At first, thanks a million smurfs for showing and sharing these true Smurf relics, my friend!! [Big Grin]
One can see how different their la-la song was, and I enjoyed the jazzy musical background from some scenes. Cool, smurf, cool! [Wink]
So far the only one I had found a certain time ago was this excerpt from the first animated Smurf cartoon. Released in 1959. [Happy Smurf]

Anytime, Squeaky!!! [Smile] and they wern't mine, I got them from a user called "wwwbarrufetcat" and I'm not sure if Wikipedia's Right or not, but according to it there are German Copies of the cartoons and then there are French Copies with Dutch Subtitles... It is indeed a rarity to go beyond HB.. eh?

Yep, that clip was found on YouTube then.
And at that time HB didn't event imagine that they would release the Smurfs cartoon one day... otherwise, 22 years later. [Wink]

Someone should buy those German & French/Dutch copies, or release them online, then we can enjoy the oldies... LOL and btw did you see how that smurf got captured by Gargy? he ran side to side, then stopped running and let the wizard pick him up...

I know what you mean. One can observe this animation technique was somewhat primary, eg the way Azrael and Gargamel move their legs on walking through the forest and when Brainy comes out the bushes to observe them coming to take the imprisoned Smurf.

@ Squeaky: That black-and-white 1959 cartoon looks like it could have been animated by Bill Melendez, who directed most of the "Peanuts" television specials. The animation may be very simple, but character designs and backgrounds are very stylized.

@thatonesmurfx1039: I just saw the 1965 cartoon "The False Smurf" and loved it, including the use of jazz music throughout the soundtrack and the Smurfs waving goodbye at the end. I could follow the plotline without understanding the languages or subtitles.

The only difference, besides Smurfette's absence (she'd be created in the comics the following year), is the very simple animation, but even that was used very creatively. Also, the familiar Smurf bounce was never used in the Hanna-Barbera series. They just walked like everyone else.

Yes, and not forgetting that Bill Melendez had worked for UPA (Mr. Magoo, Gerald McBoing Boing) after Disney and WB, so that he incorpored the revolutionary cartoon style that came up then (and Gene Deitch got a similar one too). All of this before 'Peanuts'... [Wink]
I read the info and I found strange 'The Fake Smurf' (by the way, their very first la-la song on 2:53 !) was not mentioned, and that 'Smurfnapped' was not said to be from 1959, though the person who uploaded it on YouTube has confirmed it. Then... who is right and who is wrong?? [Confused] [Confused] [Confused]

@Squeaky & @Richrod...

I also found a more-detailed Wiki page on these old cartoon shorts:

(you'd have to copy in the code and paste it, because it won't work reguarly in the post, so I had to put it in code
code:
 http://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Les_Aventures_des_Schtroumpfs_(film_d%27animation,_1965)

It's in French, but it has more information on it than the English page. maybe some more info will pop up?

Thank you so much for sharing the link. [Happy Smurf] Strange, Le Faux Schtroumpf - The Fake Smurf - is not mentioned either, since it's dated from 1965 as well as the others.

It's pretty strange and it kinda blows that not much information is given about this series. and only three clips of it have been leaked.

You're welcome, Squeaky [Big Grin]

I don't think that The Fake Smurf was a part of the feature film of 1965. I think it was it's own production. and I think TVA may have created some more shorts, or a series, as shown here:

I finally found out the source of the three videos pertaining to these cartoons. The Belgian Comic Strip Center has these cartoons and play them on a little TV in the Smurfs section of the Museum.

Yup.

These 3 tour videos show a bit of the screens that the cartoons are being shown on.

YouTube links:

Now, we've gotta convince whoever owns the rights to these cartoons to release them in some form.

I had no idea there were smurf cartoons from the '60s. I love the old cartoons, like Mr. Magoo!

I'm afraid not, Century. By the way, here's the scene of the 1959 Smurf cartoon I had found a certain time ago besides the video:

 -

Other one from the same cartoon I'd just found:

Not really. The cartoons were only in French with Dutch subtitles. They also had a German dub which aired on TV in Germany for some time as well.

I wish IMPs did a DVD or Blu-Ray release of it some day, but if you're in Belgium and you go to the Belgian Comic Strip Center, you can see those cartoons.

Here's all the videos I found so far of the cartoon:
