for the next few days, your Uncle Dreamy has been smurfing inside his house, with nobody to talk to but Papa Smurf," Smurfette told Psycheliana. "Me and some of his closest friends were really concerned for him, as we were wondering what's smurfing on with him." As Smurfette continued her story, Psycheliana saw that Tapper, Duncan, and Smurfette were waiting outside Dreamy's house during one of Papa Smurf's visits. Soon he emerged with a grim look on his face. "Well, how is the laddie smurfing, Papa?" Duncan asked. "Unfortunately, still the same," Papa Smurf answered as he closed the door to Dreamy's house. "He constantly smurfs about his smurfship, and then suddenly he smurfs for several hours without smurfing a single word. I fear if this smurfs up, he's going to suffer a nervous smurfdown." "Surely there's something we can smurf for him, isn't there, Papa Smurf?" Tapper asked. "I'm afraid there's nothing we can smurf, Tapper," Papa Smurf said. "He's hitched himself to a wagon, and now he'll never be happy unless he can accomplish this one dream which smurfs to be impossible." "But that's his birthday wish, Papa Smurf, and birthday wishes are supposed to come true," Smurfette said. "I don't smurf how you can ever make him believe that he can never have that..." "Make him believe," Papa Smurf said to himself as he thought over something in his mind. Tapper and Duncan noticed that Papa Smurf was inspired by Smurfette's words, as his eyes suddenly flashed wide. "Papa Smurf, what is it that you're smurfing of?" Tapper asked. "I have an idea, Tapper, but I'm going to need the whole village to cooperate with me on this," Papa Smurf said. "There may be a way that Dreamy's birthday wish can come true." "Oh, please, Papa Smurf, tell us what this idea of yours is," Smurfette said, sounding eager to know. Papa Smurf signaled Tapper, Duncan, and Smurfette to huddle closer together so that he could tell them what he had planned to do. "I don't know about this, Papa Smurf," Tapper said after he heard Papa Smurf's plan. "I feel like we may be deceiving poor Dreamy with what it is you're planning on smurfing." "Aw, come on there, laddie," Duncan said. "Would you rather see Dreamy in the smurf he's in forever because he couldn't smurf to the stars? I'm willing to smurf along with this idea." "And so am I, Duncan," Smurfette said. "You know what we have to do, my little Smurfs, so let the other Smurfs know as quickly as you can," Papa Smurf said. "I'll go smurf with Dreamy alone." "Aye, if you say so, Papa Smurf," Tapper said as he, Duncan, and Smurfette went off in different directions to tell their fellow Smurfs about Papa Smurf's plan.

Chapter 3
Soon Papa Smurf knocked on the door of Dreamy's house. Dreamy opened the door and saw who it was. "Oh, it's you, Papa Smurf," he said. "Is there something I can smurf for you?" "I just came here with a bit of good news for you, Dreamy," Papa Smurf said as Dreamy allowed him to enter. "I had Handy smurf over what went wrong with the smurfship of yours, to see why it wouldn't smurf off the ground. He smurfed a thorough examination of the ship's mechanisms, and he found out what was wrong and fixed it, so it should now smurf perfectly." Dreamy's eyes perked wide open when he heard this. "He did? You mean I can smurf off to the stars now?" "Of course you can, Dreamy," Papa Smurf said. "All your fellow Smurfs are now waiting for you to try again." "Awesome!" Dreamy shouted, feeling excited again. "Just let me smurf on my suit and I shall be ready." He went into his closet and put on his jumpsuit and helmet, and then he grabbed Papa Smurf by the hand and dragged him out of his house as he rushed back toward his smurfship. Papa Smurf followed behind Dreamy, glad to see that part of his plan is now working. "Handy, you're a real life-smurfer," Dreamy said as he greeted his fellow Smurf. "How can I thank you enough for fixing my smurfship?" "Oh, it was nothing, Dreamy, really," Handy said. "Smurf me, what did you smurf that was wrong with my smurfship?" Dreamy asked. Handy looked a little uncomfortable trying to answer. "Well...uh...you see...it's rather difficult to smurf it to you in full detail. It was a matter of smurfing some adjustments...these included the gears that...uh...that..." "I'm sure you'll want to smurf all the details later, Dreamy," Papa Smurf said, pulling Dreamy away from Handy. "Right now your first smurf is more important. And to celebrate this occasion, I would like you to smurf a glass of smurfberry juice in order to smurf you some strength." Dreamy saw that Papa Smurf produced a glass of juice for him to drink. "Uh, no thanks, Papa Smurf," Dreamy said. "I'm really not that thirsty." "You sure you wouldn't want to smurf it for me, Dreamy, seeing how I prepared it just the way that you like it?" Smurfette said with a persuasive voice. "Uh, now that you've mentioned it, Smurfette...," Dreamy said, taking the glass from Papa Smurf's hand. "Well, here's a toast to my first smurf into outer smurf." He tried to drink the glass of juice, but instead spilled it onto his helmet as he was still wearing it. The other Smurfs laughed at Dreamy's mishap, but Smurfette just sighed with a look of disappointment. "Oh, Dreamy, how could you forget to smurf your helmet off?" she said. Papa Smurf became a little upset. "Quick, smurf me another glass of the juice," he ordered while Dreamy removed his helmet to wipe the juice off it. Dreamy was too distracted to notice Vino handing Papa Smurf another glass of smurfberry juice. "Here you smurf, Dreamy," Papa Smurf said, handing Dreamy the glass. "And this time, don't smurf any of it on you." After Dreamy drank the entire glass, he put his helmet back on and climbed up into the cockpit, waving every Smurf goodbye before he got behind the controls again and pushed the pedals to get the propeller spinning again. "Quick, every Smurf, get a fire smurfing and start rocking the ship," Papa Smurf said. "We need to make Dreamy believe that his smurfship is smurfing into the sky." As the Smurfs rushed to obey Papa Smurf, Brainy and Clumsy collided into each other. "Clumsy, where were you when the brains were smurfed out?" Brainy complained. "Uh, gee, Brainy, I don't know," Clumsy began to answer before Brainy pulled his friend's hat over his eyes. As Dreamy continued to pedal his ship, he could feel his ship rocking this way and that, and he could see clouds outside his windows. "I must be smurfing really high into the atmosmurf right now," he said to himself, pleased with his efforts. Papa Smurf watched his little Smurfs rock the ship and send smoke clouds up into the sky when he noticed something. "That sleeping potion that I have smurfed into the smurfberry juice must be smurfing a long time smurfing an effect," he said to himself. Then soon Dreamy started feeling something. "Huh? What's smurfing on? All of a sudden, I'm feeling a bit sleepy," he said to himself. He continued to pedal on, but he found himself yawning as his eyelids were getting heavy. "It must be the altitude...that's smurfing this...can't keep myself..." And then soon his pedaling came to a stop as he fell asleep at the controls. "Papa Smurf, the propeller has stopped spinning," Tapper reported. "Good...now the sleeping potion has smurfed," Papa Smurf said. "Hefty, Tuffy, I want you two to smurf into the cockpit and smurf Dreamy back to his house." "Right away, Papa Smurf," Hefty said as he and Tuffy climbed up the ladder to get Dreamy out of the smurfship and carry him back to his house. "When Dreamy is smurfed back home, my little Smurfs, the next part of the plan is to smurf the entire smurfship apart," Papa Smurf said. "Smurf apart the entire smurfship?" the Smurfs said together. "You can't be serious, Papa Smurf," one of the Smurfs said. "That's going to smurf a good amount of work to smurf that." "Are you sure that we need to smurf this?" another Smurf asked. "If Papa Smurf says that we need to smurf apart the smurfship, then we need to smurf it apart," Brainy said. "And I always obey Papa Smurf without question, because Papa Smurf always knows what he's smurfing, and..." "Look, do you want to help Dreamy fulfill his dream of smurfing to the stars or not?" Papa Smurf asked. "I certainly do, Papa Smurf, and I'm going to smurf it even if I'm the only Smurf that will," Smurfette said. "That's what I'm going to smurf as well, lassie," Duncan said. "Although I may disagree with Papa Smurf's plan, I'm going to smurf it my full support," Tapper said. Soon the other Smurfs decided that they were going to help as well...all except for Grouchy, who was seen starting to walk away. "I hate smurfing Dreamy's dream to come true," he said. "Oh no, you don't!" one of the Smurfs said, grabbing Grouchy by the arm. "You're going to help us!" "That doesn't mean that I have to like it," Grouchy said. "Make sure that you number each piece of the smurfship when you smurf it apart, my little Smurfs," Papa Smurf said as the other Smurfs went to get their tools.
