Today is a sad day because the Chairman & CEO of Applause LLC, Robert Solomon, has died.
Solomon was personally responsible for securing many of Wallace Berrie & Co.'s most lucrative licensing rights, including the Smurfs, Cabbage Patch Kids, Sesame Street and E.T.
Many of us remember Wallace Berrie & Co. as the company that brought the Smurfs to the North American marketplace in the 1970s. (In 1982, Wallace Berrie & Co. bought Applause Inc., and also adopted the Applause Inc. company name.) I have many fond memories of seeing the "Wallace Berrie & Co." name so this is quite sad, especially considering Robert Solomon is the man people hoped would turn around the struggling company, which this year is celebrating its 25th anniversary at the same time as facing eviction from its corporate headquarters.
