Chapter Thirty-seven: Two Sets of Twins and a Batch of Polyjuice... (part one)

Alister Moody decided that it was about time someone knew the truth about what happened between him and his twin brother... But who would he trust to such a secret?
The one who they called Papa Smurf seemed to be the best candidate for his confession... However, it also looked as if he held a few secrets under his cap, as well.

Chapter Thirty-seven: Two Sets of Twins and a Batch of Polyjuice... (part two)

Moody waited patiently for a chance to speak to Papa Smurf alone. That opportunity finally arrived when the younger Smurfs had gone with Patrick, Grace and Blue to the roof of the apartment building, leaving the two seniors in the home of the Winslows.
"Smurf," he said with a polite nod of his head.
"Please, Master Doyle," The small blue man said modestly. "Just call me Papa, everyone does..."
Moody had never felt so intimidated before... He had been in the presence of many great and powerful wizards prior to this.
Could it be, he wondered, that my own twin brother has met an even more prestigious and talented being than ever before seen? That this Smurf might be some sort of higher entity?
"Yes... Listen, about that --" he started to reply, but was cut off when Papa Smurf began to chuckle...
"I already know what you were going to say," Papa cut in. "I know you aren't Victor Doyle..."
"You knew?" Moody asked. "How long have you known that?"
Papa Smurf just kept smiling and answered, "Polyjuice potion isn't entirely accurate, you know," he said. "I can always tell when someone is using it."
Moody was astounded by the creature's intellect. "You knew the whole time and didn't say anything?"
"I was actually just testing you... Seeing if you could be trusted; my Smurfs and our friends deserve to be safe. But now that you know that I know the truth about you, do you mind telling me who you really are and where the real Master Doyle is?"
Moody could feel the potion wearing off. He knew that he had to put his glass eye and wooden leg back on, and fast. "Of course, I just need to get something really quickly before the potion wears off."
"No problem at all I'll just stay here and wait," the old Smurf said patiently.
It didn't take long for Alister Moody to hunt down the eye and leg and put them on. Once done, he hurried out to reveal his secret to the reliable blue beastie.
"My name is Alister Moody," he said as he approached Papa Smurf, "and Victor Doyle is my twin brother. We were separated at birth because I was a wizard, but he was a muscle."
Papa Smurf seemed a bit confused. "Muggle?" He asked. "You mean a nonmagical human?"
Moody nodded his head, then he agreed to explain his background to him. He described how he had been raised in the European wizarding world. How he became part of an elite group called the Order of the Phoenix, and how he had survived a killing curse despite being considered dead by the rest of his team.
Papa Smurf seemed intrigued by Moody's story.
"But now," Moody sighed, "Victor is extremely ill. He wanted me to come here in his stead. Neither one of us had a clue that you were going to be here. Or that there was going to be seer involved."
"Seer? You mean my little Ariel?" Papa Smurf asked.
Moody felt guilty for making such a comment. He was about to apologize, until he noticed that the elderly Smurf seemed to be prepared to tell his own tale...

Chapter Thirty-seven: Two Sets of Twins and a Batch of Polyjuice... (part three)

The old Smurf sighed and turned to face a wall in the opposite direction of Moody and began to speak. Not in his usual upbeat manner, but in a solemn and mysterious tone.
"It was a long time ago," he said. "I was in love with a girl who turned out to be the fairy queen... But it wasn't meant to be...." he shook his head before continuing, possibly in regret. "Queen Mersandra ended up with child... It turned out to be twins... The whole of the fairy kingdom was in an outcry; the babies were Smurfs... A girl and a boy; Ariel and Clumsy... They tried to send them both to me in the village, but once they had bundled Ariel and laid her in the stork's basket, the bird took off before the fairies could place Clumsy in with her..." at this point, Papa Smurf seemed a little more than regretful. "The bird was under an evil curse, but no-one ever found out who did it... The stork flew off with Ariel to a magical waterfall inside of a cave. It was a blue moon that night and a portal was opened in the falls. Mersandra came to warn me about the bird being missing, but when we got to the springs..." he froze for a moment to gather his composure. "But we were too late, the beast had already thrown Ariel through the portal; she was gone forever... "
Moody was astounded by it, "But you found her, now," he intervened.
"That's because I knew there was a chance we would find her," the Smurf replied. "Mersandra cast a spell on Clumsy before she disappeared; a spell that would keep either sibling alive as long as the other was... But, now that we've found her, the spell is broken... What if she disappears again? The spell Mersandra used is a fairy spell... Those can only be used once on a being, once broken, it'll never work on them again..."
Moody was amazed and confused. So many questions swarmed his head, now. If those other Smurfs weren't Papa Smurf's children, where did they come from? Did they even know that Papa wasn't their real father? How could only one Smurf raise so many youths who weren't even his own?
He was sure that there was no absolute answer. But he supposed that was the reason why the old Smurf reminded him so much of his late friend, Albus Dumbledore...