"And so we smurfed the whole afternoon getting Dreamy's smurfship disassembled, Liana," Smurfette said. "We weren't sure what your Grandpa Smurf wanted to smurf with the smurfship until the disassembly was complete, but we had to trust that he knew what he was smurfing." Then Psycheliana saw the disassembly of the smurfship in progress, as the Smurfs carefully took apart everything piece by piece and numbered it according to Papa Smurf's instructions. By the time the sun was going down, Tapper, Duncan, and Smurfette reported to Papa Smurf. "The smurfship has been completely smurfed apart, Papa Smurf," Tapper said. "What do you want us to smurf with the parts of the smurfship, Papa Smurf?" Duncan asked. "We'll smurf them into carts and then smurf them to a place that I alone smurf about, Duncan," Papa Smurf answered. "Oh, goody, a secret place," Smurfette said. "Is it far to smurf to, Papa Smurf?" "It's only a two-day journey, Smurfette," Papa Smurf answered. He looked up at the sky and realized that the day was over. "Okay, my little Smurfs, it's time for bed. We have a long journey ahead of us, so I want you all to smurf a good night's sleep." "Yes, Papa Smurf," every Smurf said as they headed back to their houses. "And in the meantime, what are you going to be smurfing, Papa Smurf?" Tapper asked. "I'm going to be smurfing in my laboratory, preparing something for our journey, Tapper," Papa Smurf answered. "I do not want to be dissmurfed for any reason." Tapper nodded with understanding. "Aye, Papa Smurf," he said before he, Duncan, and Smurfette headed to their homes. "And so in his laboratory, your Grandpa Smurf worked hard on that special preparation that he was intending to use for our journey to fulfill Dreamy's birthday wish," Smurfette said to Psycheliana. "Just around the time of midnight, the preparation was ready." Then Psycheliana saw that Papa Smurf stood before a mirror with a sample of the preparation in a test tube in his hand. "Might as well see if this smurfs or not," he said to himself before he drank the sample. Suddenly there came a transformation, and as Papa Smurf could see in his mirror, he looked completely different, though Psycheliana couldn't see what Papa Smurf had transformed himself into. "It works!" Papa Smurf said excitedly, pleased with his efforts. "Oh, if only my little Smurfs could see me now..."
By morning, Papa Smurf had Harmony summon every Smurf in the village to awaken, as he had intended for them to join in the adventure of making Dreamy Smurf's smurfday wish coming true. "Hefty, I want you in charge of making sure all the parts of Dreamy's ship are smurfed into carts," Papa Smurf said. "Greedy, you smurf the supplies from the storehouse, because we're going to need them for as long as it takes to smurf this trip." "Yes, sir, Papa Smurf," Hefty and Greedy said together. "Okay, every Smurf, let's get smurfing," Papa Smurf said. "I'll go check on Dreamy to make sure he's still asleep." He headed over to Dreamy's house, where Tapper and Duncan were watching over him. "Is he still asleep?" he asked. "So far, the laddie's been out like a light, Papa Smurf," Duncan reported. "Good," Papa Smurf said. "Let's get a stretcher in here so we can smurf him along with us without waking him up." "I just hope you know what you're smurfing, Papa Smurf," Tapper said. Then suddenly they heard Dreamy going from peaceful snoring to starting to wake up. "Quick, Tapper, smurf me the smurfberry juice potion," Papa Smurf said. Tapper handed the bottle to Papa Smurf, who quickly uncorked it and forced it down Dreamy's throat. Soon he went back to peaceful sleeping again. "Well, that was close, Papa Smurf," Duncan said as the three Smurfs sighed with relief. "How long are we going to have to keep Dreamy asleep like this?" Tapper asked. "Until we smurf him to that place where we need to smurf him, Tapper," Papa Smurf answered. "We're going to need to smurf more of the potion in order to keep him asleep." "Aye, Papa Smurf, you can count on me to smurf it," Tapper replied, understanding. Medic then brought the stretcher to carry Dreamy, which he and Duncan placed him on. "Don't worry about us there, laddie," Duncan said to the sleeping Smurf. "Just keep dreaming of the stars and we'll smurf you there." Papa Smurf watched as Medic and Duncan carried Dreamy out of his house. He then went out to see how the other Smurfs were doing with the rest of the preparations. "Everything is all set, Papa Smurf," Hefty said. "The carts are all loaded up, and we're smurf to go." "All right, my little Smurfs, let's smurf out!" Papa Smurf said loudly.

Chapter 4
"And so we smurfed off on our journey to make Dreamy's birthday wish to come true, Liana," Smurfette said. "Over hill and dale we smurfed the carts that contained the parts to Dreamy's smurfship, and Duncan and Medic carried Dreamy on a stretcher, making sure he smurfs asleep long enough until we reach our destination." Then Psycheliana saw the Smurfs with their carts following Papa Smurf as he directed them on where they needed to go. After a while of pulling carts and carrying Dreamy on a stretcher, one of the Smurfs asked, "Is it much farther, Papa Smurf?" "It's not far now," Papa Smurf said. "Be brave, my little Smurfs, and think of Dreamy being happy knowing that his birthday wish is going to come true." "I hate making Dreamy's smurfday wish coming true," Grouchy said. As they crossed through the river, another Smurf asked, "Is it much farther, Papa Smurf?" "It's not far now," Papa Smurf said. As they pulled the carts up a hill, a third Smurf asked, "Is it much farther, Papa Smurf?" "It's not far now," Papa Smurf said, sounding like he's getting tired of hearing the question. Soon they heard, "Hey, heads up, Smurfs! Dreamy is waking up!" Three Smurfs knew what that meant. "Quick, the smurfberry potion!" one of them said as they raced toward the stretcher. "Just kidding," Jokey said, laughing at the sight of their reaction. "He's still asleep!" This made the three Smurfs so angry with Jokey that they punched him in the face. "Boy, some Smurfs just don't have a sense of humor," Jokey muttered.
By nightfall, the Smurfs made camp and slept underneath the starry sky. "Is it much farther, Papa Smurf?" one of them asked. "YES, IT IS!" Papa Smurf shouted. "Now smurf off to sleep." Tapper, who was sleeping next to Smurfette, noticed that she hasn't closed her eyes. "My dear Smurfette, you should be smurfing your rest now," he quietly spoke to her. "I can't help but wonder what Dreamy must be dreaming of right now, Tapper," Smurfette said. "He must be imagining himself smurfing through the stars in his smurfship, smurfing those strange new worlds that he so very much wanted to visit." "I have to admit, it is a very compelling dream to smurf," Tapper said. "Sometimes I dream of myself smurfing off into heaven and seeing the Almighty for how He actually appears. There's not a day that smurfs by that I don't even think of what that day would be like." "But doesn't your book say that we all have to die before we can see the Almighty?" Smurfette asked. "Actually, the holy book says that not all of us, meaning believers in the Almighty, will die, but all of us will be changed...in an instant, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet, for the trumpet shall sound, and the dead shall be raised, and they shall be smurfed as incorruptible," Tapper said. "The Almighty's Son Himself says that whoever believes in Him shall not see death...whether that will be physical death, which will happen until He returns, or the 'second death' in the Lake of Fire." "Oh, that sounds really fascinating, Tapper," Smurfette said. "But would such a thing actually happen, that you may not even see death?" "I honestly don't know what the Almighty has in smurf for me, other than what He reveals to me day by day, my dear Smurfette," Tapper said. "Right now my only concern is for Dreamy to be happy to smurf his birthday wish being fulfilled, if although only through this fantasy that we're smurfing him through." "I just hope in the end that Dreamy is happy, Tapper," Smurfette said. Another Smurf named Orbit couldn't sleep either. He also kept looking up at the stars, imagining what Dreamy is dreaming of right now while he's still asleep. Already his mind was thinking of words to a song that he would want to write about Dreamy's experience: "Earth below us, drifting, falling, smurfing weightless, calling, calling home," he sang to himself quietly.
"Oh, excuse me, am I interrupting something important?" a familiar voice asked as Empath, Smurfette, and the two Smurf children were leaving the Imaginarium. "It's Uncle Narrator!" Miracle said, as he noticed who it was. "It figures that you would have to be here, just like that," Psycheliana said. "That's just part of my job as the narrator, my young Smurflings," Narrator said. "Of course, being the busy Smurf that I am, it hardly smurfs me any time to settle down with my dearest wife Storyteller, even though she also enjoys the work that I smurf." "This smurf senses that there were parts to this story of Dreamy's birthday wish that you alone have knowledge of, and that pertains to knowledge of our constant enemy Gargamel," Empath said. "You are very correct, my friend," Narrator said. "While the Smurfs were celebrating Dreamy's birthday, Gargamel was busy smurfing up a crystal ball that would allow him to find the Smurfs wherever they happen to be. He hoped to have found them in the village, but upon his first try of smurfing into the crystal ball, the only thing he smurfed was an empty village, because every Smurf was at Tapper's Tavern celebrating Dreamy's birthday. Of course, this wouldn't stop Gargamel from trying to find the Smurfs, so he smurfed out into the forest to see if the crystal would smurf him on the right path." And as Narrator told that part of the story, Empath and Psycheliana both saw Gargamel in the forest carrying his crystal ball, following wherever it was guiding him to, with his cat Azrael following him. "I have no idea where it is that those revolting Smurfs are traveling to, Azrael, but it isn't going to stop me from capturing them one way or another," Gargamel said. "They're going to wish that they haven't double-crossed me by switching the bottles of my potions so that I got the shrinking formula instead of the giant-making formula." Azrael meowed something that sounded like he wasn't very concerned with the Smurfs. The both of them stopped when they came across a river. "I knew it...those Smurfs must have made their way across here. Follow me, Azrael...they can't be that far away from us." Azrael watched as his master waded into the water, and then tentatively stuck his paw into the water before pulling it back out, fearing having to go into the water. "Well, come along, Azrael, and don't be afraid of the water...it isn't going to kill you," Gargamel said, sounding impatient. Azrael backed himself up and then leaped over the water, landing right on top of his master's head. "Hey, what are you doing?" Gargamel said, struggling to see where he was going. "Get off my head this instant!" Azrael leaped off his master's head and onto dry land, causing Gargamel to fall on his back into the water. "Ooooh, you miserable feline fleabag, I swear if I can get my hands on you right now, I'm going to turn you into a cat fur pillow," Gargamel growled as he sat up in the water, clutching his crystal ball while giving Azrael an angry stare. Azrael just covered his eyes in fear of the thought of his master ever doing that to him. Gargamel got himself out of the water and back on the path of following the Smurfs. He could see their little tiny footprints on the ground leading away from the river. He knew that he will catch up to them.
