The thing with CGI animation is everybody wants to be as successful as Pixar is. It's oversaturated the market.

I agree. I'd much prefer if all these movies used 2D, but oh well.

There's also the technique of cel-shading, which was used in the Gamecube videogame The Legend Of Zelda: The Wind Waker, which makes 3D animation look like 2D. But 3D Smurfs is what I'm hoping to see someday -- and HAVE BEEN hoping to see since my EMPATH: The Luckiest Smurf fanfiction novel got started back in the 1980s -- and I hope not to be disappointed.

It's computer animation or effects.

CGI is 3D animation. I'm taking computer animation (aka, CGI). Just before xmas I was in a group project in my class and this is what we produced: http://ca.youtube.com/watch?v=5n5cQG-5HiI

Also there is more works I did in class on my blog page: http://theravenchild.blogspot.com/

I've been posting some of this stuff on my website too in a 'portfolio' section.

Take care.

I just saw Toy Story 2 the other day and it looked great, the best kind of CGI 3d animation. Looked like a cartoon that just happed to be in 3D, you really didn't get hit over the head with it, even though there was lots of 3d stuff. It's hard to explain, but it had a balance. I hope the Smurf movie is like that!

Are you serious? It takes on average 4 years for Pixar to make a film, (Google it) which is a little more than six months...

As a matter of fact. There is a link that was posted on another board that has a test rendering of a smurf in it at the very end.

The link is below.

Hey, not bad. That was a pretty cool looking little test render. I guess with the family watching over the project so closely they should have an incentive to keep things as much the same as possible. I hope. Cool looking little animation they showed, though.

The only thing we have to worry about is how the story/Trilogy will play out and if the voice actors are up to the task.

I hope they try to get some of the original cast involved.

My understading was that the Smurfs would CGI while the human characters would be live actors. Was I mistaken?

Speaking of human characters, do you think Johan and Pitwit will be in it?

I honestly don't know if it's going to be all CGI or a mix of CGI and live-action. I would like it to be the latter, but only if the CGI Smurfs weren't made to be so plasticky -- but then making them look too "realistic" isn't what I would want, either.

One website I visited stated that it will be live action/CGI, but based on most sources, it will probably be just CGI.

But I wonder about the hair, since there are at least a few Smurf characters that exhibit it -- whether it would be very textured to the point where you can see every strand of Smurfette's flowing blond tresses or Papa Smurf's bushy beard and moustache, or it would be more along the lines of something like Jimmy Neutron and his entourage of related characters. Or perhaps maybe a mix of the two.

So far it looks okay to me. I just hope it doesn't come out looking too plastic. Other than that, I can't wait.

There are three options in creating hair in 3D. there is a term called "helmet" hair. that is extruded out from the head. Second is poly hair. Many poly's that give it an interesting look. (think of those Anime video games styles). third way of doing the hair would be the syle of hair like in "Incredibles". that syle is done right in the program that the studios are using.

I'm still wondering what program they are using for this movie. The programs I've learned in this course are Maya, XSI, and 3D Max. I'm more familiar with Maya and XSI though.

Back to Smurfette's hair. My guess that they would most likely use the first choice in order to get her full body of hair. the animators can use a system called 'blendshapes' to give motion when she moves her head.

All-in-all, great start in appearance to the upcoming movie [Big Grin]

With the movies coming out, We should all band together and get our Smurfberry crunch cereal back on store shelves. There has to be a way to get a petition or something to POST. Maybe if they see a list of thousands of people asking for it they will make it again. Papa Smurf, how would we do it?

I just heard rumor that the film is going to be postponed until next year, of coarse I don't know that for sure. I've read some online articles saying that.

As for the CGI shot of the Smurfs so far for the movie, I think it looks pretty well done so far. However, I'd have to see the final project in order for me to have a complete opinion.

The Smurfs don't look too bad in CGI, but are they going to do that with Azrael, too?

I hope that they have Gargamel in the film, but will he be in CGI or as a real person?

Variety reports that the Smurf movie will be released by Columbia Pictures and Sony Pictures Animation - and it's LIVE ACTION!! Like The Chipmunks movie..

The writers will be David Stem and David Weiss, the guys who wrote Shrek 2 and 3. Jordan Kerner's Kerner Entertainment is still producing. Ben Haber and Paul Neesan will executive produce the film. Haber will also oversee script development for Kerner Ent.

Kerner said the live-action Chipmunks type idea began over the Christmas holidays with Sony Pictures Entertainment Chairman - CEO Michael Lynton, who grew up loving 'Les Schtroumpfs' in the Netherlands. Lynton loved the idea of a CGI/live action mix. Kerner also said that Columbia Pictures Chairman Amy Pascal believes for sure that there are a series of Smurf films to come!

Kerner has been working closely on the project with Lafig Belgium (who sold him the rights to the movie which Sony picked up) CEO Hendrik Coysman and Veronique Culliford, the daughter of Peyo.

SO the Smurfs will be Chipmunks style!!!

[Eek!]
