What's X Factor? Is it like Fear Factor?

X-Factor is somewhat similar to American Idol (née Pop Idol in the UK) and is broadcast on ITV in England.
X-Factor has three judges: Simon Cowell, Sharon Osbourne and Louis Walsh. In my opinion, the show has better music than American Idol. X-Factor features older, tried and true classic pop songs - and yes I know the word "pop" is an anathema in North America. X-Factor's background music/bumpers often feature electronic music from actual artists that I own, not the blaring generic electric guitar "rock" we see so often on US TV. Another interesting US/UK difference: You have to pay to vote (no free 1-800 phone numbers or internet voting) - it costs 25p to text message (which is popular in Europe unlike in the US), 30p to phone vote, and you can also vote with the red button on your remote control (cool).
The last episode of X-Factor I watched was great, Simon pontificated that one singer may be a star - or was perhaps suitable for the hotel circuit. Nasty but quite what you'd expect. Sharon is great as well, and everyone involved appears quite competent and there is good comradery (quite different from the almost illiterate and orally challenged/marble-mouthed Jay Mohr on NBC's Last Comic Standing). All and all, an entertaining show.

Um... I've never heard Papa sing before, but I heard Handy sing in the 'sode "Romeo and Smurfette" when he was serenading Smurfette at her window with a lute or a mandolin or something. He sounded like a wandering minstral, though.