"Meanwhile, your Grandpa Smurf got us smurfing again toward our destination, which we wouldn't see until we smurfed close enough to it," Smurfette said to Psycheliana, who then saw the Smurfs waking up from their resting place to resume their journey. "Smurf o' the morning to you, my fellow Duncan," Tapper said as he greeted his fellow Smurf upon rising. "All set for another day of our journey?" "How's the laddie been smurfing?" Duncan asked. "So far he's still been smurfing, but I don't know how long it will be before he's in need of another bottle of smurfberry potion," Tapper reported. "By the way, I notice that you have smurfed your sideburns off." "Aye, that was what Papa had smurfed me to do, though I don't understand for what reason, Tapper," Duncan said, rubbing the sides of his face. "I'm a feeling a wee bit naked without the whiskers." Tapper chuckled. "I'm sure that it will only be temporary that you will have to smurf without the whiskers, though that also makes me curious as to what Papa Smurf's plan is for making Dreamy believe that he is smurfing through the stars." "I'm just hoping it's worth my having to smurf off part of my Smurfhood when it's all said and smurfed, laddie," Duncan said. He then noticed Tapper looking around rather nervously. "Now what's the matter with you?" "I have a distinct feeling in my spirit that we're not alone on this journey, my friend," Tapper said. "It would not be wise to tarry too long here." "Okay, my little Smurfs, it's time that we're up and smurfing," Papa Smurf said as he packed up his sleeping bag. The other Smurfs groaned as they also packed up their sleeping bags and got back to pulling the carts in the caravan while Medic joined Duncan in carrying Dreamy on the stretcher. "All this traveling is really smurfing me out," Lazy said after a short while. "I could sure use a good bit of smurfnip and a nap." "I hear you, Lazy," Nabby said. "I feel so hungry that I can't wait to stop and smurf our food supply." "I hate traveling so far," Grouchy said. "This makes me think of the exodus that the Almighty had smurfed His people through when they smurfed out of Egypt, my fellow Smurfs," Tapper said. "They knew not exactly where they were smurfing when they were smurfing to the Promised Land, so they had to smurf their trust in their leader Moses." "You and your stories about this imaginary God of yours," Hefty snorted. "I don't see that there's any point in them except to make people believe in something that isn't there." "He is very much everpresent, just like the air you breathe, my fellow Hefty," Tapper said. "You can't see it, but you know that it's there, and you can feel it everywhere you smurf. It is also the same with the Almighty." "I don't feel anything except that what you're smurfing me is a waste of time, Tapper," Hefty said. "I will continue to pray for your eyes to be opened, no matter how long it may smurf," Tapper said. "Then you will know without a doubt that the Almighty is real, and that He cares for you." Then suddenly Papa Smurf brought the caravan to a stop. "That's it! That's where we need to go!" he said, pointing to a mountain up ahead. The Smurfs all looked at the mountain and noticed something about it. "It's a volcano!" one Smurf said. "Of course it is," Papa Smurf said. "But Papa Smurf, haven't you told us that volcanoes are dangerous because they smurf out hot rocks and fire and stuff like that?" Smurfette asked. "Yes, I did, Smurfette, but we do not need to fear this volcano, because this one is extinct," Papa Smurf said. "Are...are you sure, Papa Smurf?" Scaredy asked. "Well, of course I am sure, Scaredy," Papa Smurf said, sounding like he was not wishing to explain himself any further. "Let's keep ourselves smurfing, shall we?" As the caravan continued onward, Hefty asked, "Do we have to smurf our carts all the way to the top of this volcano, Papa Smurf?" "Fortunately we don't, Hefty," Papa Smurf said. "I know a passage at the bottom where the lava once smurfed. We will smurf through that way." Soon they came to the entrance of the passage. "And there it is." Suddenly there was a loud roaring sound that startled the Smurfs, causing them to drop whatever it was they were carrying or pulling and run for their lives. "Yikes! The volcano awakes!" Scaredy shouted. "Smurf for your lives!" one Smurf cried out. "We're going to be barbecued Smurfs!" another Smurf yelled. "Stop, my little Smurfs!" Papa Smurf commanded. "There's nothing to be afraid of here. That is only the sound of thunder. There is a storm smurfing nearby." The Smurfs suddenly stopped running and returned to the carts with a feeling of relief. "I knew it myself, that it was only thunder," Brainy said. "Me too," Chatty said. "I was smurfing you Smurfs behind me to smurf back." "Yeah, a likely story, Chatty Smurf," Jokey said. The caravan proceeded again into the passage, which was so dark that they could barely see where they were going. "Oh, dear," Scaredy said with a lump in his throat. "If it isn't volcanoes that I'm afraid of, it's smurfing in complete darkness." "I can hardly smurf myself in here," Vanity said as he tried to look at himself in his mirror. "Smurfing smurfs, if I had only known we would be smurfing through here on this journey, I'd be smurfing a few words with Papa Smurf about it," Tuffy said, sounding a bit frustrated. "That's not a very nice thing to smurf about Papa Smurf, Tuffy," Brainy said, overhearing Tuffy's comment, "because he is only trying to smurf out for all us Smurfs and to get us to smurf the same for all our fellow Smurfs. In fact, I'm going to tell Papa Smurf about what you smurfed, because he desmurfs to be smurfed with respect and..." Tuffy picked Brainy up and hurled him far to the other side of the passage, where he saw that there was light. "Good work, Brainy," Papa Smurf said as he and the caravan reached the other side. They all came to a stop just as soon as they left the passage and entered the desolate area in the middle of the volcano. "Now the next thing we need to do is to smurf Dreamy's smurfship back together." Most of the Smurfs groaned, as they felt exhausted with having to pull all the carts into the volcano, but they nonetheless got started with rebuilding Dreamy's smurfship, making sure they had all the parts with them. Handy, who had memorized how the ship was built during the disassembly, was very instrumental as he instructed the other Smurfs in its reassembly. Soon, with the smurfship fully assembled, Papa Smurf had Grouchy and Jokey put Dreamy back into the cockpit with his helmet on, and to give him one more bottle of smurfberry potion. "Why do we have to smurf our tails off smurfing Dreamy to this volcano to make his birthday wish smurf true while he just sleeps?" Grouchy asked as he and Jokey set him back at the controls. "This is for the smurfs." "Wait a minute, Grouchy," Jokey said. "Do you know what's green, red, and yellow, with big eyes and long teeth?" "Uh...no, what?" Grouchy asked, wondering what Jokey is talking about. "Well, I don't know either, but I think I've seen it smurfing up under your hat," Jokey said. Grouchy jumped in fear and started swatting his hat while Jokey laughed at the sight. "I hate bugs!" Grouchy said. The two Smurfs then rejoined Papa Smurf to tell him that that part has been accomplished. "So what do we do now, Papa Smurf?" Clumsy asked. "We'll smurf up camp here and wait until Dreamy awakens, Clumsy," Papa Smurf said. "By the time that he does, he'll smurf that he is on another planet." "I don't see how he will, Papa Smurf, if all that Dreamy will see is just us," Smurfette said. "That is why I have smurfed this little formula along, my little Smurfs," Papa Smurf said, raising up a large bottle. "This will transform us all into...well, let's call them Swoofs." "Swoofs?!?" all the Smurfs said together. "I hate Swoofs," Grouchy said. "What's a Swoof, Papa Smurf?" Clumsy asked. "Here, let me show you," Papa Smurf said. And as he opened the bottle, a translucent green mist seeped out and covered Papa Smurf, transforming him until he no longer looked like a Smurf at all. All the Smurfs gasped at Papa Smurf's new appearance, which was an orange-skinned Smurf-like being with long white hair and a red furry loincloth. "Sacre bleu...that is truly a transformation!" Painter said. "Oh my...smurf about an extreme makeover," Vanity said. "I don't know about this," Tapper said. "I smurf the feeling that Dreamy is going to smurf through this masquerade and smurf the whole thing for what it really is." "Oh, don't be such a worrywart, laddie," Duncan said. "Dreamy's going to be fine, and so are we. I sure wouldn't mind smurfing myself like one of those Swoofs." "Oh boy, I can't wait to be a Swoof, Papa Smurf...I mean, Papa Swoof," Clumsy said excitedly. Papa Smurf chuckled. "You can just call me Grandpa Swoof, Clumsy." "Well, I certainly wouldn't mind being a Swoof if it will make Dreamy's birthday wish come true," Smurfette said. "Uh, is there anything different about being a Swoof, Papa Smurf?" Dimwitty asked. "I would have to assume that the only difference about being a Swoof is that you simply use the word swoof when you want to say smurf, Dimwitty," Brainy explained. "Other than that, only Papa Smurf really knows how a Swoof is supposed to act, since they obviously don't exist anywhere in the world, and furthermore..." "We'll figure out the rest, Brainy," Hefty said, interrupting his fellow Smurf. "This is smurfly going to be a lot of fun," Greedy said, sounding very eager. "Yeah, won't Dreamy really be surprised to find out!" Jokey said with a snicker. "We smurf this job right, Jokey, Dreamy will never have to find out," Handy said.

