Seeing that Disney has produced a live-action movie based on DIC's cartoon classic Inspector Gadget from the 1980s, I was thinking if anyone out there would have an interest in seeing a Smurfs movie produced, and if so:

1. Which company would you want to see develop it with IMPS Licensing's blessing? Disney, Hanna-Barberra/Warner Bros., DreamWorks, independent, etc.?

2. What style would best suit it? All traditional animation, mostly computer animated, or a mix of computer animation and live action? (The human characters can be real actors and actresses, while the Smurfs can be computer animated.)

3. What kind of story could best suit a new kind of Smurfs movie?

4. Who would you want to do the voices of, or in the case of live-action, actually play the part of, certain characters?

Since nobody's answering to this post yet, I might as well offer my suggestions, just to get the discussion started. Remember: these are JUST my suggestions -- you can debate about them all you want or offer your own!

1. As far as a company team-up with IMPS, I think it could either be Disney (with Pixar on hand, for the next answer) or Warner Bros. through Hanna-Barberra. DreamWorks did Antz, but other than that, the company is too new with a somewhat unproven track record.

2. My personal preference is having the movie done as a mix of computer animation and live actors. I don't know what anyone else thinks, but I think it's time we saw what a Smurf Village would actually look like if one actually existed in its time frame -- I could care less about seeing it like it's some Disneyfied amusement park attraction.

3. I don't know what kind of original story could befit a new Smurfs movie, but if nothing else comes up and the computer animation/live action combo is used, I wouldn't mind to see an updated version of The Magic Flute with some added or changed story elements.

4. For voice actors, here are just a few suggestions for some characters:

Papa Smurf -- Ethan Phillips (Neelix from "Star Trek: Voyager")
Smurfette -- Renee O'Connor (Gabrielle from "Xena")
Brainy -- Ted Raimi (Joxer from "Hercules" and "Xena")
Hefty -- Thomas Wilson (Biff Tannen from "Back To The Future") or Aron Eischenberg(?) (Nog from "Star Trek: Deep Space 9")

As far as live actors, I could only picture Christopher Lloyd or Rene Auberjonois from "Deep Space 9" in the role of Gargamel.

Ok I have an idea....

I would like to see Mike Meyer's fey German film artiste character "Ditcher" enter and interact in the Smurf village. Everyone should be a cartoon except Dichter.

Every once in a while when the plot became silly or boring, Dichter would say "This conversation is becoming tiresome", and begin to do something new.

Not to sound disrespectful of your ideas, Papa S., but I'd rather not see the Smurfs being used in some ridiculous movie parody that goes against the original concept of the cartoon characters.

Hi Vic!

Papa was just being a "Jokey Smurf" with his Ditcher and Gary Coleman ideas.

I personally love the idea of Biff playing Hefty in a Smurfs movie! Who would you recommend for Clumsy, seeing as he is one of my favorite smurfs? I can't think of anyone that would do him justice.

Who would I recommend for Clumsy? Hmmmm...

Jim Varney, maybe? The guy who plays Ernie in "Ernie Goes To Camp" and all those other movies featuring him; he also played Jedediah Clampett in the "Beverly Hillbillies" movie.

Another possibility may be Max Grodenchik, who plays Quark's "dumb" brother Rom on Star Trek: Deep Space 9.

A smurf movie would be so cool! I agree with what everyone else has said about it, but Biff be the voice of Hefty? No Way! Hefty is strong AND smart and Biff's voice has that "I am strong and very stupid" tang to it...

Why not have the people who did thier voices in the cartoon do it for the movie? That way they will be the same smurfs I love...

Just one problem with that idea, Erica -- Don Messick, the voice of Papa Smurf, has died in 1997. And speaking of deaths, Jim Varney, whom I suggested for the voice of Clumsy, has died this year. What a shame! God bless them.