Chapter Thirty-eight: Moody's Big Reveal... (part one)

After a considerable amount of time out on the roof of the Winslows' apartment building, we came back down to discover that Victor was nowhere to be found, and Papa Smurf was waiting for us in the living room, standing upon the coffee table with a concerned look on his face.
Master Winslow was the first to react....
"Papa Smurf?" He began, "Where's Vic?"
The old Smurf sighed and turned towards the hallway. "You can come out, now, Alister..."
"Alister?" I heard Miss Grace and Master Winslow mutter to each other...
Suddenly, there was a sound, like wood rubbing metal, coming from the hallway...

Chapter Thirty-eight: Moody's Big Reveal... (part two)

The rubbing sound was combined with a shrill squeaky noise, and each time I heard that, it was followed by a loud thud, which continued until Victor reached the end of the hall, stopping before getting to the threshold where we would see him...
"You're sure about this, Smurf?" I heard him ask, his voice was a bit more grizzly than usual.
"Don't worry, Mr. Moody..." Papa Smurf replied. "I assure you, they will understand..."
"Moody?" Blue leaned over and whispered to me, "Ariel, do you think he means from the movie?"
I shook my head. "I don't know," I answered, "I thought you said that he was dead."
The ten year old boy watched anxiously as he agreed, "That's what I thought... Maybe I misread something in the book..."
"Or maybe," Victor Doyle said, stepping out into the drawing room, "You shouldn't believe everything you read."
Everyone in the room gasped and stared at the man who stood there in the doorway...

Chapter Thirty-eight: Moody's Big Reveal... (part three)

I knew that I wasn't alone in my feelings of shock and confusion when the old man revealed himself. Despite the fact that he sounded just like Victor Doyle, he only looked vaguely similar.
This "Moody," fellow was very different; scarred from head to toe, a wooden leg, and a darting glass eye that seemed to be trying to look in all directions at once...
I couldn't believe it. This was one of the men from my vision.
I was baffled by this. "Moody?" I raised an eyebrow, "as in Mad-eye Moody? From the Harry Potter series? But that's not possible..."
"And why not?" Moody asked, leaning gingerly on a wooden walking stick which he had in his hand.
"For a good couple of reasons," I explained as politely as I could manage. "First of all, sir, with all due respect to you... The books clearly state that, well, you're dead, a-and secondly, it's not possible because the tales of Harry Potter are, um..."
At that point, I was at a loss for words. I couldn't just bluntly tell him that Harry Potter was just a story... could I?
"The tales are just that?" Moody pushed on. "That's just what she wants you to think... I didn't really die... I grabbed Dung's arm as he Disapparated, causing him to take me for the ride."
I heard Master Winslow behind me: "That still doesn't make sense... Why did you come here disguised as my son's grandfather?"
Moody's laugh was just as raspy and gruff as when he spoke. "He's my brother. We were separated at birth... It wasn't until a few years ago that we were reunited," his face suddenly went very grim. "But he's very sick, now... I haven't been able to find a cure for it... Neither Muggle or magical."
Blue gasped. This was a lot for a ten year old boy to take in, "No. Not Grandpa Vic... He can't... He just can't be sick."
Moody could only nod in sad agreement, "He is. Which is why I think it's a good idea for you to go and see him, before... Well, you get the idea."
Grace stood up, "I'm sorry, Mister Moody, we can't just leave... Our friends, the Smurfs, need our help right now."
"And Victor needs his family," Moody replied. "I shall stay here with the Smurfs... You go be with Vic."