Chapter 5
"And so all your Uncle Smurfs, Liana, smurfed together and became Swoofs so that they could help Dreamy believe that he has been smurfed to another planet, much like the one you and Miracle were visiting in the Imaginarium," Smurfette said. "Of course, Gargamel was still smurfing after us with his crystal ball, but only Tracker and Sneaky noticed this when they were smurfing guard around the volcano to see who or what would try to ruin Dreamy's fantasy. Nevertheless, we smurfed up the place to make it smurf like it was where the Swoofs have smurfed, and by nightfall when Dreamy awoke, we were ready." Then Psycheliana saw in Smurfette's memory that Dreamy was now waking up in the capsule of his smurfship and noticed that everything was dark. "Huh? Where in the name of Smurf am I?" he said to himself. He tried to look out through one of his windows, but he couldn't see anything. "The last thing I remember before I smurfed out was that I was smurfing high into the clouds. Maybe if I smurf out of the smurfship, I'll know where I am right now." Dreamy stepped out of his smurfship to take a look, and soon was amazed by what he saw...a rocky landscape under a starlit sky. "I...I can't believe it!" he said to himself. "I'm on another planet! My dream has smurfed true...I'm so smurfy!" He climbed down from his smurfship so he could have a look around. Little did he know that at the same time he was being observed by beings that looked like Smurfs, but had orange skin with white painted circles around their mouths and black hair and wore yellow loincloths while brandishing spears. They just simply watched silently as Dreamy walked around and observed the area that his smurfship had landed in. "What a smurftastic landscape," Dreamy said to himself after a moment of observation. "This is one small step for Smurf, one giant leap for Smurfkind. I wonder if there's any kind of life around here." Suddenly Dreamy could hear someone or something screeching "Kaa-yaa!" in the distance. "THERE IS!" Dreamy yelped as he raced back to his smurfship in fear. But then, as he reached the ladder to climb back aboard his ship, he stopped to think. "Wait...I can't just smurf off and leave without smurfing who or what smurfs on this planet first. Who knows, maybe they are friendly." Dreamy decided to explore the planet, carefully heading in the direction where he heard the noise. He soon saw a bright light in the distance, and as he got closer he could see small beings huddled around fires, though he couldn't make out what those beings looked like as they appeared in shadow. "So what do I smurf?" Dreamy asked himself, pondering his next move as he continued to look at the beings. "Shall I smurf down and greet them or not?" He remembered hearing stories from Empath about the Psyches that he lived with in Psychelia, which made him curious to find out what the beings looked like. He couldn't imagine the beings on the planet he was now on being anything like the Psyches, but he couldn't go back home and not have anything to tell his fellow Smurfs about what he found on that strange new world. Maybe Empath would be impressed to know about those beings Dreamy had discovered when his friend comes back home for his yearly visits. "I might as well smurf the chance," Dreamy finally said as he bravely ventured toward the light in the distance. Suddenly a spear sliced through the air and struck the ground right in front of Dreamy, making him jump in fear. Immediately after, an orange-skinned black-haired being jumped down toward Dreamy, crying out "Kaa-yaaa!" before he picked up the spear and aimed its pointed end toward Dreamy. "Uh...hello, friend," Dreamy greeted, trying hard not to show any fear toward the stranger. "Me came in great big machine...vroom, vroom...me Smurf." He laughed nervously, not knowing what the being was going to do next. "And I'm a Swoof, of the tribe of Swoofs," the orange-skinned being said in a voice that sounded like Hefty's. "What are you swoofing here near our camp?" "Swoofing?" Dreamy said, realizing that the being could speak normally just like he could. "Oh, I get it. You see, I have long since smurfed of smurfing to other planets, so I have smurfed this smurfship to travel through outer smurf and..." "Well, you are my captive now, so I'm swoofing you to Grandpa Swoof," the Swoof responded fiercely. "He will know what to swoof with you, so go swoof before me, and don't be swoofing off, or I will swoof you before you know what swoofed you." Dreamy gulped as he realized he had no choice. The Swoof herded him in the direction of the light, looking like he was going to make good on his threat if Dreamy gave him any trouble. "Great Smurfness," Dreamy thought to himself. "Is this how my first trip into outer smurf is smurfing to end up?" Dreamy could see where the light was coming from that he was heading toward a village made of primitive huts, and there in the village were other Swoofs that were identical to the one who had intercepted him...all except for one, who had white hair and a white beard. Dreamy could see that this must be Grandpa Swoof, who was most likely the leader of the tribe. Dreamy and the Swoof who herded him into the village stopped as soon as they reached Grandpa Swoof. "Grandpa Swoof, I have swoofed this blue-swoofed tresswoofer outside our camp," the Swoof said. "Ahaaa," Grandpa Swoof said in a voice that sounded like Papa Smurf's, only fiercer. "So what swoofs you to swoof so close to our camp, swoofer?" "Well, as I was trying to smurf your Swoof, my name is Astro Smurf," Dreamy replied. "I have smurfed from another planet called Earth. I smurfed here on a smurfship that I have smurfed." "Hmmm," Grandpa Swoof said, stroking his beard while listening. "So what do you, my little Swoofs, swoof of this story?" "I think that he's swoofing a lot of nonswoof, Grandpa Swoof," a Swoof that sounded like Duncan McSmurf, but in a less refined manner, answered. "We'll have to swoof about this ourswoofs," a Swoof that sounded like Tapper added, also sounding a bit like a savage. And several other Swoofs also seemed to voice their agreement. "Very well, then," Grandpa Swoof said, directing his attention toward Dreamy. "You, do not swoof from that spot. We will decide what to swoof with you." And so Dreamy watched as the Swoofs gathered together around the campfire to have a solemn discussion about his fate. Dreamy looked on in fearful anticipation of what they may decide to do with him, of whether he would ever leave this planet alive. Around the campfire, carefully keeping their voices low so Dreamy wouldn't hear, the Swoofs spoke. "I think my plan is working, my little Smurfs," Grandpa Swoof said. "Oh boy, did you smurf the look on Dreamy's face?" one of the Swoofs said while laughing. "He's actually smurfing into the idea that we're real," a second Swoof said, also laughing. "Gee, I wonder where Dreamy was when the beans were handed out," a third Swoof said. "That's brains, Clumsy, not beans," a fourth Swoof said. As Dreamy continued to wait for the verdict, he heard a pleasant female voice like Smurfette's speak to him. "You swoof like someone I have only swoofed in my dreams, a swoof who has swoofed from the stars." Dreamy turned and saw what appeared to be a female Swoof, also with orange skin and black hair, but wearing a tunic instead of a loincloth. "Gosh, I didn't think there would be a Swoof like you among them," Dreamy said, awestruck by how beautiful she appeared despite resembling her male counterparts. The female Swoof giggled. "That's because I'm a Swoofette. What is your name?" "Uh, Astro Smurf...actually, it's Dreamy," he replied. "You don't smurf to be afraid of me." "Why should I be?" Swoofette said as she came closer. "You don't swoof to be anyone who's going to swoof anybody any harm here." "That's not what they think, Swoofette," Dreamy said. "But if this is all the time we have to smurf each other, I just want to let you know that I'm glad to smurf your acquaintance." Then suddenly Grandpa Swoof and the other Swoofs joined Dreamy as they ended their discussion. "So...what now?" Dreamy asked, anxious to know the verdict. "Well, we swoofed a good long swoof," Grandpa Smurf responded, "and we believe that you are swoofing the truth. So on beswoof of all the Swoofs...welcome!" He extended his hand toward Dreamy's and greeted him in friendship. He then turned toward the other Swoofs. "My little Swoofs, tonight we will swoof a great feast for our swoof of honor, the Astro Smurf." "KAA-YAAA!" all the Swoofs shouted excitedly, except for one that sounded like Grouchy, who just said, "I hate great feasts." As the Swoofs went off to prepare the celebratory feast to honor Astro Smurf, Grandpa Swoof said, "While we are waiting, tell me about this world that you swoof from." "You see, Earth is very big and it smurfs these giant beings called humans," Dreamy said. "They're not really much fun to be around. And then there's these beings like us, called the Smurfs. There's about a hundred of us and we all smurf in a small village together that's hidden in the forest. There's Greedy Smurf, Jokey Smurf, Lazy Smurf, Grouchy Smurf, and Brainy Smurf. Now Brainy Smurf is very annoying because he likes to smurf his words of wisdom to us all the time, always smurfing his finger, and he never smurfs us a moment of rest smurfing how smart he is!" "What?!? But I...," a Swoof that sounded like Brainy started to say before he was silenced. "And then there's Papa Smurf, who is the leader of the village," Dreamy said. "He smurfs a red suit and smurfs a big white beard, just like yours." "He does?" Grandpa Swoof asked. "Yeah, you should smurf him for yourself," Dreamy said. "He is so nice and smurfs a lot of things for us. I can't ever imagine what any Smurf would smurf without him...although between you and me, he does seem to smurf a little off his rocker. Not that we smurf anything unsmurfy of him, for after all, he is smurfing up in age and he does smurf to ramble on occasionally..." Just then, they could hear the other Swoofs laughing as they overheard Dreamy's description of Papa Smurf. Grandpa Swoof glared at them with great displeasure. "What's going on?" Dreamy asked. "What did I smurf that made them act that way?" Just then, one of the Swoofs approached, carrying a wooden spoon. "Everything is swoofy, Grandpa Swoof. We can now swoof the great feast," he said in a voice that sounded like Greedy's. "Excellent, excellent," Grandpa Swoof said, trying to forget that as Papa Smurf he was offended by hearing any Smurf, even Dreamy, talking about him as being old. "Shall I be your escort, Astro Smurf?" Swoofette asked, offering her arm around his. "Oh, by all means, Swoofette, I'm yours," Dreamy replied, pleased to have her company as they walked together to join the celebration.
