If it's like the Chipmunks movie, then I guess Gargamel will be a real person! Which actor should play him? Any ideas?

And what about his clothes... if it's a real actor - is he going to wear Gargamel's traditional black robe type thing?

[Confused]

And Gargamel's got to have teeth missing, too, since he's mostly seen with a single tooth dangling in his mouth.

Hmmm. That's a great question. I reckon Tom Hanks would make out pretty good as Gargamel if the movie is gonna be live action. As for the costume, I imagine it'll probably look more or less like in the cartoon. Maybe something more in the style of the robes used in Harry Potter.

Tom Hanks does remind me a bit of Gargamel these days..

and..CG Cat or live cat? I'm guessing they'll go for a CG Azrael.

Hi Smurfs,

I have updated the Smurf movie page with new information. I have also included a copy of the Paramount / Nickelodeon website in case it is taken down.

Now that Sony animation is involved, the Paramount teaser dates may no longer be valid.

Oh dear. Bringing classic 2D cartoons into the third dimension on the big screen. This was the reason I stayed away from the Alvin & The Chipmunks movie. Somethings were just not meant to be seen in live action mixed with CGI, in my humble opinion.

I might see this if they can cast as many of the original VAs as possible.

I'd be surprised if they somehow come up with technology that would, in a manner of speaking, digitally "resurrect" vocal talent that has passed on, like that of Don Messick (who voiced Papa Smurf in the cartoon show) or Hamilton Camp (who voiced Greedy and Harmony). Of course, it could end up turning the whole movie into a "sacrifical lamb" for that kind of technology, since being the first to have it won't necessarily make it the best the first time out.

But problems with bringing other 2D cartoon properties into CG 3D aside, I'd still say: bring it on!

My, I liked to know that Lucille Bliss is ready to voice sweet Smurfette again! And that Sally "The Flying Nun" Field also will take part! I wonder if Brainy, Clumsy, Grouchy and Jokey shall have the same voices from HB cartoon show too? June Foray's Jokey was super!   I also like Frank Welker's work, he's very good. Shall he voice Hefty and Poet again?   I'm really curious to watch the final result. Is is true that "real people" will interact with the Smurfs?   I  don't worry very much what they shall be like in 3-D effect (providing they become as alike the originals as the artists can), but I only hope the people in charge will keep the comics and cartoon spirit. I'm a bit afraid they'll put on something which has nothing to do with it...   [Confused]

I remembered now... How about Debbie Reynolds
voicing Nanny Smurfette and Ricardo Montalbán voicing Grandpa (or Papa) Smurf? He had been making voice for some cartoons (Kim Possible episodes and Ant Bully, for example). Well, pals,
that's just an idea that occurred... [Wink]

Ricardo Montalban as Grandpa Smurf? That's a rather weird fit. I'd rather have Wilford Brimley if he's still on this side of living.

As for Nanny Smurf, I'd vote for K Callan, the actress who did Ma Kent from the "Lois And Clark" TV show.

On the other hand, I can't imagine him voicing Gargamel... I know who's the actress that played Martha Kent, you remembered well, her voice would fit well for Nanny, but...Sorry,
Vic, but who's Wilford Brimley? [Confused]

He starred in the late 1980s TV series Our House as the character Gus Witherspoon, around the same time Grandpa Smurf made his cartoon show debut. He also starred in both Cocoon movies.

I'm probably in a minority on this one, but I think the smurfs movie is going to be smurftastic in 3D. it also gives a fun contrast to the live actors.
What really worries me is Nickelodeon's mind-numbing humor mixing with the pure, innocent world of the smurfs.

Not a very important detail, but I really hope Azreal's gonna be a real cat rather then a CGI one. something about CGI cats and dogs doesn't appeal to me for some reason...I didn't like Garfield's 3d look either.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think creating a CGI version of Azreal is harder and more expensive then training a real cat to do Azi's part anyway.

And it's a long shot, but for some reason I hope Prince Theo's in this or one of the 2 others (if it really is going to be a trilogy).

I'm also worried over them putting some kind of different humor in Smurfs movie, Divine Sheep. I hope this won't happen! Do you know whether Gargamel shall be played by a real actor? If so, then a real cat would fit for Azrael. [Azrael]
(Only another question: what's CGI?) [Roll Eyes]

CGI is a computer graphic term short for "Computer Generated Imagery." Almost every cartoon is animated with CGI nowadays. It's enough for the nostalgia fan in me to long for the traditional hand-drawn cel animation that we grew up with.

I also fear a possible change of humor in this movie. Knowing Nickelodeon, they will probably shove a bunch of bathroom humor down our throats trying to appeal to today's generation of kids. And I don't want to see that happen to the Smurfs.

As for Gargamel, I'm kind of hoping he's going to be live action. If he's CGI, whoever they cast for his voice better be able to do a really good job at recreating Winchell's Gargamel.

From what I heard at present from the message boards, the movie is now off, so it's now entering "development hell".

I don't mind CGI animation although I think animators should also stick with the traditional 2D as well from time to time. But just the very thought of the use of toilet humor is just gonna ruin the Smurfs and would only make the movie an unpleasant experience. I fail to comprehend why the people of Nickelodeon even feel the need to entertain people by writing in such tasteless jokes. I believe they just do it because they think they'll attract more attention by doing that. We'll just have to wait and see what they will do. Not everything Nickelodeon comes out with is bad in my book, but most of what they create is disgusting.

Nowadays, Hollywood is too lazy to train real animals. They'd rather take advantage of modern computer technology, and animate animals, even if it's more expensive. It probably depends on the animal's role. A real cat would be neat, but it would also be interesting to see a 3D rendered version of Azrael's official design following a live-action Gargamel.

Kojinka, it's interesting that you brought that up. However, if the movie turns out to be all animation, I highly doubt that they would cast somebody who can actually mimic Paul Winchell's Gargamel voice considering that 99% of the cartoon movies we see today consist of famous actors as the voices. I don't fully mind it, but not all the time! It's very rare that you can see any animated movie that needs no celebrity voices, which can get very boring after a while considering that because of the lack of experience in voice overs movie stars have, they just use their own natural voices that it becomes so easy to see the "voice actors" and difficult to see the characters and their voice overs sound so bland it doesn't even sound like they're working in a cartoon. I strongly hope that they will hire professional voice actors for the film, but I've got the feeling that there's a 1% chance they'll do so.

Then again, if somebody could do a Gargamel voice that's just as comically sinister as Paul Winchell's version without it trying to be an exact duplicate, then more power to that voice actor who can pull it off!

I say Jim Cummings can probably do it fairly close. He took over for Paul Winchell doing Tigger. So why not?
