What is a Muster Smurf?
Musters are Smurf figures that contains a special mark, known as the "muster mark". This rare mark makes Muster Smurfs one of the most highly sought after types of Smurf figurines. Shaped like a stylized, cursive letter M, the muster mark emblazens only the highest quality Smurf figurines. Muster mark Smurfs are the best painted version of a Smurf figurine that you can get! Muster is the German word for sample - in the case of Muster Smurfs, it refers to the highest quality of sample. Muster Smurfs are the "best of the best" quality of Smurf figuine. |

Hand painting Smurf figurines can be difficult. Paint must be applied exactly, in the right color, on specific areas of the Smurf - to exacting specifications. Muster Smurfs are considered perfectly painted, and they are used as examples for the other painters to emulate. The "M" label is a factory "control mark", placed on high-quality figures as chosen by the production manager. Muster Smurfs serve as a guide to help in the painting of Smurf figurines. The "M" marking is placed on the figurine in the same way a brand is placed on livestock - it is literally branded / melted into the figure. On some Muster Smurfs, if you look closely, the flecks of melted and burnt polyvinylchloride are visible (especially when the M is branded into a painted surface).
Fake Muster Smurfs exist! However, placing a Muster mark brand into a figurine takes precision and skill. The mark itself is quite nuanced and difficult to fake properly. Despite this, fake Muster smurfs will show up from time to time. To spot a fake Muster, the collector must look for two things: quality of muster mark, and depth of muster mark. The faked Muster marks are often branded too deeply into the PVC of a figurine, leaving a sloppy looking M with a puckered appearance. Look closely when buying a Muster, fakes are out there!
Muster figurines are rare, valuable, and highly collectable. Market conditions will determine the exact worth, but one thing is certain - Muster Smurfs are scarce and always in demand.