"Meanwhile, trouble would soon be smurfing our way, and the name of that trouble was Gargamel," Narrator added. "Tracker and Sneaky were on duty to watch for any intruders in smurfing Dreamy's wish into a reality, and they would soon spot the evil wizard smurfing from a good distance off." Then Psycheliana saw the two Smurfs disguised as Swoofs looking out from over the top of the volcano upon the surrounding area, with Sneaky looking rather bored. "I didn't exactly smurf up for this duty when I wanted to help make Dreamy's birthday wish come true, Tracker," Sneaky said. "True, but we're the best watchsmurfs that the village has, and we're not going to let anything that we don't want smurf in to ruin the fun, even if we're not a part of it," Tracker said. "It's not that it isn't fun to be smurfing in on what Gargamel may be planning for us," Sneaky said. "But I'd rather be smurfing Empath's abilities if it would help me smurf out those plans without smurfing myself at risk of..." "Shhh, be quiet," Tracker said, silencing his partner while putting his hand to his ear. "I think I smurfed something in the distance." "You smurfed something? Are you sure?" Sneaky asked quietly. "It's a familiar voice that's smurfing closer to us...I think I heard him smurfing about a crystal ball smurfing him here," Tracker said. "That's got to be Gargamel," Sneaky said. "Who else would be smurfing this way?" In a faint voice, Tracker heard, "I swear to you, Azrael, that I can feel it in my bones. The Smurfs must be nearby in this mountain range, and wherever they are hiding themselves, I will find them, and I will capture them once and for all." "That's definitely Gargamel, Sneaky," Tracker said. "We'd better warn Papa Smurf before he smurfs any closer." "I'll be the one to tell Papa Smurf," Sneaky said. "You just smurf here and see where Gargamel is smurfing." Tracker nodded in agreement. "I sure don't want to see Papa Smurf get mad if this whole thing is all for smurf." He watched as Sneaky headed back down inside the volcano before he turned his attention again toward Gargamel's approach.
Meanwhile, back in the Swoof Village, Dreamy sat at the seat of honor with Grandpa Swoof as they enjoyed a meal together. The food was so great, it made Greedy's cooking seem pale by comparison. The Swoofs also put on music and dancing, which Dreamy enjoyed watching along with the other Swoofs. There was a fire-jumping game that Dreamy took part in, though fortunately nobody got hurt except for a Swoof that resembled Clumsy, who almost burned himself when he tried to jump over the fire. Even then, that Swoof was immediately taken care of and didn't suffer any serious injuries. Grandpa Swoof also put on a fireworks display with magic powder which dazzled the spectators. Dreamy couldn't believe that this must be how they honored guests of their village. "How are you enjoying the festivities, Astro Smurf?" Grandpa Swoof asked. "Oh, I feel like I'm smurfing the time of my life, Grandpa Swoof," Dreamy answered. "It's better than anything that I have smurfed back home." "Good...then tonight you must rest, for tomorrow is when you must swoof back home," Grandpa Swoof said. "Smurf back home?" Dreamy said. "Why would I want to smurf that? I've decided that I want to smurf here forever." "Forever?!?" Grandpa Swoof said, surprised to hear that response. "But you can't swoof here! You must..." "Grandpa Swoof, a word alone with you," one of the Swoofs said as he approached the elder Swoof's seat. "What is it?" Grandpa Swoof asked, until he realized that what he needed to hear was for his ears only. The Swoof whispered something in Grandpa Swoof's ear, which then made him very concerned. "Quick, swoof Astro Smurf to the guest house and don't let him out," he commanded. "We have a village emergency that we must swoof care of immediately." One of the Swoofs herded Dreamy away into the guest house and stood guard over it to make sure he didn't escape. Dreamy wasn't sure what the danger was that was coming to the village, but he had to put his trust that the Swoofs would take care of it.
When Dreamy was out of sight, Papa Smurf gathered the Smurfs together and spoke very low so that Dreamy wouldn't hear. "One of our lookouts have smurfed us that Gargamel is approaching, but what concerns me is that Dreamy wants to smurf here forever," he said. "Forever? But that's impossible, Papa Smurf!" Brainy said. "Yeah, we can't continue this charade forever, much fun as it really is," Hefty said. "I hate smurfing here forever," Grouchy said. "And I sure wouldn't want to be stuck smurfing like this forever," Vanity said. "We've got to smurf Dreamy the truth, Papa Smurf," Tapper suggested. "It's the least that we owe him to make him smurf the right decision." "Maybe not, laddie," Duncan said. "If Dreamy wants to smurf here forever, let's make it something that he has to smurf for." "Something he has to smurf for? You mean like a test?" Smurfette asked. "More like a challenge, lassie," Duncan replied. "If he wants to live like a Swoof, then he has to prove that he's worthy of being a Swoof." "That is a smurfy idea, Duncan," Papa Smurf said. "We'll have to smurf up this plan the first thing in the morning. For now, though, we've got an evil wizard to smurf care of, so don't leave this area, and don't let Dreamy leave the area either. Is that understood?" "Yes, Papa Smurf," all the Smurfs said together.
Papa Smurf soon joined Tracker and Sneaky as they looked down from the spot over to the outside of the volcano. They now saw that Gargamel was in plain sight, though he still couldn't see them. He looked like he was looking right into his crystal ball when he stopped in his approach. "Huh...what's this?" Gargamel said, sounding confused. "I wanted to go after the Smurfs. Why is the crystal ball leading me to these creatures instead?" "Apparently Gargamel must be confused by the fact that instead of Smurfs, the crystal ball is leading him to Swoofs," Papa Smurf said as he, Tracker, and Sneaky overheard his private monologue. "But that crystal ball is still smurfing him this way, Papa Smurf," Tracker said. "What are we going to smurf now?" Papa Smurf smiled as he pulled out a handful of magic powder. "I think that things that going to be a bit too stormy," he said, as he cast a spell over Gargamel that soon made a thundercloud appear. Gargamel saw a dark shadow over his head and heard the sound of thunder nearby. He looked up and saw that a small thundercloud appeared above him. It emitted a bolt of lightning that struck the seat of his pants, causing him to lose grip on the crystal ball. "Oh no! My crystal ball!" he cried out, watching as it bounced down the hill until it smashed itself to pieces upon a rock. Suddenly rain began to pour down, and Azrael yelped as he jumped on top of Gargamel's head, covering his eyes so that he couldn't see. "Azrael, get your filthy stinking paws off me this instant!" Gargamel shouted, feeling the stinging pain of each lightning bolt that struck the seat of his pants. "I can't see where I'm going!" But Azrael wouldn't let go, and Gargamel ended up blindly running away as the thundercloud continued to chase him away. Papa Smurf, Tracker, and Sneaky laughed as they watched Gargamel run away. "Good show, Papa Smurf," Tracker said. "That will teach the evil wizard not to come smurfing after us with a crystal ball." "Now to smurf with the other problem...how to get Dreamy to smurf back home," Sneaky said. "We'll figure out how to smurf it, my little Smurfs, trust me," Papa Smurf said, as he went back down to join the others.
Dreamy was inside the guest house, feeling a bit anxious about what was going on. It seemed like a good amount of time has passed, and he had no idea whether the village emergency was taken care of or not. He couldn't imagine what kind of creatures the Swoof would have to deal with on a daily basis, but if they were anything like the giants on his own planet, he wasn't sure that staying was the best idea. Soon he saw Swoofette entering the guest house. "Is everything okay, Astro Smurf?" she asked. "Uh, I guess so, Swoofette," Dreamy answered. "What was it that the Swoofs had to smurf with?" "Oh, it's nothing you need to worry about," Swoofette said. "Though if you can prove that you're just as strong and brave as the rest of us, you can help us swoof with the everyday dangers that we have to swoof with." "Me, strong and brave?" Dreamy said. "Hefty, Tuffy, and Duncan are the ones back home who are more that than I am." "But you're the first to swoof from your home to swoof us," Swoofette said. "I think that makes you strong and brave enough for me." "Gosh, you really think so?" Dreamy asked. "Tomorrow you will prove it, and I know that you're going to swoof that you're worthy of swoofing here with us," Swoofette said, sounding reassuring. "Prove that I'm worthy...? What are you smurfing about...?" Dreamy tried to ask. "Shhhh, don't think about what's going to swoof tomorrow," Swoofette said as she helped him get comfortable enough to go to sleep. "Just rest and Grandpa Swoof will explain everything in the morning." Dreamy felt himself getting tired. "Maybe you're right. This travel through outer smurf has really smurfed me out." He yawned as he settled himself on the pile of pillows and fur that made up his bed. Swoofette watched as Dreamy closed his eyes and fell asleep. "I will smurf you again in the morning," she whispered softly before she left the guest house.

