I personally believe that it is. I just watched the film, and see nothing to point out that it doesn't take place in the same universe as the 80s animated show.

If I'm wrong, let me know.

I agree. All I can imagine is because the cartoon series ended without the Smurfs getting home. I'd love to see an "official" story/movie/cartoon special address this issue. BRING OUR SMURFS HOME, POWERS THAT BE!!!! [Uncle Sam] [Frown] [Embarrassed] [Big Grin]

First of all, BountyHunter, Greedy in the cartoon series is the village chef, whereas Greedy in the 2011 movie isn't, but rather there are two village chefs, Baker and Chef. Greedy is seen flying with Farmer on storks as they race to the village, the one who says "the blue ones [smurfberries] are mine". The Greedy that appears in the movie is based on the original comic book version, so no, I don't consider it to be canon with the cartoon show.

Greedy Smurf
This page on Smurfs Wiki explains the differences between the two Greedys.

I agree with Vic. The movie was totally more in canon with the comics with the character arrangement. I think the comic version makes more sense than the cartoon series version.

Technically, the cartoon isn't cannon, if you consider Peyo's work cannon. lol I was about to point that out about Greedy/Chef/Baker actually making the movie more cannon than the cartoon. [Wink]

The way I see it, since Americans mostly got the cartoon series to judge anything by with only very few of the comic books that got published here, I believe that the comic books and the cartoon show are both valid universes of canon to judge any additional Smurf-related work by, including those officially sanctioned by the Culliford family. As outlined in the article "Non-canonical Smurf presentations" on the Smurfs Wiki:

"At present, there are two main universes of canon when it comes to telling Smurf stories: the comic book universe, which consists of stories written by Peyo and his family studio (Studio Peyo), and the cartoon show universe, which consists of stories written by Peyo, his collaborator Yvan Delporte, and by writers for Hanna-Barbera Productions. If a story not written by any of the parties listed does not follow the events that take place within the continuity of stories within either universe, it is then to be considered "non-canonical" and thus should be listed as such. Parody works, particularly those of a nature not suitable to general audiences, and fan works automatically fall into the "non-canonical" presentation status."

Also of note is Smurfette's origin as she briefly explains it in the movie: she says that Papa Smurf used a special spell to change her to a real Smurf, which is more in line with the cartoon show's origin story of Smurfette than the comic books' origin of having the transformation be of "plastic smurfery"...unless, of course, the Culliford family decided that the cartoon show origin made a whole lot more sense than the comic book version and so adopted it into comic book canon.

Nonetheless, I will stand by my decision to list the Smurfs movie as non-canonical, as its story basically exists in a universe that is independent of either canons.

Exactly that: the producers didn't made any mix-up between any Smurfs (eg Greedy + Chef in HB cartoons), although they have put new ones specially created for the movie.

Vic, I am unsure whether the "plastic smurfery" should be taken literally as Papa Smurf is foremost a wizard, not a plastic surgeon. It is more likely that the Smurfette (this is what she is always referred to in the comics as she technically does not have a proper Smurf name) was a experimental subject by Papa Smurf who performed magic spells on her to change her appearance. Unfortunately, we never know of the details on what happens between Papa Smurf and the Smurfette inside the laboratory.

It should be mentioned that in the PaperCutz version, the translator did not use "plastic smurfery" but a technical term that I do not remember but was close to the original French "operation de chirurgie esthetischtroumpf."

And I agree with you that the 2011 film is not considered canon for the reasons mentioned.

I agree with Vic also. It's more in line with the actual comics.

Although I do like Greedy's persona in the cartoon show more.
