Smurf Markings
Thanks so much for advice on finding out about prices. My dilemma is that it seems that different markings make a difference. Am I correct?
For example, I have a Cupid which is marked Bully, W. Germany, PEYO. I have seen a Cupid for $22 but it has different markings. So how do I know if mine is worth more, less or the same as theirs? And I have a Standard marked Schleich Hong Kong PEYO 1965. I haven't seen anything that old, does it make a difference?
Several of mine have paint rubs and other imperfections. Those I would probably just sell in lots on eBay and take my chances.
Thanks for the help. Frankly, I had forgotten how delightful these little blue fellows are. I'm having great fun rediscovering them.

Hi, there are quite a few markings and it can get quite confusing. Basically the marking firstly tells you where the smurf is made - normally marked West Germany for the smurfs sold in Europe and Hong Kong for the smurfs sold in USA. This means that it is harder to get some smurfs with particular markings therefore effecting the price. Also a few different companies licenced smurfs - Schleich, Wallace Berrie, Bully, Applause.
Any smurf made after 1992 (I think) also has a CE marking, often you will see the CE marking on a smurf first produced during the 70's and 80's, this shows that it was made in a later production (there has always been a number of smurfs produced every year).
The year in the marking represents when the smurf was first produced, not essentially when it was actually made.
All these factors do contribute to the price as many collectors (myself included) collect the different markings and some of them are much rarer than others.

Thank you. That is all very helpful. I noticed that there are many differently marked versions of the same figurines.
My question is, how does a person know which ones are rare and which ones are common? Are some markings indicative of the age of the smurfs? Does the age of particular figurine matter to collectors?

This is very difficult to determine unless you are handling a huge amount of smurfs (and then decided to publish your results). I managed to get so many variations by buying large lots of smurfs and I wouldn't really be able to say which ones were harder to find.
2.Are some markings indicative of the age of the smurfs?
Yes. CE represents smurfs made after 1992 regardless of the year marked. Bully and Wallace Berrie are older markings and not seen on newer figures.
3. Does the age of particular figurine matter to collectors?
I think most collectors would prefer original vintage figures but I guess many just collect a particular figurine regardless of the marking to start with and then think about variations later.