Chapter 6
"So in order for Uncle Dreamy to smurf back home, you had to smurf up a bunch of challenges for him to smurf in the hopes that he would fail and decide that it's better for him to smurf back home," Psycheliana guessed. "Precisely, my dear Liana," Smurfette said. "Of course, it was mostly your Uncle Smurfs that smurfed the suggestions, but the whole idea was your Uncle Duncan's. He wanted to smurf if Dreamy was willing to smurf through all the challenges to the end, no matter how hard or even smurfdiculous the challenges were. But in the end, there was one thing that Dreamy couldn't smurf, and that smurfed the decision for him." Then Psycheliana saw Dreamy waking up from a night of sleeping in the guest house. "Aaaaah...boy, that was a refreshing smurf," he said as he stretched his arms and looked around at his surroundings, noticing that the sky was now blue. "This planet is so beautiful, I would sure love to explore it. But first I've got to see Grandpa Swoof about the challenges Swoofette was smurfing about." He saw Grandpa Swoof standing around and talking to a few Swoofs. "Hey, how's it swoofing, my fellow Swoofs?" he greeted. The Swoofs didn't return the greeting, but just gave Dreamy wide berth as he approached Grandpa Swoof. "So, Astro Smurf, have you decided that you want to become a Swoof?" Grandpa Swoof asked. "Absosmurfly, Grandpa Swoof, more than anything," Dreamy replied. "Very well, then," Grandpa Swoof said. "Swoof in mind, though, that to become a Swoof, you must swoof through tests of courage and skill. They will not be easy, so think before you're ready to swoof." "Courage and skill?" Dreamy said, briefly pondering the Swoof leader's words. "Well, okay, I'm game. Smurf me what you want me to smurf." Grandpa Swoof led Dreamy toward a bullseye that was set up near a rock wall. "It's really simple," the leader explained. "You will be blindswoofed, then you will swoof yourself around three times, and try to swoof this spear into that target." "Smurf a spear blindsmurfed into a target?" Dreamy said. "But that's impossible to smurf." "I know that you can swoof it, Astro Smurf," Swoofette said. "I believe in you." "Well...all right, Swoofette, I'll smurf this one for you," Dreamy said. Grandpa Swoof was handed a strip of cloth to wrap around Dreamy's head to cover his eyes. "Are you able to swoof anything?" he asked Dreamy. "Uh...nothing," Dreamy answered. The Swoofs watched as Dreamy spun himself around a few times until he was facing in a direction that wasn't straight toward the bullseye. "Well, this is going to be real swoofy," a Swoof that sounded like Jokey commented while snickering. "Here smurfs nothing," Dreamy said, as he threw the spear. The Swoofs watched as it ricocheted off the rock walls, then they ducked a few times as it continued to slice through the air in different directions until finally it struck the center of the bullseye. The Swoofs looked in shock at what happened while Dreamy took off his blindfold and saw where the spear went. "I...I did it...I DID IT!" he said, shouting with glee over his accomplishment. "That means that I'm a Swoof now, doesn't it, Grandpa Swoof?" "Uh...not yet, Astro Smurf," Grandpa Swoof answered. "That was just the first challenge. There are others for you to swoof. Wait right here while I swoof with the others what your next challenge will be." "Okay, Grandpa Swoof," Dreamy said, standing in the spot he was directed to stand in and watching as the elder Swoof went behind some rocks with a few Swoofs to discuss the next challenge. "Smurf, that didn't smurf just as I was hoping it to, my little Smurfs," he finally said when he and the Swoofs he was with were private. "So what are we going to smurf next, Papa Smurf?" a Swoof asked. "I know, let's have him smurf up a smurfed pole," another Swoof suggested. "That's a smurfy idea," Grandpa Swoof said. "Have the other Smurfs get it smurfed up immediately." As a few Swoofs went to get the next challenge ready, Grandpa Swoof returned to where Dreamy was waiting. "For your next challenge, Astro Smurf, you will have to swoof up a large pole. It won't be easy, but it's part of what we swoof as Swoofs." "Oh boy, that shouldn't be a problem," Dreamy said, sounding eager to give it a try. "I've been a pole-smurfer back on the world that I smurfed from. I even won a few contests with my fellow Smurfs." "Oooh, that swoofs really exciting," Swoofette said. "Yeah...I smurfed really bad for the losers, though," Dreamy said. "I wish you could smurf the look on their faces." After a few minutes, a Swoof cried out, "The pole is ready, Grandpa Swoof." Dreamy was then taken to where the pole had been set up, with Grandpa Swoof and the other Swoofs following him. "It's high, isn't it?" Grandpa Swoof asked. "I've smurfed higher in my time," Dreamy answered after taking a good look at the pole. "Well, then, swoof for it, and good swoof," Grandpa Swoof said. Dreamy immediately grabbed the pole and started climbing up to the top. The Swoofs standing around the pole laughed, as they could imagine Dreamy having trouble reaching the top, but after a short while as they watched, Dreamy made it to the top with no problem. "Smurfed it! Here I am!" he shouted down. Grandpa Swoof touched the pole and realized that something was wrong. "The pole...somebody forgot to smurf it with grease!" "I bet that it was you who forgot to smurf the pole," a Swoof that sounded like Brainy said. "Me? I thought Greedy was going to smurf that," a Swoof that sounded like Clumsy said. "Me? I thought Grouchy was going to smurf the pole," a Swoof that sounded like Greedy said. "Lazy was going to smurf that," a Swoof that sounded like Grouchy said. And so the blame was passed around to several more Swoofs. "You want me to smurf down now, Grandpa Swoof?" Dreamy asked. "NO!" Grandpa Swoof said sternly. "Wait until we swoof you." He then turned his attention toward the other Swoofs and spoke to them in a low voice. "This surely isn't smurfing well. What are we going to smurf next?" "I have an idea for a challenge, Papa Smurf, and this one smurftainly isn't going to fail," a Swoof said. "Quick, tell us," another Swoof said, eager to find out. After about a few minutes, Grandpa Swoof said, "Okay, Astro Smurf, you can swoof down now." After Dreamy slid down the pole, he said, "A funny thing has smurfed my mind, Grandpa Swoof. Back home on my world, to make smurfing up a pole a real challenge, they would smurf the pole with grease. That way, it wouldn't be so easy to smurf up to the top. You should see how many Smurfs failed that challenge." Grandpa Swoof just glared up at the sky, looking rather upset and saying nothing.
