We'll just have to be patient until next year or fall 2019 for the real trailer to come out.

So, it turns out that this animation studio DreamWall is looking for a production manager to work on the new Smurfs series.

Dreamwall (Zombillenium, the Red Turtle, Asterix and the Domain of the Gods) is an animation studio located in Charleroi, Belgium.

Another cool article I found:

The return of the Smurfs on the small screen takes shape
November 23, 2018

Nearly 40 years after their first television appearance, a new Belgian production company was formed to revive the Smurfs on the small screen. The project raises many interests. Expected release mid-2021.

We know little more about the next return of the Smurfs on small screens, forty years after their first appearance. Cited briefly in June at the launch of the large exhibition Schtroumpf Experience, which runs until the end of January 2019 (more than 150,000 spectators to date), the project has grown.

A new company, Peyo Productions , was formed a few days ago. It is owned by the Swiss company Lafig SA, partly in the hands of the heirs of Peyo, the creator of little blue and white fellows. Véronique Culliford, the daughter of Peyo, head of IMPS, the company that manages the rights to the work of the late draftsman, owns one of the 615 shares.

Peyo Productions was created to co-produce, with the French subsidiary of Editions Dupuis, owned by the Franco-Belgian group Media Participations, the future cartoons to be broadcast on television and on the Internet. "It is a partnership whose terms have not been strictly established, the precise amount of investment is not yet fully known, explains Brigitte Ickmans, COO of IMPS and right arm Veronique Culliford. This will in any case a multi-million production because we want to get the best quality possible. "

French-Belgian production

The project is, in fact, very ambitious, it is to produce a series of 52 episodes of 3D cartoons lasting 12 minutes the episode. A second season of 52 episodes is already envisaged. "We have finished the development and we have started the production, the animation will begin during the first half of next year", says Brigitte Ickmans. Two studios were chosen to carry out the project: Dreamwall , a well-known production company carolo, owned by the Dupuis Quartet, Wallimage Entreprises, RTBF, Sambrinvest, and Ellipse Animation , another entity of the Media Participations group.

Presented last October at Mipcom in Cannes as a draft, the new series is already generating interest. It has already been bought by RTBF (Ouftivi), VRT (Ketnet), TF1 and the German channel Kinder Kanal for broadcast in the second half of 2021. "It is also of interest to many American children's channels Nickelodeon (which belongs to the giant Viacom, Ed) and Cartoon Network (Warner Media, Ed), "says Brigitte Ickmans. The audience of these two channels is global.

The Turn of the 80s

This American interest is not surprising. The Smurfs are Universal Characters. The recent film adaptation of their Hollywood-style universe by the Sony-Columbia studio has been a hit. But their notoriety goes back to well before, more precisely at the beginning of the Eighties, when the American studio Hanna-Barbera adapted their adventures for television. It was the beginning of a real televised "Smurfmania" that allowed Peyo's little characters to conquer the whole world. 272 episodes of 30 minutes each were thus produced.

The project aims to perpetuate the aura of the series but with modern animation techniques . And then, this is the first time that Belgians (and French) will be at the helm for an audiovisual project around the Smurfs more than forty years after their first appearance in the cinema: it was in 1976 with the adaptation by the Belvision studio of the mythical album "The flute with six Smurfs".

Derivatives

If the 60th anniversary of the series puts the Smurfs in the light, they have never left the front of the stage. A good hundred television contracts are still in progress and it is estimated that more than a billion people have been in contact with the series.

Hanna-Barbera's cartoons have spawned huge merchandising and innumerable licenses for consumer brands. This business never went out. On the contrary, it bounces regularly with releases of movies, albums, video games and other events.

700 licenses are active today. IMPS, which achieved a turnover of 14.3 million euros in 2017 and a net profit of 1.4 million, estimates at one billion dollars the revenue generated each year by the sales of retail products via these licenses. The marketing machine should once again be excited during the distribution of these new cartoons.

Vic's right.

We've still got one more year left before the series will soar with flying colors on the internet and television.

But it's going to focus on just the main Smurfs from the first and second seasons of the 1980s cartoon show.

I wonder if Netflix acquires the worldwide rights to "The Smurfs: A New Touch of Blue", In case if they lost the rights to Winx Club and other Rainbow S.p.a. shows and movies, if Disney buys Rainbow S.p.a. and transfer all the shows to their own streaming services, Disney+.

Hopefully, this will be better than the original 1980s series (where it suffered from limited animation, errors and formulaic storylines by Hanna-Barbera itself).

The Hanna-Barbera series looked so bad it seemed like it came out in the 60s.

I also hope the anonymous Smurfs will be more present like in the comics instead of being in the background and we get stuck seeing the same 10 Smurfs all the time.

And don't forget, the Smurfs are a little more mischievous in the original comics (which gives them depth).

They also swore (not explicitly, mind you) physically fought each other quite often and occasionally drank.

Do you think they'll hit Brainy on the head with a mallet in this new series or just throw him outta the village a la Hanna-Barbera?

If an European producer is responsible for the production, I'm inclined to think the series shall be according to the Smurf original comics. [Happy Smurf]
