Thanks for the translation, Vic.
I suppose Peyo realized to do this strip after HB Smurf episode, since this one is from the first season and that one was launched years later. Please correct me if I'm wrong. [Confused]

Yeah, I think this was created around the same time as the comic book version of "The Smurflings", which is its companion story in the same book. I wanted to do this translation before Papercutz got a hold of it, knowing that they might end up translating the title character's name as The Robot Smurf, which is what Le Schtroumpf Robot translates as, but that would lose the spirit of the character's original name in English. Then again, I'm not sure if Papercutz would do a translation of this story in English, given the drinking scene with Gargamel and Azrael that appears in this story.

Just for fun, Gargamel's villain song from the cartoon show got used for the drinking scene in this adaptation.

By the way, this is one of the comics that I own in German which I purchased from the Smurf Collectors Club International along with "Soup A La Smurf" (which I'm having trouble translating) and "The Jewel Smurfer". One thing I didn't like about purchasing foreign comics from them was how unhelpful the operator of that club was in even presenting titles, which made purchasing the comics more of a grab-bag affair. Then again, we didn't have the benefit of Google Translate like we do nowadays.

Yep, in '88. Very hilarious touch of ol' mean Gargy singing his famous song while boozing. [Big Grin] [Big Grin] [Big Grin] [Big Grin] [Big Grin] [Big Grin] [Big Grin] [Big Grin] [Big Grin] [Big Grin] [Big Grin] [Big Grin]

BREAKING NEWS!!! I've just got my copy of "Smurf Soup" from Papercutz, and guess what? It has the English translation of "The Clockwork Smurf" in it!

This comic story is really not that original, as it is based on a multi-part ad that appeared in Belgian newspapers in 1979 and the Robot Smurf was represented by the mascot for Benco (a European brand that is similar to Nestle's Quix).

That's curious: the Smurf in the third panel from page 12 reminds me Hackus from the new Smurfs movie. I wonder if that Smurf inspired the producers to him? [Confused]

Hmm interesting... I knew about the Nestle Quick dispensing thing on the comic clockwork... which is a diff design from the Hanna Barbara version... the whole story is different. I guess their reason was to have an actual "episode" and give the character a bit more depth.

Thoughts?