"For this next test, you must prove your smurf in battle by fighting a fellow Swoof," Grandpa Swoof said. "Fighting a Swoof?" Dreamy asked. "I never thought any of you would smurf your own kind, Grandpa Swoof." "It's part of how we live as Swoofs, Astro Smurf," Grandpa Swoof said. "I'll swoof from among my little Swoofs the one who will swoof as your opponent." As Papa Smurf looked among the Smurfs that were now turned into Swoofs, he realized that they now all looked the same -- even Duncan, who had shaved off his sideburns so that he could pass as one of the Swoofs. This made trying to find the one who looked like Hefty rather difficult, since normally he could be told apart just by the tattoos that he wore on his upper arms. He looked at the Swoof with a great big smile on his face. No, that one is Jokey Smurf, he thought to himself. And then he saw the Swoof sleeping while standing up and knew he was Lazy Smurf. He saw the Swoof eating something and knew he was Greedy Smurf. He saw the Swoof wearing glasses and knew he was Brainy Smurf. He saw the Swoof with an angry expression on his face and knew he was Grouchy Smurf. He saw the Swoof whistling an out-of-tune song and knew he was Harmony Smurf. And then he saw the Swoof with an expression on his face that looked like he was ready for a fight, and Papa Smurf knew he was looking at Hefty Smurf. "This Swoof will be your opponent," Grandpa Swoof said to Dreamy, pointing toward the Swoof he was looking at. "Fine," Dreamy said, eager to start. "ME?!?" the Swoof said in a voice that didn't sound like Hefty Smurf. "Psst," the Swoof that sounded like Tapper said, getting Grandpa Swoof's attention. He turned away from Dreamy Smurf to listen to what that Swoof needed to say. "I'd hate to be the smurfer of bad news, Papa Smurf," he whispered in Grandpa Swoof's ear, "but the Smurf you picked is Vanity Smurf." "What?!?" Grandpa Swoof said, sounding a little surprised. "Well? Are we ready?" Dreamy asked, sounding a little impatient. Grandpa Swoof quickly got the fight underway. "Quick, smurf me another suggestion, my little Smurfs," he said as discreetly as possible as he turned his attention from the contest at hand. The Swoof tried to put up a good fight, but Dreamy bested him after about a few minutes. "Oh, it's not easy being the most beautiful Swoof in the village," the Swoof groaned as he fell to the ground. The contest soon ended with Dreamy as the victor. "I hope this proves that I'm worthy of being a Swoof, Grandpa Swoof," Dreamy said as some Swoofs carried the injured one who was Vanity away. "Not quite yet, Astro Smurf," Grandpa Swoof said. "Follow me this way." He followed Grandpa Swoof until they were at the shore of a big lake. "Here you must swoof across to the other swoof of the lake and back...," Grandpa Swoof began to say. "Well, that smurfs easy enough," Dreamy interjected as he saw how big the lake looked. "...while swoofing that rock with you," Grandpa Swoof added, pointing toward a rock that was the size of a Smurf's head lying on the ground next to Dreamy. "That...that rock?!?" Dreamy said, not believing what he was hearing. "But that's impossible!" "Oh, but you must," Grandpa Swoof said, sounding insistent. "It is the way of the Swoof." "What's the matter, Astro Smurf?" a Swoof that sounded like Hefty said. "Afraid that you won't swoof the challenge?" "Uh, yeah, Astro Smurf swoofs like he's a real coward," a Swoof that sounded like Clumsy said. "I hate real cowards," a Swoof that sounded like Grouchy said. "Oh, too bad," Swoofette said, sounding like she was going to weep. "If you don't swoof the challenge, you'll never get to swoof around with a Swoof like me." Dreamy didn't like hearing the sound of any female, including Swoofette, crying. "Aw, don't be upset there, Swoofette," Dreamy said, trying to sound comforting. "I'll try to smurf it for you, even if it smurfs me to the bottom of the lake." "You would?" Swoofette said, sounding like her spirits were being lifted. "Oh, that would make me so swoofy!" Dreamy went over to the rock and picked it up, expecting it to be heavy. But to his surprise, it felt as light as one of Greedy's souffles. "Well, maybe it won't be so bad after all," he said as he carried the rock over into the water. "Uh, what does he smurf by that?" a Swoof that sounded like Dimwitty asked. "Beats the smurf out of me," a Swoof that sounded like Duncan McSmurf answered. "Hey, is this a joke?" a Swoof that sounded like Jokey said when he noticed what Dreamy was doing with the rock. The other Swoofs and even Grandpa Swoof were perplexed when they saw it for themselves. "I'll be right back," Dreamy said as he swam from the shore with the rock. "Well, I'll be...that rock is smurfing on the water!" a Swoof that sounded like Handy said. "Gosh, how is that even possible?" a Swoof that sounded like Clumsy asked. Grandpa Swoof picked up a rock and threw it into the water, then watched as it rose up to the surface and floated. "Of all the smurf luck...it's pumice stone!" he grumbled, cursing under his breath. "That's the only kind of rock around here that smurfs on water. We'll have to smurf up another challenge for Dreamy when he smurfs back."
"Well done," Grandpa Swoof said as Dreamy returned to the shore with the rock. "I hope you will be able to swoof the next challenge." "Really?" Dreamy said, sounding a bit exhausted. "How many more challenges will I have to smurf?" "As many as you will need for us to swoof that you are ready, Astro Smurf," Grandpa Swoof said. He then directed Dreamy's attention toward one of the nearby mountains. "Now swoof those mountains? There is edelweiss swoofing at the top. You must swoof to the top of that mountain and swoof one back before nightfall." Dreamy looked and saw how big the mountain was for him to climb. "But...the day is already smurfing late and..." "Swoof-xactly," Grandpa Swoof interrupted. "Now get swoofing! You're already swoofing time!" Dreamy started racing for the mountain and began his ascent. The sides of the mountain were steep and slippery, but Dreamy tried desperately to get as high as he could before the sun would set. However, he kept slipping down over and over until finally he became too exhausted to try again. "Oh, smurf is me...I'm never going to smurf it," he groaned. And then he thought he saw something flying in the sky. Was it a bird? It couldn't be...but could it? Could this planet also have birds that would help Swoofs get to distant and high places that they needed to go? He decided to call out and get the creature's attention.
Soon the Swoofs watched as the sky was turning dark and shadows were covering over their village. "It smurfs like the sun is setting, Papa Smurf," a Swoof that sounded like Brainy said. "And Dreamy still hasn't smurfed back yet with the edelweiss," a Swoof that sounded like Tapper said. "Smurfs like we're going to be smurfing back home soon, laddies," a Swoof that sounded like Duncan McSmurf said. Grandpa Swoof chuckled. "This time, my little Smurfs, we smurfed it for sure." Then suddenly they could hear, "Hey, Swoofs, here I smurf!" They turned and saw that Dreamy was now flying down toward the village upon the back of a stork. "And here is an edelweiss," he added, as he presented the flower to Grandpa Swoof after landing. The stork just looked confused at the Swoofs as they stared at her with disgusted looks. "So does this mean I get to be a Swoof now, Grandpa Swoof?" "Uh...almost," Grandpa Swoof responded. "There is one final challenge that you must swoof. But it's swoofing late, so you must rest. You will know what it is tomorrow."

Psycheliana laughed. "I guess Uncle Dreamy didn't make smurfing back home that easy for you, Mama." "He really didn't, Liana," Smurfette said. "That's why when he was sleeping, your Grandpa Smurf has smurfed us all together for one final discussion of what challenge he might present to Dreamy, and that was the challenge that made Dreamy decide that smurfing home was the better option." Then Psycheliana saw Dreamy wake up the next morning from his rest, to greet the Swoofs as they were gathered together with Grandpa Swoof. "So what's going to be my final challenge, Grandpa Swoof?" he asked. "Your final challenge, Astro Smurf, will be to swoof the hard and swoofed life of a Swoof, and that challenge will not be easy," Grandpa Swoof said gravely. "You must swoof food for all the Swoofs, swoof dishes when they're finished swoofing, and sweep and clean and scrub, and you must never swoof a word while you're swoofing it." "Oh my," Dreamy said, sounding a bit astonished. "But that's not all," the Swoof that sounded like Brainy added. "You will have to prostrate before every Swoof you meet, and you will have to swoof their feet." "What?!?" Dreamy said, sounding a bit shocked. "At night, you will have to swoof on a bed of sharp swoofs," the Swoof that sounded like Duncan McSmurf contributed, "and you must swoof up three times to swoof around the camp, all without singing or whistling, no matter how happy you swoof." "B-b-b-but..." Dreamy tried to say. "And the only food you'll get to eat is edelweiss," the Swoof that sounded like Greedy said. "And all you get to swoof is oil," the Swoof that sounded like Tapper said. "And that's only once a day," the Swoof that sounded like Nabby said. Dreamy cringed as he heard other things that this challenge entailed: "In you swoof time, you will swoof in the salt mines." "And you will be swoofing that for 543 days." "And you must never complain." "You will always have the swoof upon your face." "Of course, you won't be able to swoof part in the holidays." "Only then can you swoof that you are a true Swoof." "STOP!" Dreamy shouted, interrupting the Swoofs before they continued any further. He looked down toward the ground while he was trying to think of a response. "Well...uh, now that you've mentioned it, I do think that Papa Smurf is smurfing sick about me, wondering when I'm going to smurf home," he finally said with some uneasiness. "It was nice smurfing with you, but I do think it's time for me to smurf back to Earth." The Swoofs let out a sigh of relief when they heard that.
A short while later, the Swoofs have all gathered around Dreamy's smurfship, ready to see him off. Swoofette seemed like she was going to miss him the most of all. "I wish that I could swoof with you back to your own world, Astro Smurf," Swoofette said with some honest feeling. "I wish you could as well, Swoofette, but I don't think your Grandpa Swoof would allow that," Dreamy said. "But no matter where I smurf, I will always think of you." "And I will swoof of you as well," Swoofette said as she gave him a goodbye kiss. He then turned to Grandpa Swoof. "Thank you for letting me smurf with you. I'm sure that my fellow Smurfs will be interested in hearing all about you," he said as he shook hands with the Swoof leader. "May you swoof a safe journey to your home, Astro Smurf," Grandpa Swoof said. Dreamy turned toward his smurfship and started to climb back on board when a Swoof handed Grandpa Swoof a glass of liquid. "Oh, I forgot, Astro Smurf," Grandpa Swoof said, stopping Dreamy before he climbed any further. "Here's a little something for you that will swoof you strength for your journey." Dreamy climbed back down, removed his helmet, and drank the contents of the glass. "Mmmm...it's smurflicious," he said to himself. "It smurfs just like smurfberry juice." He then climbed back on board the smurfship and got back behind the controls to start the propellers. The Swoofs rocked the ship and sent up smoke to make it look like the smurfship was ascending back into outer space as the propellers continued to spin. Eventually, Dreamy began to feel himself getting tired, and the propellers slowed down until they came to a stop, which meant that Dreamy was asleep again. The Swoofs let out another sigh of relief. "I'm glad that that part is now over with," a Swoof that sounded like Hefty said. "Now it is time for the antidote," Grandpa Swoof said. And so with the uncorking of another bottle, a translucent green mist covered over all the Swoofs until they were changed back to their original appearances as Smurfs. "Oh, there's just nothing in the world like being a Smurf...nothing at all," Smurfette said, as she looked at herself after the transformation. "You've said it, Smurfette," Vanity said, as he looked himself in the reflection of his mirror. "I hate being anything other than a Smurf," Grouchy said. "Hopefully this will be the last time we will have to smurf around like that, laddie," Duncan said. "I have to admit, my good Duncan, it was rather fun while it lasted," Tapper said. "Okay, my little Smurfs, it's time for us to get the smurfship smurfed apart so that we can smurf it back home where it belongs," Papa Smurf said. "Yeah, well, I'd like to smurf him apart for having us have to smurf this whole thing," Tuffy muttered to himself.
