I loved the Smurfs while I was growing up and am really fond of a particular episode that nobody seems to remember.

I was wondering if you had any details about an episode where I believe the Smurfs ate some berries or something and they all walked around saying "gnat, gnat"  ???

I'm sorry I know the description is pretty vagued but any information would be helpful.

Thanks!!!

Jenny

I remember that episode you made reference to. It was called "The Purple Smurfs". It starts when Lazy Smurf, trying to search for more logs, is bitten by a purple fly -- and all he says is "Gnap! Gnap!" Soon after, other smurfs are bitten, and thus turn purple too, eventually ending with Papa Smurf, the lone survivor, eventually turning purple himself. Eventually, his lab explodes, and the antidote cures all of the smurfs. BTW, this episode was based on the "Angry Smurf" PVC figure, who was jet black; but to make the characters easier to see on the show, the characters became purple instead. I hope this helps.

Hi Jenny!

Here is what Vic George's Imaginarium has to say:

1981-1982 Season

The Purple Smurfs, Episode 23

A purple fly bites Lazy, causing a tail-biting purple epidemic!

Vic George has a list (with descriptions) of all the Smurf Adventures episodes at his site.

Quasisp has is dead-on in his description! Thanks Quasisp! In my opinion, this is one of the most scary episodes of the Smurfs ever made.

There is a comicbook version of this story available, featuring the original "black" Smurfs, that goes into even more detail.

Hi again Jenny!

In another Smurf Bulletin Board System message, posted on 07-27-1999 05:05 PM, Vic George revealed:

---------------

One of my best Smurf collecting memories was getting a Smurf graphic novel in German called "Schwarzenschlumpfe und Blauschlumpfe" ("Black Smurfs and Blue Smurfs", the original version of "The Purple Smurfs" cartoon episode) as well as a Papa Smurf figurine from my sister when she came home from visiting Germany in 1984. Of course, that was second only to getting the Atari 2600 Smurf videogame as my 15th birthday present sometime earlier, and then later buying it for the ColecoVision.

---------------

So one can gather the original title is "Black Smurfs and Blue Smurfs".

...Vic George's Imaginarium also has a pretty spiffy 3D model of a scary Purple Smurf!