Chapter Thirty-eight: Moody's Big Reveal... (part four)

Patrick and Grace stood up alongside their son, Blue, and started looking to each other worriedly.
Suddenly, Grouchy Smurf stepped forward. "What about Gargamel?!?" he exclaimed.
"Yeah!" Hefty agreed "We all heard it! He's coming after Patrick!"
I had to speak up now, "He has plans to..." I almost choked on my words, but I knew it was the only thing that I could say, "Gargamel wants to... To kill Master Winslow... And I don't think he'd be against bringing harm to Miss Grace and Blue if it comes to it."
Moody's glass eye zipped from left to right and all over the place. "Lass, I don't think there's much of a problem with that," he said. That statement caught us all off guard.
Then he began to pull something out from in his coat. It was long and thin. For a brief moment, I thought it was just a simple stick. But then I heard everyone in the room gasp in shock...

Chapter Thirty-nine: The Spell (Part one)

Papa Smurf was taken aback by the suddenness of Moody's reaction. The wand didn't scare him half as much as the defensive stance Ariel and the other Smurfs had taken in response to it.
"Calm down, my little Smurfs," he said with a soft yet stern tone. "Moody is only trying to help our friends. There is nothing to fear."
"But, Papa Smurf," Gutsy whispered over his shoulder to him. "The wand... What normal human being uses a wand?"
Papa looked Gutsy in the eye as he replied, "Moody is a wizard, but he is nothing like Gargamel. He uses his magic to protect the innocent and to teach the wrongdoers of the world. Now calm down and get back over here so he can do whatever it is he is trying to do."
One by one, each of the Smurfs did as they were told, except for Ariel.

Chapter Thirty-nine: The Spell (Part two)

Papa Smurf looked at her more carefully and realized that she was not, in fact, scared. Nor was she even trying to fight against the grizzled sorcerer who was pointing a wand at the Winslow family. She seemed to be more interigued by the situation.
He had to admit that it was pretty interesting to see. Moody's wand seemed very different compared to the ones that Gargamel once had wielded. His wand was more advanced than the first one that the dastardly fiend had, yet again, it was also a simpler design than that of the Dragon Wand that the nasty wizard had stolen from a bookshop some ten or eleven years ago.
Moody raised his wand and quickly flicked his wrist in the direction of an object near the doorway. He then made another motion and the object --which turned out to be an umbrella-- came floating towards them.
"Everyone grab on," the wizard said gruffly, "this portkey won't last forever, you know."
"Portkey?" Master Winslow scoffed, "An umbrella? What's it going to do? Fly us Mary-Poppins-style to Vic's house?"
Moody did not seem to be amused by such a ridiculous comment. "Maybe you should ask your son, Blue, here. He seems to know about these sorts of things."
The young boy chuckled shyly. "I guess I kind of I know..."
"Yes, but if you read those silly books by that Rowling lady, you don't know all the details of portkey travel." Moody responded. "But, of course, the best way to explain it would be to show you, so grab on, all of you, let's go!"

Chapter Forty: Arrival (part one)

"Grab on!" Moody exclaimed, and we all held onto the seemingly ordinary umbrella.
There was a strange feeling, like something pulling at all of your limbs at once from just behind your navel. I felt dizzy as I saw the room spinning out and away from us and another place began to form as the other disappeared from view.
We were in a hospital room. However, it was different from what I imagined a hospital to look like. There was a bed off toward one of the walls. In the bed lay the real Victor Doyle, sleeping in a deathlike state.
"Grandpa," Blue gasped when we finally stopped spinning. He looked to his mother, tears welling up in his eyes. "What's wrong with him?"