"And so for the next two days, Liana, we smurfed through the routine of smurfing Dreamy's smurfship apart, smurfing it and him back to the Smurf Village, and smurfing it all together again without ever letting Dreamy know the truth about the whole thing," Smurfette said. "It wasn't easy, but in the end I thought that everything we smurfed for him was worth it." And then Pscyheliana saw that the Smurfs have returned to the village and reassembled the smurfship, putting Dreamy back inside the capsule while keeping him asleep. "Everything is all set, Papa Smurf," Tapper said when the village leader joined the others at the site of the smurfship. "Good," Papa Smurf said. "Now all we have to smurf is to wait patiently until he smurfs up." The Smurfs stood around outside the smurfship, looking rather anxious. "Well? Is he going to smurf out here or what?" Grouchy said. "Give the laddie some time, Grouchy," Duncan McSmurf said. "How long is this going to smurf? I've had it up to here Dreamy's birthday wish smurfing true," Tuffy said, sounding upset. "Wait...here he smurfs now!" Tracker said as he noticed movement in the capsule. The door of the smurfship opened, and Dreamy soon stepped out to find his fellow Smurfs greeting him home. "LONG LIVE THE ASTRO SMURF! HURRAY!" they shouted together. Dreamy climbed down from the smurfship and went over to embrace Papa Smurf. "It's so smurfy to smurf your face again after a long journey into outer smurf, Papa Smurf," Dreamy said wholeheartedly. "Same here, Dreamy," Papa Smurf said, sounding pleased. "So how was your journey?" "Incredible! Fantastic!" Dreamy replied enthusiastically. "You wouldn't believe where I smurfed to! There was this planet that I smurfed my smurfship on with people called the Swoofs!" "Swoofs?" Papa Smurf said, sounding curious to know about them. "They're a somewhat backwards people, Papa Smurf, but they were very nice," Dreamy said as he and all the Smurfs walked away from the smurfship. "They smurfed like I was the smurf of honor. Wherever I smurfed, they would always smurf down and prostrate before me. They also smurfed a great feast in my honor. I was smurfing right next to their leader, Grandpa Swoof...a smurfy guy, even if he is a bit showy, but still nice." Papa Smurf glared sideways when he heard a Smurf snicker behind him as they were walking together. "The next day, I was smurfing what Smurfs could do: smurfing a spear into a target, smurfing a fight with a big and strong Swoof," Dreamy continued. "I smurf that he must have been two smurfs tall." "Me?" Vanity said. "But I'm hardly any bigger than..." "Shhh," the Smurf behind him said. "The Swoofs were smurfing for me to stay, but I knew that I couldn't, so I smurfed back home," Dreamy said as he finished his tale about his adventure. "So...now that you're home, Dreamy Smurf, do you plan on smurfing other journeys into outer smurf?" Papa Smurf asked. "Well, the idea of smurfing other worlds and smurfing strange new civilizations does smurf rather tempting, Papa Smurf, but...," Dreamy began to say. "But what?!?" the other Smurfs prompted. "...but when it smurfs down to it, there's no other place I'd want to smurf than here on this world," Dreamy finished. "So I'll be smurfing apart my smurfship." "That's a very wise decision, Dreamy," Papa Smurf said before turning to the others. "And so, my little Smurfs, in honor of Dreamy's first journey into outer smurf and his safe return to our village, I would like to smurf a little welcome home party together." All the Smurfs cheered at the thought of a party for Dreamy Smurf. Smurfette came up to Dreamy and kissed him. "Welcome home, Dreamy," she greeted pleasantly. "I knew that your birthday wish would someday smurf true." "That makes the two of us, Smurfette," Dreamy said, sounding delighted. "You know, there was someone on that other world who reminded me of you. She was really beautiful, but she's nothing compared to you." "Oh...for a moment there, I thought that you were smurfing to make me jealous," Smurfette said with a slight tease in her voice. "So how was it knowing that your smurfday wish had finally come true, my good Dreamy?" Tapper asked. "Oh, it's the most smurftastic thing that's ever happened to me, Tapper," Dreamy said, smiling. "I really smurfed like I was Duncan McSmurf with that Swoof that I smurfed with on that planet." "Well, I know you have the smurfs in you to smurf that Swoof in his place there, laddie," Duncan said as he approached Dreamy. "Duncan, what's happened to your face? You smurf a little different without the sidesmurfs," Dreamy said. "Oh, yes...well, don't get used to smurfing me that way, boy," Duncan said. "I'd be smurfing the whiskers back even if you thought of never smurfing back home to us." "I would venture to say that every Smurf has missed you when you were gone, Dreamy, and I for one am glad for your safe return," Tapper said, smiling along with Duncan. "So am I, Tapper...though I do wonder what has happened since I was away," Dreamy said. "Oh, just nothing you really need to consmurf yourself about," Tapper said. Just then, Orbit was passing by, singing, "Earth below us, drifting, falling, smurfing weightless, calling, calling home..." Dreamy, Tapper, and Smurfette looked at Orbit for that moment, and then at each other, with Dreamy wondering what was really going on when he was away. "I guess he must have been inspired by your travel through outer smurf, my friend," Tapper said with a shrug.
"Great Ancestors, Mama, that was a great story about Uncle Dreamy," Psycheliana said after Smurfette's story was finished. "It's too bad that Papa wasn't a part of it, like all your stories of what happened before he smurfed you." "I know how you feel, Liana," Smurfette said. "Sometimes I wish that I could have smurfed your Papa when I was first created, but then I have a feeling I would have made all the other Smurfs angry and jealous like I would have if I ever smurfed the inclination of falling in love with your Grandpa." "Uggh, that's just too creepy for me," Psycheliana said while making a face at the thought of her Mama and Grandpa Smurf being married. "I wonder what made Uncle Dreamy decide to smurf that kind of fantasy again, Aunt Smurfette," Miracle said out of curiosity. "Dreamy started smurfing letters to the Swoofs, and Courier Smurf didn't know what to smurf with all the letters he was smurfing that he couldn't smurf to wherever they smurfed because they didn't exist, Miracle," Smurfette said. "He was disappointed that he wasn't smurfing a response from them, so your Grandpa Smurf decided to smurf a letter in secret to Dreamy that came from the Swoofs, smurfing them how much they missed him and how they wanted him to return someday. That made Dreamy so excited that he resmurfed his spaceship from scratch, and then your Grandpa Smurf decided to smurf what was called a 'reality bubble' that would smurf the whole village into the Swoof Village. Unfortunately, Brainy didn't smurf the whole 'reality bubble' spell completely, which made Dreamy upset when the Swoof Village changed back too soon and he realized for himself that the Swoofs weren't real." "I feel really sorry for Uncle Dreamy, Mama, but at least he got to smurf up into space for real when that spaceship landed in the Smurf Forest years ago, and Papa and Uncle Handy were with him on that trip," Psycheliana said. "Do you think we'll ever smurf into space for real in this lifetime, Aunt Smurfette?" Miracle asked. "Who really knows?" Smurfette answered honestly. "For now, let's smurf home for dinner so we can get rested and smurf ourselves ready for another day." "Yes, Mama," both Psycheliana and Miracle said together. "This smurf wants to speak alone with Narrator, Smurfette," Empath requested. She nodded and proceeded onward toward their house with the two children. "I know that listening to Smurfette smurfing about her life before she met you isn't easy, Empath, and I don't blame you for how you feel," Narrator said when they were alone together. "This smurf does wonder at times if you were ever a witness of a story where Smurfette loved somebody more than anybody else right from the start," Empath said. "As a matter of fact, I have been a witness to one particular story," Narrator said. "However, she would later find herself competing for his full affections when another Smurfette came into his life, and he would end up marrying her first instead of Smurfette." "Great Ancestors," Empath said. "This smurf can only wonder how he was able to deal with two Smurfettes that were in competition with each other." "It wasn't easy, let me smurf you," Narrator said. "But in the end, all three of them smurfed their peace and their happiness with each other. The other Smurfs in that story also became satisfied with the female Smurfs that smurfed into being through a magic mirror that they have found." "Hmmm, a magic mirror that creates female Smurfs," Empath said, pondering that thought. "Empath, supper's ready," he heard Smurfette call out. "This smurf acknowledges," Empath said, realizing that now was the time to end his conversation with Narrator. "Well, until we meet again, this smurf might as well let you smurf back to your stories." "No problem, Empath, I will know when to find you," Narrator said as he watched Empath depart.
