I recently purchased both some recent and vintage Smurfs and would like to display them, probably on a knick-knack shelf hanging on the wall. But I know that a lot of the Smurfs are made from white plastic instead of having parts painted white, and I'm concerned about those parts yellowing.
I know from previous experience in toy-collecting that the sun and even electric light in your home can cause plastic to yellow, especially noticeable with white plastic. I wouldn't have the shelf directly in front of an open window, but there would be some sunlight.
How do most of you deal with this in your collections? Do you lock your Smurfs away so this isn't an issue? Do Smurfs tend to yellow badly? I know that, in trying to find a Spy Smurf, almost every one had a yellow hat!

Hi, DetectiveFork! I usually clean the ones I have with cotton wet in neutral soap and water. Both the oldest and the ones I acquired recently (these are still in some plastic packs) kept at wooden houses hanging from the wall, near to my computer and not very far from my window; but in a safe position, so that sunlight won't reach them. My first Smurfs haven't such a "pure" white color (but not so yellow by the other hand), probably it's really due to electric light as you said. It was good hearing of this. Until nowadays, whenever I have to handle them, I've always washed my hands well before doing it. By the way, I once watched in another site that skin natural sweat and oil can make the PVC get yellow. There's even a kind of detergent(?), specially for cleaning PVC!! Take a look here .

My mom just found a bunch of my old smurfs from when I was a kid. Any suggestions on a good way to clean them?

Hello, Nankeldisney! All you need to know about Smurf figurines you'll find here. Good luck! Hi, Kristy, welcome you too! Not very long I posted a reply in this topic which is just about that, and also the problem of yellowing.

Soap, water, q-tips.. Or warm water and a soft wash cloth. Sometimes they get real brittle if they're super old so be careful!!