Chapter Forty: Arrival (part two)

"I... I don't know, Blue," I could hear Master Winslow mutter to his son. Then his tone of voice changed as he spoke to Moody: "Do you know anything about his condition? Is there anything that could be done to save him?"
I looked back at the group, but just briefly. Long enough to see the grizzly old man shake his head solemnly. I looked to the hospital bed and suddenly saw that Master Doyle was stirring around.
"He's waking up!" I quietly exclaimed. "Look!"
Vic groaned in pain as he tried to sit up in the bed, but ended up just having to roll over a bit. Needles and tubes were attached to him in many places. The gown he wore only covered his front and halfway down his arms. He seemed very thin and malnourished. Even the bags under his eyes took up most of his face, and his hair seemed to be falling out.
I couldn't stop myself from gasping in terror, along with all the other Smurfs except Papa, at the sight of the poor man who lay helpless in the bed.
"Hello, brother," I heard Moody say. I looked up to see him walking over to the side of the bed, grabbing his twin brother's hand. "Have the doctors said anything new about your condition yet?"
I heard him reply, but I couldn't make out the words that Master Doyle was trying to say. But as he spoke, I could just barely see him shaking his head.

Chapter Forty-one: Goodbye, Vic...

"Hello, brother," Moody said, "did the doctors give you any more news on what's going on with you?"
With great effort, Victor Doyle shook his head as he spoke, "They said I don't have long... I could possibly die today and there's nothing that they can do to save me."
"Don't talk like that," Moody replied, "I'm sure you'll get through this."
"I'm afraid not..." Doyle said, coughing and wheezing harshly. "I've been on life support for months now and it's not gotten any better... On the contrary, it's been worsening more each day... I heard the nurses talking about pulling the plug on me... They said that I was beyond saving."
"No... They can't do that..." Moody interrupted.
"Can't do what?" said a voice behind him.
It was Blue. Moody had almost forgotten that he had brought the Winslows, and the Smurfs, with him this time.
He looked to his brother, who was straining to lift his arm and beckon the young boy and his parents to the bedside.
When everyone was around him, he spoke, "You all know that I love you... You smurfs are some really good friends, and I hope you will keep in touch with Patrick and Grace... Blue, I'm sure going to miss you... I could always count on you to brighten my day when I was feeling down..."
"Grandpa Vic?" Blue whimpered, his eyes welling up with tears. "What's wrong? Are you leaving us?"
Patrick laid a hand on his son's shoulder. "I'm afraid it's not that simple, bud," he explained. "But, yeah, he's going to be gone for a long time."
"Don't think I forgot about you Patty-boy," Victor said with a weak chuckle. "I want you to take over the factory for me."
"The Corndog Kingdom?" Patrick asked with a confused tone of voice. "Shouldn't that position be given to someone who actually works there."
"Well, you're the Corndog King, now... You do what seems fit."
With that, Victor's eyelids grew heavy. He began to chuckle and smile. He must have been seeing something nobody else could.
"Sweet angel, come to take me home..." he sighed.
His body went limp. Victor Doyle was dead.
The flatline sounded, and Patrick sighed sadly, standing by Moody, holding Blue's hand, with Grace sobbing quietly onto his shoulder and hearing the Smurfs humming a sad song in the background. "Goodbye, Vic..." he said solemnly.

all right smurfs, I won't be prolonging this visit with the Winslows too much more... just a couple more chapters with them. (well, a couple of semi-peaceful chapters) and then I can get on with the REAL action... aka the first time Gargamel is actually relevant (kind of)...

