Hi Penni, generally faked smurfs are not quite as good quality wise. They tend to have rougher seams, blurred writing, the material is often different - much softer and sometimes harder more plastic type material. Slightly different mold shapes can be found and sometimes colours are slightly different.There are some very good fakes around, especially of some of the more expensive figures, unfortunately as soon as someting becomes valuable there will always be someone trying to make a fast buck.
Also consider that smurfs are sometimes painted with ***rare*** variation colours to increase their value.
Do remember though that fake figures are also collected by some smurf collectors.
Just be very careful if you are ever offered a very rare expensive smurf for a lot less money than it should be worth.
