I agree Cool Smurf. I wish it could be like the original cartoon series, though I guess I can deal with the new lifelike version. ![[Roll Eyes]](rolleyes.gif)

Part of The Smurfs' Christmas Carol is animated like the cartoon. I was very happy. Thanks, Chloette:).

Pay $10 to watch a movie that's just like the Saturday morning cartoon show? Not on my dime.

Look at the Simpsons' movie. That was traditionally animated, made a lot of money, and it was a hit. Why not the Smurfs?

I loved that Christmas Carol mini movie. It would be really cool if they could show what Gutsy Smurf would look like animated like the smurfs TV show.

Maybe a 2D animated spin-off will be great for either Nickelodeon or Cartoon Network!

From Cool Smurf: "Look at the Simpsons' movie. That was traditionally animated, made a lot of money, and it was a hit. Why not the Smurfs?"
Probably because the creators of the Simpsons series intended for the movie to be like that. The Simpsons TV series has been in active creation for about 22 years. The Smurfs TV series, on the other hand, stopped being in production since 1990, and Hanna-Barbera no longer exists, and the only people Studio Peyo has any contact with now is Sony Pictures Animation. Nothing says that the Smurfs have to be stuck in a 2D animation ghetto.

I like the 3-D Smurfs. I think they're enormously cute and that their expressions and mannerisms retain their smurfy personalities from the cartoon and comics. However, I also love the 2-D Smurf cartoons, even with their occasional flaws and goofs, and I don't believe that 2-D animation is necessarily a 'ghetto.' Quite the contrary, when it's done right, I deeply respect 2-D (and especially hand-drawn 2-D) animation. From the earliest days of Winsor McCay and his individually painted frames of film, 2-D animation has often reached the heights of true artwork. Studio Ghibli is a recent example, with its awe-inspiring masterpieces like "The Grave of the Fireflies" and "Princess Mononoke." Rankin/Bass's "The Last Unicorn", "Flight of Dragons," and "The Hobbit" are other beautiful examples--not to mention early Disney, when Bill Peet was working there, or the playful fluidity of the Looney Tunes. I doubt they'd make the Smurfs sequel in 2-D, but if they do, I don't think that has to mean it's somehow 'lesser' than a 3-D movie. I'm just hoping it'll have a tight, honest storyline, that any original characters will be interesting and skillfully developed, and that they'll stay true to the Smurfs' personalities. Just my opinion. Sorry, I didn't mean for this to get so long... LOL ![[Happy Smurf]](graemlins/Happy_Smurf.gif)

Like It or not the 2D animated version was going be the one that always a successful. I saw many 3D CG version of the old series it lasts only a couple of years while 2D animated lasts forever. The problem about 3D CG is that technology always the big part behind it so they have to keep change it all the time. And it never looked half as natural as 2D not how realistic it is but does it feel easy on the audiences eyes not very "organic look" for 3D it still not blend together with the background. Realistic smurfs were here and I can tell it will not last as long as its original art form in 2D animated. But this only applies to the cartoon series that has their original form in 2D hand-drawn animated series. The question is does Sony Pictures Animation have got what it takes to please their fans? Tapping into something that requires the old school tech and much lower budget put into the project but without Imageworks software do they really need that much money? I have to tell you all many companies these days trying to avoid the inevitable,Sooner or later they finally come back to old fashioned style.

Paris? When they're filming in Montreal? How about another French-speaking country... Belgium?
I've always loved 2D so much more than 3D and live action. 2D can make the impossible... possible! It's also more immediate. You can "read" a character's expression quicker.
Though the Hanna-Barbera show was limited animation. Let's not forget. It frustrates me a little, when folks say A Christmas Carol "was animated like the Saturday morning cartoon". It isn't... It's so much lovelier! It's fluid and bouncy and funny and expressive... There's plenty of squash-and-stretch, and playfulness... They had lots of money to blow for a fantastic-looking special! I congratulate Duck Studios on their commitment and ingenuity.
The NBC show did look nice sometimes, in later seasons. Like in "A Maze of Mirrors", in season 8. That's the nicest looking episode that isn't a special. It's also Vanity Paradise. And there is no sight of those &$?! smurflings! Oh, I apologise, this is a tangent.

A 2D animated Smurfs movie SHOULD NOT belong in the same series as a 3D CGI movie. Too jarring.

That would be cool if they filmed in Belguim. 3D is OK, but I'm most used to 2D.

"Production Begins On "The Smurfs 2"
CULVER CITY, Calif., April 26, 2012 -- Production has begun on Columbia Pictures' and Sony Pictures Animation's live-action/computer animated hybrid 3D family comedy The Smurfs® 2, the sequel to the 2011 worldwide hit that took in over $560 million at the worldwide box office. Returning from the first film for an all-new adventure that takes the Smurfs to Europe are Director Raja Gosnell, Producer Jordan Kerner, Executive Producer Ezra Swerdlow, and stars Neil Patrick Harris as Patrick Winslow, Jayma Mays as Grace Winslow, Sofia Vergara as Odile, and Hank Azaria as Gargamel. Brendan Gleeson joins the cast as Patrick Winslow's stepfather, Victor Doyle. Behind the microphone, as the voices of the Smurfs, all of the principal voice cast members will reprise their roles, including Katy Perry as Smurfette, Jonathan Winters as Papa Smurf, Alan Cumming as Gutsy, Fred Armisen as Brainy, George Lopez as Grouchy and Anton Yelchin as Clumsy; in addition, John Oliver, who took a cameo voice role as Vanity Smurf in the first film, returns to voice his now primary role. Additionally behind the microphone, Christina Ricci and JB Smoove will voice the new Smurf-like naughty characters, Vexy and Hackus, respectively. The screenplay is by J. David Stem & David N. Weiss and Karey Kirkpatrick and Jay Scherick & David Ronn, based on the characters and works of Peyo. The Smurfs 2 is scheduled to be released in U.S. theaters on July 31, 2013.
In this sequel to the hybrid live action/animated family blockbuster comedy The Smurfs, the evil wizard Gargamel creates a couple of mischievous Smurf-like creatures called the Naughties that he hopes will let him harness the all-powerful, magical Smurf-essence. But when he discovers that only a real Smurf can give him what he wants — and only a secret spell that Smurfette knows can turn the Naughties into real Smurfs — Gargamel kidnaps Smurfette and brings her to Paris, where he has been winning the adoration of millions as the world's greatest sorcerer. Will Smurfette, who has always felt different from the other Smurfs, find a new connection with the Naughties Vexy and Hackus – or will the Smurfs convince her that their love for her is True Blue?
Commenting on the announcement, Kerner said, "We've brought the entire live-action and voice cast into the sequel. It's a real thrill to 'get the Smurf village back together' for another adventure. The same holds true for the crew. We are so deep in talent we know a fine film will result. It's like visiting with old friends – just some slightly smaller than others."
Many crew members from the original film are reuniting, including Director of Photography Phil Méheux, Production Designer Bill Boes, Editor Sabrina Plisco, Costume Designer Rita Ryack and Visual Effects Supervisor Richard R. Hoover. The visual effects and animation are by Sony Pictures Imageworks Inc.
I just found this on prnewswire.
Quite detailed which is a good thing for us!