Chapter Forty-two: A (Very) Private Funeral (part one)

It was a few days before the Winslows were a little less depressed about the recent events. I knew that I was probably not going to understand the purpose of what happened later that week...
We Smurfs had to hide inside a burlap grocery sack as Master Winslow, Moody, Blue and Miss Grace took seats in a yellow, horseless carriage.
We then arrived at a church house, inside which, was an altar. In the front of the altar, was a gigantic wooden box atop a table which also happened to be made from wood, as well. Only one half of the box's lid was opened, and inside it lay the lifeless body of Victor Doyle.
I felt my heart lurch as poked my head out of the bag to get a look at what was going on.
Unnerving as it seemed to me, it was nothing compared to the memory of the vision I had had those few days ago.
I felt a hand on my shoulder. I turned around and saw Gutsy, he shared with me the same facial expression in that moment. "Lass," he said, wiping away a few tears, "I know you never got to know him well enough. Neither have I. I know how you feel.. You think you should be devasmurfed by what's happened to him. But at the same time, but you don't."
"Maybe," I sighed, still thinking about the vision. Part of it is a little bit more clear, I thought, [but what does it all mean?[/i]

Chapter Forty-two: A (Very) Private Funeral (part two)

We all sat in that bag, listening to the words that were being spoken about Victor Doyle. I looked around and saw that Papa Smurf, as well as the other six Smurfs, had their heads bowed, eyes closed, all holding hands.
I climbed up the side of the bag to get a better look at the place where we were. All the pews were empty, save for the one we were in with the Winslows and Moody... I wondered if this was what all funerals looked like. Doyle's family was very small, from what I noticed.
I was spooked by the suddenness of Papa's voice once he spoke. "Ariel," he said, "please, just come down from up there. I don't think it is going to be very long before it's time to go. We still have to figure out what that vision you had means..."
Obediently, I came back down and had a seat at the bottom of the bag. Still listening to the words of the pastor that stood far away at the front of the church.
Papa Smurf was right. Before I knew it, the funeral was over. It was a very private funeral indeed.

Chapter Forty-three : To Find a Foe (part one)

After days of searching for the home of Patrick Winslow, Gargamel and his cat, Azreal were just about ready to give up.
"Let's face it, Azreal," the tired old wizard complained as he sat down on a bench. "We'll never find that horrid Patrick Winslow. We've looked everywhere and still have not come up with the slightest trace of him!"
The tabby cat rolled his eyes as he began to clean himself with his tongue.
Suddenly, there was a rustling noise coming from behind the bushes at the other side of the road. The villain and his pet jumped in the air from fear.
Gargamel gave out a little squeal. "Who's there?!?" he stammered. "Show yourself, or face the wrath of the great and powerful Gargamel!"
"Hah!" said a slightly high pitched male voice as a rather short and stout silhouette emerged from the brush. "Why, you're the biggest sissy I ever did see! Aside from myself. But at least I was given the opportunity to work with the one and only Dark Lord himself. It cost me an arm to get on his good side, of course. But you? Call yourself a wizard... Where's your wand, huh?"

Chapter Forty-three : To Find a Foe (part two)

Gargamel was highly offended by the stranger's comment. "I'll have you know, imbecile, that whomever your 'Dark Lord' is, I happen to be just as great -- no, better -- than he was!"
The dark figure revealed himself. He was a fat little man with features similar to that of a rat. One of his arms seemed to be made from a strange type of metal that was very lifelike in the way it was fully formed and functional. The little man breathed heavily, now, fuming with anger and frustration.
"It is you who are the fool, you blathering buffoon!" the tiny man shouted. "No wizard in his right mind would insult the likes of Voldemort! Even in his death, he is a great wizard of the Dark Arts!"
Gargamel gave the fellow a short glance, then both he and his cat Azreal rolled with laughter.
"Great wizard!" Gargamel guffawed. "Why, if he's so great, then explain how he is dead!"
"Well, uh," the man was caught aback. "There was this boy... By the name of Harry Potter... He -- he killed Voldemort."
Gargamel's laughter intensified. "A boy? What was his name again? Potter? Hah!!! What was he? The village plate maker?"
The man was about ready to lose his temper. "WOULD YOU STOP MOCKING THE DARK LORD WITH YOUR FOOLISHNESS?!?" he finally shouted. He turned, ready to leave.
Gargamel and his cat finally calmed down a bit. Catching his breath, Gargamel said to the man: "You are a very funny little man, sir. Tell me, what is your name?"
The man sighed and turned back towards him. "My name is Peter Pettigrew. I came over here because I heard you were planning something. Maybe I can be of some assistance to you."
