I wanted to know a bit more about recolors. How can you tell if a recolored smurf isn't just painted by someone else? I've seen smurfs onwhere they even say they recolored it themselves. Are the recolores mentioned on this site the only official recolors? I'm the most careful when a smurf has a white recolor cause that could just paint that's scraped off. Also, I've seen lighter colored versions. Aren't those just faded because of sunlight?

Well, that's really a good question, Snooty. I have no much confidence regarding for I've already heard both of fake Smurfs for sale there and 'repainted' ones, and even 'custom Smurfs'. I found this subject very interesting! I think these custom Smurfs are interesting because of the creativity used for them, but I also think the author has to make it clear to potential buyers these figurines are not original. ![[Swoof]](graemlins/Swoof.gif)

Ebay apart, there are really original Smurf figurines whose colors have different tones. I myself received today three ones I bought: a Valentine Smurf (#20128), a Valentine Smurfette (#20156) and a Tricycle Super Smurf (#40203). Except for Smurfette, their skin blue tone is much darker than some of the ones I have, for it depends very much upon the country where they were finished. See this example:

My Cupid Smurf is just alike the second one there, up on the right.
I hope this helps! ![[Wink]](wink.gif)

Snooty, there are many Smurfs now that are repainted by people. The ones onwhere they say they recolored it themselves are usually called Custom Smurfs, like Squeaky mentioned. The sellers are upfront about the fact that they are repaints. Sometimes these custom repaints can be very fun, like painting a Smurf in a Spider-Man costume.

Another type of repaint is deceptive. This type of repaint is done to fool people into believing the Smurf is rarer than it really is. Sellers take paint and recolor a common Smurf figure to make it more valuable. This is done by bad people.
The colors on this site are the official colors. Bluebuddies lists the real color differences and variations for the figures. For example, 2.0014 Sunbather has four official color variations as you can see below.

Here is an example of what Peazjelly was talking about. This is the common version of Captain Papa Smurf...
 Captain Papa Smurf (standard version)
This is the more rare version with the blue jacket...
Captain Papa Smurf (rare blue jacket version)
This is the standard Papa Smurf painted to look like the rare version. It's a fake. They didn't do a very good job of painting it!
 Fake Captain Papa
I don't mind when people make custom smurfs (in fact I think they are fun) BUT they should always state that they repainted the smurf!

Thanks for all the info. That writes there's a different version for every regular smurf! Though I believe recolors are mostly found in the somewhat older range; Like from before they started making yearly sets.
A small question: Anyone know if this smurf with red flower is real? I actually own a bad quality version and can obtain a mint one but this particular version is not on this site:

I agree, most recolors are on the older smurfs. The newer smurfs have much less variations (ie. 2.0421 and upwards)
I have seen the Flower Smurf (AKA Courting Smurf 20076) in 3 different colors: white, red, and yellow. The white flower is the official color.
 Courting Smurf (white flower)
Courting Smurf (red / yellow / white flowers)
All of the red flowers I have come across have been poor quality - the paint comes off easily. Official Smurfs don't typically have paint that comes off that easily. Sure, they get paint rubs... but the paint just doesn't peel away. You know what I mean?

You're welcome, Snooty! Nice pics, Sassette! And I agree with Raven -Captain Papa Smurf in navy blue jacket is really the smartest! Pity it's the rarest too... And I must confess, it's the first time I've ever seen Courting Smurfs with a red flower or an yellow one - even not being the 'official' they're also very cute! ![[Enamored Smurf]](graemlins/Enamored_Smurf.gif)

Is there a smurf paint that exists to touch up rubs? I have an old collection from the 70's-80's and we wanted to fix some of the rubs for ourselves, not to sell for money. Or is this not a good idea? Leave them the way they are?

I guess it's a personal choice... whether to touch up rubs or not. For me personally, I would leave them alone and not try to repaint them. My reasoning is that I haven't come across a paint that works well enough - it seems like you can always tell when smurfs have been retouched. Look at the "Fake Captain Papa" with the blue jacket in the picture above, for example.
It would be so nice to restore smurfs to their former glory... you could always try on a smurf and see if you like the results?
But for me... I say enjoy your smurfs they way they are, paint rubs and all! ![[Big Grin]](biggrin.gif)

Yes, I did try. We got a few smurfs in a lot that were not up to par. I got a bunch of paints, tried mixing and like you said, none matched completely. Resoring smurfs to former glory, lol, if there's a way I will find it and maybe make that my new career!
