Azrael the Cat
Azrael is the loyal pet cat of the villainous Gargamel. Together, they try to capture The Smurfs... without much success! Azrael has a knack for knowing when Gargamel's plans are not going to work out - but sticks by him all the same.
In The Smurfs Movies, four orange tabby cats play the role of Azreal - whose names are Blaze, Cheeto, Mr. Krinkle and Sunny. Some scenes in the films are also done with CGI.

The Cat's Meow
To play Gargamel, the evil sorcerer determined to destroy the lovable Smurfs, Hank Azaria had to act alongside a cat...
"If I wasn't a cat person before this film, I became one during the course of shooting," Azaria says of his feline costar playing Azrael. "One thing I can tell you about the cat? Cat's a good kisser."
While misanthropic Gargamel might hate the Smurfs, and occasionally shows signs of hating his only friend, in the end, he has love for Azrael. And in the second live-action film, the two show it. Hank Azaria said...
"In order to get them to lick your face, you have to put cat food on your face. Sound good? Anyone out there want to act with a cat? I've got a lot of leftover cat food you can apply to yourself."
Purr-fect Performance
The cast and crew joked about working with live animals and whether or not cats were harmed during filming. Hank Azaria speaks of working with a "real" cat..
"Sometimes it's a combination of CGI and cat ... mostly I was with the cat. They're incredibly pliable animals," Azaria laughed. "They have nine lives! The funny thing was, I really would throw him a lot. Like, there's a scene where I acquire a robe, and I get it by just basically haggling with a guy, and going, 'Ah, screw it,' and throwing the cat in his face."
